Subject: Playing For Keeps - Chapter 4

Urgent business called Dan Scott away from his son and tracking down Lucas
Roe on campus. A group of businessmen back in Tree Hill decided he'd be the
perfect candidate for mayor and wanted to discuss it with him. Dan
scribbled a hasty note to Nathan letting him know he'd return for the first
game of the season. He left Dean Durham a message asking him to advise him
when the matter they discussed was handled.

Nathan was thankful his father had left. Every night at dinner it was the
same lecture over and over again. `Focus, concentrate, be the best,' was
all the man drilled into him since the day his hands were large enough to
hold a basketball. Nathan knew his dad's dreams of becoming a star player
were shattered with his mom's pregnancy and that in many ways; his dad
resented him for it. For a long time, Nathan thought he owed the man and he
could repay by becoming the basketball legend his father never was.

By his last year of high school he'd fallen in love with a boy named
Jake. He knew there was no turning back. Jake wasn't a phase he was going
through. His parents didn't know about the boy other than they were
friends. When Jake died, it hurt so bad that Nathan didn't think he could
go on himself. No one understood the change in him. His father tried
yelling it out and at one point almost became physically violent but didn't
cross the line.

Nathan saw college as a fresh start and now with Lucas in his life, things
were finally looking up. Lucas was back with him at the dorm. Haley ended
up bringing him home from the hotel with Karen. Nathan couldn't be there
because of an important team meeting before the start of classes. By the
time he got back, Haley had cleared out and Lucas was sleeping
peacefully. Nathan pulled the desk chair to the foot of the bed and sat
watching the teen sleep.

Sitting quietly in the semi-darkened room gave Nathan time to think. He
decided joining a fraternity was out. He knew his dad would be pissed, but
this was his life. He also decided that while he'd continue to play
basketball, he would try to add a few music courses to his already tight
schedule. Writing songs is what he really wanted to do and though he'd only
known Lucas for a short time, he felt inspired. He was so lost in thought
that he hadn't noticed the blue eyes watching him.

"Thinking about me?" Lucas asked, his voice still thick with sleep.

"Always," Nathan said, leaving his chair to sit by Lucas' side.

He caressed the blonde's cheek and leaned down for a quick kiss. Lucas had
other plans and held his roommate in place, running his tongue over
Nathan's lips until they parted. Nathan gave into the kiss pressing down
and trying his best to devour his lover's lips.

"You're supposed to be resting," Nathan said, finally pulling away.

"I've been resting for a week. I missed you."

"I missed you too, but..."

"Nathan, I'm fine," Lucas interrupted, sensing his lover's
apprehension. "I'm taking my meds and I'm under a cardiologist's care here
now, so I'll be alright."

Nathan felt the blonde's hand sliding slowly down his torso. "The semester
starts on Monday and I want you to be ready," he tried to argue.

"I'm ready now," Lucas moaned.

Nathan thought if he were a stronger man, he'd resist and let Lucas
continue to recuperate but he wasn't so he gave in to Lucas' touches
reciprocating with a few of his own. They both freed each other and
stroked, kisses becoming more urgent. A thumb across the sensitive flesh
had Nathan needing more. He pulled the smaller man's head into his lap and
was rewarded with just that. Thumb was replaced by tongue and Nathan knew
he wanted to taste his lover too. He rolled on his side pulling Lucas into
the same position. It was slightly awkward the way he had to arch his back
to obtain his prize but soon both men were satisfying each other, sucking
and licking and teasing with tongues and teeth.

Each savored the taste of each other and Lucas thought if it were possible,
he'd stay like this forever; face nestled between strong thighs, nose being
tickled by the coarse pubic hair. It took some time before both teens were
matching each others rhythm, drawing back and sliding back down each
other's hardened flesh. Slurping, sucking and small grunts filled the room.

Nathan inserted two fingers in his mouth, never releasing Lucas. When Lucas
realized what his lover was about to do, he followed suit, sucking his own
fingers along with the jock's sex. He shifted slightly, rolling closer,
impaling himself down his lover's throat and was rewarded with two wet
fingers inside him. He returned the favor matching stroke for stroke until
the slow easy rhythm became more and more erratic.

Nathan succumbed first and Lucas feeling the muffled groans against his
crotch soon after. They lay like that for a long while, lightly stroking
and touching until a call from Haley to find out their dinner plans
interrupted the bliss of being together. Both Haley and Nathan ganged up on
Lucas and insisted he stay in and let them bring something too him. Knowing
he couldn't win, he opted for a shower and cleaning up his bed while he
waited for his food to arrive.

Shortly after he'd cleaned up and propped up his pillows waiting for
Nathan, Haley and his dinner to arrive there was a light knock on the
door. At first Nathan didn't remember the name of the brunette standing
their.

"Is Haley here?" she said, moving past him into the room.

"Uh...no she's not."

"You probably don't remember me. I'm Brooke. We went to the party
together. I was at the hospital when you got sick."

"Your Haley's roommate," Lucas nodded.

"Not for long. I'm pledging Zeta Phi Beta so I should be moving into the
sorority house in a few weeks."

"Well Haley and Nate went to get food for us."

"They make a cute couple." When she saw Lucas frown she added, "I hope you
two weren't an item."

Lucas restrained himself from telling her that yes he and Nathan are an
item. "Haley and I are old friends from our home town, Tree Hill."

Brooke seemed to perk up at that bit of news. "So are you pledging any
fraternities?"

Lucas was suddenly feeling like a mouse caught in a trap. "That's really
not my scene," he answered, praying Nate and Haley would return soon.

"That's too bad. I think you'd make a great candidate."

Brooke wandered around the room picking up items and turning them over and
putting them down as she spoke. Lucas was beginning to feel awkward being
alone in the room with her.

"You're welcome to stay and eat with us," Lucas offered.

"That's okay, I'm watching my weight. Tell Haley if she wants to pledge she
has to turn in her application by tomorrow night." The pretty brunette gave
Lucas the once over before exiting, nearly knocking the soft drinks out of
Nathan's hand as she did.

"Hey Brooke, wanna stay for dinner?"

"No thanks," she called over her shoulder.

"What did she want?" Nathan asked, setting the drinks down on Lucas' desk.

"She was looking for Haley. Something about the deadline to pledge for a
sorority. Where is Haley?"

"She stopped by her room to ask Brooke if she wanted to join us. She
wouldn't give me the food though. Didn't trust us not to eat everything
before she got here," Nathan laughed.

I guess you're pledging too." Lucas tried to hide his disappointment.

"Actually, I'm not." Nathan pulled Lucas into his arms, "I've found better
ways to spend my free time."
