Chapter 1

Jaymes

It worked. I thought, as I walked out of the store with the bag of
clothes in my hand. I can't believe I just did that. I wasn't sure if I was
being paranoid but were people starting to stare at me? I pulled my hood up
and walked a little faster, heading for my car parked down the road. I
avoided eye contact with anybody, I just had one destination, get to my car
and drive away.

"Sir" I heard a female voice about a meter or so behind me. Shit,
they've caught me. This was it, I'd be forced to give the clothes back to
the store, apologise and probably be banned from this part of town for the
rest of my life. What if I get arrested for stealing? I'd have a criminal
record and then nobody would want to have anything to do with me, I'd have
to move away, maybe change my name, lay low for years until it was safe to
come out of hiding. This thought process went through my mind in a split
second and I stood there, frozen. A few seconds went by and I realised I
hadn't moved at all. I should be running, isn't this how they do it on
those crime watch programs? The offenders usually run or put up some sort
of fight but no, I just stood there like a coward.

"Umm, Excuse me, Sir?". The woman said. Excuse me, Sir? I was
confused, shouldn't she be saying something along the lines of 'You have
the right to remain silent, but anything you do say blah blah blah'. I
slowly turned around and sighed with relief as I realised my own
stupidity. This woman wasn't a police officer. She looked up at me with
grey eyes hidden behind the rim of her glasses, blonde hair in a messy
ponytail which looked like I could have done a better job at doing her
hair, and I was a guy. I realised I was being judgmental and probably
gawping at her. I relaxed, what did this woman want anyway?

"Yes?" I politely replied. She smiled slightly, before looking
down at the leaflets in her hand.

"I was just wondering if you'd like to take one of these leaflets?"
she stuttered. I considered walking away when I thought this woman had
probably had a bad day. I mean, giving out leaflets isn't the best job in
the world. I took a leaflet from her and smiled.

"Oh, thank you. But I do have to go now, have a nice day!" I said
with my most charming voice, or at least I thought it was charming.

"You too." She simply said, before turning away from me and asking
another person if they wanted a leaflet. I walked the rest of the distance
to my car, pressing the open button on my keys as I got closer. As I
reached the door, I stopped, looked down at the bag and sighed. Maybe I
wasn't doing the right thing. It was stealing after all, or was it? I had
handed the guy at the checkout money, I mean, the money wasn't real, I had
temporarily shifted the appearance of the paper to make it look like money,
but they wouldn't notice until later when the paper restores to it's
original state. That's what I was, a shifter. I could change the appearance
of an object with the wave of my hand, for a short period of time only. I
almost drove away, but I couldn't. There were people in the world that were
working their asses off in crappy jobs, and to have stuff stolen from you
wasn't a nice feeling. I picked the bag up, locked the car, headed to the
cash machine and got the money I owed out of the bank. Walking back into
the store, to the checkout I nervously stood in front of the guy that had
served me a mere 5 minutes before.

"Umm, hi, I got these clothes just now and realised I didn't pay,
so here." I spluttered out in one breath, as I threw the money at him.

"Err, are you sure Sir? I could have sworn you gave me the money."
He said, with a confused look on his face.

"I'm sure, I looked in my wallet and I had all my money still
there." I smiled, knowing I'd done the right thing, as I walked back to my
car. I chuckled as I remembered the guys cute face in confusion as he took
the money and put it in the till.

* * *

I stood in front of the mirror as I tried my new clothes on,
clothes that I had not stolen. I will not use my ability for bad. I thought
as I took the new t-shirt off. I stared at my nineteen year old body in the
mirror, I wasn't a bad looking guy with my almost flawless creamy skin,
dirty blonde swept back hair and cute features. Dark blue eyes, a straight
nose with a slight curve up at the tip but I particularly liked my lips the
best, a healthy red colour and finally a five o'clock shadow. My eyes
lowered as I looked at my toned body, I wasn't big into muscle building but
I kept in shape, I did have a weakness to chocolate though.

I glanced over at the alarm clock on my bedside table. 5:01pm?
Where did the time go? Kate should be home soon. Kate Jefferies, my foster
mother, a sweet woman that I'd been with for almost my entire life. She
stood almost 6 feet tall, and had beautiful long black hair with gorgeous
chocolate eyes that would make any straight man fall to his knees. The
clothes she wore always complimented her tan skin and healthy
physique. When she smiled she revealed straight white teeth, the power of
braces she would always say. I never knew what had become of my parents,
Kate wouldn't tell me about them, neither does Chris, my foster dad. They
always say when they adopted me that they wasn't told about my parents,
just that they were missing, but I always felt like they wasn't being
completely honest with me. All I had to remember my parents by was a
photograph, showing my Mum, Dad and myself taken when I was probably just a
few weeks old. Chris Jefferies, a man of few words, but when he spoke there
was only one thing to do, listen. He had one of those leader voices, he
made good decisions and knew when to talk and what to say. He was tall,
about 6ft 4, and had the body of a god. His facial features were striking,
when you looked at him it was almost impossible to tear your eyes away from
his beauty. Gorgeous facial features, with piercing blue eyes and brown
hair which went well with his slightly darker than pale skin tone. They
both knew I was gay, I had told them when I was in my early teens and they
still loved and accepted me the way I was, I was grateful.

I made my way downstairs and switched the kettle on, Kate loved my
coffees, unless she was just saying that to make me feel better, but I
doubt it, I did make a fine coffee.

As I poured the hot water in Kate's favourite mug, I heard the keys
in the door and watched, with a smile on my face as she walked through the
door, keys in one hand, phone in the other.

"Okay hon, no don't worry about it, it's my night to cook
anyway. Okay. Love you too." She hung up the phone, disappointment on her
face.

"Trouble?" I asked concerned. She looked up at me, disappointment
disappearing from her face to be replaced with a smile.

"Not at all, is that coffee I smell?" Her smile brightened. I knew
she liked my coffee.

"So why the disappointed face when you hung up the phone?" I asked,
still slightly concerned, it couldn't be that bad if she was happy from
just smelling some coffee.

"Coffee first, talky talky later." As she picked up the mug and
took a big gulp, only for moments later her face to redden slightly,
flapping her hands trying to cool her mouth.

"Careful, it's hot!" I chuckled. Laughing even more when she
plunged her head into the sink and put the cold tap on to drink.

"Yeah, now you tell me. Bitch!" She laughed. We had a good
relationship, probably due to the fact that there wasn't a huge age gap
between us. She was only sixteen years older than me.

"Now tell me, what was the call all about?" I asked, after we had
calmed down from our laughing.

"You know, this is the third night this week the hospital has kept
Chris working late," she explained, "it just makes me nervous when he's not
walking through the door half an hour after me as usual." Chris was a
doctor, and apparently he was really good at his job, I'd never had to go
to the hospital but apparently his surgery success rate was very high.

"Well, being a doctor is a lot of work, and he's good at it, I
guess that's why they like to have him work late, he saves a lot of lives,
right?" I asked, I could see why Kate would be irritated by it, but he was
saving lives, wasn't that more important?

"I know that, Jaymes, but there are other good doctors there too, I
don't see why we should have to suffer because he's good at what he does."
She said, making the quotation marks with her fingers as she said the word
'good'. She had called me 'Jaymes', and while it was my actual name, she
knew I preferred it when people called me 'Jay', I guess I'd struck a
little nerve. But honestly, I could see why she'd be upset about it, and it
was true, there were other good doctors, why should Chris have to stay on
overtime a lot?

We had made our way into the living room and made small talk as we
watched TV.

"So what time do you think he's coming home?" I asked, as the 6
o'clock news played in the background.

"I'm not sure, I'm guessing around 10 tonight if he's lucky." She
sighed, knowing that she'd probably be in bed by the time he'd get home.

After a few minutes of talking, Kate had stopped speaking
mid-sentence, and averted her eyes to the TV.

"You were saying?" I asked, expecting her to carry on the
sentence. She didn't get distracted easily.

"Shh, wait a second." She hushed me, her eyes glued to the TV.

"Police are treating the collapse of the building suspiciously,
there is also a bomb squad standing nearby to check the place out when some
of the debris has been moved. Medics are also standing close as there are
people still trapped inside the building. Security cameras have spotted a
tall man wearing a dark coloured hooded jacket fleeing the scene just as
the building collapsed. There is no further news at this time, back to you
guys in the studio." The reported finished. I looked over at Kate, her eyes
wide in shock.

"Kate, what's wrong?" I asked, concerned. For a minute she didn't
answer me, she was frozen. She turned her head towards me, eyes still wide
in shock, she was breathing harder, and tears were threatening to fall from
her eyes.

"Jay," her voice, barely a whisper, "that's the hospital Chris
works at." She stuttered, as tears fell from her eyes.
