The Other Side A Mutants Story
By: Talon

My head was filled with noise, so much noise. Shouts and screams,
flashes of destruction were all I saw when my eyes were open and when they
were closed. Every day was like a waking nightmare for me. I know no one
ever said life would be easy but they also never said it would have to be
this hard. Being a mutant isn't who I am but it seems like that's all that
defines me. Looking up at the alter from my seat in the pews I couldn't
help but notice the irony of my situation. My family was never one that
went to church regularly; matter of fact I can count on one hand the number
of times I've been. But after all that's happened I don't have anywhere
else to go. I honestly don't even know if I believe in God. The more I
think about it the angrier I get. Where was God when I was abandoned? Where
is God now that mutants around the world are suffering? Hell, maybe he
hates mutants too.

"The church is closing its doors for the night. Son, do you have somewhere
to go?"

I was so wrapped up in my thoughts I didn't even hear someone approach. I
turned my head in the direction of the voice. To my left stood a tall black
man, he couldn't have been more than fifty. He had black mustache and a
really nice suite. If I had to imagine what a preacher would look like it
would probably be something akin to him. " Yes, of course I just lost track
of time. I walked here and then it started raining pretty heavily and so I
was just waiting it out."

" Its raining cats and dogs out there. I don't blame you for wanting to
stay dry. People call me Preacher Daniels; my church is a home for
everyone. You can take your time and if you change your mind and want to
call someone I also have a phone you can use if you need it."

I was definitely glad to hear him say that. I needed to think of somewhere
I could go. These past couple weeks I've been sleeping anywhere I
could. You name it and I've probably slept there. Most of those places I
dont recommend. I looked the preacher in the eyes and gave him my biggest
smile. "Thank you for that. I promise I wont be to much longer." He
returned the smile and patted me on the back before he walked away.

Okay, where do I go from here? No one is going to take me in. I tried going
to a shelter but they ask to many questions. I'm sure they would just try
put me in the hands of more people who will hate me. Hate. That word is
something I know all to well. I've seen it in the eyes of my friends, my
family, anyone who I have ever trusted. Hate is something you feel in the
very core your being; in the very pit of your soul. Maybe being alone away
from people is the only answer for me. That way no one can hurt me and I
cant hurt anyone else.

I heard the preacher approach from behind me again. No doubt he needs me to
leave so he can go home for the night. I haven't checked the time in a
while but I was sure it was late. I could t blame him for wanting to go
home. If I could I would too. On top of that I could still hear the pitter
patter of rain drops hitting the roof. It was going to be a very long
night. "I'm sorry Mr. Daniels I was just on my way out."

"If you were to leave where would you go? You can lie to the old man all
you like but I know the truth." Okay that voice definitely wasn't
Mr. Daniels. I jerked my head to the left to see a tall man shrouded in
darkness. I couldn't make him out. Its like all of the lights in the room
just dimmed to the point where staring at him was straining my eyes.

"Excuse me? I don't think I know you and that means there is no way you
could know me." Something seemed off about this whole thing. Where was the
preacher? This church looked like it was losing power, at any second it
looked like it would just shut off. You would think preacher Daniels would
be moving around, grabbing flash lights ,checking the circuit breakers, or
something.

"Listen this has been fun but I have to get going." I practically jumped
out of that pew trying to make my way to the door. All the while not making
eye contact with the strange man.

"Aren't you tired of running and hiding like you were some animal? The
humans would have you believe that your a disease that needs to be
eradicated but say it is their flames that need to be extinguished so that
ours may be brighter. I can give you sanctuary complete with a warm bed, a
full belly, and world filled with your own kind. Let me help you because
helping you helps me and in turn saves this world."

His words stopped dead. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Someone
actually cared. If this was real and his offer was true then he would be
the first person to accept me for who I was. His words held no malice or
judgment; only truth. I wish you could of heard this man speak because it
was mesmerizing. He spoke with such conviction that it pulled at something
deep within me. I wanted to believe in this man and everything he said but
if there was one thing that this world has taught me its that if something
looks to good to be true then it probably is.

I turned around to face the man masked in shadows. "Who....are you? You say
you dont think we should be hiding like animals but right now I cant even
see your face. This room has darkened to the point of almost blindness and
I don't think the storm is the cause. How can you say one thing then do
another? Don't you think that's just a little bit hypocritical?"

I know it was the best idea to be taunting the guy who could possibly be
the boogie man but I call em like I see em. I have always been that way and
I don't plan on changing any time soon.

"Your smart, good. I knew I made the right choice by coming here. I am
Magneto and I am going to bring mutant kind into a new era. I want you to
be apart of that. " The room lit up like it was earlier before this
encounter. With the shadows lifted the mysterious mutant was no longer
concealed. He stood tall with purple armor. Around his back flew a long
cape and around his head stood a helmet that revealed just enough of his
face to satisfy the curiosity but left enough covered to give the illusion
of mystique. I remember seeing him on the news when mutants first were made
public.

"Is your offer for real? I have to know because I don't need anymore lies
in my life." I tried to hide the sounds of desperation and hope in my voice
but something tells me he picked up on those things before we even
exchanged words.

"My offer is very real and so is what I'm going to do. If you want to be
part of something better, something amazing, something so much more than
yourself then take my hand. But don't take it unless you are sure that this
is want you really want. I wouldn't want to take you away from your life
here."

His words made laugh inside but the smile didn't quite reach my lips but a
sneer sure did. "Don't worry there is nothing here for me to want to hold
on too. I'm ready when you are." I put my hands in his and together we
walked out the door. Waiting for us were two metal spheres.

"What are these?" I said pointing to the one closes to me.

"These are my transport spheres. I use them to travel great distances in a
short amount of time."

"where are we going?" It was only then that I never realized I had never
bothered to ask.

"To your future." With that we stepped into the orbs.
