When Fantasy Becomes Reality

Chapter Five: A Difficult Choice

Six months have passed since Peter first came into my life, and in turn
absolutely flipped it upside down. The adoption process had been
surprisedly easier than I had thought, with a few called in favors to
discreet agents I trusted the case was sped along. To make matters easier
the court ruled in my favor, apparently it was harder to find homes for
teenagers as opposed to smaller children, especially ones who had a history
such as Peter's.

As I had suspected Peter was flourishing in school, with the right support
and care he excelled in his studies and was quickly on his way to becoming
the astronaut he always dreamed about. For myself things had changed
considerably, my hours had to change somewhat so I could be home at a
normal time for Peter and it became increasingly difficult to excuse my
absences from him for various tasks. His trust for me was all that seemed
to keep his suspicion at bay, and I had yet to hear any word from the
Council about reassignment.

It was on a Thursday that I had called out of work in order to go on
another menial task set to me by the Council, it involved investigating
some strange fluctautions in the force that had been noticed nearby. When I
arrived on the scene it was to a fatal car crash, the family had seemingly
swerved off the road an hit a tree head on thereby instantly killing the
father and mother. I found in the backseat two children huddled together
for comfort, twins by the look of them, and both were defintely force
sensitive. I signaled for a transport and waited with them until a Republic
shuttle arrived, destined to bring them to the Order to be trained.

I know what you're thinking, why would I go to such great lengths to help
Peter but not these children? The simple answer is that they were young
enough to be trained and had no one else, Peter was too old and was too
much of a risk. Not an easy choice, but a necessary one. After that I had
some time to spare and decided to head home early and surprise him, he
often complained these days about never seeing me enough.

While driving home my holo started going off, "Always at the worst times" I
thought. I quickly answered and was greeted by the sight of the wiry frame
of Master Siralla, her eyes still too big for the rest of her face.

"Greetings Master," I bowed my head "To what do I owe the pleasure, I'm in
transit at the moment."

"Greetings Eric, this shouldn't take long but I'm afraid it's terribly
important."

I frowned, "Important how master? Did you expose another assassin?" I
asked.

She sighed and shook her head, "No I'm afraid not although that does
pertain to why I'm contacting you. You have been reassigned Eric."

My heart immediately filled with dread, what about Peter? What about the
trust and love I had just spent the better part of six months nurturing?

I gulped, "When will I be extracted and to where?" I asked, trying to keep
a straight face.

"Within the week Eric. The High Council has decided that it is in your best
interest, as well as the best interest of all of Earth, that you be
recalled and put back onto active duty. You have a gift for fieldwork Eric
and perhaps we can find a way to stop these attempts on your life. As long
as you're moving the Empire will have difficultly tracking you down to
kill."

It made sense I had to admit, but still I was unsure of how to explain this
to Peter. I had enough money to get him through college and more, but that
wasn't the problem. The real issue was how he would would handle being
abandoned again, to raise up his hopes so high and then to crush him would
surely push him over the edge. He wouldn't want to live anymore.

"Eric... Eric? ERIC?" I shook my head and started at Master Siralla's
shouting.

"Huh.. What?" I said.

"Are you alright Eric? You look solemn, I can assume that leaving your
homeworld after so long away must disturb you."

"Yeah... Yeah, that's it. Thank you for informing me Master, I will begin
preparations at once." I replied, hands shaking.

"See that you do, may the Force be with you Eric."

"And with you as well Master." I replied.

As soon as she hung up I relased the breath I hadn't realized I was holding
in. "God what am I supposed to do?" I thought. I couldn't leave Peter, I
just couldn't do it. But to stay with him would mark me as a traitor or
worse, there had to be another way out of this. It's times like this that I
wished I had Master Tik around, he always seemed to know what to do.

The question still pestered me when I pulled into the driveway, and it was
only then I noticed the strange BMW parked outside of my house. I quickly
exited my car and my heart began pounding as I neared the door, if
assassins had hurt Peter...

When I got to the door I hesitated, the door had been forced open with a
crowbar of some sorts. Pretty sloppy for Imperial Assassins, perhaps they
were theives instead. I slowly opened the door and my heart caught in my
throat. There in front of me were three men, all wearing hoodies and with
pants around their ankles, and between them I could barely discern the
naked form of Peter, struggling and crying to be let go. Of course his
cries were more gurgles with a cock shoved down his throat and another in
his ass.

The last concious thought I had was, "My God they're running a train on
Peter." Then everything went red.

In a moment of blind rage I filled myself with the Force, more than was
rationally wise, until it almost seemed to burst through my poors. Using
the Force I tossed the man lodged in Peters ass across the room and into
the kitchen, where he crashed into the shelves with broken glasses
shattering everywhere. The other two men looked up in shock and fear, then
anger. They drew pistols from their hoodies and began firing, using the
force I stopped their bullets in a Matrix sort of way causing them to
pause. I carefully reached into the hidden pocket of my coat and pulled out
my lightsaber. The men shook as it hummed to life.

Before they could react I sliced their bodies clean through and let my
anger take hold, chopping them up into smaller pieces and slamming my
lightsaber down repeatedly into their now dead corpses. Muttering with each
stab downward.

"Little pieces of shit, how dare you touch my son... pig faced son of a
bitch..." I muttered angrily, coating myself in the deep shade of gore.

"Paul! Paul! PAUL STOP IT!" I halted suddenly at the voice, and looked over
at Peter. He sat in the corner naked and hunched up, tears streaking down
his face as he looked at me in horor. What did I see in those eyes? Fear,
repulsion, distrust, and betrayal. As I looked at him my mind cleared and
it was only then I looked at my once spotless living room. There was blood
everywhere and my lightsaber dripped with it.

"Oh God, OH GOD!" I yelled, "What have I done? Peter?" I turned to look at
him and slowly made my way over to him, he yelled and scrambled away from
me heading upstairs. I supposed I couldn't blame him, everything he knew
about me and the universe was just flipped on its head not to mention it
was in the middle of a rape. It was in the quiet silence that followed that
I noticed the scratching and whining at the backdoor.

I made my way over to the kitchen avoiding the glass shards and the dead
body on my counter, unlocking the door Jax rushed in teeth barred and
quills raised.

I patted him on the head, "Too little too late boy." I sighed, they must
have come after Peter let Jax out to pee. For the next 20 minutes I tried
to clean up the mess as best I could. I allowed Jax to eat the bodies in
order to get rid of any evidence of the three men, then made my way
upstairs. Peter wasn't in any of the rooms, but I noticed the faint sound
of crying coming from the attic.

When I found him he was still huddled naked in a corner crying softly into
his arms. "Peter," I gently said making my way over to him.

"GET WAY FROM ME YOU MONSTER!" He yelled at me. I froze, unsure of what to
do. Slowly I retreated to the opposite corner and sat down on the dusty
floor.

"Listen, Peter..." I began.

"Don't you talk to me you murdering freak!" he yelled, "What the fucking
hell are you anyway? Some sort of Alien?! Leave me alone!"

"Peter, it's Paul..."

"There is no fucking way you're Paul! And if you are then that makes you a
lying son of a bitch too!" He began sobbing again.

Shit. How was I going to get through to him?

"Okay Peter, just listen. Don't say anything but just listen as I explain
everything, it will sound impossible but it's the truth." I sighed, here it
goes.

"Well to begin with I am not an alien, I am from Earth just as you are
although my comrades are various species. I..." Here it was, "I... am a
Jedi Peter. Jedi are real and I am the first human from Earth to be trained
as one."

Peter had stopped crying, and now looked at me with skepticism and
anger. "Bullshit, you know I like Star Wars and you're seriously trying to
spin me some ass-half tale that your a Jedi? Impossible." He spat back,
venom dripping in his voice.

"I assure you Peter that it is the truth, I thought much the same way as
you when I first realized it although my explanation was a lot
more... shocking. Let me finish please." He glared at me but made no
attempt to interupt again.

"I should start from the begining, I was a college student ten years ago
when the Empire attacked all the major population centers of Earth as a
ploy against the Republic. It was in that fighting that I discovered I had
latent Force powers, and in the process... killed a Sith Lord of some
importance. After that I was trained as a Jedi for the next two years
before being raised to Jedi Knight. I have spent the past 8 years fighting
the Empire and pushing back the forces of darkness. Then I was assigned
back here where I was to monitor for Force-sensitive children to be trained
and to watch for any suspicous activity.

"That day in the mall six months ago, for instance," I reminded him, "Of
when you though I had abandoned you. That strange man was actually an
Imperial Assassin sent to kill me. I sent you away so I could deal with him
on the roof quickly, evidently I wasn't fast enough." He blushed.

"Listen, I know it sounds impossible but I swear to you it is the
truth. How else could you explain what I did down there, I used the Force
to stop those bullets, used a lightsaber to kill those men who were raping
you."

"You also killed a man with the Force and diced up those other two, how can
that be justified as a Jedi?" He blurted out.

I chuckled, "I was never very... adept... at controlling my emotions like
the Masters did. Often it didn't make much of a difference, until I met
you."

"So what? I was just some pawn to use as cover? Did your bosses arrange for
us to meet and for you to adopt me so easy? I'm no fool Paul, that was way
too convienent." He had a point there.

"It was the Force Peter, it guides us and moves through us. And it drew us
together where we would fall in love. I DO love you Peter, that was never
fake. In fact the High Council doesn't know anything about you, they
wouldn't... approve... of our relationship had they found out."

He sat silent for a while, thinking, before nodding to himself and walking
over to me. "I still can't fully trust you, but I do believe you otherwise
how else could you do what I just saw. Plus it does account for all your
random meetings." He held out his hand to me, "Let's start over, I'm
Peter." I smiled at his resilience and forwardness.

"Fine but no more secrets," I replied, "my name is Eric." He looked up at
me, shocked.

"Then Paul was..."

"My cover name, don't take it personally I wanted to tell you so many
times."

"Geez is the only one normal in this house Jax then?" He smiled.

"Well... Jax is not from around here, if you ever see him angry you'll see
what I mean. But listen, are you okay? Did those men hurt you badly?" I
asked concerned.

"No! Well, yes it hurt like hell and I kept begging them to stop but... I
owed them."

I looked at him questioningly and he sighed, "Remember I told you some
thugs were after me? Well you met said thugs and then killed them."

I ground my teeth, so those bastards...

"But," he said holding up his hands interrupting my thoughts, "I'm glad you
did, because now we can finally live together without fear."

"About that," I said and he looked at me concerned. "I promised you no lies
Peter and so here's the truth of it. After the incident at the mall the
High Council has been talking about reassigning me back to fieldwork to
avoid my being detected for assassination again. The decison was just made
today and I'll be leaving by the end of the week."

Peter looked absolutley crestfallen, "Y--you c--can't leave me here Eric, I
won't let you. Please... don't." He began to cry again and I wrapped my
arms around him.

"Shhh... hush now little one. There is a way." A thought had occurred to me
during our conversation, one so simple it was almost laughable.

Sniffling he looked up at me, "H--how?"

I smiled as I looked down at him, "You're going to be my Padawan."

He looked at me incredulously, "Me? A Jedi? But don't I have to be able to
use the Force or something?"

"Of course, and you already can. How else do you explain the stuff that
happened to you at the orphanage, or the fact that I could sense you miles
away before we met. I thought you were some Force anomaly until that day at
the bar, then I realized just how gifted you were."

"You knew this whole time and never said anything?!" He yelled, "Why wasn't
I trained, why didn't you recruit me like the others?"

"Because you were too old, and there was great anger and potential for
darkness in you when we first met. That was a risk the Council would never
take, but if I were to refer you and offer you as my Padawan... they'd have
to accept it. Besides, they've been trying to get me to take a Padawan on
for years, better you then some dithering idiot." I smiled at him. "Don't
worry I'll work it all out."

"But... But what about your fieldwork? Won't they stop you since you have
to keep moving?" He asked innocently as I got up to walk downstairs.

I turned and winked at him, "I've always been more of a hands-on learner
myself... and teacher for that matter."

Peter smiled his wonderful smile and scampered after me to downstairs.

**************************************************************************************

So that is how me and Peter found ourselves in a shuttle headed to
Corscuant later that week, watching the wonder in Peter's eyes as he gazed
at Earth receeding in the distance.

"Never thought you might actually go in space, huh? It's quite a sight to
behold."

He looked at me and I could see tears in his eyes, "There was never
anything left for me there anyway, not now that I'm with you" He said. It
was then he noticed I had changed into my Jedi robes. "When do I get some
cool robes?"

I smiled at him, "When you offically become my Padawan, little one. Don't
worry too much about it, just stick by me."

It wasn't much later that I could see Corscuant coming up, Peter once again
had his face glued to the window mouth agape in wonder.

"There are so many buildings Eric!" he said, "It's even bigger than in the
movies!"

I chuckled. "The galaxy is much different than what you saw in the movies,"
I said. "And much more dangerous," I thought to myself grimly.

The shuttle dropped us off at the enterance to the Jedi Temple, as I
observed the newfound wonder in Peters eyes I had a moment of
nostalgia. Only a decade before standing where he stood with the same look
of bewilderment plastered on my face, it made me smile.

"Let's go Peter, we have much to do and little time to do it in." He
followed me as we entered the Temple, stares followed us all the way to the
chambers of the High Council. Some were of respect and reverence, others
were of curiosity and disapproval of Peter. We ignored them and continued
forward.

Soon the large golden doors of the High Council chamber came into view, to
this day the intrinsic designs still awe me, they swung open as we
approached. Walking into the room the same large table and chairs came into
view, with Master Siralla and several others seated around.

Master Siralla acknowledged me with a blank stare, I had informed her of my
new padawan and she expressed her displeasure. I stopped in front of them
and bowed my head, gesturing for Peter to do the same.

"Masters," I said "I have come as you asked, with me here is the child I
intend to take for my new padawan: Peter."

Peter blushed as all eyes turned towards him, "Masters." He whispered.

"Yes, I have informed the Council of your decision Eric and we have some
concerns, foremost among them is the age of your ward. How old are you
Peter?" Master Siralla asked.

"Thirteen, Master. Fourteen in a few months," he replied.

There were grumblings around the table, Master Siralla continued, "Older
than we normally accept understand, well Eric?"

I sighed audibly, "Masters I was 18 years old when I was first accepted by
Master Tikmawa, far older than Peter here and besides he already shows some
aptitude in the force. I'm sure you all can sense him as strongly as I
can."

Peter shivered as all the Masters nodded slowly, "Yes he shows promise" a
gruff voiced Cathar Master said, "but I sense anger as well although
subdued and..." he stopped, looking at me. "A very strong bond with you as
well, too strong for someone you just met." There verbal complaints at the
table now.

"Silence!" Master Siralla held up a hand for the room to quiet down. "Eric,
I would hope that you have an explanation for this?" A frown creased her
face.

I glanced at Peter and saw that he had gone pale, he had yet to fully
control his thoughts and feelings although I had begun a rudimentry
instruction of how to.

"I do Masters. I met Peter around six months ago, when I did he was
homeless, cold, and starving. Since then I have nursed him back to health,
given him love and support, and provided for him. He..." Here it goes. "He
is also my adopted son, and I intend to train him as my padawan."

The room erupted with shouting, the Masters argued back and forth over the
wisdom of this and it was Master Siralla who finally brought back
order. "Please Everyone be quiet!" The room fell silent. "Although this is
unprecidented we also cannot ignore the danger that this can pose, Eric you
have never had a padawan and you know we discourage emotional attachments."

"Ahh yes," came a familiar voice from behind me, "we wouldn't want a Master
to feel anything for his padawan after all, he might accidently care or
something." I turned to see Master Tik striding towards me. I couldn't help
the shit-eating grin that broke out on my face.

"Master Tikmawa," Master Siralla regarded him with a curt nod "we are all
aware of your... theories on the importance of emotions."

"Eric is human Masters, and so is young Peter here," he put a hand on
Peters shoulder. Peter just looked up in amazment at Master Tik, this is
the first Twi'lek he had encountered in real life after all. Master Tik
continued, "And I speak from personal experience when I tell you that
humans from Earth are an emotional species, it is part of them and keeps
them alive. Their instincts are closely tied to their emotions, isn't that
right Eric?"

I smiled and bowed to him, "Yes Master."

He continued, "I believe my former padawan should be given a chance, you
all can attest to the success he's had thus far. And who else to better
train a human from Earth than one from there himself, especially one that
young Peter is already familiar with."

The other Masters nodded, even Master Siralla herself. "Very well," she
said "I grant your request Eric, Peter shall be your Padawan and you his
Master. Peter?"

Peter jumped, "Y--yes Master?"

She smiled at him, "Congragulations. You are now a member of the order, in
training of course, and I can think of no finer or more distinguished Jedi
to train you. Eric, you know what to do. You may go."

Master Tik, Peter and I bowed once more, turned, and walked out the large
doors. Once outside I began laughing.

"Seems like I owe you one Master," I said.

He smiled his slightly aged face at me, "You owe me far more than just one
Eric, but I am glad you are doing this thing, you're lucky I heard that you
had arrived early. Peter?"

"Huh?" He said, distracted by the whole situation to have been paying
attention. Master Tik squatted down to his level.

"Listen young one, learn well from your Master and show him your
respect. And..." here he raised a finger, "keep an eye out on my former
Padawan, he tends to get himself into trouble." Peter grinned and looked up
at me.

"I will."

"Good, then I should be going. I have a class to teach today, Eric." He
nodded at me and walked away, arms clapsed behind him.

"Well," I said, "welcome to the club Peter, now lets find you some new
robes." I walked down the hall, Peter at my heels.

The End.
