Ice Man – Part 5

Year 2021 – Deep Cove, North Vancouver, Canada

Rogue suddenly died last Wednesday. Her body went through a massive
infection that caused organ failure. We buried her in a local graveyard in
Vancouver that had a great view of the mountains. I'm still recovering from
the loss of – Hell, I'm still recovering from the first wave of
deaths. Those who stood to fight died in the first wave. Cyclops, Beast,
Gambit, naming them is hard even now. So little of us survived the attack,
if it weren't for the teleporters we would all be ash. Rogue is gone, and
I'm truly alone.

Kitty had developed a new power. Colossus has been helping her with
learning how to use it. Kitty's base mutation is to surpass the limitations
of space and time. She can now, not only walk through walls, but she can
walk through time. It makes it a lot easier to avoid Sentinels when you can
change the past. Colossus doesn't like her traveling too far back. There's
always the chance she wakes up in a reality where she's no longer
alive. She tired changing Rogue's fate, but her death was inevitable.

Blink and Warpath's roles hasn't changed. But the time those two have been
spending together, they've started developing feelings for each other. If
only they knew how painful it would be to lose someone you love.

We've been avoiding Sentinels for months now – at least for me, but for
Kitty, she remembers everything. She's been watching us die over and over
as we've been living this passive life style. We're all very thankful for
her powers.

The ground shook, and there was a blast and an explosion. Kitty was knocked
unconscious from the strike. With her unconscious, we're forced to stall
for time. I turned to see two Sentinels...

Me: Colossus, keep Kitty safe. Warpath!

The Sentinels went for Blink first. My entire body turned to ice and I
fought. I blasted one of the mechanic beings with ice and froze it solid
while Warpath fought the other. I had just enough time to break off one of
its arms before it defrosted the ice with its heated core. Blink threw a
projectile and it opened a portal, cutting off its other arm. As the
machine fell its face opened and shot flames as it came tumbling down. My
right arm was severely burned from its uncontrolled blaze.

Blink and I saw that Warpath was in trouble. The Sentinel had taken hold of
him by the neck. Its face began to open, and we knew what was going to
happen next – fire. Blink threw a projectile and opened a portal between
the robot's face and Warpath. The other side of the portal opened a little
too close to where Blink and I were. The fire came and Blink and I suffered
from intense burns. The fire stopped and the portal closed. However, no one
had the strength to save Warpath from another round of blazing flares –
all we could do was watch, and wait for our turn.

The Sentinel's face opened again, Warpath still struggling to get out of
the robot's grip. We could see the beginnings of the flame brewing inside
the mechanical structure. There was a burst of light, and the Sentinel lost
its head. The robot grew limp and released its clutch on Warpath. The light
was familiar and it felt like home. Before I passed out, I whispered a
name... Charlie.

Year 2021 – Apartment in Moscow, Russia

I woke up to the smell of pancakes. There was someone sleeping next to me,
I didn't who. I was still too tired to open my eyes. I just pull them
closer, my chest now skin to skin with their back. I took a deep inhale and
caught the scent of someone I knew, a scent that made my heart race.

Me: Charlie?

I said with my eyes still closed. I didn't want to open them unless I was
wrong. Am I dead? Is this the afterlife? Is this a dream? Maybe it's not
him... Whoever it was didn't say anything, they just turned around. We're
now forehead to forehead, nose to nose. They tilted their head sideways and
I knew a kiss was coming. Our lips met, gently at first, but then more
passionately. I knew who it was – I'm certain of it. I have to open my
eyes, I have to. I grabbed both his/her shoulders and held them back. I
opened my eyes only to find them filling with tears. It was him, the light
that ends my darkness. This time I spoke surely, but with a crack from my
emotional state.

Me: Charlie, you're alive.

He just smiled.
