I woke up from my sleep to Cassie freaking out. The plane was going
through some rough turbulence and she looked like she was going to die. The
plane continued to shake violently and the seatbelt signs turned on above.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we seem to have encountered some unexpected
weather patterns. For the next little bit we will be experiencing some
turbulence so please fasten your seatbelts. Thank you." A pleasant female
voice announced over the intercom.

<Shit Alex I can't take this fuck. I swear to god if I don't be
careful someone around me is gonna get hurt. I'm having trouble controlling
my instincts to defend myself. The last thing we I want is a plane full of
comatose passengers.> Cassie said in my head.

<Cassie just chill out O.K.? This is completely normal it's just
gonna be a bit of a bumpy ride.> I sent back to her, using my empathic
powers to calm her nerves.

Finally she was able to relax as the plane continued to bounce up
and down. She was being brave the poor girl, she never was good at flying.
Suddenly the overhead oxygen masks came down above our heads and Cassie
snapped. She yelped and suddenly a few people beside us lolled over in
their seats, unconscious for the time being.

She gritted her teeth. I could tell she was trying to get her
powers under control. I didn't know Cassie was having so much trouble
keeping her abilities in check. No wonder she had rushed at the chance to
go to Xavier's school.

<How long has this been going on for?> I asked her.

<A little while now, I didn't want to worry you Alex...>

I mentally grumbled and looked around. There were a few children
who seemed to be just as scared as Cassie and a "New York Business Type"
kind of guy ran for the bathroom looking kind of pale. The plane's shaking
started to decrease until we were flying smooth again. I heard Cassie
breath a sigh of relief beside me, and the tense vibes I had been feeling
off her stopped as well.

"How long was I out for?" I asked quietly.

She checked her watch and looked up, "About four hours."

A handsome looking flight attendant came down the isle with a cart
full of food. He started to hand out trays until he got to us. His gaze
lingered on me as he set down one of the plates in front of me, and then
Cassie.

There were two plates of mashed potatoes, instant no doubt. Some
kind of mystery meat as well as green peas and carrots. We started to eat
and the food wasn't half bad. Except the peas which were a greenish brown
kind of colour.

<They must have been cooked to long> Cassie giggled in my head as
she threw a few at me.

Of course a five minute pea fight ensued until a lady behind us got
hit with one and complained. We stopped our pseudo-violence for the time
being. Residual laughter would break out every once in a while, until the
lady started kicking our seats. Cassie guffawed loudly.

I was lucky enough to have a window seat and I peered out at the
billowy clouds. The sun was rising, turning their normal white into a
multi-faceted colour ranging from deep red to light yellow, and everything
in between. I smiled as I thought of the world below us, so far away. It
was disorienting when I thought too deeply about where we were so I turned
my attention to Cassie.

She was of aboriginal origin, with light olive coloured skin and
oval dark brown eyes. She often nods with her eyes, closing them and then
opening them slowly as her head moves gracefully down then up. She has
red/purplish brown hair that is cut a few inches below her
shoulders. Cassie possesses a quiet demeanor, but not to the point of being
unconfident. Quite the contrary. She's comfortable in her own skin and has
a silent, confident air to her. To me she is a paradigm of strength.

I started to dose off in my chair, tired from a lack of sleep...

I woke up later as we were landing in Ottawa. We had to transfer in
the Ottawa International Airport, in order to fly to New York, NY.

Cassie and I came off the plane and into the busy Ottawa
terminal. It was at least ten times as bad as Saskatoon's. We waded through
the sea of people to get to our next gate. It took us a good half an hour
but we were finally seated on our second plane of the trip. To say the
flight was eventful would be a lie. In fact it was filled with a lot of
sleeping and reading.

I was ecstatic when we finally got off the plane in New
York. Cassie and I picked up our baggage and walked out into the New York
air. I coughed for a minute before I was able to adjust to the air. It had
a considerably lower quality of than the atmosphere we were use to in
Saskatchewan. Cassie walked out and whistled for one of the many yellow
cabs to stop.

"Cassie you ass that's such a cliché! Cabs don't stop for a whistle
in real life, you've seen way too many movies" I laughed at her. My victory
was short-lived as a bulky looking taxi screeched to a halt in the loading
zone.

She smirked like the smart ass she knew she was and got in,
signalling me to do the same. The cab's seats were covered in worn
leather. The driver was an old man in his fifties. Rosary beads hung from
his rear view mirror and there was a picture of a smiling family on his
dashboard.

"Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters please," She told the tired
looking man.

"And that is where?" He replied, visibly agitated.

Cassie handed him a print out of the address along with some
directions. I must have been in the kitchen when she had printed it off. We
drove through the heavy traffic. If it was mid afternoon by now, I would
hate to see the place during rush hour.

We sped along for a good hour and a half until we started to enter
the suburbs. Huge sky scrapers and government buildings no longer plagued
the sky. Instead there were many well kept residential homes and there were
even some trees.

He stopped in front of a regal looking mansion. It had to have been
three stories high and close to the size of a small school. We paid the
driver and got out, much to his relief. He had a 'Friends of Humanity',
type feel to him. Most likely bigoted towards mutants. We walked up a
winding road until we came to a metal gate with an X in the middle of it.
An engraved plaque held the address and some additional information about
the school.

The gates opened by themselves. It had a spooky feel like there was
an unseen presence opening them. We continued up the driveway which lead a
path between vast amounts of lush green grass and evergreen trees. There
was even a basketball court off to the side with a lone ball sitting half
on the court half on the folliage. Our feet broke the silence with a
step-scrape-step kind of sound.

I arrived a little ahead of Cassie. There was a large brass knob on
the oak wooden doors. I was about to knock when the door opened and a woman
I recognized as Ms. Munroe. She was in a staff portrait displayed on
Xavier's website. She had beautifully white hair. The kind you can only
get with old age. She had cocoa coloured skin tones and ice blue eyes.
Such strange attributes for someone of her ethnic background.

"High I'm Alex Cooper. I believe I talked to Mr. Summers on the
phone about attending your institution?" By now Cassie had caught up with
me and was standing beside me.

"Ah yes, My name is Ororo Munroe, and you must be Cassie" She held
out her hand to greet us in turn. "It's so nice to meet you, please come in
and I'll show you to your rooms."

We followed as Ms. Munroe practically glided through the
mansion. Her bone white hair flowing behind her. It reminded me of a
blizzard and it's icy, winding torrents. She stopped in front of a door and
opened it with some kind of a key card. Room number three forty-five.

"Charles has informed me of your situation, and we feel comfortable
letting you two stay in the same room together." At hearing this Cassie
smiled at me and set her bags down.

The room was very nice. It had two bay windows that looked out over
the school's backyard. The interior was modestly furnished with two double
beds, dark wooden floors and tasteful curtains. The daylight reflected in
an eerie blue on all the antique wood, natural light always made me
uncomfortable. Ms. Munroe helped us to unpack our things into the
beautifully carved dressers and we dressed the beds.

After we had settled in Ms. Munroe took us on a tour of the
school. I must say I was impressed by it's standard of excellence. We
passed many classes being taught by various teachers. We travelled down
the creaky floors and Ms. Munroe stopped to show us some of the art that
hung on the walls. While she was talking I peered into one of the rooms and
my eyes fell upon one boy in particular. He had ash blonde hair and a
beautiful face. His skin was a milky white and his eyes were an ice blue,
deeper than Ms. Munroe's. I shivered when he looked at me with them and
quickly turned my head back to the art on the wall.

We continued on and got something to eat in the cafeteria. By the
time the tour was over classes had let out. Ms. Munroe gave us our class
schedules and let us know that we had to go down to the medical lab at 9:00
AM tomorrow to be properly tested.

"I'm sorry I can't stay and keep you company, but I have some
business to attend to," Ms. Munroe apologised and then shouted at a student
in the crowd. "Robert!"

It was him. The boy with the blue eyes, he nodded in Ms. Munroe's
direction and made his way over to us. His walk was even attractive...

<Quit drooling Alex> Cassie said in my mind.

<Shut up! I swear if you say anything your ass is grass> I replied
while glaring at her and making sure to send her a few waves of unsettling
emotions. She glared at me and stopped when the boy arrived.

"You needed me Ms. Munroe?" He asked politely.

"Yes, would you mind keeping Alex and Cassie company? They're new
here and I'm sure you could introduce them to a few people."

"No problem," He replied with a bright smile.

After that, Ms. Munroe abruptly left us alone with the boy.

"Hi I'm bobby," He extended his hand to me. I shook it and noticed
how cold he was. The temperature I'd imagine a corpse to be.

He shook Cassie's hand as well. We made small talk for a little
while. I learned that he was one of the first students here back when the
institute was still called Charles Xavier's Westchester home. He had been
here since he was twelve and had the uncanny ability to manipulate the
cold.

We went back to his room to hang out and help him with his
homework. His place wasn't dirty in fact it was pretty clean. But it's
possible for a clean room to be MESSY. I swear this boy had clothes and
books every where. It was a wonder he ever found anything. The room was
also a few degrees cooler than the rest of the school. Bobby liked it cold.

<I'm gonna take off Alex. Leave you two alone!> Cassie said in my
mind.

"Hey listen guys I have some more stuff to unpack so I'll catch you
later O.K?" She lied.

"Yeah no problem Cassie, it was nice to meet you," he smiled.

"Call me Cass Bobby dear, my friends do." with that she left the
room and closed the door.

"She's quite the character," Bobby spoke.

"That she is. She's my heart and soul that girl. I don't know what
I'd do with out her."

"Oh so you two are..." He asked, a little less enthusiastic.

"Oh god no! We're just friends!" I started to break out into a fit
of laughter.

"So you think I'm funny huh?!" He laughed at me, "Here's funny for
you!" he said before he picked me up and started to tickle me. I swear I
have a weakness for tickling, I can't take it I'm way too sensitive...so I
fought back. We wrestled for a good thirty minutes before he tripped me and
I fell on him. Not just on him RIGHT on top of him. We both continued to
laugh until we realized how close we were to each other. Things got real
quiet and I looked into his eyes. Before I knew what was happening his
cold, soft lips were pressed against mine. We were kissing cautiously,
unsure of what each other's reaction would be. When I figured out that he
wasn't going to freak on me I began to french kiss him. He wasn't
expecting it, but he reciprocated. His lips were cold against my warm
mouth. I've always been warm my whole life, warmer than everyone else. To
say this was an amazing kiss would be an understatement.

We stopped kissing and smiled at each other. I laid my head down on
his chest and heard his heart beat slowly beneath his
chest. Thump...Thump...Thump.

"It's my cold blood," he said, "It makes my heart beat slower."

	"Oh" Was my reply.

We stayed on the floor comfortable with each other's company. It
was one of the most intimate moments of my life, lying in his arms. I
sighed and slowly drifted off to sleep.
