Chapter 2 -- Feelings

At the end of O-Week, heaps of college guys descended on St. Peters, as
only us freshers (first years) were here for O-Week. College started to
become very alive, and get very noisy. If we all hadn't had O-Week stuff at
the college I think we would all feel pretty left out, as most of the guys
left us freshers alone. They didn't exactly ignore us, like they chatted to
us a bit and stuff, but they already had their own friend groups.

I was a bit worried about my feelings for Tim. I'm getting a serious crush
on him. It's just that he's so cute, and so nice. Uni started in earnest
the next week, and they don't give you any time to phase into it. Luckily
Tim & I were doing the same subjects, so we were able to help each other
out with the work. Once, when we were going between lectures, I brought up
the subject of girls, and it moved around to girlfriends.

"Hey Dan, did you have a girlfriend before you left for here?"

"No. Did you?"

"No, none of the girls in town caught my eye, but some of them around here
do."

There go my hopes of him ever being interested in me. At least he is a good
friend. We got into the college social life fairly well and pretty much
became known as a pair. I wanted us to be a pair in another way too, but
that wasn't going to happen. I ran into Susan at one of the social events.

As I've said before, Susan is my oldest friend, and the only one who knows
that I'm into guys. We grew up together. Her only problem is that she is
not the most discreet girl in the world. I mean, she'll never knowingly
tell a secret, but she acts as if eavesdropping doesn't exist. That makes
her a bit of a challenge sometimes. She moved into St. Johns (a girl's
college) this semester too.

Susan came running over. "Dan! Where have you been? I haven't seen you
since the holidays!" she shrieked, while half strangling me in a hug (see
what I mean?). I eventually managed to disentangle myself from her and
reply "It's great to see you too Susan. I've been really busy with uni
work."

"I know what you mean; they don't give you a break."

"Tim" I said to Tim, who had backed off when Susan arrived, "This is Susan,
an old friend of mine. Susan, this is Tim, our rooms are next door in
college and we do the same classes."

They exchanged greetings and then Susan pulled me away. "See you in a few
Tim" I managed to call out. He smirked back at me.

Susan dragged me away to a quiet corner. We sat down and she just looked at
me. "Well" she said, after I hadn't said anything.

"Well what?"

"Oh, come on. Isn't it obvious what I'm asking you?"

"No" I replied, completely confused.

"Are you two boyfriends?"

"No, what made you think that?"

She gave me a "do you think I'm an idiot" look.

"Let me see, maybe there's the fact he's incredibly cute, didn't have a
girl attached to him, you were with him, and it's obvious that you have the
hots for him."

"Obvious?"

"Come on, you've got it badly. Don't worry it's only obvious to me, not to
him. You should find out if he's into girls or not"

"I have, he doesn't have a girlfriend yet. He lives a day's drive away from
town."

"Well, you never know. I've been your `girlfriend' once or twice."

"Yeah, but he's actually out looking for one."

"I have this feeling about him, I don't know why, but I think you two will
end up together"

She went off with her friends eventually, and I wandered back to Tim, who
was dancing with some girl, whose name turned out to be Ann. She seemed
pretty nice. At about midnight Tim & I headed home. We both came into my
room and had a chat about the party. We both found it fairly good, but some
of the people were way drunk. We both showered while chatting. The showers
are in separate cubicles, but they are next to each other. We both headed
to bed after that. I lay awake for a bit, thinking about Tim.

I knew that Susan was right, that I had a bad crush on him. Was it a crush
though? I've had other crushes, but never this bad. I've never felt my
heart soar whenever anyone smiles, or wanted him to be happy, even if it's
at the expense of my own happiness. It was then I knew I was in love.
