Chapter 11

Book 2

Part 5

Nick

Nick stood in the gym watching a couple of wrestling matches. He noticed a
couple of students watching him, whispering, and then looking around him;
but then directly at him.

"Kent! Front and centre" he yelled at one of the students watching him.

"Yeah Coach Stone?" he asked. "Am I amusing you Kent?" Nick asked.
"Coach?" he responded. "Well, you two seem to find me standing here
engaging enough to keep watching me, so come on son, what gives?" Nick
asked

"Coach...It's nothing, honest..." Kent replied, none too convincing.
"Kent, do you want me to bench your ass?" Nick responded... "Coach, there
is a rumour going around school... well, I heard something...and, well, it
sort of freaks me out some" Kent responded. "Explain" Nick
replied. "Coach, a rumour is going around school that you molested some
students" Kent responded. "You have to be kidding me" Nick replied.
"Sorry coach, but we are all a little concerned is all" Kent added.

"Kent, before you make any sort of rash judgement, have you or your
teammates seen or been victim of my so called molesting?" Nick spat out.
"No coach...but" Kent stuttered. "But what?" Nick asked,

and silence. No response from Kent just a blank stare.

Nick stood, stunned at what he had just heard. The words child molester
being bandied about like it was nothing; but his reputation was at stake.
As he said yesterday, mud sticks. His dad had stirred up a shit storm, and
he was at the eye of it.

"Okay Kent, thanks for letting me know. Go get ready for your match" Nick
replied. "Oh, and Kent, for the record, its bullshit! So spread that fact
not rumour around Okay?" he added.

"Yeah Coach, I know and I will" Kent said before jogging back to his
friends. And resuming there conversation.

Leo

Leo sat in his office a bit sore from the previous night's activities. He
sat, going over the internet, searching for what would be his and Nick's
family home.

As he searched, his cell phone rang.

"Leo Bo-Trent" he responded.

"Hello Dr Bo-Trent, it's nice to hear your voice" Cody replied.

"What can I do for you Cody" Leo asked. "Nothing, Leo, just thought I
would see how you were doing is all" He replied. "I'm a bit busy Cody" Leo
replied, not really wanting to extend the conversation and wanting to know
how he had his office number. "I am in rehab" he added. "I am just
calling to apologise, Leo" he said, with some emotion. "For what" I
asked. "For taking our relationship for granted and for being a total
fuck-up" he added. And Leo could detect something bothering Cody but let it
go. "Thank you, thank you for that" Leo responded, with some feeling.

"Cody" Leo said, at the non-conversation taking place.

"Cody" he repeated.

"Leo I don't know how to tell you this" Cody started. "I fucked up, I am
in rehab, the Betty Ford, and they recommended that I contact all my past
sexual partners and advise them to be on the safe side and get tested" he
informed him, with emotion in his words, sobbing as he spoke.

"Why? Why would I need to get tested, Cody?" Leo yelled back at him. "Leo
I am sorry. I have been diagnosed as HIV positive... so you need to be
checked out" Cody replied obviously crying.

"Cody you have to be fucking kidding me, tell me you are joking...please
Cody!" he pleaded. "Sorry Leo I truly am sorry" Cody replied. And Leo
slammed the phone down, not wanting to continue the conversation. He made
love to Nick last night, no protection used. He was concerned that he had
infected his lover, his future husband, his life. His body began to shake,
he broke down, inconsolable.

Nick sat in his office after practice; Coach Watson came in and sat in
front of him. "Well, that bull shit has been sorted" Coach Watson said as
he sat. "Sorry Coach?" Nick asked. "The three students recanted their
accusations. The good reverend had put ideas into their heads and it made
sense to them, so they went along to appease the good reverend" Coach
Watson replied. "Oh, that. Good" Nick responded. With a none emotional
response.

"Nick...something eating at you?" Coach Watson asked. "Fucking rumours
have started" Nick replied. "Oh that, just ignore it. It will pass" Coach
responded. "Mud sticks" Nick responded. He stood up and walked to the
window. "Coach, I want to tell the students about me. Most know, anyway,
but they need to hear it from me" Nick informed him. "Nick that is not
necessary; but it's your decision. I won't stop you" Coach Watson replied.
He stood up and placed his hand on Nick's shoulder.

"You are a good coach Nick, remember that, okay?" the coach added before
leaving the office.

Nick sat down as his cell rang.

"Hey Leo, what's up?" he asked.

"Can you come to my office. I need to talk to you. It's important Nick,
okay?" Leo said and then hung up the phone.

"Leo? Leo?" responded Nick, but the line was dead.

Nick stopped what he was doing and left his office, and headed over to
Leo's office. He entered his room and immediately noticed his blood shot,
swollen eyes, rubbed raw from crying. "Fuck Leo, what's happened?" asked
Nick.

"Nick, I am so sorry, but I cannot marry you. I am sorry, but I can't" Leo
sobbed out, and Nicks heart sank. He also began to cry. "Leo please,
don't do this to me. I love you" Nick sobbed out. "I love you, too,
that's why I can't marry you" he replied.

"Leo, you are not making any sense" Nick responded. "I might be very ill
Nick, and I don't want to burden you with this. I love you too much for
that" Leo said, with his heart breaking. "I just hope to god I have not
hurt you" Leo added.

"Talk to me Leo, tell me what has happened since you left this morning"
demanded a tearful Nick; so Leo explained the conversation he had with Cody
to him, in full.

"Is he for fucking real?" yelled Nick. "Okay, let's look at this
logically. How long have you and Cody been apart?" Nick asked, seething at
the thought that his lover could be dying, as well as infecting him.

"8 months. We separated 8 months ago" Leo responded. "When was he
diagnosed?" Nick asked. "He's in the Betty Ford Clinic. They tested him
there, I think" Leo replied. "So, he's just been tested. Leo, he could
have contracted this after you split. Shit Leo, don't panic until there is
something to panic about. Look, we have to get blood tests before we get
married anyway, we will do it now. We will go into LA and get tested" Nick
responded, with a bit more optimism than Leo was feeling.

They left the campus almost immediately, heading for the medical centre he
knew and trusted. The clinic his dad would not receive any information
from. They arrived some forty minutes later and pulled into the parking
lot.

Nick looked over at Leo who looked beaten. He looked like a prisoner on
death row, with minutes to live. "Your dad will love this; divine
retribution, he'll call it" Leo said softly. "Fuck dad!" Nick yelled out,
pulling Leo to him. "Now you listen to me Leo, I will be there for as long
as I breathe; so get off your sorry ass and face this like the strong,
powerful man you are" yelled Nick, with no sentiment; just love and
devotion for the man he loves, the man that was in obvious emotional pain.

They both walked into the medical centre and approached the receptionist.
"Nick ,it's good to see you" she responded. "And you, Maria. How's
Carlos?" Nick asked. "Better, thanks. How can I help you?" she asked.

"Is Doctor Mendez available? I need a word, in private" Nick asked, and
she picked up her desk phone and rang his extension. She explained that
Nick was here with someone and needed to talk.

"Take a seat guys. He won't be too much longer" Maria replied, and they
took a seat. The waiting room was quiet. An old man and a pregnant girl
were the only patients waiting. The clinic catered for all sorts, and Dr
Mendez was one of seven Doctors practicing here. They had sat for about
ten minutes when a middle aged man in a white coat came out of a side
office.

"Nick, you look well" he said. "As do you, Emilio" and they exchanged a few
pleasantries. "Okay. Do you want to follow me and we can talk in private"
the Doctor responded, and they followed him.

"Okay guys, what is the problem?"

"Emilio, this is Dr Leo Bo-Trent" Nick introduced. "Oh, `The' Leo?" he
asked. "Yes, Emilio" Nick replied. "Nice to finally meet you, Leo" the
Doctor replied. "I was on staff at UCLA when Nick became a coach" the
Doctor informed Leo.

And, over the next twenty or so minutes they explained all that had
happened that day; the call from Cody, and Leo's reaction to it.

"Well Leo, you reaction is normal. We will take a sample of your blood
and see what if anything is there. You said you and this Cody split over
eight months ago, correct?" he asked, and Leo nodded in agreement. "Okay,
just so you know, if you have contracted HIV it's no longer the death
sentence it used to be. We can control it with medication" the Doctor
tried hard to reassure Leo.

"How long will the test take?" asked Nick.

"We will take a quick test that will take about 30 minutes, and a
comprehensive test for anything else; and that will take around a week.
But, to be totally honest guys, the first test is usually a good indicator"
replied the Doctor.

He took a sample and asked them to wait outside, and he would call them
back in. He also took a sample of Nick's blood to satisfy the authorities
for the wedding license. They sat for what seemed like hours; but was no
more than thirty five minutes, tops.

They said nothing. Leo stared at the floor and Nick stared out of the
frosted glass of the clinics window. Then the receptionist spoke. "Nick,
you can go back in now" and he looked at Leo, who was panicking and
shaking. His life could be decided within the next five minutes and it
scared the shit out of him.  "Together okay?" said Nick and he stood up;
gripped Nick's hand, and walked into Dr Mendez's office.

"Take a seat guys; I won't prolong this any longer. Leo, your test came
back negative for HIV as did yours, Nick. No abnormalities in either
sample, and I expect the second test to be a similar result" said Doctor
Mendez. Both Nick and Leo began to cry, but tears of relief, not sadness.
They held each other tightly.

"So, we getting married then?" Nick asked, kissing Leo's forehead. "If you
will still have me after this" Leo responded. "Always, babe" Nick replied.
"Take me home please" Leo whispered.

"Emilio, thank you; thank you very much" said Nick, shaking his hand as
they left his office. "My pleasure. I expect an invite, by the way" he
added. "Consider it done" Leo replied, and they left the clinic and headed
back home.

"You okay Leo? It's been a shit day" Nick asked. "Yeah it has. At least
I know you are able to handle a crisis and I found out I suck" added Leo.
"Bullshit! You thought you had infected me. You are a mortal being and
you responded like one; don't beat yourself up for being human, Leo"
replied Nick.

"I think I found us a house" Leo said, changing the subject and the mood
somewhat. "Subtle" responded Nick with a smile.

"I am going to Live Nick. I am taking every day seriously, and taking us
seriously from now on. It's me and you, all the way" replied Leo. "Leo,
nothing has changed from this morning. Your health was brought into
question from a former partner of yours, and you checked out; so just be
you. That's all I ask; be you, the one I fell in love with...twice" Nick
responded with a smile.

"I love you Nick"

To be continued...
