Chapter 12

Book 2

Part 6

"I love you so much Leo, do not ever doubt that" replied Nick.

They headed straight home. Leo still a bit overwhelmed from the day. Nick
also in a contemplative mode, regarding the conversations he had today with
the Coach and with Kent.

They walked in and sat down on the sofa. An apparent sigh from Leo. "You
okay, Leo?" asked Nick, his hand on Leo's knee. "Yeah, just thought I
screwed us over" Leo responded. "Why?" asked Nick. "Nick, if Cody had
infected me, I might have given us a death sentence" Leo explained.

"Be positive babe; always think better thoughts and face problems head on.
You have always done that, so why change?" Nick replied. "Nick, for me
yeah, I would do that; but if I had been responsible for you, I don't know
how I would cope with that" Leo responded. "Change of subject: you are
fine, I am fine, we look forward to the future. You said you found us a
house" Nick said, changing the dour subject matter.

Leo opened his messenger bag and removed his laptop computer. He fired it
up and clicked on the site. He found the house he was looking at earlier.

"Wow, that looks great" Nick responded.

"Yeah, it has four bedrooms; so, a nursery , a guest room, and perhaps a
playroom for when the baby gets older" replied Leo. "You thought of
everything" said Nick. "We have to approach a few agencies and get some
advice" replied Leo. "Leo, I am sure we will find a way to get what we
want" added Nick.

"But for now I need to explain something that happened today" Nick started.
"Coach got the accusations sorted; that, for one, will piss my dad off no
end" He continued. "But, rumours have begun to circulate; no doubt
orchestrated by my Father" Nick tried to explain. "One of my student
wrestlers told me that there are stories going around that I had molested
students" He informed a stunned and shocked looking Leo.

"Fuck, Nick...why aren't you pissed?" Leo asked. "What's the point in
getting mad; there is nothing I can do about the stories. The Coach, at
tomorrow's roll call, will inform the student body that the accusations are
false" Nick replied.

"But Leo, we are going to get this shit most of the time; especially where
my dad is concerned. Leo, I love you and I am not ashamed of it" Nick
continued. "After Coach Watson has informed the student body of the false
allegation, I will inform them that I am gay and it does not affect my
coaching abilities" added Nick, looking at Leo, who was looking a little
apprehensive.

"It's not as simple as you make it sound, Nick, you know that, right?" Leo
replied with a sceptical tone.

"I just hope I have not overestimated the credit I give the students. I
mean, I haven't heard any homophobic comments aimed at me or any of the
students. I am not saying there are no prejudices, Leo. I am not that wet
behind the ears" Nick replied.

"I'll stand by you, you know that" Leo responded.

"It's just that your father will pounce on this, and you know it. He will
spout off to anyone who will listen" Leo added. "So what, hide? Just stay
in the shadows?" asked Nick. "No, I don't mean that; it's just that you
will be treated differently.  The students will act differently toward you;
even Danny will get shit for this" Leo added, sounding more concerned the
more he thought about it.

"Look, I will talk to Danny before I do anything, okay? Does that sound
okay with you?" Nick responded, sounding somewhat pissed. "Just think he
ought to know, you know? Pre-warned is pre-armed, and all that" Leo
replied, and Nick nodded in agreement.

"Why can't life just be simple, you know? Just for once" bemoaned Nick.

Leo walked over and wrapped Nick in his arms, kissing the top of his head.
"Where would the fun in that be, huh?" Leo responded, with a giggle in his
voice.

Nick called Danny.

"Hey Bro, I need to tell you some things" he started.

"I am going to inform the students that I am gay!" Nick said.

"Wow, you sure, Bro?" replied Danny.

"Yeah, it's time Dan. I need to do this; if I don't, it makes dad right"
Nick added.

"What do you mean?" Danny asked

"That I am ashamed of whom I am; and Bro, I am far from ashamed. Leo makes
me, you know what I mean?" Nick replied, with a little emotion.

"I have your back Nick...you know that, right?" Dan replied.

"Just thought I should tell you, coz, well...you might get some shit from
this is all" replied Nick.

"Bro, I am big enough to take care of myself, and besides" he stopped.

"Besides, what?" Nick asked.

"Oh, just besides" He replied.

"Okay, I love you, Bro" Nick responded

"Yeah, back at you" Danny replied, and the call ended.

The following day, before practice began in the gym, Coach Watson addressed
the athletics department; along with field sports and the remainder of the
school's sports students and faculty. The Dean was also in attendance.

"Okay, listen up" Coach Watson started.

"QUIET!" he yelled, and the bleachers fell silent.

"As you are aware, certain allegations regarding assistant coach Stone have
surfaced, citing he abused his position here at UCLA in the form of
molestation of students. This has been investigated, and has been proven
false" Coach Watson went on. Nick watched the crowd, and watched Kent, no
discernible change in his stance.

"The School believes the students involved had been coerced into making
these allegations, and this will also be investigated" he concluded.

"Coach Stone would like to talk to you now, so stay seated". Coach Watson
stood down.

"Thank you, Coach. Okay, here goes. I have thought long and hard about
what I am going to say today. I have taken advice, and in the end, I am
just going to be honest with you. I have coached most of you for three
years, and you have never had any cause to question my integrity...ever"
Nick went on, his heart now pounding.

"Some of you are aware of my private life, most of you are not. But I will
be open about this. I will not discuss anything about my private life that
is not School related. But, since my Father is intent on causing as much
trouble for me as he possibly can...I see no other avenue" Nick went on.
"Guys , Ladies... I am Nick Stone...and I am gay!" he said, and waited for
a response.

"Yeah, coach... We sort of already knew that...so what's the announcement?"
asked Kent. Nick looked shell-shocked at what Kent had just stated.

"What do you mean, you already know?" he asked.

"Coach, I have known for a few months; but some here have known for
like...forever" Kent replied. Leo sat in the stands with other faculty
members, and was in awe of what was being said. "Coach, pardon my
French...but nobody gives a rat's ass about who you sleep with. You are an
awesome coach, end of story" Replied Jimmy Lucas, a third year wrestler.

"Coach... we thought you were going to announce something major" added
Kent.

"JUST TELL THEM NICK" yelled Danny.

"Nick looked over at Leo, and he smiled. The faculty and most of the
students apparently knew about the past friendship he and Leo shared, and
still share.

"Well, I am touched. I gave you all much credit for the maturity I thought
you all possessed; and, well, you have all proven me right" Nick went on,
with emotion choking him up somewhat.

"Okay Kent, you want an announcement...okay, here goes... I have only ever
loved one person in my life...and because I allowed life to get in the
way...I lost that love for a while... I cannot believe I am telling this to
a hundred plus students...but, anyway...I was given a second chance at the
first chance I walked away from..." He continued, looking at Leo, while he
declared his feelings to the student body.

"I have loved Leo Bo-Trent since my first year of college...right here,
actually" he went on. "He came back and we fell in love all over again..."
he continued...

"Your announcement Kent" he looked at Kent, smiling.

"Leo has agreed to Marry me" Responded Nick...Silence...

Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!

And one after the other, the gym floor erupted in wolf whistles and cheers;
and Coach Watson and the Dean shook Nick's hand. The students applauded.
Leo walked over and wrapped his arms around Nick. "That went well!" Leo
laughed out.

Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!

"I Love you, mister" Nick replied.

"Silence...SILENCE..."

The whole floor turned and looked as the Reverend Stone and a couple of
members of the faculty march in and grabbed the microphone from Nick. Nick
stepped back and gave his estranged Father the floor.

"This is an outrage. Dean, I cannot believe you condone this immoral
behaviour to occur on School grounds. I will seek your resignation, Sir"
The Reverend Stone yelled. "Reverend stone, tell me what rules have been
broken. Inform me of what sanctions I have over stepped. Inform me why
you are even here" The Dean demanded.

"Moral corruption of the student body; subjecting them to the immoral
behaviour of two fag " he trailed off, "these two sinners" he yelled,
pointing at his son and Leo.

"You are a bigot, sir. You are a bully" Coach Watson responded, standing
face to face with the Reverend. "And, as for you two; you listen to his
diatribe of poison and you spread rumours about people. Oh yes, I heard
who started the little Chinese whispers" Coach Watson said, looking at the
Geography teacher, as well as the English studies Professor. "And I know
who was responsible for the idea" he continued, his face red with anger;
looking at Reverend Stone.

"Sir! I do not know what you are trying to imply; but you better be
careful. Slander is what you will be sued for. Keep up this slanderous
assault, and I will see you in court" Reverend Stone informed him.

"Dad, I will see you in court; because we know it was you. You as much
said so in the meeting. The boys confirmed that you hinted at my
involvement; and you put the idea in their heads" replied Nick.

"I would very much prefer if you did not address me directly. You have no
involvement in my affairs" Reverend Stone spat out. The students watched
on intently at this real life drama in front of them.

"You have no involvement in my family. So, if you accuse me one more time,
and I have witnesses to the fact that you are slandering my good name, I
will sue" he added.

"Dad, does that include me also?" asked Danny, as he walked and stood next
to his brother and Leo; Coach Watson's hand on his shoulder. "You are
embarrassing yourself Dad" Danny added.

"May the Lord forgive you; honour thy father, sayeth the Lord" Reverend
Stone said as though he was standing in his pulpit. "Dad, you forced Nick
out of our lives, and you were wrong to do so. He is my Brother, and I
love him. You are just plain wrong, Dad" replied Danny.

"You have killed my family, Saten. You have taken the things I love, you
have attacked the fabric of my soul, but you shall not win". Reverend
Stone bemoaned the betrayal he has witnessed from both of his sons; well,
in his mind anyway.

"Show's over. No practice today, people. Please head off now" Coach
Watson yelled into the microphone.

The students filed out of the gym, mumbling to themselves and to others.
They kept looking over to the Reverend. He was now sitting in the
bleachers, his head in his hands. He was silently praying for guidance.
Danny walked over and sat beside his father; but before he could speak, his
father stood up and walked away from him.

"Dad...DAD" Danny yelled, as his father and the 2 members of faculty
followed him out of the gym.

"Sorry Bro" Nick said, pulling Danny into a brotherly hug. "He will come
around" Danny replied. "Don't count on it, Dan. You know how stubborn he
is" Nick replied.

"I can hope though, can't I" responded Danny.

"Yeah, sometimes miracles happen; even in our dysfunctional family" Nick
responded, squeezing Dan's shoulder.

"You best stay with me tonight; let him gain some perspective and calm
down" added Nick, with Leo smiling at the interaction between siblings.

"Thanks, Nick. That seems like a good idea". Danny was smiling; but
somewhat forced.
