RIP TIDE
Chapter Five: Coffee break
  (From Hayden's point of view)

I turned around the corner, still keeping up my pace. Running in the
morning was just not my thing, so I was truing to ease the torture by
running in the evening. Who ever said that running is fun was not born in
the same mind set as me. I consider running boring as hell. The only way
I could make it more pleasurable if I had my iPod with me, but I
deliberately decided not to carry it. I listen to my music loud, and in
the open traffic than doesn't seem like smart idea. This was my second
time out running this week, and I tried to make my path different coming
and going from home to make stuff interesting, but it was still boring as
hell.

This was only second week of fall semester, so workload was not
overbearing. I still had some homework to do, and than later I was going
out with Courtney and Scott to see a movie. I had no idea what we were
going to see, but I was looking to go out and have some fun. The three of
us ended up meeting almost always after my Physics class in the
cafeteria. It turned to be a good idea: I needed some socializing, and
both Courtney and Scott were perfect zero-pressure companions. I think
that Courtney was eyeing me, but I wasn't sure; it was Scott who
suggested that all three of us go out tonight. I knew that if he had
plans with Courtney, he wouldn't even bother to call me.

I reached my house just before 4 pm. I still had plenty of time to
shower and finish my homework. It was just some research for Physiology
class, and I was done with it by 6, leaving me plenty of time for me to
get ready. As I was shuffling try my closet, I decided to go casual as
usual. I was never of "get super-dressed-to-go-out" types. Jeans and nice
polo was enough. Simple and effective. Besides, this was NOT a date or
anything. As I stepped outside, I realized that fall is definitively
here; it was considerably colder than two hours ago when I left for my
run wearing only shorts and t-shirt. I grabbed my jacket and left.

Courtney and Scott were already in front of the theatre when I arrived.
Courtney seemed pleased to see me and immediately placed her hand under
mine. It was a friendly gesture, and I didn't mind. Obviously she was an
open person, and I knew that those people are used to casual
interactions. Soon we were chatting like usual, laughing and punting each
other. Scott was determined to tell Courtney every dirty detail about the
time when he caught me sleeping with giant magnum-size bottle of Heineken
- he got Courtney crying of delight. I wasn't miffed at all; Scott knew
only stuff that I wanted him to know, but he was a master of
storytelling, and soon he had us both doubling over with laughter.
"So...Hayden...you like your girls large and green?" she asked after she
managed to catch her breath.
" Yeah, and ice cold too" I retorted, sending another wave of laughter
between them two. We decided to see "Pirates of the Caribbean". I have
seen the movie already, but since Courtney haven't we decided to go.
Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow was definitively something to go for a second
viewing. Courtney sat in between Scott and me, and we shared the popcorn
bag that she bought. We ended up having a great time; Courtney was
beaming with happiness of a child when the movie ended. I had to laugh at
her antics as she tried to impersonate pirates' way of talking. You know,
"Aarrr" speech and all. She couldn't pull it at all, making both Scott
and me cringe and laugh at the same time.
I escorted Courtney to her car. We walked in comfortable silence all the
way to the theatre's parking lot where she parked her green Civic. As she
unlocked the car, she said simply: "I had good time tonight, Hayden...can
we do this again sometimes? Just two of us?"
There was no pressure or pleading eyes, she just stated something that
was on her mind. I grow to like this girl.
"Sure - I had a great time with you too. Just give me a call so we can
organize something" I replied. She smiled and got into her car.

I walked back to my car, and started to drive back home, when it dawned
on me: Whoa, did she just asked me out, in a very nonchalant way? Hm, it
seemed she did. I continued to drive, tumbling thoughts in my head. I
knew one thing: I am not ready to date anybody yet. I wanted to stay
relationship- free for a while. I knew why: I was too exhausted from my
previous one, and I wanted some time off. Besides, I just got my life
back the way I wanted, so no need to disturb that sea. She was a very
nice and non-complicated person, but I rather stay alone for now. With
that in my mind, I decided that I should give Scott a call, since he
might be able to give more answers. I tried, but he wasn't answering. Oh
well, I call him sometime tomorrow than.

(Matt's point of view)
Damn, damn, damn! This Biology crap is just not going well. I was
looking at my first test results. I tanked, pretty badly. Worse of it
all, this was just a beginning and prof. McCullough was already doing
more of that stuff that was foreign to me. I was sitting in front of the
Cuban restaurant, drinking my coffee. This small restaurant had become my
favorite spot; they had an awesome mocha latte, plus it was in walking
distance from my dorm. And at this time of the day, it was on the sunny
side of the street, so it was warm even in the evenings.
But now I had all my Biology papers out, and my coffee did not tasted
that good. I hate not being able to comprehend what is my task. I sighed.
I guess I will have to go to a biology tutor, probably for the first time
in my life. I wasn't even sure that they had one on campus. I guess I can
always get together with someone from my class and study. Trouble is that
I haven't met anybody yet: there were two other students from my lab
group, but we never exchanged numbers or emails. I sighed again.
"You are not in Kansas, anymore Toto." I said to myself bitterly. Now it
is crunch time. I opened my book and tried to re-read some of the lecture
material, but no avail. This whole Krebs cycle was one big mumbo-jumbo to
me. ATP, ADP, and AMP - it was all too confusing. Realizing that I hit
the wall with the lecture material, I leaned back in my chair and I
closed my eyes, trying to relax.

"Double espresso, please" I overheard someone say. The restaurant door
was open, and there were not many people inside, so I was able to hear
that clearly. I do not know what made me to open my eyes and to look
inside. At first, I couldn't see very well inside; there was a glare in
the window, plus inside was darker than out here where I was. Seconds
later, I saw a movement and figure coming to the door, holding a paper
cup in his hand. As he walked to the door, I realized that figure was
familiar. More so, it was the walk that I recognized.

It was that guy that had my cell phone! Hayden, that is his name. He
reached the door, and stood there for a second, folding his change into
his pocket in one fluid motion. His eyes stayed in the shadow of the
doorway, but rest of his body was illuminated with sunset. God, what a
body! His jeans were fitting him like they were made for his hips, and
striped Abercrombie polo was accenting his broad shoulders, while it was
stretched over his pecs in most revealing way. The collar of the polo was
nonchalantly unbuttoned, revealing muscular neck. He looked so sexy, so
damn hot just standing there.

I decided to look away too late...he noticed me looking at him.
Ow shit, he noticed me. He must saw me staring at him like retard, still
half-turned in my seat. God, this is awkward. With coffee in his hand he
moved towards my table. I was still half-turned toward him when he
reached the table. I tried to get back to normal sitting position as
naturally as I could, but my whole body was acting like it was made of
parts that are not coordinated at all. Panic started to creep into me.

"Hey Matt, whatsup" he said, without too much emotions in his voice. It
was more of formal greeting than an actual question. Yet, it still
demanded response. At least I could do that - act civilized. As in:
civilized - not staring at other people.
"Hi, Hayden" I replied meekly. I got so nervous that I started to fidget
with lid on my coffee cup.
" What are you studying?"
"Bio..Biology" I managed to look up to him. He was looking at me, not at
my books. The sunset was giving half of his face unbelievable tone of
red, setting his right eye on fire, while the left one remained dark. I
couldn't tear my gaze from him.
"Cool", he replied, still not breaking eye contact with me. I felt as my
head catching on fire. I inhaled sharply, as almost as I forgot to
breathe and managed to sputter addition to my previous answer.
"Yeah...but it sucks...I don't get it at all". Luckily, I diverted my
nervousness towards biology, as a perfect victim.
" Where are you with your lectures?" he asked; this time there was more
tone in his voice; I could tell he was genuinely interested.
"Um...er...Krebs cycle and stuff..." I had to actually look at my notes
to remind myself what was that I was reading not even two minutes ago.
"Yeah, that can be confusing. Who you have as teacher? McCullough?" he
asked.
"Um, yeah...her" I stumbled back. I was exchanging glances in between his
face and my notes, almost fidgeting in my seat. Every time I would look
at my books, some magical force would drive me to look up and meet his
steady gaze. And than I would look at him until I would feel that I am
loosing ability to speak, so the game would have to repeat itself.
" Yeah, she is not good about explaining stuff" he continued, and than
leaned over the table to study my notes. I froze in place. His left
forearm was inches away from my face, as he was using it to lean on the
table to get a closer look at my papers. I simply couldn't move away,
like normal person would do in situation like that. No, I remained in my
semi-inclined position, staring at his forearm. If this is the closest I
cold get to him, I do not want to miss it. I found myself lustfully
gawking at muscles under his smooth, tanned skin, the veins running
alongside of his forearm. And he smelled soooo good...I couldn't
recognize the scent: it was faint, not overbearing but definitively
there. I felt stirring in my pants. It was like the proximity of this
stud was charging the air around him with sexual energy. I wanted to
touch him so badly! It only lasted a few seconds when he pulled himself
away.

" Yeah, this is complicated. Krebs is tough to learn, but when you do,
other stuff will be easier for you to understand" he said.
"That is the problem...we are already going into photosynthesis and I
cannot even get this in my head" I shook my head in desperation. "I will
have to get a tutor for this - I must be the dumbest kid in class!" I
mumbled.
"Well...this IS hard to get...and McCullough is not the best of them all
to explain this stuff..." He stopped in the middle of his sentence and
then went quiet. I looked up to him, slightly confused. He wasn't even
looking at me anymore; his gaze was somewhere else, like he was searching
for something across the street. Then he rubbed his forehead and
continued:
"Listen, if you want, you can stop by my place tomorrow night and I can
try to explain this to you. Ok?"
Huh?
I just sat there, looking at him in disbelief. I opened my mouth to say
something, but it took me couple attempts to actually say something.
"How...why...you really want to help me out?
He looked at me with such compassion that it was obvious that he meant
every word he said. His lips broke in a sly smile:
"Of course, man...I'll be glad to".
I was still in mild shock. He wants to help ME! This is so unreal!
Despite my attempts to look and act cool, I couldn't contain my grin
anymore.
"Ow, that is so awesome Hayden! Thank you so much! This is like, so hard
for me to get into my head, you wouldn't even believe! Ow, that is going
to be so great!" I was just rumbling on and on, barely containing my
excitement. He was just standing there, waiting for me to finish my
little frenzy. I was grinning from ear to ear when he leaned over again.
"Here's my address...if you have Mapquest its gonna be easy for you to
find me" He jotted down his address on the napkin. "And just in case,
here's my cell. I'll be home after 4 pm. Ok?" He said, smiling at me.

I froze again, looking at his smiling face. God, he is beautiful. His
eyes were so inviting, so full of energy. I managed to nod my head, not
stopping to stare at him. And than he stood up, and with one last smile,
he turned around and walked to the street. I was just staring after him,
watching, as he looked left and right before he lightly ran across the
street to parked white Golf GTI. So that is what he is driving, I
thought.
"Now I know what to stalk", I said to myself, smiling.

I was still smiling when it hit me. Tomorrow, I'll go to his house. I had
to repeat it to myself, because it sounded so unbelievable.

Tomorrow, I will go to his house. Hayden's house. This stud, this sex on
two legs had invited me to his place. To study, I reminded myself. Ow
shit, that is right. Just to study. I will have to have clear head. I
leaned back in my chair again, with nervousness settling in my stomach.
"Matt, you better contain yourself." I said to myself.
"You should consider yourself lucky to have someone volunteer to help you
out with this crap. Be cool."

Well, that was easier said than done - all I could think about for the
rest of the evening was smiling Hayden's face...his warm, dark eyes...and
that moment when we were so close. Any homework was completely out of
question - I would find myself gazing into the wall, thinking about him.
Of course, the moment I got back into my room I pulled my laptop to get
Mapquest directions to his house. He was right - it was easy, even for
someone that didn't know the area. He was living outside of the town,
just a short trip down the highway.

" I better not get a speeding ticket driving over there" I smiled to
myself.
