			       Chapter Three

The cathedral was illuminated by brilliant pink light as the
darkness receeded; the sun peeking over the horizon. A man walked down a
cobblestone street with a heavy bag over his shoulder. The smells of
freshly made churros and coffee flirted with his nostrils, and his stomach
grumbled. He clutched at it, and climbed the stone steps to his
destination. Yawning, he rapped on the hard oak surface with
urgency. Clicking of heels against hardwood floors were heard, and a
woman's whisper came.

"Salvatore is that you?"

"Yes it's me." Salvatore sighed.

The door swung open and a woman stood with a business like
expression. She was a beautiful woman with a heart-shaped face and large
brown eyes. Her dark brown hair was tied in a bun, and her lips full and
natural. She wore a white ruffled blouse and a black leather skirt with
heels to match. The smell of food wafted out and Salvatore felt his stomach
grumble again. The woman rolled her eyes and gently smacked his head. She
waved her hands in presentation and Salvatore entered the house.

"I'd figured you would be hungry, so I took the initiative."

Salvatore smiled at the spread "You're the one who wanted me to report at
five in the morning." He bit into a churro.

"I haven't seen you in a month. How are you holding up?"

Salvatore took a swig of coffee "It comes with the job Mercedes. I am doing
fine so far."

"Did you bring the report?" Mercedes gave him another churro.

"Of course. Here." Salvatore reached into his bag and withdrew a manila
folder. It was hefty and filled with paper, he slid it across the table.

Mercedes caught it with her ruby nails "Thorough as always. Start your
summary, Agent Della Grazia."

"I have confirmed that our suspect deals both internationally and
domestically, shipping as far as Miami. I have reports that he has also
commited crimes such as arson, homicide, and human trafficking."

"Who's this?" Mercedes whipped out a photo and flashed it. She looked at it
with motherly eyes.

"His name is Rafael. No family." Salvatore said sadly.

"Poor thing, he looks very sweet." Mercedes put the photo aside.

"He is." Salvatore muttered.

"Does he deal?"

"Not by choice."

"Another charge on Garza's belt." Mercedes made a note "Good work. I will
be around, we won't isolate you again. Return to your duty and I will see
you soon."

"Ma'am."

It was that dream again.... Rafael felt his head sear with pain as
it progressed. He was in the closet; fear going down his spine. The room
swirled and became distorted as he heard voices coming from a distance. He
heard gunfire, and backed against the closet wall. Cracks began forming at
his small childlike feet, pieces chipping off and turning into dust. The
floor gave way and he fell into darkness. Gasping for air, his body lurched
upward, and he pressed his hand to his mouth. He panted and cold sweat
poured down his forehead.

"Rafael are you alright?" Luis sat up and gently pressed Rafael's head to
his chest.

"I'm fine sir." Luis' chest was warm.

"You're shaking." Rafael felt Luis' lips press against his hair.

Rafael looked down and realized that Luis had only boxers on. He
blushed and and slithered away from Luis' tight embrace. Flustered, he
quickly ran to the shower and locked the bathroom door. A knock came at the
door , and the knob twisted.

"Rafael? Are you alright?" Luis' voice was concerned.

"I'm fine s-sir."

"Open the door please." Luis pleaded.

Rafael unlocked the door, and it quickly opened. Luis pulled him into an
embrace "What is wrong?"

"My head hurts..."

Luis's eyes were pained "Do your morning things and rest."

"But sir... I promised the father."

"Are you sure you can go?"

The pain suddenly ceased as if it were never there "I'm fine now sir."

"Are you sure? I can take you to the doctor."

"It's alright. Thank you though Mr. Navarro."

"Be careful." Luis shut the door behind him.

Rafael showered and did his morning rituals, dressing himself in a
white dress shirt and black slacks. He bid Luis farewell and proceeded to
walk briskly to the cathedral. Nostalgic aromas filled the narrow street as
he gazed about at numerous stalls and displays. Vendors greeted him and
waved him over, a smile of invitation on their faces. Much to their
disappointment, he paid them little mind and headed straight for the
wrought iron gates. Sunday service had just ended as he walked in, the
father was packing his things and talking with a patron. The woman turned
and gave Rafael a smile as if she knew him, she walked past and exited. The
father smiled and shut the cathedral doors, a loud thud echoed throughout
the building.

"What brings you here today Rafael?" Heliodoro locked the door.

"I wanted to talk with you father. " Rafael smiled shyly.

"Go up to my room, I will be there in a minute." Heliodoro flashed a smile.

Rafael headed up the stairs and entered the study, the room smelled
of flowers and the sunlight illuminated the room. Several moments later the
father entered, he held a basket of pastries and a note in his hand. He
laid the basket on the table and offered Rafael a roll.

"What is troubling you Rafael?"

Rafael took the roll and bit into it, the taste of butter and cheese
prominent "I had a reoccuring dream father."

"I'm not a psychologist ." Heliodoro smiled.

"I know but... I see things that I never seen before father." Rafael
finished the roll.

"What do you mean?" Heliodoro's face grew serious, his hazel eyes
concerned.

"It is like a memory.. but it is not mine. My head hurts when I wake up but
then it goes away." Rafael clasped his hands.

"Have you told anyone else?" Heliodoro placed his hand on Rafael's
shoulders.

"No father." Rafael felt the father's hand glide up and down his back
soothingly.

"You will be fine." Heliodoro embraced the smaller body.

Rafael felt his heart beat steadily faster, and jumping from his
chest. He leaned his head against the father's shoulder, his flesh and the
father's separated only by fabric.

"Are you alright Rafael?' Rafael jolted back from his day dream.

"I'm fine father." He said flustered.

"You're blushing again. You do that so often Rafael." Heliodoro flashed a
smile.

"I-I'm sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?"

"Nothing father...."

"Have you prayed yet Rafael? It is Sunday after all."

"No father."

"Alright then, how about I read you a blessing?" Heliodoro went over to the
shelf.

Rafael kneeled and withdrew his rosary. The father opened the book
and Rafael's face was a mere foot from his crotch. Innocently, he took a
slight glance at the bulge encased in slacks. The father seemed not to
notice and cleared his throat.

Making the sign of the cross he began reading.

"Let us ask God to bless Rafael and to have mercy on us all.

Heavenly Father, you loves us all. Have mercy on us , and listen to our
prayer as we ask you to help Rafael. Bless him , for he is Your beloved
child.

Father we ask this grace. In the name of Jesus our Lord.

Amen."

"Amen" Rafael repeated. "Thank you father."

"You're welcome." Heliodoro lifted Rafael to his feet.

"Heliodoro?" Rafael said almost in a whisper.

Heliodoro turned with surprise "Yes Rafael?"

"I have -"

The phone cut him off and Heliodoro picked it up in a matter of
moments. Rafael watched him speak with concern to the person on the other
side. With a click the phone hit the receiver and the father donned his
jacket.

"I am visiting a nursery home, they want blessings. Do you want to come?"

"Yes father." Rafael said crest fallen.

__________

They arrived at a rather curious establishment that resembled more
of a inn if anything. The side windows that looked to the street were
stained glass and the structure consisted of three floors. As they
approached the front door, Rafael noticed that it had been converted into
automatic doors. The father went first and as Rafael entered he was taken
aback. Inside was a mixture of medical and household objects, wheelchairs
sat against the wall and the dining room was converted into a waiting
room. A receptionist sitting at an oak desk greeted them, it was the woman
from earlier and she smiled at him. They approched the desk and the woman's
smile grew larger.

"Thank you for coming father." The woman said.

"It is no trouble, the pleasure is all mine. May I ask what your name was?"
Heliodoro smiled gently.

"My name is Soledad, I just started." Soledad tapped her ruby fingernails.

"Congrats, come Rafael." Heliodoro placed his arm around Rafael's shoulder
and led the way.

A nurse smiled at the sight of the father and bowed her head. "Hello
Heliodoro, giving blessings today?"

"Yes, I decided to bring my assistant Rafael also."

"Wonderful. Take your time ." The nurse walked away.

For the next several hours they chatted with the elderly and the
father gave blessings. When they finished it was well past 4 in the
afternoon. The father smiled at a job well done, exhausted they headed back
for the cathedral. The plaza was vibrant and filled with patrons as the
work day ended, vendors smiled with happiness at the sheer amount of money
coming in. They entered the father's room and the father turned to face
him.

"You were trying to tell me something earlier Rafael, what was it?"

"Is it alright if I stay here tonight?"

"Of course you can." Heliodoro smiled broadly "Go grab your things and come
back."

"I will be right back." Rafael sprinted out of the room.

He ran down the street with a lightning fast pace, people watched
him zoom by and stared in curiosity. Luis was not inside of the apartment
and Rafael called out. His call was only met with silence, he entered his
bedroom and packed an overnight bag with excitement. The front door opened
and shut as he packed and a voice came from his doorway.

"Where are you going Rafael?"

Rafael turned and saw Luis at the door. "I am.... speniding the night at
the cathedral."

"The cathedral?"

"Yes sir."

"You cannot just go places, you are supposed to ask permission." Luis
scolded.

"I'm sorry sir."

Luis chuckled "I am teasing, go have fun."

"Thank you sir."

Rafael embraced Luis before he sprinted out the door with bag in hand.

Luis shut the front door , as he walked to the bedroom he tripped
on his suitcase. It proved to be a nuisance rather than help. He dragged
the suitcase over to the closet and opened it, as he pushed it in something
caught his eye. An object gave off a sheen and he bent to pick it up. It
was a metal box with a latch that snapped shut, its surface was a little
rusted but otherwise well taken care of. Curiosity got the best of him and
he gently opened the latch, the lid swung open and Luis gazed at the
objects inside. He dumped the contents out and gazed at the pile : about
30,000 pesos in a pile, two photos, a journal and a birth certificate. Luis
picked up the birth certificate first, it was faded and the ink was
smeared. He could only make out the name "Mateo- Vassallo- Bezzina." and he
placed it gently in the box.

The first photo he picked up was of a couple, torn at the edges
from countless glances and yellowed slightly form age. A man and a woman
stood in front of a boat, smiling brightly and holding hands. The man was
dressed in traditional muslim attire and the woman with a head scarf and
long white dress. Luis flipped to the back and found it blank, with a sigh
he cast it back into the box. The second photo intrigued him most, he
smiled at it as he looked at Rafael's father. The face was captured in
black and white, a smile forever etched. He was more than handsome with his
stunning smile and messy black hair, eyes crinkled from the smile. The
resemblance was quite obvious and Luis gazed at for the longest time.

__

That night Rafael laid on the father's bed , they laid face to face
and Rafael's head was against the father's chest. His body was warm like
the summer breeze, radiating love and affection. It was not like Garza's
frigid soul and he felt at ease pressed against the father. Strong arms
held him, pulling him into a warm embrace. Exhausted from the days events,
Rafael finally allowed his body to sleep.
