				Chapter 28

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A couple days after Christmas, we had a big snowfall overnight. Tom and
Ethan spent the night with us, and we had a very enjoyable time
together. The next morning, the snow had stopped and it looked beautiful
outside.

As we were all sitting at the breakfast table together, with Buddy
sleeping at our feet, Simon said "So what're we doing today?"

"I feel like going skiing!" I said.

The others were all enthusiastic, as they all liked to ski too. There
was a small ski resort nearby that we all liked, so we decided to go.

"Can I drive?" Simon asked, excitedly.

"I suppose," I said.

Tom and Ethan smiled benevolently, as Simon beamed with anticipation.

After breakfast, Simon and Ethan took Buddy out, and he dutifully peed
and pooped. They put him in his crate when they came back in, and we all
got ready to go and took off for the slopes.

We drove together in my car, with Simon at the wheel, and me next to him,
giving him pointers, and advice about his driving, as we rode along. I
was happy, that after only a few short weeks of driving lessons, Simon
handled the car very well.

"Then, can I take my road test soon?" he asked, after I complimented him
at one point on his driving.

Chuckling, I said, "No, you know I want you to take Driver's Ed next
semester at school, before you take your road test!"

Simon grumbled a little, but when I turned around, Tom and Ethan were
smiling in the back seat.

 * * *

We all piled out when we got to the ski area. We dragged our equipment
with us to the lodge. Simon didn't have any equipment to carry, so he
carried Tom's and my boots. Simon had had an old pair of skis, but the
boots didn't fit him anymore, so he'd left them at his mother and
step-father's. For today, I figured we could rent equipment for him.
Afterward, we could watch for a sale and buy him a new pair of skis and
boots.

We checked the prices for lift tickets, and discussed it a few minutes.
In the end, we decided that we'd probably come often enough to make it
worthwhile to buy season pass lift tickets, so Tom and I each charged two
tickets. I bought Simon's of course, and Tom insisted on buying
Ethan's. Ethan protested a while, but finally acquiesced, after Tom told
him a few times that he really wanted to buy his ticket for him.

"Thanks! You get more like a father to me all the time!" Ethan said
finally, giving Tom a hug.

Tom smiled broadly, and his eyes glistened.

We went to the equipment rental shop then and got Simon outfitted.

Finally, we walked across the parking lot, put on our skis and headed for
the chairlifts.

 * * *

"Let's do a diamond right away!" Simon gushed, happily.

I chuckled and said, "I think I'll do an intermediate trail for my first
run. I haven't skied in a while."

"Sounds like a plan to me," Tom said.

"Well, will you do some diamonds with us after?" Simon asked, hopefully.

"Certainly!" I said. "I just need to get used to being on skis again.
You guys can go on without us if you want."

Ethan looked at us, then back at Simon and said, "Let's just do a couple
blues with the old men, then we can whip their asses racing down the
diamonds!"

"HEY!" Tom complained. "I expect you two will be eating OUR snow!"

We all laughed.

Since Ethan seemed to want to do a run or two on an intermediate slope to
warm up too, Simon finally agreed. We got in the line for the chairlift
up the intermediate slope then.

We had a good first run down the hill. Tom and I each slid and fell
once, but, soon were used to being on skis again, and let Simon and Ethan
drag us to the lift up the black diamond. It wasn't too bad. I actually
made it without falling at all. Tom fell twice though, and Ethan fell
once. I thought Simon was going to make it without falling, but near the
bottom of the hill, he flew over a small bump and sailed up into the
air. His feet flew out from under him, and he landed pretty hard on his
ass. I thought for sure he would be broken. But before I could get
worried, he started laughing uproariously at himself, as he sat in a heap
of snow on the edge of the trail. We all laughed along with him then.

We had a wonderful time skiing together all day. The weather was
pristine. The air was cold and crisp. It was bright and sunny. There
was no wind. The snow conditions were perfect!

We took a short lunch break at mid day and had grilled hot dogs on the
outdoor deck at the lodge, along with a side of baked beans and some
chips. Tom and I each had a beer, and the guys had sodas. Afterward we
went in and peed, then took off again, and skiied the rest of the day
away. On and off throughout the afternoon, we shared a lot of laughs
over all the farting we did from the beans.

It was starting to get dark around 4:30, when we caught the last chair up
the mountain for the day. We skiied down, arriving at the base lodge,
just as the sun dropped completely behind the mountain.

Simon turned in his equipment, and the rest of us stowed our's in the
car, then we went back to the lodge for a while and sat by the fire. Tom
and I had a couple more beers, and the boys each had more soda. We got a
couple baskets of french fries and munched on them as well.

Eventually, warmed again and rested a little, we decided to head for
home. Simon wanted to drive of course, so I let him.

 * * *

As we neared home, we were all getting hungry. Ethan suggested we stop
at Mario's for pizza. Simon glanced at me. I suggested we just go back
to the apartment and order in, but Ethan said he was starving and this
would be faster.

I was about to suggest we stop off elsewhere, but Simon piped up and
said, "it's OK, we can go to Mario's."

I looked at him. He just kept driving. I glanced back at Tom, who gave
me a knowing look. Ethan was oblivious to our glances.

Simon put on the directional as we approached Mario's and turned into the
lot. I noticed he was looking around at the cars parked there, as he
nosed my car into a space up against the restaurant's wall. Sure enough,
in the back of the lot sat a familiar looking, old VW Jetta. I looked at
Simon and he gave me a look indicating he'd seen it too.

"It's fine. Jerry's alright," he whispered to me as we got out of the
car and walked toward the front door.

Ethan was walking up ahead of us, with Tom.

"Hey Simon!" Ethan called back to us, as he stood reading a sign on the
door.

"What?" Simon asked.

"You said you wanted a job. They have an opening for a part time
waiter!" Ethan said.

"Really?" Simon asked.

"Yeah. Why don't you ask when we get inside," Ethan replied.

"I don't know..." Simon trailed off.

We walked in the door, and Mario the owner was waiting to seat
customers.

"My friend Simon here is interested in your part time waiter's position,"
Ethan said, smiling, before anyone could say anything.

"Really?" Mario asked, smiling. "Tell me about yourself Simon."

Simon was a little taken aback. I was about to say that he wasn't really
interested in the job, but before I could, Simon began telling Mario
about himself.

Tom and I exchanged glances.

As I looked around the restaurant, my eyes came to rest on Jerry, the
waiter who had once been one of Simon's "Johns". He hadn't seen us yet.
I nudged Tom and indicated Jerry to him. Simon and Mario were still
talking, as the two of us watched Jerry work.

"He's kinda cute I guess," Ethan whispered to us, as he followed our
looks, to Jerry. "Cute ass for sure!"

"That's not why I'm looking at him," I said, dryly.

Ethan gave me a funny look.

Just then, I heard Simon saying "OK, I'll think about it and let you know
after we eat."

Mario said, "That'll be fine. Now follow me to your table please. And
Simon, pay attention! You might be working here very soon."

Mario smiled at us and headed toward an empty table in the corner, with
Simon and Ethan following closely behind him.

"I'd rather Simon not work here," I whispered to Tom, as we followed the
boys, who were following Mario to our table.

"I got that impression," Tom replied.

As we sat down, I noticed that Mario went over to Jerry and spoke quietly
to him for a minute. Jerry turned and looked our way then. At first he
looked surprised, but momentarily he headed in our direction with a
hesitant smile on his face.

"Hi! Great to see you both again," Jerry said looking at Simon and I.

He looked at Tom and Ethan then and said, "And nice to meet you gentlemen
as well."

Before we could reply, he looked at Simon, and grinning, said "I hear
you've applied for the waiter's job! That's so cool! I put in a good
word for you. I guess it wasn't necessary though. Mario likes you and
wants to hire you. We'll be working together if you take the job!
That'd be so much fun!"

"He'll think about it," I interjected, before Simon could reply.

Ethan gave me a funny look again.

Jerry caught the seriousness in my tone, and took our order then and
left.

Once Jerry was gone, Simon looked at me and said, "What'd you have to say
that for?"

"You know why!" I replied, looking him in the eye.

"But Mario wants to give me the job! I'll have a job! Besides, you know
it's not a problem anymore!" Simon said.

"I don't care. I don't like it! I don't think you should work here!" I
said.

"Why don't you want Simon working here?" Ethan asked, looking at me.

I didn't answer, but looked at him a moment, as I tried to think of the
best way to reply.

Simon didn't wait to hear what I was going to say.

He looked at Ethan and said quietly, "Greg's upset about me working here
because Jerry, the waiter, is one of my old 'customers'!"

Ethan looked at Simon a moment, then said, "Well, if that's true, then
you won't be taking the job."

I was a little surprised at finality of Ethan's statement. Apparently
Simon was too. He didn't like Ethan telling him he couldn't do something
one bit.

He looked at Ethan and said combatatively, "You can't tell me what job I
can take, or not take."

Ethan looked a little surprised. He looked at Simon a moment, then said,
"I didn't mean it that way. What I meant was -"

Mario appeared then with our drinks.

"Since we're short-handed, I'm helping out by delivering drinks to the
tables," Mario said. "I don't suppose you've decided yet Simon?"

Simon grinned at Mario and said, "When can I start?"

Ethan's mouth dropped open, Tom's eyes widened, and I fixed Simon with a
glare, as Mario said, "That's wonderful! How about tomorrow afternoon?"

"I'll be here!" Simon said, giving both Ethan and I a defiant look.

"Abondanza!" Mario exclaimed. "Come in at 1:00."

"OK," Simon said, smiling, and accepting Mario's proffered handshake.

Mario bustled off then.

Simon looked at us, and before anyone could say anything, he said, "It'll
be just fine! Jerry'll be fine. Besides, I can take care of myself. So
stop worrying about it."

"The least you could've done was hear us out," I said.

"It'll be fine Greg! You'll see." Simon said.

"I hope so," I said, looking at him.

Ethan didn't say a word. He just sat looking away from us with a
smoldering look in his watery eyes...
