Evan Lonzo awoke for his first day of senior year. Having just turned 18 a
couple of weeks prior, he lay in bed thinking about everything that he had
going for him. Great student, star athlete, president of the Young
Christian organization, active in family and religious life and a hot
girlfriend to boot. He removed the sheets and the California sun bathed his
lightly tanned torso in its morning glow. He went into his private and
pristine bathroom to make himself presentable. After his shower he wrapped
a towel around his waist and admired himself in the mirror, he admired his
well-defined pecs and biceps; gently carved after years of athleticism. He
brushed his teeth and walked into his room to get dressed, putting on a
baby blue polo with dark acid wash blue jeans and white and blue Nikes. He
styled his dirty blonde hair with an unkempt look that was admired by many,
and headed down to see his family.

He came down the stairs as his mother called him into the kitchen.

"Hey mom, Dad." He said giving his mother a kiss on the cheek. He turned
his attention to his younger brother sitting at the table eating
waffles. "Hey squirt." and rubbed his head.

"What can I get you dear?" His mother asked pouring his father a cup of
coffee.

"Nah, I can get it. You have a seat mom." Evan said walking to the cupboard
to grab a glass for some orange juice that was set out on the table.

"So champ, you ready for baseball season." His father asked putting down
the newspaper he was reading.

"You know it, Dad." He said before taking a sip of his juice and taking a
seat at the table next to his mom.

"This is your year Evan; all the recruiters will be here watching
everything you do. You need to show them what they'd be missing if they
passed you by but with the help of the Good Lord you will excellent"

His father said finally getting up from the table.

"I know Dad, 1001% during my games; you've only preached that since day
one." He said. He finished the last of the toast he had eaten and he stood
up to grab his messenger bag. He was just about to head out to his car when
his father called him back.

"Whoa there sport! Did you forget about our morning prayer?" His father
asked raising his eye brow.

"Whoops sorry, I guess I did." Evan said dropping his bag and walking over
to his family in a circle waiting for his entry.

Evan pulled into the student parking lot of Frederick N. Freeman High
School and put his red Honda Accord in park and got out, locking the car
behind him. He walked up the walkway to the front of the building and he
could feel the eyes of everyone he passed on him, the men wanted to be him
and the girls wanted to be with him. Unfortunately for them there was only
one girl for him, Christine Berkley, the hottest girl any high school guy
has laid eyes on. He walked into the main office and picked up his schedule
and then headed to his homeroom. It didn't take him long to find the room
he was looking, he walked and was greeted by his buddies. Through all the
salutations and jokes about the summer he saw him, a kid he had never seen
before sitting by the window his head in a book. His light brown skin
almost seemed like it was glistening within the sun light.

"So Ev. How was your summer bro?" Riley asked. Riley had been Evan's friend
since they were younger and considered themselves brothers.

"Good, I worked and checked out some colleges and universities. Just plain
horsed around. How was Camp Morning Star?" Evan said taking a seat.

"It was pretty cool, but I'm glad to be back." Riley said running his
fingers through his hair. Just then the bell rang and everyone took their
seats as the teacher entered.

"Good morning and welcome back students. Before we talk about your final
year at FNF High, I would like to introduce a new student, Maximillian
would you come up here?" The boy looked up and nervously stood up and head
to the front of the room. Evan got a better look at him, his hair was curly
and a little long, and seemed a little shorter than Evan.

"Umm, hi. My name is Maximillian Chase. I just moved here from Chicago."
His was shy and his voice reflected it, he put his head down and hurried
back to his seat.

The teacher thanked him and began the homeroom session, it was all pretty
standard and boring explaining the requirements for their senior portfolio
and that every homeroom session will be used to work towards completing
it. The rest of the morning was pretty standard. Evan had 3 more classes
until lunch and Maximillian was in one of them, he was just as quiet as he
was in the homeroom period.

Lunch came around and Evan bolted to the cafeteria got his lunch and then
sat at the jock table where he always sat with his friends. Christine was
already there waiting for him, when she saw him coming she walked to him
and planted a light kiss on his lips.

"How are you baby?" She asked happily. They walked over to the table where
everyone else was sitting.

They both sat down and she cuddles up to him.

"You guys are so cute together. If you guys don't get homecoming King and
Queen, I'd absolutely die."

One of the girls said. Evan didn't really know her but knew she was on the
cheer squad with Christine.

The period moved quickly and before they knew it the bell rang signifying
ten minutes until the next period. Christine and Evan threw away their
trashed and walked away together.

"I missed you so much; a summer in Colorado is nothing without you." She
said kissing him. "So I was thinking maybe Friday night we could get
together for a movie, maybe a little bit of cuddling, and then--"

"Christy, you know how I feel about the whole sex thing. It's just how I've
been raised. Until I know that you and I are the right ones for each
other."

He said stepping away from her.

"I'm sorry baby, but can we at least go out Friday night?" She asked, she
flashed her green eyes and perfect smile and it was all the convincing she
needed to do.

"Okay. I'll see you later." They kissed one more time and headed their
separate ways.

After the first day the week wore on and soon the weekend was turning into
the second week of school.

Evan seemed to see Maximillian everywhere he went and has caught his eyes
more than once. One day Evan was walking to his locker and paid no
attention to the surroundings. He heard the locker clang and books hit the
floor and he saw Maximillian sitting on the floor.

"Jerks." Maximillian mumbled under his breath. The jocks swiveled back
around heading towards Maximillian who was just collecting his books from
off the ground and knocked them out of his hands.

"What did you say punk?" One of the bullies asked, pushing him against the
locker. Maximillian made a mistake of locking eyes with the bully and the
lust he was feeling at the moment despite the situation.

"Well, well, well. I think we got ourselves a little fag here boys." The
guys began to chuckle and the bully turned his attention back to
Maximillian. "Does this turn you on there, new kid? You like being pinned
down." Maximillian said nothing, but simply smiled. He lifted his foot
slowly and kicked his tormentor swiftly in the crotch, dropping him to
floor. It took a second for the other bullies to realize what was going on
as they begin to pound on him. Maximillian fights back for a while until a
teacher breaks up the fight. By now a crowd was gathered around them, Max
saw Evan briefly and then he had disappeared.

"Watch your shit fag! If you think this is the end you are wrong. See you
after school" The bully shouted as he was hauled off to the main
office. Another teacher allowed Max to collect his books and then escort
him to the nurse?s office.

Later that day, the bell had rung out to dismiss the students from their
last class on the Wednesday afternoon. Max and Evan shared that class as
well as two others. Max gathered his things and headed outside. Evan
watched him from a short distance and lost track of him through a crowd of
students.

Evan felt like he was in a haze, his stomach ached and his gut told him
something was wrong. He heard the sounds of yelling and fighting and
followed the sounds to the side of the building out of earshot and sight
from teachers. Sure enough Max was there cornered by bullies on all
sides. They all began lunge at him at once, kicking, punching, everywhere
they could reach. Evan dropped his stuff and lunged at the group, yelling
and pushing his way to Max.

"You guys! Quit it! Now!" Evan said yelling at them. The immediately
stopped and looked at him, Max was still covering himself.

"Why are you sticking up for this fag?" The leader of the bullies
questioned.

"I'm not. If you get caught fighting again Darren, your ass will be kicked
off the team if not expelled. If not, I will beat your ass myself. You will
not drag the name of my teams through your shit." Evan said poised and
ready to fight.

"Is that a threat or a promise?" Darren asked.

"Do you wanna find out?" Evan asked sternly his eyes burned with a fiery
protection over Max. Darren stepped back not wanting to test Evan
fury. When the bullies where out of sight Evan turned towards Max who
looked at him gratefully. "Are you okay?"

"What do you think? I just got the shit beat out of me by 4 jocks that are
like, twice my size." Evan extended a hand to Max who took it, with a
slight twinge of pain. He picked up his belongings.

"Hey, I know you. You're in my Senior Homeroom, English Lit, and Calculus
right?" Max just nodded his head. "I'm Evan Lonzo."

"I'm Maximillian Chase, but I prefer Max." Max said as he checked his
watch. "Shit I missed my bus.

Fuck!"

"If you need a ride, I can give you a lift." Evan offered. He wasn't sure
why he did but he rationalized it as, because it was his duty as a faithful
Christian to help those in need.

"Which way are you going? I don't want to inconvenience you." Max said as
they began walking.

"I live over by Dander Estates." Evan told him.

"Oh cool so do I." Max said. For the first time, Max smiled at Evan. Evan
felt his heart skip a beat but dismissed it.

"So. What brings you to sunny California?" Evan asked as they began the
journey across the campus to the student parking lot.

"Well, my mother got offered a promotion so she decided to take it and we
moved here. How about you? Did you move here?" Max asked rubbing his aching
wrist. Evan laughed.

"No I was born and raised here. Hopefully I don't die here though." Evan
said. They walked in silence for a better portion of the journey until they
came to the parking lot. There were just a few cars left most of them
belonged to after school faculty.

"So," Max said softly. "Which one is yours?" Evan was more than happy to
share. He pulled out his keys and hit the unlock button, the chirp directed
Max's attention to the red Honda Accord. A slight gasp left his lips and
Evan smiled.

"Are you gonna sit there gawking all day or are you going to get in." Evan
asked, the both gave a chuckle and got into the vehicle.

The ride was a short and Max simply directed Evan where to go.

"I know where you live." You don't live far from where I am. I live a
couple of streets over." Evan said turning onto Max's block. He pulled up
to Max's house and Max opened the car door and shut it behind him and began
to walk up the driveway to his house, when Evan rolled down the
window. "Hey Max, maybe soon if you want we can hang out sometime. Sound
cool?"

"Umm yea, that sounds great." Max said flashing his smile again.

"Cool, well I guess I'll see you later then." Evan said.

"Yea, see you later." Max said. Evan smiled and drove off.
