Chapter 2

Evan settled down in his pajama pants in his living room, the scent of warm
popcorn wafted over the living room. He covered himself with a blanket and
hit play on the remote. About 5 minutes in he recieved a text message from
Evan.

"Hey Max, it's Evan what are you up to?" Evan asked.

"Nothing much, why?" He sent back and returned to his movie. A few moments
later Max got a response.

"I was wondering if you'd like to come down to the beach with a few of my
friends." Evan said.

"I don't feel like getting beat up tonight, but thanks for the offer." Max
responded back, and returned back to his movie, but before he could fall
back into the story he received another text.

"I don't hang out with those guys, at all. Besides no one is gonna mess
with you while I'm around." Max just couldn't say no. He pictured Evan's
smile reassuring him.

"Lol. Okay, I'll be ready in ten minutes." Max quickly sent the text and
went to his bedroom and changed into some board shorts and flip flops. When
he came down the stairs it was perfect timing, the doorbell had rang. "I'll
be there in a sec!" Max called to the door. As he walked closer her saw the
tall framed silhouette in the frosted glass.

"Hi Evan. I just gotta find my keys." He said letting Evan inside the
foyer.

"Wow this house is bigger on the inside. But it's still nice." Evan said
flashing a toothy smile. Max laughed to himself.

"It's the foyer, don't let it fool you we just have a spare room is all,
it's not that big." Max said leading him into the living room. Max moved
around some stuff on the table in search of his keys and knocked the DVD
case of the movie he was watching on the floor.

"Casablanca?" Evan asked picking up the case of the floor.

"Ah yea, I love classic movies, this one is my favorite." Max said walking
into the kitchen. After a couple of minutes he called from the kitchen, and
came back into the room.

"You know, I love classic movies. Legally Blonde is one of my favorites
though." Evan said trying to hide even a shred of playfulness.

"Please tell me you're joking." Max said completely serious.

"Of course I am, I may be blonde but I'm not stupid." They both laughed at
this joke and headed out to the car. The beach wasn't far from Max's
community it was about 10 minutes. About 5 minutes in Evan broke the
silence, "So have you been out and about the town?"

"Umm, not really. I don't go out very often. Besides I don't have any
friends really." Max said breaking his view with the moon reflecting off of
the water's surface to look over to Evan.

"Hopefully that changes, and you can consider me a friend." Evan said
giving Max a warm smile. Max looked out of the window and spotted the fire
on the beach. Evan saw it too. "Almost there." The finally reached the
landing and made their way down to the shore. Christy spotted Evan and
came over to them, followed by other people. "Hey everyone this is
Maximillian"

"Just Max, please." Max said interrupting.

"Well Max, I am Christy." She said extending her hand to him, who shook
it. "I keep this one in line and sometimes vice versa." She gestured to
Evan who had one arm around her and lead her away from the group.

"Sup, Max. I'm Riley. I'm sorry those jerks from the team messed with
you. It isn't gonna happen again."

"Thanks Riley." Max said warmly, they walked back to the fire a few more
introducing themselves and exchanging pleasantries. The fire danced in the
wind flicking about wildly, calming down ever so lightly until more wood
was added.

"So would you like a drink?" Riley asked standing by the cooler ready to
grab himself a beer? "If you've got Coke, I don't drink." Max said hoping
this wouldn't impact the relationship of the new people he met. Riley
instead just smiled and tossed him a coke. They huddled around the fire and
began chatting it up. Christy and Evan joined in shortly after. Evan and
Max kept catching each other eyes until Riley turned up the music and
pulled out a volleyball ball.

"Anyone up for a game?" Riley asked stripping off his shirt revealing his
toned upper body and the other guys followed suit including Evan and so did
the women, playing in shorts and bikini tops. They began to play and Max
watched quietly. After a while he got up and walked towards the shore. He
took off his flip-flops and placed his feet in the path on the oncoming
tide that would sweep in and kiss his feet delicately and then disappear
just as quickly with a gentle swoosh. He looked into the sky and admired
the night, the stars seemed to dance against the black background. He
closed his eyes listening to sounds and feelings that surrounded him, the
ocean breeze, the sound of the waves. For that moment he was so in tune
with the world he didn't notice Evan come up next to him.

"Hey. You alright?" Evan asked grasping Max's shoulder gently. Max felt the
slightest tingle of electricity shoot through his body when he felt Evan's
touch.

"Yea I'm fine. Just taking in the sight, you don't see stuff like this in
Chicago." Max said. Evan sighed and laid back into the sand.

"How did you end up in California?" Evan said digging his fingers
into the sand.

"My parents separated." Max said looking up into the sky.

"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that." Evan said propping himself up on his
elbows.

"Don't be, my dad was sort of a prick. I never really got along
with him, you know? I miss him but I just can't be sure he feels the same
way." Max said, relishing in the soft kiss of the warm ocean water on his
feet. "So what's your family life?"

"Well both my parents are in the picture, and I'm pretty much their
star child. I'm the eldest of everything. I make them proud with all the
stuff I've been doing but sometimes I feel like, I'm not living my own
life. You know what I mean?" Evan asked softly, he really began to think
out loud, baring his soul to this almost perfect stranger.

"I do. You feel like everyone has such high expectations for you,
that you have to work hard to make others happy at the expense of your own
happiness." Max mentioned matter-of-factly.

"Yea, it's funny. I'm never this open, not even with Christy."
Evan said. The two continued to talk, they laughed and shared stories and
their friendship began to form rapidly. They talked for a couple of hours,
to them feeling like minutes. So deep in conversation neither of them heard
Christy approaching.

"Hey, boys." She said sitting in the sand next to Evan and resting
her head on his bare chest.

"Hey, babe." Evan responded softly kissing her forehead.

"Everyone is getting ready to head home, it's getting late." She
said stroking his hair.

"Really? What time is it?" Evan asked looking at her and then
Max. Max pulled out his phone and showed him the time. "Oh wow, it is
late." Evan said looking up at Max. The three got up from the shore and
walked towards to the rest of the group.

"Leanne is spending the night at my house tonight so I am going
back with her, okay?" Christy said picking up her beach bag and throwing it
over her shoulder. Riley finished throwing stuff into the back of his jeep
before giving out good-byes.

"Evan bro, I will see you on Monday, and Max it was nice meeting
you I expect to see you at lunch with is on Monday?" He said giving a
slight wink to Max.

"Yea, I'll take you up on that thanks." Max replied with a gracious
smile. Riley finished saying goodbye and three other people Shauna, Dave,
and Lindsey piled into Riley's packed jeep and headed off. Christy looked
at Evan and gave him a passionate kiss.

"Until we meet again my prince." She said putting distance between
them. "Bye Max." She said as she began to walk away. Something told Max
that she wasn't not going to enjoy having him around.

When she was out of sight, they began to walk towards Evan's Honda. They
got in and after the car was turned on and put into gear, drove off. About
5 minutes in Max began to fiddle with the stereo.

"What are you doing?" Evan asked smiling.

"Just trying to find something to listen to." Max replied, he began
shuffling through a pile of CD's and came across one that was scribbled on
with Sharpie. "What's this one?" He asked.

"Oh, you wouldn't like it. Not many people do." Evan said trying
his hardest to keep his concentration on the road. Max popped the CD in and
hit play. The first track began to play. Paradise by Coldplay.

	"Dude really?" Max asked seriously.

"What?" Evan could feel a wave of embarrassment rushing over his
face.

"I freaking love Coldplay. I have Mylo Xyloto!" Max pretty much
exclaimed.

"No way! I finally found a fan of Coldplay. I thought I was the
only one." Evan said with just as much enthusiasm.

"Dude, I went to go see them live and it was awesome!" Max said
aloud. The two began singing along with the tracks as they made their way
home. A couple minutes later they pulled up to Max's house and his parents
car was in the driveway and no lights in the house were on. Evan cut the
engine and lights so not to disturb the neighbors or Max's parents.

"So did you have fun tonight?" Evan asked taking his hand off the
clutch.

"Yea I did, beats the hell out of watching Casablanca for like the
90th time." Max said jokingly.

"Good movie but I know, and there is still a lot of this town left
to see and maybe sometime I'll take you around and show you the sights."
Evan asked almost nervously. A wide smiled appeared on Max's face.

"I think that'd be awesome." Max said. Their eyes locked and the
entire mood in the car changed, there was an electricity in the air that
neither of them have felt before. Their faces moved closer together and
closer until Evan quickly jerked his head away, Max just looked in the
other direction.

"So I'll uh, I'll see you." Evan said starting his vehicle.

"Yep. See you around." Neither of them made eye contact. Max got
out of the car and before he got halfway up the walkway Evan had peeled out
in a hurry.
