Blind Leading The Blind    Chapter 19

Shane woke up early and noticed that it was raining outside and it looked
like it was going to ne a miserable day. He got up and walked around to
the other side of the bed where Kolby was having another restless nights
sleep. He stood there and listened as Kolby was muttering in his sleep.
He heard Kolby say " Please Lyle help me through this I am really scared.
Then he rolled over on his other side. Then he muttered some thing else
and then rolled back over again. Shane reached out and put his hand on
Kolby's face and it seemed to quiet him down at least for several
minutes. Shane was standing there and was beginning to wonder if this was
a good idea. Kolby had been blind all his life and now he { Shane } was
about to change all that he knew. He was taking him from his world that
was dark and secure to a world that he { Kolby } was certainly going to
be completely strange to him. Shane started thinking was he doing this
for himself or was this to take Kolby from his dark world and bring him
into another world that was going to be totally alien to him. Shane
started doubting his reasons for this major change in his lovers life and
he himself started to get scared as to how this would effect Kolby
physically and mentally. Shane removed his hand from Kolby's face turned
and started to head to the bathroom.

Lyle quietly called him over.

Shane walked slowly over to the cot that Lyle was laying on and knelt
down.

Lyle looked at Shane and told him that whatever happened he was sure that
it would be for the better. It may not be my place to say anything but
for all it is worth, for as little a time that I have known both of you,
I am glad to say that I would hope that if I was in
Kolby's position that I would have someone like you that was willing to
help me get through it.

Shane Looked at Lyle and with tears running down his face said " am I
really doing the right thing, did I make the right decision, I did not
give one moment of thought to how this was going to effect Kolby. I was
so excited with the opportunity that I could give him I never asked him
if he wanted it. I am wondering if I have pushed him into something that
I may be sorry I did later. The other thing is what if after all
this he still can not see. That would mean that I put him trough all the
pain and anguish for nothing. If that does happens I would not be
the least bit surprised if he hated me for it.

Lyle said " Shane I want to tell you something that you may not
understand right now. Just trust me and promise me that you will never
speak of this again. "

Shane looked at Lyle and said " I guess that if you want me to promise
you to keep it a secret then it must be something that is very
important, I will keep your secret till the day I die. I promise. "

Lyle sat up and looked Shane in the eyes and Shane became very relaxed
and looked very confused. Lyle started out by telling Shane that
there are certain things in life that we just do not understand.
Sometimes things happen that cause us a great deal of pain and suffering.
then there are the times that we do things that make us happy and full of
joy. About a year ago I was in that position, I had done something
for someone and it gave me a great deal of joy. I was rewarded for my
deed. I was given some new cloths and a shower and I looked like a
million bucks. That reward turned out to be my undoing. Someone thought
that I had something that I do not have and if cost me my live. I am much
stronger physically and mentally than you think. I could have handled the
situation with Cody a lot different than I did but I was waiting to see
if there was someone close to me that cared enough to intervene. That
person was you. You sometimes hear stories about how people are saved by
what they say are angels. I am here because God has given me a chance to
continue my life and to help others.

Shane looked at him and said " Lyle are still asleep and dreaming ? "

Lyle continued. I know that deep in your heart that there is a love that
you have for a little boy that died just about a year ago, a little boy
that came to the rescue of a beautiful young man that was in a very bad
situation. That little boy helped him and was thrilled to be able to
help someone in need. That little boy was later abused and left at deaths
doorstep. All things being equal that little boy through no fault of his
own was killed in a fit of jealous rage. Lyle stood up and placed his
hand on Shane's shoulder and said " I am that little boy. "

Shane nearly fell over. He stood up and said " it can't  be true. "

Lyle said that you have made a promise that he would keep my secret. I am
going to hold you to that and I am putting my trust in you. With
that Lyle placed his hands on Shane's arm and said I want you to remember
that this conversation never took place.

Shane looked at Lyle and all of a sudden he began to smile and said " now
I understand "

Lyle looked at him and said " now I will show you something that must
remain our little secret. He put him hand to Shane's face and said
you will become a very important part of Kolby's live and what you are
doing now will impact that life for the remainder of his years. I will
however not be her to share it with you or Kolby for very much longer. I
want you to know that the love that I have for both of you will
sustain me forever. He leaned down and kissed Shane on the cheek.

Shane began to cry and said " you can't leave Kolby again it will break
his heart. " You have made such an impression on me as well I don't know
if I would be able to take you leaving either.

Lyle said I know and I have become more than I ever could have because of
you and Kolby. Just for your information and as a favor to me
I would like very much for you to try to become friends and stay friends
with Cody. He is going through some rough times right now and
no one knows how critical that situation is. He is going to need someone
and I believe that you could be that special person that he needs to see
him through.

Shane said " I will do my best to help him. "  he looked into Lyles eyes
and asked can you tell me how long you will be here. "

Lyle looked at him and said " Shane you are a bright spot in my life and
I want you to know that I will miss you and Kolby but you both will
always be in my heart. Tomorrow after the first surgery on Kolby. He is
going to need more help and love to get through all of this. I only
wish that God would have given me more time but it was not meant to be. I
will not tell you when or how but tomorrow I will no longer be here
There will be an accident and I assure that it will be painless for me. I
do know that it will cause a great deal of pain for Kolby. I need you to
be there for him.

Shane said " you know that that will crush him. "

Lyle said " please trust me and know that Kolby will in his dreams know
that I am safe and in a much better place and will always be watching out
for you both. With that said Lyle looked at Shane and said I have one
more thing I want to do for you both. He walked over to the wall
between the windows and placed his hand there on the wall, there was a
bright light and it filled the room, when the light went away there was a
picture of Lyle hanging there. He turned to Shane and said " I believe
that you promised this to Kolby. " It is just my way of saying
thank you for taking care of him. Now I need you to go and get ready for
school because Kolby needs to get up shortly. I am not going to school
today as there are things I need to complete before tomorrow.

Shane walked over to Lyle and looked him in the eyes and said " I am so
proud to have known you, you are one of the most gentle people I have
ever known, I hope that I will be able to live up to half of what you are
now and I will consider my life a hugh success.  With that he
turned and went into the bathroom where he took his shower but spent most
of it crying over what he knew would be the loss of a very special person
in his life.

When he got back into the bedroom he saw Kolby sitting on the side of the
bed and had tears running down his cheeks. He said Shane" is
that you "

Shane responded with a " yes "  He walked over and hugged Kolby and
noticed that Lyle was not in the room. He said to Kolby " What's
wrong? "

Kolby said I was awake most of the night and I felt you put your hand on
my face. When Lyle called you and you went over there I could
not help but overhear what was being said. Kolby broke down and started
to cry. I wanted to be able to stay friends with Lyle and help
Lyle as he once helped me. He asked Shane not to leave Lyle's side all
day tomorrow because then the accident would not happen if it did
then he would be there to protect him.

Shane said Kolby " you and I have been given a very special gift. We were
able to have a second chance to see and love someone that was very
special. It would be a shame if we did not honor his wishes and tried to
prevent him from really going back home. He will always be in
our hearts and I am sure that from time to time he will let us know that
he is thinking of us as well.  We really need to let things take
their natural course and we will be able to live with that. Besides you
heard Lyle say that we need to help Cody with what he is going through It
is like he is asking us to help him out with Cody. We just can't turn him
down.

The boys got dressed and went down to the kitchen and had breakfast.
Headed off to school and they were both very sullen the entire day.
School let out they headed for the car and drove home. When they got
there they went in and headed upstairs and found Lyle sitting on the bed.
Shane said " Kolby Lyle is here. "

Kolby said I want you to come here. Lyle walked over and stood in front
of Kolby. He reched out and took him in a monster hug and said " I
understand and overheard what you said this morning. I hope that I have
the strenght that you have to get through this.

Lyle looked at Kolby touched his face and said " I will give you a
preview of the next few months. With that Kolby stood there with a
shocked look on his face and told Shane I can see. Lyle said I want you
to know that you are very special to me and that I will always be in you
heart and you will always be in mine. My life here is just about over and
I want you to live yours to the fullest. Please don't mourn for me it is
I who should me mourning for I will not see either of you again but you
will have each other. I hope that you both see that and move on quickly
after tomorrow. With that Lyle touched Kolby's face again and everything
went dark again. I will tell you both something that I know
I should not but Kolby you will see again and you will do wonderous
things in your life along side Shane. Lyle said well I need to do a few
things and with that walked out the door.

Shane said  " wait " and ran to the door and found Lyle nowhere to
be found.

The remainder of the dat went by and there was a feeling of both sadness
but also a feeling of joy that both boys had never felt before.
They all ate { including Lyle } the the boys went upstairs and were
spending some quailty time together before tomorrow. They laughed
and joked about all the stupid things that they could think of, and then
aboout 10:00 the mood changed there seemed to be a somber aire taking
over. Lyle asked them to sit and he told them of the events with very
little detail that would take place. The boys would be going to the
doctors for the first treatment. Lyle would not be able to go because he
had something to do that concerned Cody. He told them that
he would be here when they got back. Both Kolby and Shane were  happy
that they would see him when they got home.

They settled down and were all in bed with the idea that the doctors
visit would most likely take a heavy toll on Kobly and that he would
need all the strenght that he could get. Knowing that they were in good
hands with the doctor and most due to the feeling that they knew
that Lyle was there for them.

Lyle sat on the cot and stared at both of them sleeping. He had a
wonderful feeling that was going through him for he knew that together
Shane and Kolby were going to be fine. He was also sad because he had to
leave them behind. He had come to love them very deeply but knew from the
start that he only had a limited time. The night went on and Lyle had one
more stop that he had to make. He walked out the door and was in Cody's
bedroom and he walked up tp the side of the bed. He reached out and
placed his hand on Cody's chest and Cody woke and looked at him.

Cody said  " Lyle have you come back to me. "

Lyle said " no, I want you to become good friends with Shane and Kolby. I
know you have some issues with Shane but what he did he did
because he loved me and did not want to see me get hurt. "   You have a
lot to offer both Kolby and Shane they will need it over the next few
days. Promise me you will try.

Cody Looked funny at Lyle and said " if you want me to do that then I
will. "  What are you trying to say ?

Lyle said " I can not say any more but will hold you to your promise. "
He leaned over and kissed Cody on the cheek and said " I know it has
been hard for you and that you are going through some rough times but
know that you can count on Shane and Kolby to help you through
the comeing times. With having said that Lyle placed him hand on the side
of Cody's face and said " you need to get some rest now " and with that
Cody fell back to sleep and Lyle walked out of Cody's room and was once
again sitting on the cot in the room with Shane and Kolby.
As the time went by Lyle was starting to feel a little sorrow himself. He
looked up and asked for help to make it through the next few hours.
He had to be strong for both Shane and Kolby. He did not want to appear
to be the leasst bit weak in what was going to take place. His
strenght and fortitude was all that he would be able to give them and he
wanted to make sure that it would sustain them through the coming
weeks. The sun started to rising and Lyle got up and straightened himself
out and was really looking sharp.

Shane woke and looked at Lyle and sadly said " You were not able to sleep
last night were you? "  You should have woke me and I could have sat with
you for a while.

Lyle smiled at Shane and said " my dear friend you have done more than
you know please don't be sad.  "  Kolby needs all your strenght
today and will require all your time  and patience for the next few
weeks. Please concentrate on him and let me go for I am perfectly able
to do for myself.

Shane smiled and the went to wake Kolby. He said that he needed to get up
and get ready for the trip to the doctors office. Kolby went into the
bathroom and was taking his shower and went he finished he came into the
bedroom he took off the towel he had wrapped around him

Lyle said smiling " I really wish that I could have spent a life time
with you, You really are a beautiful person.

Kolby started to cry and Lyle ran over and said " Kolby please don't cry
it will not change things and it will make it harder on all of us. Please
let's be happy for the time we have had together and cherish it.

Shane said Kolby its almost time to go. He walked over to Lyle bent down
and kissed him softly on the cheek and said good-bye, I am honored that I
had a chance to know you, and know that I will miss you terribly. He
hugged him and then stood turned and walked over to Kolby.

Lyle walked over to Kolby and took his hand.

Kolby bent down and kissed him softly on the lips and said I have loved
you since the day you found me on the street. I have never until now been
able to tell you. You have become such an important part of my life and
now you have to leave me again. He hugged him and then stood up. Lyle
smiled and said " I have never in my short life ever been more proud to
be able to call someone my friend. You both have made me so proud. You
will both make that world a better place if you  just hang on to the love
that is in your heart. Remember that it is not how much you love that
counts it is how much you are loved. I can safely say that you two are
loved by many now and many more later in life.
I must say my good-byes now. Take care of each other and remember that
God loves us all.

Shane and Kolby walked out the bedroom door and headed down the satirs.
They were sitting in the living room waiting for the driver to arrive
They heard him honk and they stood up and they both yelled " good-bye my
friend. " They opened the door and headed for the car. Shane
looked back at the bedroom window and saw Lyle standing there with a
smile on his face waving good bye. He got into the car and they drove
away.
