Blind Leading The Blind  Chapter 20
 
Lyle stood in the window and watched as Shane and Kolby drove not only
out of sight but out of his human existence. It was only a matter of time
now until Lyle would take his place in heaven once again. The gift of
being able to to come back and see, touch and feel Kolby once more was a
true blessing. He walked slowly away from the window and headed for the
door. He knew his leaving was something that Kolby was not going to take
lightly. The statement of him being here when then retuned from the
doctors was in itself true. The fact that it would be in body only was
purposely left unsaid. Lyle knelt down at the top of the stairs and
started to pray. He was asking for the courage and the will power to be
given to both Shane and Kolby. Suddenly there was a terrible loud noise
behind Lyle. He lost his balance and fell head or heels down the stairs.
He hit his head on the corner of the railing and was just laying there.
 
Shane and Kolby were arriving at the doctors office the driver opened the
door for them and said " I will be back in two hours and pick you
up. They walked into the  doctors office and Shane went up and told the
nurse that they had arrived. She asked them to please be seated and the
doctor would be with them shortly. They had arrived at 10:20 for the
appointment at 10:30. The doctor came out and said good morning and told
Shane that he would be taking Kolby into the treatment room but that he
would have to wait here. 
 
Kolby got up and reached for Shane and hugged him and said " everything
is going to be fine I just know it. " I will be back before you know it.
Then he turned and took the doctor's hand and they disappeared behind the
door.
 
Shane was sitting there and had all kinds of things running through his
mind. He was naturally worried about Kolby. He was also thinking of Lyle.
He was thinking of the first time they met,  when he seemed to be so
scared, it brought a smile to his face. He suddenly felt a strange
feeling. He stood up and turned around and in that moment he knew that
Lyle was gone. He sank to the floor and started to cry. He tried
his best to compose himself, he promised Lyle that he would be strong for
Kolby, but it hurt knowing he was gone. He was not sure if Kolby had felt
anything, but he was hoping that he had not. The time seemed to crawl by
as Shane sat and waited.
 
Finally the doctor came out and said " that everything had gone as
planned, Kolby would be coming around in about half an hour and then they
would be able to leave. The nurse called Shane over to the window and
told him that they need to take care of the charge for today
and to set up an appointment for the next treatment.
 
Shane handed the nurse his card and it was approved instantly. He went
back over and sat down and waited for the doctor to bring Kolby out. This
wait seemed to be longer than the surgery. The door opened and the doctor
brought out Kolby who was still a little woozy. Shane
looked outside and the driver was in the car waiting. They came out of
the doctors office and the driver got out came around and opened the
door. Shane helped Kolby into the car and then got in himself. The driver
closed the door and got back behind the wheel and they were on their way
back home.
 
Kolby was very groggy and was talking but not making much sense.
 
Shane said " Kolby why don't you just relax until we get home and then
you can lay down for a while. "
 
Kolby just nodded his head.  
 
Shane knew that he would have to be careful when they got home because he
was unsure of the situation with Lyle. When they got home they went
inside and Shane was shocked at what he saw. There was Lyle, laying at
the bottom of the stairs. Blood running from his head.
He brought Kolby into the living room and said you wait here while I take
care of something.
 
Kolby stood up and said " it's Lyle right. "
 
Shane said " Yes it is "
 
Kolby walked as far as Shane would let him and then said " Shane I want
to help, please. "
 
Shane said I will get a towel and then I will put him in your lap until
the fire department arrives. Shane went and got a towel he came back
and wrapped it around Lyle's head. Then he got Kolby and brought his into
the hallway and said please sit down right here. He helped Kolby
sit and then he slowly turned Lyle's body and placed it in Kolby's lap.
He remove the towel from Lyle's face and put Kolby's hand there.
 
Kolby said " Shane do you think he suffered much?  Do you think it hurt
him? "
 
Shane said " Kolby I do not think that he felt anything. "
 
Kolby just slowly moved his hand over Lyle's face and smiled and said
well you sure were a very nice looking boy and I am glad I have a picture
because I will spend a lot of time looking at it.  Kolby said " Shane I
want you to do something for me. "
 
Shane said " anything you want. "
 
Tomorrow I want you to start the LYLE HENDRICKS FOUNDATION FOR HOMELESS
BOYS. It is the least that we can do for him. He brought so much pleasure
into my life and at the same time because of evil people he brought a lot
of pain into my life as well. I don't want any young boy to ever have to
go through what we have.
 
Shane put his hand on Kolby's shoulder and said " consider it done. "  He
then said that he would have to help him up and move him to the
living room because the fire department would be arriving shortly and
they would have to do what ever they needed to do.
 
Kolby looked up and said " Shane you know I am very happy right now. I
know that Lyle will never suffer anymore. "
 
Shane smiled and said " I think that he would be very happy that you feel
that way. "  He heard the fire truck coming and said that they would be
here soon. He called Mr Fitzgerald and was explaining what had happened
and wanted him to make all the necessary arrangements for Lyle.
 
Mr Fitzgerald sounded very sad on the phone and asked " Was that that
bright eyed little boy with the smile that just would not stop? " 
 
Shane said " yes it was and I want him to have the best that money can
buy. Tomorrow after school I would like you to stop by as there is
something I need to have you look into.
 
Mr Fitzgerald agreed and then hung up the phone.
 
The fire department arrived and proceed to check Lyle but they said that
it was to late and that they would transport him to the hospital.
One paramedic said that they would probably want to do an autopsy.
 
Shane cleared his throat and said " tell them that no autopsy will be
done. " The funeral home will pick him up later and prepare him for the
service that will be held on Monday morning.
 
They took Lyle's body and headed for the hospital. It would not be long
before the funeral home picked him up. They were going to do a
special thing for Lyle and there would be a special dedication as well.
 
Shane went into the hall and cleaned up the blood on the floor so it
would be done before mom and dad would get home. He was not eager for
them to get home because he knew that they would be very upset. He heard
them pull into the drive and was waiting for them at the door. He opened
the door and asked them to please have a seat in the living room. They
both headed in the living room and they saw Kolby there and figured that
this was about what had taken place at the doctors office today.  Shane
started by saying that the doctor said that everything went as planned
and we have another appointment in a couple weeks. Shane then said I have
some bad news as well. Sometime this morning after Kolby and I left to go
to the doctors Lyle fell down the stairs.
 
Mom jumped to her feet and said " is he alright ? "
 
Kolby told Shane that he wanted to take it from here. Kolby said Mom,
Dad,  Lyle died before we got home. I want you to promise me that you
will try to make this tradgedy a good thing. Lyle loved life, he loved
all of us and it would be a shame if any of us were to dimminish his life
thinking that it was such a waste that he died so young. Lyle lived more
in his short life than most people, he was I guess you could say   he was
HIGH ON LIFE. Lets remember him like that.
 
No one was really hungry and that the news of Lyle's death seemed to
bring a special silence to the house. You could sense the emptiness all
around but it was oddly strange because there seemed to be this strange
force that just would not let anyone feel lost. It was like Lyle
was there and was trying to get everyone to feel better and smile a
little.
 
Kolby said " mom , dad I have to tell you the truth. "
 
Shane stood and walked over to Kolby and whispered " he made me promise
not to tell. "
 
Kolby said " yes he did but not me "  He started with I do not know if
you were aware of what Lyle's last name was. Mostly around here we just
called him Lyle. Well his last name was Hendricks, I was surprised by
that and later found out that all of us in this house were touched
by something very special. Lyle was the little boy that had brought me
home all those months ago. He told us that God had given him a second
chance to come and be with me. The fact that it was for such a short
time was something that I could not understand. He took
that time and now I do understand. He saved me all those months ago. I
think that now with him coming back for even a short time that we have in
a small way saved him as well. Please understand that he did not want us
to mourn his death but to celebrate the wonderful life he had even for
such a short time.
 
The funeral home had a wake for Lyle although not many people showed up.
Lyle was dressed in a fine suit and they did a wonderful job
on him. He looked like he could sit right up and go on with his life. Out
of all the people that showed up it was Cody that seemed to be
effected the  most. Shane and Kolby both stood by him and after wards
they sat down and said that they would very much like him to be their
friend and that they should put everything in the past behind them and
start over.
 
Cody said " I am glad that Lyle was your friend, He was such a loving
person that you both must have meant a lot to him. I only wish that I
could have meant as much. You know I really did love him.
 
Shane said ' We know you did and we also know that Lyle loved you to. He
even told us that we needed to help you through some tough
times that you are going through so anytime you need us you just call or
come over.
 
The wake ended the people that were still there left, Shane, Kolby and
Cody all stayed behind for a moment to say a little prayer together. When
they finished they all felt much better. They asked Cody to come over on
sunday and said that he could stay the night and go with them to the
cemetary on Monday.
 
Cody said " he would be glad to stay and attend the final services for
Lyle. " then he thanked them.
 
Monday morning arrived and the sevice at the funeral home was attended by
Shane, Kolby, Mom, Dad and Cody. They followed the hearse
to the cemetary and Lyle was laid to rest in the children's section.
Everyone spent a few minutes saying their own private prayers and Cody
was kneeling at the grave and was praying and crying thinking of what he
put Lyle through.
 
Shane walked up and lifted Cody up and turned him around and said " I
know first hand that Lyle forgave you and understood that you
were going through some hard times and that is why he wanted us to look
out for you. Please don't mourn him because he is in better
hands and a much better place. 
 
On the way back to the house Shane and Kolby both agreed that when the
apartment was complete that Cody would take Lyle's place and they would
all watch out for each other.
 
Cody was just speechless. He finally decided to let both Shane and Kolby
know what was going on in his life. He has had a hard time trying to 
reach out for help.  He was afraid that people would find out. He told
them that his mom and dad had gotten a divorce several years ago and his
mother remarried. The guy she married was a great gut and he loved them
both very much. He did however have a son that was about tree years older
than Cody. Even though Cody knew martial arts he was afraid that it would
cause them to split up and Cody decided  that for the time being he would
keep his mouth shut. He told Shane and Kolby that his step brother
would force him do sexual things to him and he would do sexual things to
Cody. He told Cody that if he said anything his step brother would say
that Cody did things to him while   
he was sleeping.
 
Shane said " why don't you stay here tonight and you can ride with us to
school in the morning after the service . "
 
Cody said that he would have to call and asked permission. He got on the
phone and asked his step dad and explained everything as far as the
funeral went and that he was asked to stay. His step father said " that
that was a little out of the ordinary but under the circumstances he
thought that it would be ok."  Cody said "  thanks dad. "
 
Shane took him upstairs and said " you can sleep on the same cot that
Lyle used if that is ok with you. "
 
Cody " smiled and said I would like that a lot. "
 
They went back down stairs and between all of them they managed to spend
the day talking about Lyle and all the good times they had and some of
the bad ones to but all in all they each in their own way, some without
really saying the words expressed the love that they had for Lyle and the
loved that they felt he gave back to them.
 
As the day went on they sat and talked, played games and listened to
music. They basically spent the day celebrating the life of their dear
departed friend.
 
As night approached Cody said " maybe I should go home after all. "
 
Shane said " Cody is there something wrong? "
 
Cody hung his head and said " I can't  talk about it now. "
 
Shane said " I understand and he took Cody by the hand and lead him
upstairs to the bedroom and then closed the door. He asked " can you talk
now? "
 
Cody looked at him and took off his shirt and turned around.
 
Shane cringed at the sight of Cody's back. He said  " did your step dad
do that ? "
 
Cody said  " No it was his son. "
 
Shane asked Cody " does he know that he does this to you ? "
 
Cody said " No but I don't want to cause any trouble between my mom and
him. "
 
Shane said " Cody are you going to wait untill he puts you in the
hospital ? " I am sorry but you will be the first person to get into the
LYLE HENDRICKS FOUNDATION FOR HOMELESS BOYS.  Thats it. You will stay
here until I get it all worked out. You will never have to go through
that again.
 
Cody said " but I am not homeless. "
 
Shane calmed down and then said " why don't we go to bed and we can talk
more about it in the morning. I want you to promise me that you will not
try sneak out in the middle on the night.
 
Cody said " I promise. "
 
Kolby came up and knocked on the door and said can I come in. Shane went
and opened the door and said I think we all need to get some sleep. We
are going to have a big day tomorrow. Shane went over to Cody and asked
if he needed any help getting undressed.
 
Cody said " I hurt all over and I can hardly bend my legs. "
 
Shane knelt down in front of Cody and undid his pants and slowly pulled
them down. He lifted up one leg at a time until his pants were off.
He stood and said is the better now.
 
Cody said " yes. "
 
Shane went back over to the bed got undressed and saw that Kolby was
already in bed and sleeping. He headed for the bathroom and when he came
back he heard Cody crying. He went over and sat on the floor beside the
cot and said " is there anything I can do ? "
 
Cody sat up and said " I need someone to help me I can't take it any
more. "
 
Shane said I am here for you. He put his hand on the side of Cody's face
and with his thumbs wiped away the tears and said " come and sleep with
me, you will feel much safer there. "  They climbed into bed and Cody
snuggled up next to Shane and was asleep in a matter of moments. Shane
was thinking that the poor kid probably hasn't slept well in weeks. Shane
fell asleep with his arm draped over Cody.
