Blind Leading The Blind    Chapter 24


Shane was up most of the night. He had all kinds of thing running through
his mind. There was taking Kolby to the doctor. Making sure the garage
construction was moving along. His sudden almost adult Caring that he was
giving Cody. Shane wanted everyone to thing that he
was strong. He sat there on the bed, his head in his hands, he was scared
and the little boy inside him was screaming to get out. He was
beginning to show the wear and tare that the past few months has caused.
He started to sob and he could not stop. He got out of bed and went and
sat in the corner of the room far from Kolby and Cody. He was crying like
he had never cried before. Meeting Kolby had been one of the best days of
his young life. That seemed to be the high light. He was disowned by his
parents because he loved another boy and his father
could not accept that. He had met and fallen in love with Lyle. A sweet
young boy that he felt when they first met was the image of an angel,
he just did not know how right he was. He loved Lyle and he missed him so
very much. He had caused the breakup of Lyle and Cody and only

to take him in and watch over him. He was beginning to feel the pressure
of it.  The walls were closing in around him and he felt there was
nothing he could do about it. He felt a hand of his shoulder. He looked
up to see Cody.

Cody knelt down and looked Shane in the eyes and smiled. He said " all
closing in on you huh, "  Well I guess that you are lucky that I am here
to comfort you. He stood and reached out his hand and Shane took it.

Cody lead him to the cot were he had been sleeping and sat down and
pulled Shane down as well. He reached over and wrapped his arms around

Cody slid down a little and force Shane to lay down and when he did his

Shane asked " what time did you go to sleep. "

on the cot and said " Or will will be sound asleep in all your classes. "

Cody was almost sleeping before Shane laid him down. This time it was
Shane that smiled and did the back rubbing.

Shane walked over to the bed and lightly shook Kolby and said " it is
time to get up. "

Kolby sat up in bed and put his feet on the floor and stood up. He headed
for the bathroom to clean up  before heading for the doctor's.
He came out of the bathroom and was walk into bedroom to get dressed.

Shane said " Cody will not be going to school today he was up all night
trying to comfort me. "

Kolby asked " what are you talking about? "

Shane proceeded to tell Kolby what had happened and what Cody did.

Kolby smiled and said " I guess that little guy really was worth what
Lyle said. "

Shane said " all I know is that he helped me out a lot last night. "  I
will not soon forget it either.

Kolby and Shane went down stairs to get something to eat. Shane made
sausage , egg and cheese bagels. They ate and then went into the living
room to wait for the driver to arrive. They were sitting and talking when
they heard the driver honk. The got up and headed for the door
Shane waited for Kolby to come out and then locked to door behind them.
The walked to the car, got in, and they drove of to the doctor's office.

Kolby was talking and talking all the way to the office and when they
arrived they both got out of the car and walked inside. Shane looked at
the clock and noticed that they were once again about 10 minutes early.
The nurse said the doctor will be right out, please be seated. The
doctor came out and once again took Kolby by the hand and led him into
the back, while Shane sat in the waiting room.

Several hours later the doctor came out and said " that Kolby was doing
fine. " the doctor sat down and added " that there was some scar tissue
that he had to clean up and that it would be a while before Kolby was
ready to go."  He also wanted to tell Shane that there would more than
likely be a bit of pain involved so he was going to give his a
prescription for some pain pills. He wanted Shane to know that there was

lot more scaring than he had thought there would be. He told shane " that
he wanted the bandages to stay on for at least 3 days. When they were
changed he told Shane that it should be done either in the evening when
there would be less light or to do it in a room that had soft lighting
and one or no windows. He also said " the scaring was something that he
did not like and did not expect. "  I will want to see him on Friday  to
check his eye. I want to see if there is any further scaring. It would
not be a good thing if his eye kept scaring up.

Shane said " no problem I will set up an appointment right now. " He
stood up walked over the the window and said " he needed to make an
appointment for Friday. The appointment was made for 11:00 in the
morning. Shane went back and sat down and waited for Kolby

the car andf the driver left.

Cody hearing the car went down and opened the door. He was trying to put

Shane came in and took Kolby upstairs and got him undressed and put him
in bed. He they told him to stay there and if he needed anything
all he had to do was call him or Cody and they would take care if it.

Cody came into the room and was walking rather oddly and Shane asked  "
what was wrong? " Cody said Oh I fell down the stairs this morning

He walked over to Cody and said. " you would not lie to me would you? "
You know you can  tell me the truth.

Cody took a deep breath and asked Shane to not get involved.

Shane looked at him and said " I promise "  but you have to tell me what
happened.

Cody proceeded to tell Shane everything that happened at least as much as
Cody could remember.  He said " I will take care of this,  please
keep out of it, " would you do that for me? "

Shane said " you have my word "  But if you need me just ask.

Cody smiled and said " thanks, if I need you I will. "

Shane and Cody went downstairs and sat and talked about the doctor
appointment and how Shane was concerned about what the doctor said.
He was afraid that maybe this whole thing was just a waste of time and
would not help Kolby at all. He was beginning to feel that he was putting
him through all this and it was because of his greed to want to make him
see. and did not even ask if Kolby wanted to do it. He had
asked his parents but just thought that Kolby would go along because he
wanted it. He never stopped to think how this was going to effect
Kolby. He did not realize that Kolby  had always been blind and what this

Mom and dad got home and Shane filled them in on what the doctor had
said, that he would stay home the next few days and take care of
Kolby, that he had to go back to the doctors on Friday. Mom fixed dinner
and they ate.

Shane went up to see if Kolby was awake and wanted to eat. When he got
upstairs  and went into the bedroom he saw Kolby was still sleeping.
and he seemed to be in the same position that shane put him in when he
put him in bed. He walked over to the side of the bed and placed his hand
lightly on Kolby's chest and just felt his slow and easy breathing.

Cody came up and told Shane that he was going to bed because he needed to
get a lot of rest for tomorrow.

Shane noticed a very strange look in Cody's eyes, it was strange but it
had a look on determination that he had never seen from Cody before.
he said " Cody are you OK.

Cody said " Yeah " he smiled and got undressed and then turned, smiled
again and said " remember your promise. "   Cody climbed into bed
and went to sleep

Shane said good night and turned the light off. He went down to say good
night to mom and dad and the came back up and got undressed and went over
kissed Cody on the cheek and whispewred " I will always be here for you "
then he headed over to the bed climbed in and settled down for a good
nights sleep.

Cody who was still awake was laying there and had one tear run down his
cheek. He was going to solve his problem tonight and was sorry for
what it may do to Shane. He laid there until he was certain that Shane
was asleep. He got up and quietly got dressed and headed for the door

He was surprised when Kolby said " Cody is that you? "

Cody walked over to the side of the bed and said " Yeah just going to the
bathroom. "

Kolby said " Cody please be carefull I don't want anything to happen to
you. I can tell by your voice that you are about to do something that
is scaring you. Shane and I will be here for you if you need us.

Cody bent down and kissed Kolby on the cheek and said " thanks that means
a lot. "

Kolby reached out and pulled him in to a hug and said " just don't forget
it. "  Kolby went back to sleep.

Cody went out of the room and went down the stairs and headed for the
door. He was going to a place that caused him a great deal of pain in the
past but was also a place that he had to go to stop that pain from ever
comimg back.  He went out and closed the door behind him and thought to
himself " there is no turning back this has to end and end now. Cody
slowly walked down the street and into the darkness.
