CHAPTER 3

(1)

Francine sat in her office staring at the old file cabinet that Harry
always kept the household information in. She had been through it, adding
receipts and going over financial statements and such but she had yet to
really it down and o through each drawer. She knew it would have to be
done sooner or later but later always seemed a lot easier to deal with than
sooner.

"Mom, you in there?" Adam's voice came to her through the nearly closed
door to the hall.

"Yes, dear. Come on in." She called out. Maybe spending some time with
Adam would help her. There had been so little time for just the two of
them to be together since the shooting and Jesse's fall. She didn't blame
him for wanting to spend every possible minute with Jesse. She had been
the same way when Harry had been sick or hurt.

"Can we talk?" Adam asked as he came into the office. He stood before her
desk dressed in denim shorts and a Batman tee-shirt. His blond hair was
mussed and in need of a visit to the barber.

She smiled at her beautiful son. He was so much like his father and every
day brought more of that resemblance out. Even in personality they were a
lot alike. "What's up honey?" She asked.

Adam sat down. "I've been thinking about doing something but I need your
approval first." He said.

"Okay, let's hear it." She said. What he could possibly feel the need to
ask her about at this point was beyond her. The last thing had been an ear
ring which she had agreed to without too much concern. God, I hope he
doesn't want a tattoo! She thought.

"Um... I want to get something pierced." He said. His voice was soft and
had a slight stammer to it as he spoke. "I want to get one of my nipples
pierced."

"Oh, Adam, what in the world for?" She asked. It wasn't as bad as she had
expected but not something she was thrilled to think about.

"I just saw this kid in gym a few days ago and he had his right one pierced
and it was kinda sexy."

"What does Jesse have to say about it?" She asked. Hard to believe she
was worried about what her son's boyfriend had to say about what his lover
did.

"He's okay with it. He said you'd never agree though." Adam said. He
smiled. His blue eyes lit up her world as did his smile.

He truly is a beautiful boy. She thought to herself. "Let me think about
it, okay. I guess Jesse wants to do this too?"

"Not as much as me but he said he would get one done if I did." Adam
replied.

"Lord, save me from crazy teenage gay boys!" She said. She was laughing
but the feeling was still there. Always something new to deal with.

"Thanks, mom. Hey, why were you just staring at the old file cabinet?" He
asked.

"Oh, just thinking that I needed to go through there completely to see if
there was something I needed to know about. You never know what could come
up and your father was always prepared for everything." Francine looked
back at the cabinet again. "Want to help me?"

"Sure. Jesse's with the therapist and Josh is out of the house for person
stuff he said." Adam replied. He was still not happy with having Josh
around. He was too much like his dad in appearance which made him too
close to being a twin for comfort. The idea that Josh could be his
half-brother had passed through his mind a few times but as far as he could
remember dad and mom had been married forever before he was born.

"What's that look for?" Francine asked. She got worried because he
suddenly had a hurt, sad look to his features.

"Just thinking." He said. He sat in the chair with his arms crossed, on
the borderline of brooding about something.

"Tell me, honey. I wonder if it's the same thing that is bugging the back
of my mind." She said. She knew how smart her son was. She was the first
to applaud his strength of mind and character. He was a man in a fourteen
year old boy's body. Almost a fifteen year, actually. Oh, God! I'll have
to teach him to drive.

"Josh. There is something that bothers me about him. He's too familiar.
Too much like..."

"Dad?"

"Yeah."

They sat silently for a while.

"How long were you and dad married when I was born?" Adam asked. He
looked at with those bright eyes locking on her like headlights on a deer
in the road.

"A little over a year." She said.

"That's it? A year?" He asked. He was amazed.

"Yes, honey."

"Was dad married before?"

"No. Maybe. I don't really know a lot about your dad's life before he met
me. He has always been...distant about it."

"You think that Josh could be...?"

"I just don't know." She replied.

Both Conners', mother and son took a long look at the four drawer file
cabinet in the corner of the room.

(2)

Josh stood in the hall outside of Mrs. Conner's office. He heard nearly
everything the mother and son said about him and wondered how much of it
could actually be true. He really needed to speak with his mother but who
knows where she was now. If what they said were true... God, what would he
do?

He moved silently back the way he had come and went downstairs. He needed
time to think, to plan.

(3)

"Mom, look at this!" Adam said. His voice rose with his excitement.

"What is it hon?" Francine Conner said. Her heart raced, wondering if she
was about to learn of a secret her late husband had kept from her.

"It's a divorce decree. Mom..." Adam said. He looked up and into his
mother's eyes.

"Tell me Adam." She said.

"Dad was married and divorced before he met you." Adam was amazed. How
many other secrets had his father kept from his mother and himself?

"Oh, God... no." Francine felt like her entire marriage had been a lie.
If it weren't for Adam sitting there experiencing this with her, she would
wonder if she were losing her mind.

"Mom..." Adam began.

"Let me see, baby." Fran said. She held her hand out and noticed this it
was shaking slightly.

Adam handed the papers to his mother and sat back in the chair across from
her watching as she read. He couldn't really begin to imagine what she
could be feeling. Dad had kept a major piece of his past a secret. The
possibility of Josh being his father's first born son was becoming a
reality.

Francine placed the refolded papers on her desk and sat back in her chair.
There were tears streaming from her eyes.

Adam stood and moved around the desk to comfort his crying mother. "Mom, I
am sorry."

"It's not your fault honey. He... he lied to me, kept this and God know
how many other secrets from me the entire time we were married." She said.
She wrapped her arms around her son and pressed her head against his chest
as he leaned over, hugging her. She let the tears flow freely.

Adam held her feeling helpless. He had never seen his mother like this.
He had seen her cry at his father's funeral and the night before it. He
had heard her crying in her bedroom from time to time but never had it been
like this. He was angry. Angry with his father for what he had done as
well as for what he hadn't done.

(5)

Jesse placed the paperback novel on the table beside his bed when he heard
voices in the kitchen. His door was partially open so that he could hear
others and they could hear him if he called out but he couldn't see into
the other room.

The door opened and Adam walked in and closed it behind him. He looked at
Jesse and tried to smile.

"What's wrong?" Jesse asked. He could tell something major had happened
since his lover had gone upstairs to talk to his mother.

Adam sat on the narrow bed beside Jesse and told him about the discovery
that had come to light in his mother's office.

"Oh, man. Is she okay?" Jesse asked.

"She will be, I guess. I don't know what to say to her. I wish I had
never found those damn papers. We didn't expect to find anything."

"What were you looking for, anyway?" Jesse asked. He held Adam's left
hand in his right.

"That's another story all together." Adam said. "I know you have noticed
the strong similarities between me and Josh."

"Yeah, so?" Jesse asked. He looked at Adam, confused.

"Mom showed me a picture of my dad at Josh's age and they look almost
exactly alike. That, along with the divorce papers makes it easy to see
where Josh could be my dad's son too. His first son." Adam finished.

"No way. That would be too big a coincidence. Wouldn't it?" Jesse said.
"Unless..."

"Yeah. Unless Josh knew but it would still be too coincidental. How could
he know that you would be in the hospital and that you and I are lovers?
How could he know you would fall or that mom would hire him to be your care
giver? It's just too shaky. There has to be another explanation." Adam
said.

Josh listened in on another conversation and got worried quick. If they
thought that he had arranged Jesse's fall they would fire him. Maybe even
get him arrested. The possibility that Adam Conner's father was also his
seemed unreal. All he knew of his father was that he and his mom divorced
a year after he was born and that his father denied paternity when he
discovered his wife had been involved in an affair. After that there was
nothing until she told him one morning that his father had died. She
hadn't given him any further information. He had asked many times and she
had always told him the truth, or so he thought. Now he wondered how much
of her truth really was fiction. (6)

Adam laid down next to Jesse on the narrow bed, allowing, no, needing his
partner's arms around him. The shock to his mother was one thing but he
had a great deal to work through on his own now. He felt like he didn't
even know his own father. Why would he have kept something as normal as a
divorce a secret? If Josh was his son, why did he abandon the boy?

"You okay, lover?" Jesse asked.

"Yeah, just hold me, okay?" Adam replied.

"With pleasure." Jesse answered. He pulled Adam back against his body,
wrapped an arm around the other boy'`s upper body and kissed his lover's
neck.

The boys awoke several hours later when the phone rang. The ringing
continued so Adam got up to answer the offending interruption to his time
with Jesse.

"Hello?" Adam said. He held the receiver to his ear as he moved to the
fridge and got two Diet Pepsis for him and Jesse.

"I'm trying to find Jesse Janes." The woman voice was strong, determined.

"He is sleeping now. Can I take a message?" Adam pulled a piece of paper
from a notepad.

"This is his mother. I just thought he should know that his father died
two days ago. The funeral is tomorrow but I would prefer he not show up."
Mrs. Janes did not sound too broken up over the loss of her husband and
showed no remorse over disowning her son.

"I'll give him the message." Adam said. His tone was deep and angry. "It
would take a bit of doing to get Jesse there in his wheelchair anyway."

"Wheelchair?" The woman's voice broke slightly. "Why is he in a
wheelchair?"

Adam wondered if she was actually worried about the son she abandoned. "He
took a bad spill while in the hospital and the injury caused him to be
paralyzed below the waist." He didn't know why he was even bothering to
explain the
situation since she hadn't bothered to visit him in the hospital. She had
to have known that he had been shot because it was in the papers and on the
news.

"I guess that killed anything between you two then." She snapped.

"Not really. His ability to preform sexually is as strong as ever. It's
just his legs that don't work correctly." Adam informed her. He spoke in
much nicer terms that what he was thinking. He wanted to tell her that her
son could still fuck and suck with the best ability ever.

"I'm sorry. My comment was rude. I am also sorry to hear that Jesse has
been injured. I... I have to go." The woman's voice was replaced by a
click then a dial tone.

Adam replaced the phone in it's base and walked back into Jesse's bedroom.

"Who was that? You sure got pissed in a hurry." Jesse said. He had moved
himself onto his back. The strength in his arms and upper body was
increasing with ever visit by the physical therapist.

"Your mother." Adam said. He moved to the bed and sat beside Jesse.

"Well? What did she want?" Jesse said. He now understood his lover's
anger. He felt a great deal of it along with the pain of being abandoned
by his family.

"Who was on the phone?" Francine Conner said. She walked into the small
bedroom. She stopped at the foot of the bed.

"It was Jesse's mom." Adam began. "Baby, I'm sorry to have to tell you
this. I know that you have hard feeling and I have them too..."

"What's wrong, Adam?" Jesse said.

"Your dad died day before yesterday." Adam replied. He took Jesse's right
hand in his left.

"Oh." Jesse said. He looked at Adam in confusion. "Why were you hostile
to her about that?"

"Because she said she did not want you at the funeral." Adam said. He
could feel tears in his eyes. It didn't matter what it was; if Jesse was
hurt by it, so was he.

"Okay, so I'm not going. Big deal." Jesse said. He'd hated the bastard
anyway. Why would he give a shit if the old monster died? Why was he
feeling bad?

"I thought we'd go anyway." Adam said. "He was your dad after all." Adam
said.

Francine remained silent as she stood at the end of the bed with her hands
on the foot board. She wasn't sure what to say or how to say it. It was
sad that he lost his dad but he would have Adam to help him. He would
always have Adam.

"Nope. I don't want to go." Jesse replied.

"You're sure?" Francine asked.

"Yeah. I don't need to go. Besides it will just sting anyway. I don't
want to see any of my family because I know I can't talk to them or be
around them, so why put myself through all that emotional shit?" Jesse
said. The more he thought about he knew this was the right choice for him.
He was sort of sorry the old man died but it didn't change the fact that he
had disowned him when he found out his son was gay.

"Okay then." Adam said.

The doorbell rang in the distance.

"I'll get it." Francine said. She walked out of the room quickly to get
to the front of the house.

Francine opened the door to see Jesse's mom standing there. The woman
looked like she had aged ten years since the last time they had met. Her
hair was streaked with gray and yellow from smoking for so many years. The
woman even smelled of cigarette smoke.

"I want to see my son."
