THE HOMECOMING 2 OF 3

(1)

Jesse was asleep when Adam and Fran entered the hospital room. He lay
there, eyes closed with hands grasping at the sheets.

Adam looked to his mother. "Nightmares again."

"He'll probably have them for a while yet. Are you still having them too?"
Fran asked. She looked at her son as she ran a hand through his lush blond
hair. There were times when the boy was so much like his father that it
literally hurt her to look at him.

"Not really. I have a tinge or a shock once in a while but not the full
nightmare anymore. My worst moments are when I see Phillip firing that damn
gun and then Jesse collapsing, pulling me down with him. I love him so
much, mom." Adam said. He wiped his eyes quickly. He was trying to toughen
up and not let the tears and fears get to him as badly. He wanted Jesse to
see that he could take things and not need protecting. It wasn't all that
easy either.

The door opened behind them and they turned to see who entered. Tommy and
Ryan came in first followed quickly by Greg Harris and Harry. They
exchanged greetings quietly so as not to wake up Jesse.

Adam walked over to the bed and swiped the hair from Jesse's closed
eyes. He looked at the soft, maturing face of his best friend turned
lover. It was as though he hadn't really been alive until he and Jesse
became lovers, boyfriends, life partners...whatever the right term was. It
was whatever they were to each other.

Jesse opened his eyes and looked up into the angelic face of his perfect
love, his personal angel of mercy. The sight of Adam standing there by his
bed, feeling the touch of the boy's hand on his head made him feel more
alive than ever. He had a life worth living because Adam loved him, because
Francine Conner accepted him and had feeling for him, because they had both
made him a part of their family without hesitation to spite all the shit he
had brought along with him. Everybody carries baggage around with them, he
felt like he carried an entire luggage shop with him.

"Hey there lover." Jesse said. He smiled up at Adam who returned the show
of affection. "I missed you."

"I always miss you when you aren't with me. You have company." Adam
said. He bent down and gave his boyfriend a quick kiss.

"Oh?" Jesse said. He looked around Adam to see the others standing near the
door talking. "Dude!" He called out to Tommy.

"Dude!" Tommy returned. He moved quickly to Jesse's bedside. "Lookin' rough
there bud." Tommy teased.

"Yeah, you look like shit too, bucko." Jesse said, then laughed.
"Seriously though, man. It is great to see you."

"Yea, whatever, Jesse." Tommy said. He bent down and gave Jesse a kiss
similar to what Adam had done but with less pure love than Adam's had
held. "Thanks, man."

"For what?" Jesse asked. He looked into Tommy's eyes.

"For sticking around, man. Life would so, suck without you." Tommy said.
He sniffed and wiped an eye quickly. He was not one to show open emotions
like this but he had been thinking so much about how things would have been
if Jesse hadn't lived. How much it would hurt him; how much it would
devastate Adam.

"I'm glad I could oblige." Jesse said. He smiled again. "Hey, give me a
second with Tommy, okay babes?" He said. He looked to Adam.

"Sure." Adam said, returned the smile and walked over to chat with the
others.

"Take care of Adam for me." Jesse said as soon as his lover was out of
hearing range.

"Sure, man, but where are you going to be?"

"I meant his needs. I can't do it. I won't be able to for a while." Jesse
said. He looked over to Adam and noticed that the boy was looking at him as
well.

"Dude, Adam's not gonna do anything with anybody until you get well. He's
already told me that."

"I'm going to talk to him. I want him to have some fun." Jesse said.

"If he wants to, I'm around. I won't push it though, you know. He loves you
too much to do anything, even if he is horny as hell."

"He's sweet." Jesse said.

"He loves you, man. I get jealous as hell sometimes while I think about the
way you two are together."

"You have Ryan though."

"That's different, Jesse. Ryan and I are so much alike it scares me. We
both like sex and we like it with other people as much as with each
other. I've been with Greg and with Harry since I've been staying with
them. It's like a fuckin' orgy over there all the time."

"Sounds like your kind of heaven." Jesse said. He laughed.

"Yeah, it is. What's strange though is that there is love between everybody
in the house. I care for Greg and Harry as much as I do for Ryan, and I can
feel the way they care for me too." Tommy said. He leaned his arms on the
bed rail as he bent over whispering.

"I'm glad you're happy, Tommy. You deserve it, man."

"Thanks." Tommy said. He could feel the tears wanting to flow again so he
stood back up and stretched. His shirt rose up above his belly button.

"Sexy." Jesse said.

Tommy stuck his tongue out.

"Maybe when I get well." Jesse said. He laughed and Tommy joined him.

"You two sure seem to be having a lot of fun over there." Ryan said. He
walked over to the bed and shook hands with Jesse. "Lookin' better man."

"Thanks. You takin' care of this slut?" He nodded his head in Tommy's
direction.

"Hey! I resemble that remark!" Tommy said. This brought laughs from all
three boys.

Adam walked bak over to the bed. "I'm glad you're in a good mood, Jesse."
Adam said.

"Yeah, this is what I needed today, that's for sure." Jesse replied. " I
want you three to go have some fun tonight."Fuck like it's your last time
and think of me when you cum."

"Jesse!" Adam said. He was shocked his lover would say such a thing.

The others laughed at his amazement.

"No, seriously, Adam. Go have fun tonight. Get laid. I know it's just sex
with you and Tommy and I want you to keep doing that. Once I'm well and can
take care of everything myself again, I want us to be exclusive. No more
three ways or group games. Just me and you."

"I... Jesse. I don't know."

"Give us a minute guys." Jesse said.

Tommy and Ryan moved back to where they had been before.

"I love you so much, Adam. I want you to be happy. I want you to have fun."

"I kind of want to, but I don't think it would feel right."

"Why? We've played with Tommy before."

"Yeah, but you were there with us."

"It'll be okay. It's not like you and I haven't done stuff since I got
hurt, right?" Jesse asked.

"Yeah, I know." Adam said. He blushed remembering the times they had gotten
caught at it. "I'll think about it, okay? Tommy is spending the night with
me anyway. We'll see what happens." Adam said.

"Good enough." Jesse said. He smiled. He moved his finger in a come here
motion.

Adam bent down to be met with a deep, tongue sucking kiss.

This drew a chorus of "aww" and "Ohhh" from the gang.

After everyone had visited a while and made there way out of the room,
Jesse turned the television and found an old Star Trek episode to watch.
He didn't want to be left in the silence to think about what might happen
with Adam and Tommy. He knew what he had said was right, at least he felt
like it was right; now he wasn't so sure any more. Maybe Adam wouldn't do
anything at all. That would be so like him and that was one of the things
he loved about his partner, he was loyal to a fault.

He began flipping through channels, unhappy with everything he saw as he
raced through the limited selection.

"Fuck." He said as he turned the TV off again. "Why do I do this shot to
myself, anyway?" He tried to focus on something better to think about.

"Are you okay?" A young orderly said as he entered the room. The guy looked
at about twenty or so with fine blond hair and a pale complexion. He
looked about like what Jesse imagined Adam would look in a few years. In
other words, he was fucking perfect!

"Yeah, I was talking to myself." Jesse said. He tried to play off his
outburst with a bit of humor. "Don't you just hate it when you tell someone
to do something then wish you hadn't?"

"Can't say that I've ever done that before." The orderly said. He picked up
the ice jug and walked out into the hall where he dumped more ice in the
jug before bringing it back to the bed table. "Can I get you anything?"

"No, thanks." Jesse said.

"Okay, call if you need anything. I'm Josh." The orderly said. He smiled as
he gave the younger boy a good look over. He had heard the talk around the
floor about what had happened to him and about the pretty blond boy that
had been caught giving him head. He wished it had been him that could do
the head giving but knew that was a sure fire way to lose this job. He
could have the fantasy at any rate. Damn that Jesse kid was cute!

Jesse looked over at the telephone and reached for it. He almost got there
but missed by an inch or so. He raised himself up as much as his hip would
allow and leaned over the side again. He touched the phone just as he lost
his balance, tumbling over the bed rail with a scream.

The door flew open seconds later and Josh ran into the room. "Dude, you
okay? What happened?" He came around the corner of the bathroom and saw
Jesse on the tile floor. "Damn." He made his way to Jesse's side and went
down on one knee.

"I...I tried to reach the phone." Jesse said through tears. Pain ripped
through his right side and all the way down his leg.

"You should have asked me for it, man." The orderly said as he tried to
figure out what to do. He was glad the kid didn't have an IV in because it
would have surely been pulled out if had.

"I decided I wanted it after you left. I...I didn't want to bother you."
Jesse said.

"Man... How bad is the pain?" Josh asked. He moved the gown to the side
and looked at the area where the surgery had been preformed. There was
blood seeping from the torn incision. "I'll call a nurse. Hold still." He
stood up and found the call button and pressed it several times.

"Yes?" The voice of an annoyed sounding woman came through the small
speakers on the bed rail.

"I've got an accident in here! I need some help with the patient!" Josh
called out.

"On the way." The woman snapped.

Less than a minute later two nurses, one male one female, entered the
room. They went right to Jesse and Josh moved out of the way quickly.

"What happened?" The man said. He was large and black, resembling a
football line backer more than a nurse.

"I...I tried to get to the phone and lost my balance. God, it hurts!"
Jesse cried.

"I'm going to go get a doctor. Keep him still." The woman snapped. She was
about fifty or so and had thick grey hair tied in a severe bun.

The man nodded.

"Don't you have work to do?" She snapped at Josh as she made her way past
him to the door.

"Yes, ma'am. I was just...."

"Just get back to it then." The woman interrupted him. "Well, go on." She
held the door open as Josh turned to look at Jesse again. He turned and
walked out of the room doing something Adam was prone to, he chewed his
bottom lip roughly.

Francine was soaking in a hot bath when she heard the phone ring. She
didn't move, figuring one of those boys would get it. After the third ring
she began to pull herself out of the tub, thinking the boys had gone
outside and couldn't hear it or were doing something more private and
didn't bother. Just as she stepped out the phone stopped ringing.
"Figures, now they get it." She moved back into the tub and started to ease
back into the warm water.

"Mom!" Adam screamed.

Francine jumped fearing something had happened to him from the sound of his
voice.

"Mom!" He screamed again, closer this time. He rapped his knuckles against
the door hard.

"What is it? What's wrong?" Francine called out. She climbed from the tub
again and grabbed a towel.

"Jesse. Something happened and he got hurt. They are taking him back into
surgery!"

The panic and fear in Adam's voice sent cold shivers through Francine
Conner. "Okay, baby. I'm coming. Get ready to leave." She dried herself
quickly, wondering what fresh hell had come to haunt them now.

Tommy wrapped his arms around Adam and let the other boy cry against his
shoulder. He knew Adam had been trying so hard to be stronger but this was
too much. The tears burned his own eyes as he held his friend.

"Why, he was doing great, he was coming home." Adam said, his voice muffled
by the cloth of Tommy's shirt.

"Come on man. Keep it together. You don't want Jesse to see you like this,
do you?"

Adam broke down crying harder. He tightened his grip on Tommy's arms.

"Okay, wrong thing to say." Tommy said, trying to lighten things, looking
for away to break through his friend's grief.

"Okay, let's go." Fran Conner said. She walked into the kitchen and saw
Tommy holding a barely consolable Adam. "What is it? Have they called
back?" She got scared.

Tommy shook his head.

"Come on baby." Fran said as she approached the boys.

Adam switched from Tommy to his mother mid crying jag.

"Go start the car." Fran said. She handed the keys over to Tommy who took
them and went through the door into the garage wordlessly. She heard the
engine fire up and a few minutes later the horn blew softly. "Okay, Adam.
Let's go see what's going on." She played with his hair with her right
hand.

Adam pulled away and walked toward the door to the garage. Just before he
got to the door the phone rang. He turned and looked to his mother as
though he knew what the person was calling about.

"Hello?" Francine said as she brought the receiver to her ear. "Hello,
Ryan. Tommy can't come to the phone. We are on our way back to the
hospital. There's been some kind of accident with Jesse. I'll have him call
you when we know something. Yes, okay. Bye." She replaced the hand set in
it's hook and walked to Adam. "Come on."

They walked into the garage and Fran pulled the door closed behind her.

The operation was short and Dr. Granger came to them right after leaving
Jesse. He had taken off his surgical gown but still wore the blue paper
looking pants and a blue pull over shirt.

"Well, he was lucky. The blood was from a simple incision tear. The artery
was not involved so luck came through there. He has torn a few muscles in
his groin and hip area which are going to cause a lot of pain and some
additional physical therapy though. Over all I would have to say it could
have been a good site worse." The man looked at the worried people sitting
around Jesse's hospital room.

"Thank you doctor." Fran said. Relief filled her in more ways than she
would have thought possible.

"He's not going home Monday, is he?" Adam asked. He knew the answer would
be a strong no btu had to ask anyway.

"I think we better hold off another week. He could go but I would worry
about him being able to move much without pain and there is the therapy to
think about."

"I'll take care of him. I swear." Adam said.

"He's not a puppy, Adam." Francine said, surprised he would even consider
saying such a thing.

"I'm sure you would. He says he was trying to get to the phone to call
you." The doctor said.

Fran thought that was information he could have spared Adam. He shouldered
enough guilt where bad things happened in life.

"Oh." Adam said. He looked down at his shoes. He was trying to get to me
and I wasn't here, Adam thought to himself.

"It isn't your fault, Adam." Dr. Granger said. "While he was going under
all he could say was how much he loves you. I have to admit I am stunned.
I have never seen two people, much less, two boys who share the kind of
bond and love that you share with Jesse."

Adam looked up and gave a small smile.

"If he shows strong progress I'll let him go on Thursday, okay?" He
couldn't believe he was making a deal with a patient's boyfriend.

"Can I stay in his room with him tonight?" Adam asked. He chewed at his
lip.

"Well, I guess we can bend the rules this once. Tonight only though."
Granger said. He couldn't see the harm in allowing the boy to stay. It
would even be good for his patient to wake up with someone he cared about
near by. That is if the boy even woke up before morning.

"Thank you doctor." Adam said.

"Let's make sure he does okay in recovery and I'll take to the night
nursing supervisor."

Adam nodded. He couldn't thank the man enough if he tried and he didn't
have the words right then anyway.

(5)

Jesse woke up at dawn to find Adam stretched out in the recliner snoring
away. He was amazed that his lover was there so early. He felt like such an
ass for falling the way he had. If he'd just called the orderly when he was
he couldn't reach the first time...

"Adam." He called. His throat was sore and itchy. "Adam." He called louder.

Adam sat up in the chair and nearly tipped it over trying to get to his
feet. He moved to the bed quickly. "You okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, I am now that you're here." Jesse said. He smiled. "I fucked up,
babe."

"Yeah, a little." Adam replied. "It's gonna hurt like a bitch for a while
too. The doc said you messed up some muscles."

"Really? I can't feel much down there right now." Jesse said. He tried to
move his leg but met with strong resistance. He looked up at Adam, wide
eyed. "Adam... I can't get my legs to move."
