CHAPTER TWENTY  ONE

The medication Davey was given to reduce the fever worked and he felt so
much better.

On the bus going from school to the gymnastic competition venue he sat next
to Johnny and promptly fell asleep for the hour or so drive. When Johnny
woke him as they arrived at their destination he asked Davey how he felt
and Davey replied saying, "I feel great, all I want is a good luck kiss
from you."  Looking quickly around and seeing no one was taking a lot of
notice of them as the other team members were busy getting their gear
together to get off the bus he leant forward giving his boyfriend a kiss on
the lips.

"That's just a taster." He said, "If you win just imagine what else you'll
get." Johnny teased his partner with these words. Laughing they got off the
bus making their way into the host school's gymnasium where the team coach
and also Jonathon Mars were waiting for the guys to get ready and start
their warm-ups.

During the warm up Davey began to really get into his stride and all his
pain and fever left him as he used his Karate training to go onto another
plane.  Soon it was time for the competition to begin and Davey was pleased
to see that he was pretty much ready for the program so he could check out
the competition.

Only a couple of guys impressed him.  All the time he was watching and
mentally preparing himself Jonathon was talking to him, convincing him
psychologically just how great he was. Several of those competing had falls
and didn't do too good, leaving just three or four for which he needed to
better, "You can beat them Davey, you have done better in practise than
they have so go out there and make a name for yourself." Were Jonathon's
parting words as Davey headed for the Rings.

Jonathon helped him up and then stood back, ready to catch his young charge
if he should fall.  He need not have worried because Davey performed
perfectly and received a averaged score from the judges of nine point five,
the highest of the day with one judge marking him a perfect ten.

After a break it was parallel bars where Davey once again blitzed the
competition. Scoring a averaged nine point three which put him well and
truly in the lead for these two sections. Looking at the results board he
was thrilled to see that his school was way ahead on points from the
nearest other high school, so all of his team were doing well.

There was a long gap before his final event, the pommel horse.  Davey was
starting to get tired and his concentration lapsed so that when it was his
turn he didn't do too well and only scored in the eighties which put him in
third place.

When the Metal Presentation was made he was awarded two gold and a bronze
metal.  This brought loud cheers and applause from the many spectators that
had travelled to support the school.  He also got a lot of admiring
applause from the other schools for whom Jonathon was sure that they wished
that Davey went to their school.

Davey's school won overall and it was a very jubilant group travelling back
in the bus.  Several of those who originally knocked Davey as a poof and a
young upstart now were coming up and patting him on the back.  Johnny
Walker was sitting next to him, his chest sticking out a mile, so happy
that his lover and boyfriend had done so well and shown the school district
just how good he was.

Jonathon and the school team coach spent the whole time talking about Davey
and what the future might hold for him.  They both agreed that by the year
two thousand he should be ready for the Olympic selection, "He could even
be considered for the nineteen ninety six games." Jonathon remarked, "After
all that is four years away and he might be getting a bit too old by two
thousand."

A large group from the hostel had travelled to the gymnastics meet and when
Davey arrived back from school in Jonathon's car they were all lined up in
the car park to give him a hero's welcome.  Those that didn't go watched it
on television. While he was enjoying the limelight to some extent all he
wanted was something to eat because he was hungry and then he wanted to go
to bed and lay down next to his lover.

Just as he entered the foyer the phone rang and it was for him.  Before he
could get to the phone Jonathon picked it up and after listening for just a
few seconds he got redder and redder and began screaming obscenities down
the line telling whoever it was that Davey was now his protégé and to
fuck off because his phone calls where interfering with his young charges
training.

Slamming the phone down he stormed off and everyone looked on in amazement
because they had never ever heard Jonathon swear, not even a damn. Davey
began to look upset realizing who his coach had been talking to and wishing
something could be done about it.  Little did he realise that Jonathon was
already on the phone to the prison authorities in Alamogordo demanding that
Jared Dempsey's phone calls be monitored, otherwise legal action will be
taken.

The big shock came when Jonathon was told that Jared had just been released
on parole and that they should talk to his parole officer.  The person he
spoke to gave him the parole officer's number suggesting that he call him
on Monday when he would be back in his office. Slamming the phone down
Jonathon stormed off cursing and swearing under his breath.

Not sure what was going on Davey and Johnny made their way to the dining
room for a slap up supper which the kitchen staff had prepared especially
in their honour. Everyone wanted to see Davey's medals and continued to
congratulate him for his great achievement.  Because most of them went to
the same high school as he did they were very proud of someone who was now
their hero.

All Davey wanted was to finish eating and go to bed with his lover Johnny,
make love and go to sleep.  While he was very tired, the adrenalin still
pumping through his veins was also making him horny, a message he whispered
into Johnny's ear when he got the chance.

Finally they were able to get away.  After locking their room door they
proceeded to strip each other before making love.  They still hadn't
plucked up enough courage to go all the way after the last time when Davey
had to go the hospital to stop bleeding.  They were scared that this might
happen again although Doctor Evans gave them creams and advice to ensure it
didn't.

While Davey and Johnny were making love so was Garrett and Edwin and they
too still hadn't reached the point of going all the way. Being in the
hospital, albeit a private room, it was difficult to do anything sexual
without being caught by the nursing staff. So they had to be content with
just kissing and oral sex which both of them enjoyed anyway.

When they had both shot their load into each other's mouths and lay side by
side, Garrett passed on the news that Keith Jameson had told him earlier in
the day, "The prison authorities want me to go back into the detention
facility at the hostel and go back to the trade school as well but I don't
want to leave you because this means we won't see each other."

"I'd rather die than not be with you Garrett." Edwin said with tears
forming in his eyes. "It's you that's been the means which has kept me
alive and if need be I will go before the judge and tell him that you saved
my life."

Garrett hugged his young lover telling him not to worry yet, that according
to Keith his lawyer is confident that everything will work out well. The
next day Keith collected him early making sure that he was dressed in a
suit and with a tie ready to go before Judge Garcia, "Garrett, Edwin isn't
yet well enough to go to court with you but I will take a signed statement
with me for your lawyer.  He is the same one that the hostel uses and is
very good." Keith explained to them.

This put both their minds at ease and once the statement had been typed up
and signed they left for the courthouse to meet Garrett's lawyer.  He was a
middle aged guy with a friendly face and going a a bit grey that greeted
Garrett with a handshake which was warm and friendly, "Don't worry Garrett
I will do my best to get you released into Dr Jamison's custody so that you
can remain at the hospital.  I will explain to Judge Garcia that you want
to make nursing and if possible a doctor as a career, which hopefully will
sway him." He told Garrett.

"Mind you the director of public prosecutions is out for blood and thinks
we are being too soft on you after what you did.  But I have another ace up
my sleeve which should sway the judge in our direction." He didn't
elaborate, just winking at Garrett and Keith before going on to explain how
things would go in the courtroom.

They didn't have to wait long before they were called into the courtroom
and stood until Judge Garcia came in. After the usual formalities, the
assistant district attorney (ADA) handling the case presented to the judge
a list of reasons why Garrett Buchanan should be return to a more secure
facility.  Beginning with the fact that the attack he led on a junior
student at the high school was brutal and viscous.  This attack almost
resulted in the death not only of the young man in question but also a
senior student who went to his aid and the school principle who was also
attacked.

He went on, "The state believes that this young man has mislead his
psychiatrist into believing he could help a dying young boy in hospital and
thus get out of the punishment which you your honour handed down in this
very court."

After hearing everything the ADA had to say Garrett thought that his goose
was cooked until his lawyer stood up to answer the allegations, "Your
honour this young man once he was away from his mother's influence realized
that what he did and had been instructed to do by his mother was wrong and
he is doing everything he can to right that wrong."

He paused for effect before continuing, "By tending to a young man who had
been raped and impregnated with the AIDS virus, this Garrett was able to
convince the man to fight the battle against this sickness.  The resulting
consequence it appears is that he has beaten it or at least given this
young fellow more time that any doctors thought he had." He then went onto
explain that Garrett was seriously considering a career in nursing and
maybe even becoming a doctor.


He then tendered the written document from Edwin to the court and also
asked Doctor Keith Jamieson to take the stand.  He then took the doctor
through everything that had transpired since Garrett came under his care
and Keith explained all the good work Garrett had done and how he cared for
Edwin as if he was his own child.

During all this the ADA tried very hard to object and throw objections in
whenever he could but it soon became clear that he was losing the
battle. Garrett's lawyer than played his ace card producing a written
statement from Davey Hernandez himself.  On it Davey declared that he had
several meetings with Garrett under Doctor Jamison's supervision and he was
more than satisfied that he had acted in carrying out other peoples
instructions and that the both of them were on the way to becoming friends.
He had no objection to Garrett being in the hostel in the open section the
same as he was.

At this point Judge Garcia called a halt and said that he would return
shortly with a ruling. He left the courtroom and retired to his chambers
were he sat for some time going over all that had been said and put to him
in the court. After weighing up the evidence on both sides he called the
court bailiff telling him that he would be returning with his ruling.

It was a very scared Garrett who waited for Judge Garcia to sit down,
shuffle his notes around before commencing to speak, "Young man I'd like
you to come and stand before me here in court so that you can hear and take
in everything I have to say.

The crime you committed was terrible and you should be punished and
continue to be punished for what you did. Admittedly at the time you were
under the influence of two wicked ladies who have since been incarcerated
hopefully for a long time.  Ever since you have come under Doctor Jamison
you have shown a lot of compassion and have helped I'm sure save the life
of a young man who was made sick through no fault of his own and for this
you should be commended."

He paused letting all that he had said sink in before continuing, "As I
said prior you should still be punished for the terrible crime you
committed on David Hernandez.  Therefore I am still going to place you on
probation for two more years and once more release you into the care of
Doctor Keith Jamison so that you can continue your work at the hospital.  I
also order that you live in the hostel if they will accept you in the
normal section, but any contact you have with David Hernandez must be with
others around and you will never contact him or be alone with him. Is that
understood?"

Garrett could hardly believe what he was hearing from someone who was noted
as being a very strict judge.  All he managed to stammer was a thank you
before the judge rose and left the court room after declaring the
proceedings adjourned.

While Garrett stood there for a few moments stunned at what the judge had
just told him, Keith was already on the phone telling his partner Doctor
Evans the good news, adding that he shouldn't tell Edwin but leave that to
Garrett when they got back to the hospital.  Finally Garrett returned to
thank his lawyer and to give Keith a big hug.

Meanwhile the ADA was looking most unhappy wondering how he was going to
explain to his boss the district attorney what had happened, because he was
sure Garrett was going back into the detention section of the hostel.

Meanwhile Garrett's mother Margaret Buchanan was meeting with her attorney
planning an application for Parole.  Since being incarcerated Margaret had
become a model prisoner and while she had been disbarred from practising
psychiatry she used her training in prison to help her fellow inmates.  The
other Margaret who you may remember was the social worker who also abused
Davey and was one of the instigators of Garrett's attack on him had
deliberately been sent to another facility so that the two of them couldn't
meet up.

Ms Buchanan's attorney was confident that she stood a good chance of
getting parole if she continued to behave herself in prison. The other
disturbing factor was that if she got paroled, after a suitable time she
was going to seek custody of her son Garrett once more. While Garrett was
unaware of this, when he does find out it will cause some worry and
concern.

Once he got back to the hospital Garrett could hardly wait to rush in and
tell Edwin the good news.  While they were kissing and hugging several
doctors walked in including Doctor Evans and proceeded to examine
Edwin. Once they had finished they conferred in hushed tones before doctor
Evans spoke to them both, "We are very satisfied with your progress Edwin
thanks to the new experimental drug. As I have told you previously you will
be on drugs and medication for the rest of your life.  By doing this we
should be able to keep you in reasonable health.

By this I mean that there will be times when you will feel sick again but
we are confident that we can take good care of you. We are going to allow
you to go with Garrett to the Joey Alverez shelter to live, with the
understanding that for the time being you will come to see us every second
day for treatment. Keith Jamison will speak to you about some general
matters regarding your education and so on but tomorrow all being well, you
will be leaving us."

Everyone let out a big cheer because by now quite a few of the nursing
staff and some of the patients had gathered around to hear the news as
Doctor Evans finished up by stating, "Tonight we are going to have a
farewell for Edwin, a party which is being organised as we speak by some of
the staff."

Keith Jamison wasn't at the hospital when the boys received the good
news. Once he had dropped Garrett off, he headed to the hostel and a
meeting with social director Sally.  His main job was to convince her that
even though the judge ordered it, that Garrett would behave himself in the
general section of the hostel.  He also needed to explain to Davey what was
going on.

"Keith, while I will abide by Judge Garcia and your judgment, if Garrett
steps out of line just once I will personally go back to the judge and
demand that he be moved back to the detention floor.  Regarding Davey, I'm
not sure if he will be able to cope with having Garrett in his sights all
the time.  That is a task for you to talk to him about and convince him
otherwise, but tell him that Garrett he is on notice and I will be watching
him very carefully."

Keith assured her that the young guy will behave himself as Sally
continued, "I am also concerned about having Garrett and Edwin sleep in the
same room. As you are aware this is not hostel policy and without talking
to the owner I can't condone this but I will bend a little and have them
move into adjoining rooms with a connecting door." After making this
statement she smiled and winked at Keith.

Doctor Jamison then went looking for Davey and of course found him training
in the gymnasium. After asking Jonathon's permission to speak to both Davey
and Johnny he took them to one side explaining to them Judge Garcia's
ruling regarding Garrett.  He explained that Edwin would be moving out of
hospital and into the hostel tomorrow, "The thing is boys that Garrett will
be eating and doing a lot of things in your presence.  It is going to be
very difficult for you two not to meet on occasions in the corridors or
elevators. I am sure in my own mind that Garrett has changed and will not
do anything to harm you, in fact I believe that he still wants to continue
to strengthen the friendship."

Davey thought for a while before answering, "I have no problems any longer
with Garrett, what he did was while he was under the influence of others
and will never ever do anything like that again, of that I'm sure."  Keith
marvelled at the words of wisdom coming out of the mouth of one so young
and hoped and prayed that everything he said would happen with no dramas.

While Sally was busy with matters at the hostel, Bethany her partner was
busy trying to organize the ring exchanging ceremony with the two gay
celebrants who she feared were going to use the event to further the cause
of same sex marriage in Texas.  All the two lesbian lovers wanted was a
quiet event with family and friends.  If it was to become a circus then
Bethany would have no hesitation to pull the plug.

So far everything had been going well with the two guys going through the
ceremony with her.  Making the whole event look very tasteful and well
done, "What we would like to do sweetie is to have the two rings placed on
each other's hands at the same time with you both saying the magic words of
love to each other.  We will both assist with this part of the ceremony,
what do you think of that?"

Bethany thought it would be very nice for that to happen.  That was the
whole explanation of the event.  The guys explained but they kept referring
to the fact that it was such a pity it couldn't be legal and official which
had Bethany feeling not too sure about the whole thing.  Until they came
out and said something more positive or did something wrong she couldn't
really say anything so she left things alone.  Later that evening when
cuddling up to Sally she told her in detail what was going to happen and
both of them agreed all looked to be all right.

"The next thing is to send out the invitations and make sure we don't miss
anyone out who might be offended if they don't get one."  Because she was
her second in command at the hostel Sally also took the opportunity to
discuss the possible problems with Garrett and Davey.  Bethany was sure
that everything would be all right now that Garrett was out of his mother's
clutches.

"Now please boss let's stop talking shop because I want to kiss, cuddle and
make love to you."

"You don't have to ask me twice." Sally replied with a laugh as she grabbed
her lovers arm leading her to the bedroom.

Luke called Jason into his office as soon as he got into work the next day
after the gay taunt incident.  After inviting his second in charge of the
school program to sit down and organizing a drink for him he began to
discuss strategies in case any gay slurs cropped up again, "I'm sure that
we will find some asshole who wants to stir and cause trouble again, so we
must be ready for them this time." He continued, "Do you have any ideas of
your own on how to handle this situation?"

"Yes sir, err Luke, my boyfriend and I discussed this at length last night
and we think the best tactic is to hit it head on and openly discuss
homosexuality right there in the classroom.  Of course we can't do this in
a junior class but then they are less likely to ask awkward questions."

Luke was very impressed that his protégé had thought this through and
let him continue to explain what he and his boyfriend had decided, "I or
should I say we think that I should explain that I was created gay and
didn't catch it off some toilet seat or something like that."

That last remark caused Luke to smile as Jason continued, "I think I should
do all the talking on this subject after all you don't have the practical
experience." Both of them burst out laughing as Jason hurriedly continued
to clarify that statement.

"That doesn't mean that I will go into details regarding my relationship
except to say that I am in a relationship just like most of them are. Maybe
at that point you can jump in Luke and explain the police department policy
on gays and then we answer any questions that may arise.  Hopefully there
won't be too many or any that are asking for more details on what
homosexuals do."

Luke was extremely impressed with the way Jason and his boyfriend had
thought this through and commended him on it, "Well done Jason, I think
after you have explained things in that way we might not have too many
questions or problems.  I think you should also make mention that taunting
or mocking gays is bullying and that it will not be tolerated either by the
school or us."

Jason thought that was a good point as he remembered something else, "Also
at the library last night I discovered several booklets on this subject and
wondered if we could include some copies in our schools kit and hand them
out if asked?"

"Excellent idea, get a purchase order and buy some Jason." With that they
continued chatting in general for a little while before Pru reminded Luke
that he was already late for another appointment.  They parted with a
handshake and Luke voiced another expression of admiration for the young
recruit he had choosen to help him with this project.

The party in the AIDS ward at Providence hospital was a big affair.
Nursing staff from other floors who had spent time with Edwin began
arriving in droves, all armed with gifts and enough food to feed the whole
hospital for a week.

 Edwin couldn't believe the gifts he received and remarked to Garrett that
they would have enough toiletries and cologne to last them a year. Plus
because he had no clothing he got tee shirts, jeans socks and even shoes to
go to the hostel with.


Sally had already organized some clothing for him but when she arrived with
Bethany at the hospital, albeit a little late because of a certain bedroom
romp, she was astounded at the gifts.  A collection hurriedly organized by
the staff and circulated throughout the hospital produced a tidy sum of
cash for Edwin to do whatever he wanted with.  He promptly handed the money
over to Doctor Evans so that some items to help those very sick with the
AIDS virus could get some relief.

When he announced this and handed over the cash there were a lot of tears
flowing for this kind generous young man who didn't have a nasty bone in
his body. All this time a very proud and happy Garrett sat by his side
holding hands with his lover.  It was quite late when everyone had finally
left and the two of them were alone.

Taking Edwin into his arms Garrett whispered, "I love you so much Edwin and
I'm so happy that you are ready to leave this hospital and join me at the
hostel for what I hope will be forever and ever."  They kissed for some
time before Garrett broke off and continued, "And I hope in time that I
will be able to be either your doctor or nurse depending on how my studies
go."

This time their petting got heavier and heavier and they made long tender
love for several hours. Neither of them at this stage was willing to go all
the way but were happy and contented with what they did do together.

Despite the late night and long lovemaking session both of them were up,
dressed and packed, ready and waiting for Keith to pick them up and take
them to the hostel. First some paperwork had to be completed and a bag full
of pills handed over with instruction on what and when they had to be
taken. Both boys were involved in these instructions because they had to be
followed to the letter, otherwise Edwin could find himself back in a
hospital bed.

The next task was to go round and say goodbye to all the other AIDS
patients who over the past months they had both got to know. After many
hugs and a few tears they had finally said all their goodbyes and Keith was
waiting patiently to take them to the hostel. Hospital rules demanded that
Edwin must be wheeled out in a wheelchair and there was a big argument as
to who would have that honour among the nursing staff.  Finally Doctor
Evans pulled rank and did the job himself.

Edwin had become a household name throughout the hospital and let's not
forget all the work and effort that Garrett had put in hadn't gone
unnoticed.  Therefore the corridors were lined with staff all applauding
and cheering this brave young man and his heroic helper.

Once they got to the hospital foyer it was difficult for Doctor Evans to
push the wheelchair through the crowds.  Even the hospital management was
there to present Edwin with a big bunch of flowers and Garrett a massive
box of chocolates. Finally they made it to Keith's car which was already
loaded up with all the gifts from the night before.

Just before they drove off someone in the crowd shouted, "Three cheers for
a very brave young man." The loud cheers brought people in nearby offices
to their windows to find out what was going on. Finally they were on their
way with the two boys sitting in the back like royalty, holding hands and
smiling from ear to ear.

Their arrival at the hostel, while it was a bit more low key also attracted
a crowd of guests and inmates including Davey and Johnny Walker who joined
the throng to welcome the pair.  Sally, Bethany, along with most of their
staff and also the two young owners were standing outside to greet them.

As soon as they got out of the car Davey went over and a big hush went over
the crowd as he approached Garrett.  Taking him in his arms and giving him
a big hug he said, "Welcome back my dear friend or should I say brother and
I take it this is your boyfriend Edwin?" With that he embraced Edwin with
Johnny following suit.  Then they both grabbed stuff out of the car and
helped the other two into the hostel.

Keith looked at Sally mouthing the words, "It looks like we have had
success here." Sally smiling nodded her head in agreement. Davey and Johnny
helped Garrett and Edwin up to their rooms.  While this was totally against
Judge Garcia's ruling there wasn't much any could or wanted to do to stop
what was going to be a long and happy friendship.

Just as Sally was walking back into the facility she was told there was a
phone call for her whom she agreed to take in reception. Her face got paler
and paler as she listened on the phone.  When she hung up the receiver she
called Keith over, "that was our lawyer confirming what you told me
earlier.  Margaret Buchanan is applying for parole and she has made it
known that if it is granted she will fight for custody of Garrett."

Keith also had a very worried look on his face, "I think it might be best
if I tell Garrett the news and it should be done right away before rumours
start to circulate. I'm not sure if he heard the lawyer mention it in court
to me or not so I'd best go do it now."

Slowly making his way to the elevator and up to the two boy's rooms he
wasn't sure how this news was going to be received or the best way for him
to handle it. Once he arrived outside Garrett's door he heard voices inside
guessing correctly that Edwin was in there with him.

He knocked and Garrett called come in.  Inside both boys was sitting on the
bed and had more than likely been kissing and cuddling. Keith went in
sitting down also on the bed next to Garrett, "I'm not sure if you heard
what your lawyer told me in court yesterday but I thought I'd better let
you know what is going on before you hear it second hand.  I'm sorry to say
it is not good news."

He paused to let those words sink in before continuing, "Your mother is
applying for parole and she has been a model prisoner so the general
consensus is that she will get it.  The other news is that if she does get
out of prison she intends to apply for custody of her only son, you."

It seemed like minutes but it was more than likely only a few seconds as
that news sank in before Garrett jumped up, red in the face with anger
rising within him, "No fucking way am I going back to that bitch." He
yelled is voice rising with every word. "She ruined my fucking life along
with Davey's and a few others and I refuse to go back to her.  She is an
evil mean nasty son of a bitch and I want nothing more to do with her, as
far as I'm concerned I don't have a fucking mother."

Writers Corner.  A lot happened in this chapter including Davey doing very
well in his first Gymnastic championship under Jonathon's training and
already they are talking about the Olympics.

The other great news is that Garrett is not going back into detention and
will be allowed to spend his time at the hostel with Edwin, or will he?
Will he be forced to go back to his mother?  I think he will fight tooth
and nail over that one.

Edwin has certainly won many hearts since he was admitted to hospital and

Jason also appears to have all the answers regarding gays in the EP police
force and let's hope this strategy pays off during future school visits.

Editors Corner.

Now this was a chapter packed with many events.

One thing that concerns me is what is going to happen to Jared Dempsey.  I
personally do not view him as a bad person.  He was there for Davey for a
long time before they made love together.  While that should never have
happened it was in my opinion an act of love by Jared.  Now he has paid the
price for that indiscretion with jail time served and I think he deserves
to be able to spend time with Davey if Davey so desires it.  I think he
deserves another chance.  I am not sure what Jonathan is planning on
telling Jared's parole officer but Jared has not done anything wrong in
calling Davey. He certainly does not deserve to go back to jail.  That is
my take (I do not know Trevor's take, he may think otherwise).

I am so glad that Garrett is getting to go to the hostel and that Edwin is
going with him.  But it is definitely scary that Garrett's mother now wants
custody of her son.  If I was Garrett I would ask the judge to let him
serve his probation while living in the hostel.  That his mother was a
definite bad influence on him and he wants no part of her.  The judge if he
lets her out on probation should make a stipulation that she have no
contact with Garrett unless supervised.

Well enough of my thoughts.  I do not know what you guys think but I think
this story is getting really really good.  Let Trevor know your thoughts,
good or bad.
