Heart Breaking Love 6
The door bust open. I heard a choked sound coming from the doorway. I
jumped away for Beau, ashamed of what I had done. When I slowly let my eyes
make their to the door, I saw Wade standing there with a bag of McDonalds'
in one hand. Oh fuck.
Everything was silent. Wade stared at me, emotions flying across his face.
Finally he spoke, well, yelled,
"WHAT THE HELL AIDEN?!"
I immediately began running my mouth, excuses coming as quickly as the
tears. Wade looked at Beau, completely ignoring me. He started walking
threateningly toward him. I blocked his path and tried to talk, but he
pushed me aside. He landed a single punch to Beau's jaw before leaving, not
saying a word.
Mama came in, hearing wade slam the front door hard enough to rattle the
whole house. Beau explained what happened. She just looked at me, sighed,
and walked out. I sat on the ground, sniffling and wiping tears with my
sleeve. Beau left soon too.
Everyone had left me, alone in my room. I closed and locked the door. I
turned out all the lights and lay in bed until an uneasy sleep engulfed me.
At school the next day, Beau talked to me. But in a more distant manner.
His jaw bore a bruise that I knew Wade would be elated about. I texted Sam
during first, second, and third period. She never answered.
When I got to our regular lunch spot, I saw she was alone. I went straight
to her.
"Hi Sam." I said, plopping next to her. She looked at me
for a second and sighed.
"Aiden, we need to talk."
"About what?" I asked.
"I don't if I really want to be around you anymore."
"Wait, what? Why?"
"The shit you pulled on Wade! I still like him, Aiden. But
he was into you so I stepped back. Then you go off and fuck Beau! He really
liked you and you shattered his heart. I'm sorry, but I can't be around
bitches." She stood up and left.
I just sat there for a few minutes before leaving the theater. I walked
around until the bell rang signaling us to go to next period.
I was feeling weird when I got home that afternoon. Not sad, not happy.
Just... Weird. My parents kept away from me, and left with quick goodbyes.
I finally decided to call Wade. He picked up on the third ring.
"Aiden, don't ever call me again." The line went dead. I
tried calling Beau, but he wouldn't even pick up.
Misery overcame me. A cloud of despair hung over me as I drew a warm bath.
I looked at the water for a few moments before understanding exactly what I
meant to do. I picked out the sharpest knife I'm the kitchen and went back
to the bathroom. I knelt in front of the path, as if in prayer. My
breathing quickened and my heart began pounding. Was I really going to do
this? Kill myself? No. I couldn't. I dropped the knife to the ground and
sat on the toilet, seat down. My phone rang. I saw it was Wade. Full of
hope, I answered.
"Before I stop talking to you forever, "Wade began, "I just
want you to know Aiden, you were the worst mistake I ever-" I hung up.
I couldn't listen to him anymore. I couldn't listen to anything anymore. I
wanted the coldness of death to sweep over me. That's what I wanted. What I
needed. I knelt before the tub and had no hesitation this time. I was
alone. Death was my only comfort. I slashed up my arm, twice on each wrist.
I barely felt it. I plunged my arms into the warm water, where the blood
was encouraged to flow freely. I felt that coldness that I so dearly
wanted. Fuck Wade, fuck Beau, fuck Sam. They'd see in me in hell. As my
life bled away, I saw everything I had done.
When I first met Beau, in his underwear. Our first kiss. Electric and
passionate.
Our first time together, how the kiss seemed so minuscule.
Then breaking up and making up. Wade came into my world, and loved me. I
know he tried to show that he was better than Beau, he loved me. Wrapped in
his arms, I felt like I couldn't die.
I saw both their faces. Smiling, then turning away. I was losing my life,
and I saw them walking away.
"I love you Beau. I love you Wade." I whispered, then the
coldness overtook me and I fell into the abyss.
***********
I woke up, parched and hungry, in a hospital. My cousins, Santiago and
Luis, sat to my right. In chairs all around the bed, my tias, tios, and
primos (that's aunts, uncles, and cousins for non Spanish speakers). They
talked among themselves in Spanish. Though I did not learn the language
properly, I did understand it. They talked about Mexican soap.operas,
soccer, football, the pope... Until Luis noticed my eyes scanning the room.
"He's awake!" Luis called. Everybody turned their head to me
and rushed to my side. My mother fought through the horde and took my hand.
In between her sobs, I heard her say "I love you"over and over. Soon a
nurse came in and got me glass after glass of water. I quenched my thirst
and was able to speak.
I learned that I had been in the hospital for over a month in a coma. I had
lost a lot of blood after my suicide attempt. It was a miracle that I
hadn't died. But was I glad for that miracle? I don't know.
It was another week before I was discharged. Mama wanted to pull me out of
school so she could homeschool me. I refused. I still wanted to attend
public school. Then, I could get away from mama's smothering.
When I finally got back to school I had a lot of work to make up. I spent
every lunch for the next month doing work. With my work caught up, my life
seemed back to normal. Except for my lack of friends. My cousins who also
went to my school forced me to hang out with them. We hadn't really hung
out before, but I guess they had some guilt about my suicide attempt. I
mostly stayed quiet. And despite my protests, they got me to go the mall
after school one day. It was "primos only", meaning none of their friends
were coming. Luis drove, Santiago in shot gun. I sat next to Monica in the
back, who eagerly talked about... Well, everything. I stared into space as
she pulled me along into the food court and sat me down. Monica tried to
engage me in conversation, but I gave one worded answers until she got the
hint and stopped bugging me. I know they were trying to help, but I didn't
want their help. I still wanted to die. My eyes wandered around until they
landed on to Darren, frantically waving his arm at me. I waved back, which
did not go unnoticed by Monica, and consequentially, Santiago and a Luis.
Darren quickly made his way over to our table. I saw who he was with, and
my heart sank. Wade, Sam, and Terry followed at his heels. All three looked
at me with a mass of emotions. I bet they were curious about my month long
disappearance from school, but I wouldn't tell if questioned. Sam might
feel guilty and try to be my friend once more, but the last thing I wanted
was a friend born of guilty feelings.
"Hi Aiden!" Darren said happily. Was he glad to see
me? We never really talked before, but I thought it would be rude to ignore
him.
"Uh, Hi Darren." I replied. Keep it short Aiden, the
sooner he leaves, the sooner the trio of ex's leaves. He did inquire about
my month long absence. Luis quickly made up a lie: There were some family
issues. He bought it. I don't want to say he was dumb, but he certainly
wasn't the sharpest razor in my drawer. Wade, Sam, and Terry shifted around
uncomfortably. They stood next to Luis. He spoke up, pointing to Wade,
"This is your ex?"
I nodded yes. Wade glared at me.
"So you're available?" Darren asked hopefully. Before I
could answer, Santiago said, "He is. But if you hurt our cousin like this
fool," he pointed to Wade, "We'll break you."
Darren looked at them with fear in his eyes. "He's kidding, Darren." He
wasn't.
"So," Darren began, changing the subject. "You're taking
French right?" I nodded.
"Could you maybe help me with some of the homework? I don't
get it at all. Maybe you could come to my house later...?"
I was about to make an excuse when Monica intervened, "He would LOVE to go!
We came here to grab a bite but I'm sure you guys could go afterwards."
"Great!" Darren said ecstatically. He produced a marker and
took my arm, to write his number. Before I could pull away, he lifted the
sleeve and saw the long, deep scars that marred the underside of my arm.
Everybody except my cousins gasped.
Darren shakily scrawled his number . He knelt down and hugged me.
"I'm here for you," he whispered in my ear before
walking away. Wade looked at me. He bit his lip and opened his mouth, then
closed it again. He too walked away. Sam and Terry walked away without
looking at me.
*********
(3Rd person pov)
Gathered around a table in the food court, Aiden's ex friends
and Darren discussed the "Aiden Issue".
"What the hell was that?" Wade angrily asked Darren.
"What do you mean?" Darren replied.
"Trying to put the moves onto my ex!"
"But... You're not together anymore. And you always say you
don't care about him so I don't understand-"
"Never mind!" Wade snapped. Darren sunk a little lower in
his seat.
"He tried to kill himself...." Sam began. "because of us."
"I feel bad." Terry said. "We should've treated him better."
"He fucked Beau." Wade added with contempt.
"Well, do really know that **for sure**?" Sam asked. "I
mean, did you see them naked or was it just a kiss?"
"I saw them kissing."
"But did you see them fucking?"
"No," admitted Wade.
Then Sam turned to Darren.
"You,"she said. "When you see Aiden later, pump him for as
much info as possible!"
Darren nodded vigorously. "Yes ma'am!"
Just then, Darren got a text from Aiden, ready to go.
