CHAPTER 1 - First encounter

Daniel was a typical middle-class high-school student, self-assured,
cheerful, a little unconventional and a little conformist, crafty but
likeable. He dressed in a casual, sporty kind of way, almost always in
designer clothes. Necked by all the girls, he was sought out by his
fellows for his humour and his generosity. A boy conscious of being
attractive but not vain, with a lean and slender body, and that
delicious physique half way between youth and maturity.

He also was conscious of the glances, sometimes admiring, sometimes
lustful, sometimes shy, sometimes brazen that he often drew from
passers-by, especially men. He would tease and provoke them with his
look, somewhere between shy and impudent, and with studied poses of his
body, now languid, now erotic. He usually wore boxers and soft, floating
trousers, tops often with padded shoulders that covered and yet at the
same time highlighted his physique. When he liked a man who looked at
him, and his member swelled free under his clothes, making them tent out
and drawing lustful glances by giving away his arousal, he would amuse
himself by assuming poses that would show off his youthful turgidity
even better.

Daniel liked to be looked at, admired, desired by men, because he had
known for a couple of years now that he was gay. During this time he had
already had some adventures. The first with Pietro, one of his first
year classmates, at whose house they moved from studying Latin to
comparative anatomy. Then the one with a square-jawed American soldier
whom he had picked up beneath the trees of Sant'Angelo Gate where, to
Daniel's amazement, the handsome hunk had offered himself to him, thus
allowing the boy to savour his first penetration. The one with a
middle-aged man, but not at all bad, and with a medium-sized member, who
took Daniel's cherry, standing behind the last row of seats in the
deserted balcony of the village cinema, just under the projection port,
while the majestic images of "The Ten Commandments" flickered on the
screen. And then the dark-skinned Tunisian student who had furtively
taken him back to his small room in the University halls of residence
and with whom the anticipated quick fuck had become a veritable
two-handed orgy.

Then Pietro, who was still his classmate, and with whom he would renew
his erotic encounters from time to time, started going to 'Equivoco',
the only gay club in town; in reality a mixed disco, you could go there
without risk of automatically being labelled as definitely gay. In a
small town where everybody knew everybody else, that was something that
could be embarrassing at the very least.

He was in his third year when he first met Giovanni there, at Equivoco.
He saw him dancing on the floor, just two paces away from him. He felt
at once attracted, or rather fascinated, by the sensual body wearing a
light blue suit, classic yet just a little bit shabby, the regimental
tie with green and blue stripes casually loosened, his gold-rimmed
glasses, his hair a little ruffled, his face absorbed in the dance, lips
slightly parted revealing a glimpse of a perfect row of pure white
teeth.

Daniel never lost sight of him, even for a moment. When Giovanni left
the floor and went to sit down, Daniel followed him, intending to sit
near him and buttonhole him with the usual sort of line like 'Have you
got a light?' or 'Excuse me, do you have the time?'. But Giovanni sat
down with a blonde girl and another couple and started talking with his
friends.

There was nothing Daniel could do except sit opposite Giovanni, so he
was at least able to look at him. Now and then Giovanni would look in
his direction, but with a completely indifferent air, continuing to chat
with the blonde girl and the other two friends. More out of habit than
design, Daniel settled himself better in the low armchair, spreading his
legs a little so his erection showed. Giovanni looked at him and must
have noticed, though his eyes betrayed not the slightest reaction, he
remained indifferent.

Daniel rested his hand languidly near his basket, drawing attention to
it. Giovanni's eyes fell on it a couple of times, but without showing
any particular interest. Now Daniel was determined to seduce him, and
lost all inhibitions. His hand moved slightly, slowly smoothing the
bulge in his trousers, staring into Giovanni's eyes. The young man
settled in his seat and opened his legs for a moment; now Daniel could
see the provocative bulge under his fly.

But Giovanni gave no hint that he was interested in him. Daniel was
seething - now his desire for this beautiful, unknown man was becoming
violent. Pietro came and sat alongside him.

He noticed his friend's glances and whispered: "You've got no chance
with that one..."

"Do you know who he is?"

"Sure, everyone knows him! That's Giovanni Benedetti."

"The industrialist Benedetti?" Daniel asked in amazement.

"That's right - him. And the blonde is his girlfriend, one of the
Ferruzzi nieces, they say. So - nothing doing there, my friend."

"Fucking hell! He must be loaded. You wouldn't think so, to look at his
clothes..."

"You should just see his Ferrari out there!"

"And what does he do? Does he work with his father?"

"No, he's in his second year of law. He's taking his time, but then
there's always Daddy to make sure he doesn't go short for anything."

"Anyway, he's a real heart-throb, this Giovanni... I'm ready to fuck him
right here on the dance floor, he's turning me on so much!"

Pietro laughed and handed him his glass of whisky. "Drink up and forget
him, sister! All the sisters in here would like to get fucked on the
dance floor, if only he was up for it."

Normally, Daniel was annoyed when Pietro addressed him in the feminine,
but this time he didn't care. His whole attention was focussed on the
beautiful man.

After a while, Giovanni looked at his watch, said goodbye to his friends
and left with the blonde, his hand resting lightly around her waist,
without throwing so much as a glance in poor Daniel's direction.

Pietro slapped him on the thigh: "Get him out of your head, my friend,
listen to me! He belongs to a protected species, the 'keep your hands
off' sort." Then, looking between Daniel's legs, he added mischievously:
"Send the lift back down to the ground floor. Who knows but somebody
else might want to take the lift up, if you stopped displaying the
engaged signal."

Daniel went back home that night in a daze, his head full of the image
of Giovanni. He beat off dreaming of doing wild things with the
beautiful university student. No man had ever fascinated him so much.

The following Saturday when he went to Equivoco, he looked around for
the beautiful Giovanni. He scrutinised every person entering the disco,
but there was not even the shadow of the beautiful man of his dreams.
Pietro introduced him to a lad from Urbino, passing through Perugia. His
name was Renzo, he was a first year student at Bologna university. They
chatted, he was a pleasant enough chap.

They danced together, but Daniel never stopped looking around, hoping
that Giovanni would appear.

Around closing time, Renzo invited him back to his hotel room. Daniel
didn't have that much time before curfew, but accepted. They made love
almost in a hurry, but it was enjoyable. Renzo was skilled - after
taking it in turns fucking each, but without cumming, they ended with a
passionate and greedy sixty-nine. Daniel got back home just in time to
avoid his father's scolding.

He hit his bed thinking of the beautiful Giovanni, and fell asleep
dreaming of having better luck next Saturday.

The following Saturday, when he entered Equivoco, he had almost put the
beautiful university student out of his mind. He danced for a while,
chatted with his friends, then went to sit in a corner, scanning the
disco with his eyes and enjoying the sight of two or three nice guys
swaying on the dance floor.

A shadow, a voice: "Sorry..."

He pulled back his outstretched legs that were blocking the gangway, and
looked at the guy with glass in hand who wanted to pass. His heart leapt
in his chest and stopped. It was Giovanni.

The young man murmured "Thank you" with a hint of a smile and passed in
front of him, going to sit a bit further along, in a seat at
right-angles to his own. Just three empty seats separated them. And this
time, at least for the moment, Giovanni was alone.

Daniel wanted to get up and go and sit in the empty seat next to
Giovanni, to try to buttonhole him, but a force like a powerful hand
kept him nailed to his seat. His mind was in turmoil.

"What if I was to go over there, sit down beside him and say: 'How d'you
do, I'm Daniel'... Or: 'May I sit here? Are you waiting for
somebody?'... No, I'll ask him 'Have you got a light?'... Give me a
break..." but he didn't move, just carried on watching him. Giovanni
sipped his drink from time to time and looked at the dance floor, but
never in his direction.

"So I'll just go up to him and say 'D'you know that you are
beautiful?'... or perhaps I could say 'Have you come to dance?'."
Daniel's thoughts were in confusion, but still he couldn't bring himself
to make his approach.

Giovanni moved a little, as if trying to get more comfortable, and his
hand passed fleetingly between his legs, as if to adjust his obviously
bulging basket, which was now visible.

Still without looking at Daniel, who however had eyes for no-one but
him, Giovanni started unconsciously tapping his foot to the beat of the
deafening disco music. He took off his dark blue jacket, loosened his
purple tie and took another drink. Daniel thought he looked even more
sensual in his shirtsleeves.

The jacket slipped to the floor, Giovanni didn't seem to notice.

Daniel stood up, rescued the jacket from the floor and handed it to him:
"Your jacket... fell on the floor."

The young man turned towards him, looked him directly in the eyes and,
smiling, said: "Ah, thank you..." as he took the jacket. Instead of
putting it back on the seat next to him, he hung it over the back of his
seat. Then, just as Daniel, torn, was about to go back to his own seat,
the young man looked at him again and said: "You're welcome to sit
here..."

He nodded in excited assent and sat down next to him.

"My name is Giovanni..." he said, without offering his hand.

"I... I'm Daniel." he replied, almost stammering.

Giovanni seemed absorbed again in the music, listening and watching the
dancers on the floor. Daniel was happy to be so near him at last, though
he missed being able to look at him freely. Now he was only able to
snatch furtive glimpses of the bulge between his legs.

Suddenly Giovanni asked him: "Do you come here often?"

"Fairly; almost every Saturday... You?"

"Me? Not all that often... and I usually prefer Thursdays, it's less
crowded. Yes, I saw you here... two weeks ago." he went on with apparent
indifference, still watching the people dancing.

"Do you... like watching the people dancing?"

"Sometimes. A body dancing often makes an attractive sight. Don't you
think?"

"Yes..." Daniel answered noncommittally, but then added: "... especially
if it's a good body and moves in the right way."

He wanted to say 'an attractive guy' but he lacked the courage.

"Sure." was his simple reply. For a while they were silent. Then
Giovanni asked him: "Are you here alone?"

"I did come with some friends, but once we get here, it's every man for
himself..."

Giovanni nodded: "So much the better, at least that way you can meet
other people. I don't like it when you're out with other people and
always stick together. There are other times for being together with
friends, it's crazy in a disco."

"Do you have many... friends?"

"Real friends, no. But just 'friends', yes; perhaps too many."

Daniel wanted to tell him 'I would so much like to become your friend...
a very close friend...' but he couldn't get the words out.

"Come to the bar and let me get you a drink." Giovanni said after a
while, looking at his empty glass.

Daniel followed him, his blood surging with desire. My God, what a
delicious little ass! he thought on the way to the bar.

Leaning against the counter, Giovanni asked him: "Alcoholic - or soft?"

"Soft, thank you, I'd better. I've already had one whisky."

"Can't you take alcohol?"

"No... I don't know... But I don't want to find out. When you drink too
much, you risk losing your self-control..."

Giovanni smiled: "But at times... it could be nice to lose your
self-control, don't you think?"

"It depends. You might do or say something that you would regret
afterwards."

Giovanni nodded in agreement, but added: "We do that sometimes when
we're sober too. Wrong moves, I mean. Who knows why we're such
complicated creatures? I think we need the courage to live more
spontaneously. To be able to say to a friend 'stop pissing me off now, I
want to be alone for a while!'. Or to a stranger, 'I'd like to get to
know you, you seem an interesting guy'... But instead... We really are
too complicated, we wander around like idiots amongst rules and social
conventions even when we think we're being nonconformist..."

Daniel thought 'is he giving me a message?' but he'd fallen silent
again, wasn't looking at him in a special way, didn't 'casually' brush
him, nothing at all. Perhaps he just wanted to talk.

"Do you have a girlfriend?" Daniel asked at one point, and instantly
regretted what was perhaps too personal a question.

Giovanni shrugged: "Yes, I have a sort of girlfriend. But nothing
serious, nothing really... intimate, I mean. Some... petting at times.
That's all."

Daniel felt discouraged. Stupidly, he'd been hoping for a no. "Is she
the blonde who was with you Saturday before last?"

"Yes, her name is Candida, which means 'pure and innocent', though she
isn't either..." he concluded with a sneer. Daniel felt a pang of
jealousy.

"Are you a student?" Giovanni asked him.

"Yes, fourth year of high-school."

"Ah, I'm in my second year of law at the university. Hobbies?"

"Well... anything manual..."

"Manual? Like what?"

Daniel wanted to answer 'touching you all over!' but said:
"Model-making. Making things with my hands."

"Model railways?"

"No, building things from different materials, wood, plaster, cardboard,
metal... I'm making a pendulum clock, with wooden gears, like the
ancient ones."

"A copy?"

"No, I designed it myself, based on mechanisms from the 14th century."

"That must be interesting!" Giovanni said, adding: "And you must have to
be skilled to do something that complex."

"I don't know yet if it'll really work. And I don't think it'll be all
that accurate anyway. But I'm having fun."

"Well, that's the important thing, to be able to amuse yourself." the
young man said confidently.

Daniel thought 'wouldn't I just like to amuse myself with you!' instead
he asked: "And you? Do you have hobbies?"

"I'm interested in ornithology..."

"I like birds!" Daniel said and bit his tongue. As boys they always
referred to the cock as 'the bird'.

But Giovanni simply answered: "Yes, me too, very much. I have joined the
LIPU, the WWF and the EBWA..."

Daniel nodded, but mentally he was asking himself what Giovanni's 'bird'
was like, the firmness of which was evident under his fly, and towards
which he threw the occasional glance.

"What time do you have to be home?" Giovanni asked him.

Daniel looked at his watch: "Not just yet, but soon. If I'm not in by
two o'clock, my father nags me to death with his telling off. I can't
wait till I come of age."

"It doesn't change very much, if you're still dependent on them for your
money..." Giovanni commented. "But with all my chattering, I haven't
even left you time for any dancing..."

"No problem. I'm enjoying myself here with you, chatting."

"Me too. You're a nice chap. Do you live far from here?"

"At San Gerolamo Gate. You?"

"At Monte Ripido. Are you walking home?"

"Yes, it's not that far."

"If you want I can give you a lift, so we could stay a few minutes
longer."

"Well... thanks. But you live in the opposite direction..."

"I can go home whenever I like. I'm in no hurry. And I like talking with
you."

Yes, talking, just talking, Daniel thought, but he accepted. They went
back to sit down, talked a little more, then Giovanni looked at his
watch and said: "We'd best go, or you'll be late. Is your father really
that awful?"

"Only in some things. But time is one of the things he cares most about.
It's an obsession. He controls me a bit more than I like - to him I'm
still a fourteen- year-old boy!"

"All parents are a bit like that, aren't they? Either they're breathing
down your neck all the time and almost don't allow you to breathe, or
they don't give a damn about you at all. My parents... I'd like them to
be a little more... present. But we can get used to everything. And
sooner or later, I will be leading my life anyway. As soon as I finish
at university and have a salary of my own."

They went out, took Giovanni's light blue Ferrari who, driving without
hurry, accompanied him to San Gerolamo Gate, passing outside the walls.

"Here, this is my house. We're there."

"Still only ten two. We can stay here for six or seven minutes, can't
we?" Giovanni suggested, switching off the lights and engine.

The street lamps shone into the open-topped car.

"Can we see each other next Saturday?"

"I'd like that very much, Giovanni."

"There in the disco? About ten o'clock?"

"Yes, all right." Daniel answered, though he'd been hoping for a date in
a more private place.

"I've spent a lovely evening with you, Daniel. Thank you."

"Thank you. Are you going home to bed now?"

"Perhaps. Tomorrow I have to go with my brother to Gubbio. It's the
'Benedizione dei Ceri' there tomorrow."

"Isn't that on May the fifteenth?"

"No, that's the day of the Race. My father's sponsored one of the big
candles, just like he's been doing for years. He's abroad, so my brother
and I have to go to represent him. Two sons in exchange for one father,
that's the current exchange rate. It will be a deadly bore, but..."

"Is your girlfriend going too?" Daniel asked with a hint of jealousy.

"No, not her. She's in Ravenna at the moment."

"Are you missing her?" Daniel asked, scanning his expression.

"No. She's really of more interest to my father than to me. She has lots
of money..."

"I have to go now, Giovanni..."

"Yes, it's a pity. I'm glad I met you. See you again next Saturday,
then."

They shook hands. It was the first physical contact between them, and
the young man's firm, warm grip provoked in Daniel an intense shiver of
pleasure. And an instant hard-on.

The following Monday, after school, when Daniel told Pietro he had
finally met Giovanni, and of their long chat, his friend said to him,
teasingly: "He who talks too much, doesn't fuck! And anyway he's
irredeemably straight. With him the most intimacy you can hope for is
afternoon tea and cakes at five o'clock..."

"Anyway, it's nice just talking to him and being near him."

"I think you're a bit of a masochist, Daniel! How can you enjoy being
around someone who turns you on, and yet you will never be able to have?
What am I saying, 'to have' - just so much as to touch! To see him
naked, at least... No, nothing. And you like being around him! It would
take someone brighter than me to understand you!"

"It's better than nothing, and then... 'spes ultima dea' isn't it?"

"Yes, and 'he who lives hoping, dies shitting'!"

"It's singing, the proverb says 'singing'!" Daniel retorted laughing.

"So sing then, and forget your cares!" his friend answered with another
proverb, adding: "Say, d'you know why I wasn't at Equivoco on Saturday?"

"No, actually. Why?"

"Do you remember that hunk wearing the white overalls and salmon shirt?
The one I was with at the bar while you were drooling over your
beautiful Giovanni?"

"Yes, two weeks ago. But you told me he had another date and that there
was nothing doing, didn't you?"

"Well, I was wrong. This Saturday we met outside Equivoco and he says to
me: 'instead of paying the entrance here, why don't we pop over to my
place? I've got good music, good drinks and there's nobody to bother us.
No sooner said than done; I hadn't even started my drink before we were
both naked on his carpet. Until one o' clock, for three hours!"

"Yeh, and thirteen orgasms one after the other, just like in the porno
movies!" Daniel commented sarcastically.

"Not thirteen. Anyway I've got nothing to complain about..."

"And did he screw you, or you did screw him, or did you take it in
turns?"

"That's not the sort of thing you should ask a lady!" Pietro answered,
and they both laughed.

"But you're no lady, you're a dreadful flirt! So...?"

"We took it in turns. Satisfied?"

"If I'd been there too, perhaps I might have been more satisfied..."

"Anyway we're seeing each other again this week. He lives alone, so..."

"Whereabouts does he live? What's his name?"

"In Della Viola Street, over Simondi's the stationery shop. And his name
is Novio."

"Novio? What kind of a name is that!? Novio, dear... I'd feel silly just
saying it."

"No, you'd feel turned on, if you could just see him naked."

"And what do you say to him: 'Do you want to fuck now-io or later-io?'"
Daniel laughed.

"Now - and later; and again, I can assure you..." his friend smiled
archly.
