Chapter 49

Dewayne heard Jacob come back into the room, get dressed and then leave
again. He actually felt Jacob when he crawled out of bed earlier in the
morning. Dewayne can't stop worrying about Jacob. He knows one thing is for
sure, Jacob needs to go checked out. These sleepless nights can't continue.

Just as Dewayne started to doze off again, he herd the bedroom door open
and close again. Dewayne knows that Jacob just walked in. A few minutes
later, Dewayne felt Jacob crawling into bed.

Dewayne laid there pretending to be asleep when he felt Jacob's hand
grabbing for his arm. He let Jacob pull his arm over Jacob's side and
around his chest. Jacob held on tight to Dewayne's hand as he fell to
sleep. Shortly after hearing Jacob softly snoring, Dewayne relaxed enough
to fall back to sleep as well.

Neither of the boys woke up until late morning. Dewayne woke up first,
crawled out of bed and did his morning business. As he walked back to the
bed, he saw Jacob stretching his arms out, waking up. Dewayne smiled at his
boyfriend as he rubbed his eyes.

"Hey you, sleepy, it is time to get up and grab some breakfast before it's
gone. But I need a favor from you first Jacob. Please do not get mad with
me, but I have fallen so hard for you, I want to grow old with you."

"Go for it; feel free to say whatever is on your mind. I think I know what
you are going to talk with me, but I am not going to assume." Jacob said as
he pulled himself and leaned against the back board of the bed.

 Dewayne walked back over to the bed. He sat down on the edge of the bed,
grabbing hold of Jacob's hand. He reached out with his other hand and
turned Jacob's face to face him.

"I know you have not been sleeping well for a while now. I feel it when you
get out of bed and get back in. I thought long and hard about this, and I
came to a conclusion on what I should do.

You are not feeling well at all. You have not been feeling good for a while
now. After what Al told us, we all have been walking around the elephant in
the room. I can't walk around it anymore. I am going to go at it head on.

I love you Jacob and like I said. I want to spend the rest of my life with
you. That doesn't mean that time should be short. We need to grow old,
wrinkly and grey together." Dewayne rubbed Jacob's hair when he said grey,
causing Jacob to laugh.

"When you are hurting Jacob, I am hurting with you. I wasn't around when
you went through hell during your freshmen year, but I am here now. I WILL
NOT LOSE YOU NOW THAT I HAVE YOU IN MY LIFE. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?" Jacob
looked Dewayne and nodded his head up in down in agreement.

"You will go in today to the hospital and get the tests that your doctor
wants to run on you. More than likely you are worrying for nothing, but it
is best to find out. But if it does come out to be bad news, we will go
through it together. You will make it out of it and we are going to be on
this earth for decades to come."

Dewayne grabbed a hold of Jacob as he broke down. They sat on the bed
holding onto each other as tight as they could. They almost shut off the
flow of blood in each others body. Jacob pulled away from Dewayne, wiping
away the tears from his face.

"I will call Dr. Whitmore and set it up. I love you to Dewayne and I want
to grow old with you too. As long as I have you and my family at my side, I
will make it."

They hugged each other again before taking a shower and getting
dressed. Jacob called Dr. Whitmore to set up the test for three in the
afternoon. Dr. Whitmore kept telling Jacob he is doing the right thing and
he promised Jacob that he will make it out again.

After getting off the phone, Jacob and Dewayne walked down to grab
something to drink. Dewayne is going to get something to eat, but Jacob
can't because his stomach has to be empty for the test later today.

Al looked at Jacob as he and Dewayne walked into the kitchen. "Good morning
to you two! I hope you had a good night's sleep. You will notice a weird
black box connected to the telephone. It is for the monitoring devices on
Alex and Matt."

"Wow that was fast grandpa! They really want to make sure they have their
claws in poor Alex and Matt." Jacob sat at the table with his orange juice.

"Yeah, but I am glad they did get it done while I was off. I hate to leave
the office when I am the only one there right now. I can't wait until you
graduate from college Jacob and take over the business. That way I can do
old people stuff like play golf or just travel, wearing those weird shorts
with inappropriate socks the old people seem to like wearing."

Everyone started laughing. Jacob couldn't see his grandfather retiring. He
loves to work and help out others. Dewayne joined Jacob and his grandfather
at the table with a plate of food that Franseca just cooked for him.

"Jacob what do you want me to fix you something to eat?" Franseca walked
over to fill Jacob's cup with orange juice.

"Nothing Franseca, I can't eat anything."  Al and Franseca looked at
Jacob. "Dewayne and I had a talk before coming down here. I have been hard
headed and stupid about the news I got the other day from Dr. Whitmore. I
set up an appointment with Dr. Whitmore at three to run the test he wants
to run on me."

Al almost fell out of his seat when he heard Jacob. He got up and patted
Dewayne on the shoulder as he walked over to Jacob. Al knelt down in front
of Jacob as he started to talk with him.

"I am glad that you decided to go in today. You have made this old man so
happy. No matter what happens, you have all of us to help you through this,
Jacob. You will not go through it alone like last time."

 Al hugged Jacob as he got up from his knees. He walked over to the phone
and called Gloria and Andy Sr. to let them know about the appointment. He
then got off the phone and walked out to tell the others in the house.

The rest of the morning and early afternoon, Jacob lazed around the
house. As the hour approached, Jacob got more and more nervous. Dewayne
noticed that Jacob is getting nervous, so he stayed glued to Jacob.

At two, everyone started to get ready to head out to the hospital. Jacob
felt that he didn't really need to get dressed, so he just put on a
jacket. The jeans, t-shirt and running shoes he put on in the morning were
fine.

Jacob pulled out the truck that way they don't have to take more than two
vehicles. Those that didn't fit in the truck drove with Al to the
hospital. They parked and walked in to find Gloria, Andy Sr. and Marie
waiting for them.

Gloria walked over to Jacob and hugged him, and then Andy and Marie. Once
Marie let go of Jacob, they got onto the elevator. No one said a word on
the ride up. The door opened and everyone walked off.

As they walked off the elevator, Jacob went to check in and everyone else
went to take a seat.  Dr. Whitmore walked out as Jacob walked up to the
nurse's station. Jacob turned and looked at Dr. Whitmore.

"Jacob my boy, it is really good to see you! I hope you had a great New
Year celebration. I promise you that I will make this as quick as
possible. Before you leave today, we will have answers, I promise."

Before Jacob could answer Dr. Whitmore, the entire family walked
up. Dr. Whitmore took a couple steps back seeing all them walking up. He
looked around the group seeing familiar faces and new faces in the
group. He didn't see Joey anywhere.

"Well, I would like to take Jacob back and get this going. I will send out
one of my staff to keep you all informed with what is going on. Just as I
was telling Jacob before you guys walked up. We will have the answer about
what is causing Jacob's pain before he leaves the hospital today."

"Dr. Whitmore he is not going to have to stay over night, am I correct on
that?" Al spoke up as Dr. Whitmore started walking to the back.

"I don't want to answer that question yet. I am hoping whatever is going on
is minor. If it is, we can more than likely treat as an out patient. If
Jacob's cancer has returned, depending how bad it is, we can treat it as
out patient as well. That question can't be answered until we run the test
and see what the results are, Al."

"Dr, Whitmore I know I have not been involved in my son's illness, but what
is it that you think it is? You are a doctor and you have been treating me
son from the beginning. I'd guess you have to have some kind of clue on
what it is."

"Gloria, I know you are worried, I know all of you are worried. It is best
not to jump to conclusions here. Two years ago, Jacob's body was stripped
down and rebuilt back up. It could be something simple or something bad
like I have said. I won't guess at what it is. I want to run the tests and
then I will answer all the questions you have. Sit tight and I or another
one of my staff members will be with you."

Everyone just stood there watching Jacob walk back with Dr. Whitmore. They
made their way back to the seats where they were before Dr. Whitmore came
out. Just like the ride up on the elevator, no one said a word to each
other. They just sat there in silence.

Jacob walked into a room small room with just a bed and a chair. He turned
around to look at Dr. Whitmore. Jacob is starting to think this is not such
a good idea. Maybe he should just come back another time, but not today.

Dr. Whitmore noticed that Jacob is starting to get really nervous. "Jacob,
please don't get nervous. I know you as if you were my son. In fact I feel
so close to you, I feel as if you are my son. I will not let anything go
wrong here today, I promise.

Please change into the hospital clothes and put your clothes here on the
chair. Several nurses will be in here in a few minutes to start an IV. Once
that happens, I will start my test. All this will be over in a few hours."
Dr. Whitmore patted Jacob on the shoulder as he walked out of the room to
give him privacy to change.

Almost the minute Jacob went with Dr. Whitmore, Dewayne started to pace up
and down the hallway. He wants to go back and be at Jacob's side, but they
are not allowing him. The only thing he knew to do is just walk up and down
the hall.

"Dad, how did you get Jacob to come in for tests? He seemed to be set on
not coming in no matter what any of us said. You always work miracles with
anything you set your mind to." Gloria whispered to Al as she sat in the
chair next to him.

"I didn't say anything to him. That young kid over there..." Al pointed to
Dewayne walking up and down the hallway. "He talked with Jacob this morning
and got him to come in. That's the man you need to be thanking, not me!"

Gloria looked at Dewayne as he walked over to the window. She has not
really given the new guy in her son's life a chance. She really never gave
Joey a chance either. Gloria always thought if she could get rid of the
guys around her son, he might turn to girls. Gloria got up and walked over
to Dewayne.

"Dewayne, I know I have been really ugly with you since I met you. Don't
ask me why I do the things I do, because I don't even know the answer to
that question. You have to trust me that you are not the only one I have
treated badly.

I was speaking with my father. He told me that you are the one I need to
thank for getting Jacob in here for the tests. Thank you so much for doing
that, Dewayne. You may think of me as a bitch, but I do really care and
love my son."

Dewayne turned to face Gloria. The look in her face is sincere and
loving. A look that Dewayne has never seen in her face before! For the
first time he is seeing what Jacob has been telling him. His mother is a
loving and caring person underneath it all.

"Ma'am I love your son with all that I am and want to be with him. Not for
months, or a year or two. I want to be with for as long as I am on this
earth. He brings me, a person I try to hide, to the surface. You are
welcome, but I did it to have him for the rest of my life."

Gloria couldn't believe how blunt Dewayne is. She actually likes the back
bone in him unlike Joey who seemed to always be hiding behind her
son. Jacob needs an equal by his side, not a person that will suck the life
out of her son.

Just as Gloria started to walk away, Dewayne stopped her. "By the way
ma'am, you are not a bitch. Jacob has told me many times that you care for
him and love him. I saw that care in your eyes earlier. Although I don't
agree with what you've done, you are not a bitch. You just don't know how
to handle the idea of having a gay son, just like my parents.

I guess what I am trying to say, I am here to stay. I am no Joey that will
move out in the middle of the night. I will not be run off either. We have
to find a way to get along. You mean too much to Jacob, and so that means
you mean a lot to me."

Gloria just nodded her head. She dared not speak so she turned and instead
if sitting back down, she went to the bathroom. Gloria doesn't want anyone
to see her crying. As she walked into the bathroom, she realized that she
has to take her son as he is. There is nothing she can do to change him to
walk down another path.

Two hours had passed and still no update. Al finally got tired of waiting
so he got up and walked over to the nurse. She had no idea about anything
going with Jacob. She informed Al that Dr. Whitmore brought his own staff
in to run the tests and that is why she has no idea what is going on with
Jacob.

Al didn't like the answer, but had to take it. He walked back to his
seat. As more time passed, he started getting more and more nervous. Once
it passed the three hour mark, Al got tired of waiting for an update.

He got up and had no plans of being stopped. He is going to walk to the
back no matter who tries to stop him. Just as he reached the double doors,
Dr. Whitmore walked out with several of his staff members.

"Al, I am sorry for taking so long. I needed to run several tests several
times to be for sure what I was seeing. Let's go over to the waiting room
where I can tell all of you what the test is telling me. I don't want to
repeat myself."

Al nodded with an angry look on his face. This is the first time that
Dr. Whitmore had done this to him and before Dr. Whitmore leaves Al is
going to make sure he understands that it will be the last time. If
Dr. Whitmore doesn't like it, Al will find another doctor for his grandson
that will respect him.

They reached the others in the waiting room. Chase jabbed Andy Jr. to wake
up. David did the same thing to Tom. Jeremy is in the corner but really
unaware what is going on. He is in his own little world coloring in his
coloring books. Once everyone woke up and got into a group, Dr. Whitmore
started to talk with them.

"First let me apologize to each and everyone of you. Every time I was about
to send out a staff member to talk with you, Jacob stopped me. He didn't
want any news to be given unless it is the news about what is wrong with
him. He is my patient and I have to respect Jacob's requests when he makes
them.

Now let me tell you what we found. To put you all at ease, Jacob's cancer
isn't back." Almost all at once you could hear everyone take a breath for
the first time since Dr. Whitmore walked out to speak with them.

"Although his cancer isn't back, he is sick." Now the breath of relief
vanished and fear set in across everyone's face again. "As you all know
that Jacob had kidney stones the last time he came in to the hospital. This
time it is worse then that.

Jacob kidneys have almost completely shut down. That is why he has been
having the pains on his sides. He finally told me that he hasn't been
urinating that much, and when he does his urine is cloudy, dark yellow and
at times it smells.

He just finished a dialysis treatment in hopes of getting his kidneys going
again. If that doesn't work, I will need to get him a kidney. I would like
to get him both, but a person can live their life normally with just one
good, properly functioning kidney."

"Wait a minute Dr. Whitmore, you are telling us that Jacob is... I really
don't know what you are telling us Dr. Whitmore. All I know is that he is
sick again." Al sat down in the nearest seat to him.

"Look, I know this is lot of information, but it is still good news to a
point. He doesn't have to fight any battle with cancer. This is fixable and
it has become so common. Once a person's kidneys are either kick started
with dialysis or transplanted, they live a regular life as long as they
take their medications."

"Jacob has gone through so much already and now this. I don't know if his
body can take another surgery if it comes down to that. How much longer do
we have to stay before we can take Jacob home?" Al asked.

"Like I just said, he just finished a treatment on dialysis. We took x-rays
and blood tests to see if it worked. I am just waiting for the results. If
they come back good, he can go home in the next twenty or so minutes. If
they come back the same as the first ones I took he will have to stay in
order to get further treatment."

No one had anymore questions for Dr. Whitmore. The doctor excused himself
and headed back to look at the results of the tests and ex-rays. Al and the
others just sat back down to wait and see what is going to happen.

Not even ten minutes passed when Jacob walked out to the lobby followed by
Dr. Whitmore talking to him. Everyone got up and noticed that Jacob and
Dr. Whitmore didn't look too happy with each other.

"Wait a minute Jacob, what is going on here?" Al, Dewayne and Andy
Sr. walked in front of Jacob where he couldn't walk any further.

"Jacob wants to leave against doctors orders. The dialysis didn't work, his
kidneys are shutting down on him. I need him to stay where I can get him on
the transplant list. He needs to get a new kidney as soon as possible. He
can't leave the hospital right now."

"I am not going to be put back into this hospital. I should not have ever
agreed to come down here in the first place. If you guys get me back on the
surgery table, I know I am not walking out of here through the front doors.

I am going home and that all I am going say about that." Jacob pushed past
Al, Dewayne and Andy Sr. He walked over to the elevator to leave. "If any
of you want a ride home with me, you'd better get on this elevator or you
find another way home."

Those that drove up with Jacob walked over to the elevator except
Dewayne. Jacob didn't look back when the doors to the elevator opened. He
just got in with the others that hitched a ride with him.

"Al you need to stop Jacob and bring him back in. This is something he
needs to take seriously. His kidneys can completely shut down at any
time. When that happens, he will have only four hours to get to the
hospital. Imagine if it happens when he is asleep, he will never wake up
again."

"It took a lot to get him here. He agreed out of love to his boyfriend. Is
there any other way he can get that treatment as an out patient?"

"If Joey got him to come in, then Joey needs to talk him into coming back
again. It seems that Jacob listens to Joey. If it wasn't for Joey the last
time, Jacob might not have pulled through. I almost Jacob because Joey was
gone!

The answer to your question, there is no way I can do this out patient. His
kidneys are too far gone. I keep telling Jacob to tell me about any new
pain no matter if it seems small. If he would have told me about this pain
when he first got it, it could have been dealt with out patient."

"Dr. Whitmore it looks like you are not aware of the fact that Joey left
Jacob the day before Thanksgiving. If anything I blame that son-of-bitch
that caused this problem. If I ever get my hands on that kid, he is a dead
man." Al walked way to settle down.

"This is Dewayne, Jacob's new boyfriend. He is the one that talked Jacob
into coming in today. If there is any way to get Jacob back in, we will
find it! In the mean time, if you are unwilling to help, I will find a
doctor that will. There has to be a treatment under out patient. Once the
kidney comes available, we will have Jacob here."

Dr. Whitmore looked at Al. He sees that Al is serious about finding another
doctor. He walked over to the nurse's desk to use the phone. Dr. Whitmore
walked back over to Al and the others.

"A portable dialysis machine is going to be delivered to your house this
evening. It will be set up and they will show anyone that wants to learn
how to use it. I want to see Jacob three times a week until a kidney comes
available. If he gets worse, he will have be in patient hospital."

Everyone agreed with Dr. Whitmore and walked out. Dewayne had to ride with
Gloria and Andy Sr. in order to get home. They walked in the house and
found everyone in front of the TV except Franseca. She is in the kitchen
cooking dinner.

Dewayne walked over to Jacob and sat next to him on the couch. He wrapped
his arm around him. Dewayne pulled Jacob into him until Jacobs head rested
on his shoulder. Dewayne leaned in to whisper to Jacob.

"Thank you for going for the test today for yourself and all of us. Now
everyone doesn't have the worry that your cancer came back, but what you
have Jacob is as deadly as having cancer. None of us will rest until they
know that you are fine again.

So this is what we are going to do and I am not going to take no for answer
on this either. A portable dialysis machine is going to be delivered in the
next couple of hours. They are going to show you, me, your grandfather and
anyone else that wants to know how to use it. You will follow the
instructions right down to the last letter without a negative word.

The reason you are going to do this Jacob is because you want to live. The
reason you are going to do this is because everyone in this house wants you
around more than a couple more months. And the reason you are going to do
this is because you love me and I love you. I am asking, scratch that, I am
begging you to do it."

Jacob looked up at Dewayne and nodded his head and leaned back on Dewayne's
shoulder. The machine got delivers, set up and shown to whoever wanted to
know how to use it. They put in another IV into Jacob and left.

Gloria and Andy Sr. left after dinner leaving Marie at Jacob's because she
wants to stay the night to help out her brother. As they left, they took
Dewayne to the side and thanked him for everything he is doing for them and
Jacob.

Jacob headed up to bed shortly after his parents left. No one knows, but he
has been up since early this morning. Dewayne is the only one that knows,
but he doesn't know that Jacob went out to speak with Joey.

Dewayne started to head up, but got stopped by Al. "Dewayne you have
already done so much for my grandson. I know this is not what you thought
you were getting into, but thank you for everything. I need you to make
sure Jacob does what he is supposed to do."

"Sir, I promise to make sure Jacob does what he supposed to do. As far as
not signing up for this, you are wrong. We all get sick and when that
happens, the other in the relationship needs to be there no matter what. I
am here for the good and the bad."

Dewayne walked upstairs to the room. He walked in to find Jacob sound
asleep. Dewayne walked over to the bed and noticed that Jacob didn't get
much further than taking off his right shoe when he reached the bed. He
fell on the bed with one shoe off and the other one halfway off.

Dewayne finished taking off Jacob's other shoe. He picked him up and pulled
the covers back. Gently putting Jacob back on the bed, Dewayne started to
take off Jacob's clothes. He took off Jacob's jeans first. Dewayne then
pulled Jacob up in order to take off his shirt. Jacob started to talk in
his sleep.

"Please don't leave... Please, I promise not to get sick... Don't leave me
Dewayne..."

Dwayne gently laid Jacob back down. He kissed Jacob on the forehead. "I am
not going anywhere Jacob. You are stuck with me no matter what happens."

Before Dewayne got undressed for bed, he hooked up the dialysis
machine. Once he saw everything is working correctly, Dewayne got
undressed. He walked around the bed and crawled in. Pulling the covers over
him and Jacob, he pulled Jacob up to him. Hearing Jacob's heartbeat,
Dewayne went to sleep.

The next couple of days, Jacob hung around the house. Although Dewayne had
to go to work, he didn't want to. Reluctantly Dewayne walked out every day
and didn't stop thinking about Jacob all day. The minute he got home, he
didn't want to leave Jacob's side no matter how many times Jacob told him
that he is okay.

By Thursday, Jacob got used to using the dialysis machine. The only time he
is connected to the machine for a long period of time is when he is
sleeping. Other than that, Jacob only has to use the machine midday and in
the evening, an hour at a time.

As soon as Dewayne got home on Thursday, Jacob asked him to take a quick
shower. He explained to Dewayne that he wants to go out to dinner with
him. Just him and no one else! After dinner, Jacob continuing to explain
that maybe they will take in a movie.

Jacob felt like his normal self finally. He isn't tired, dizzy or confused
anymore. Jacob also doesn't feel in the dumps anymore. Jacob finally has
energy that he is not forcing himself to keep going.

All through dinner, Jacob and Dewayne talked about themselves. They told
each other stuff that they have not told each other yet. Nothing that they
said made the other think any differently of the other. In fact they are
taking it all in.

When they got to the theatre, they didn't hide the fact that they are
together as more than friends. They kissed each other while in line to buy
their tickets and again in the snack line. All through the movie, they held
hands and kissed each other when ever they felt the urge to do so. No one
said anything or gave ugly looks to them.

Instead of joining the others in the TV room when they got home, they went
upstairs to their room. They walked over to the bed and sat down. Jacob and
Dewayne grabbed each others hand at the same time. Jacob looked over to
Dewayne trying to read him. He finally gave up and just spoke.

"Dewayne, I am ready to move on with more than just kissing. I really want
to make love with you tonight. I have wanted to for weeks now! You make me
feel things that I thought I'd lost as the holidays began. You brought
those feelings back."

Trying to figure out what to say, Dewayne just sat there looking at
Jacob. Jacob made the first move as he started to unbutton Dewayne's
shirt. He pulled Dewayne's shirt off and threw it on the floor near the
bed.

Jacob leaned into Dewayne's chest. He gently started kissing Dewayne's
right nipple, and then moved to the left one. Jacob's not sucking on them,
but he is putting Dewayne's nipples between his teeth.

After a few minutes of playing with Dewayne's chest, Jacob moved down to
Dewayne's six pack and then to his belly button. As Jacob stuck his tongue
in and out of Dewayne's belly button, Dewayne started to moan. Dewayne
grabbed a hold of the back of Jacob's head and started running his fingers
through Jacob's hair.

Dewayne pulled Jacob up to him just as Jacob started to undo his belt. He
kissed Jacob a couple times on the lips before he flipped Jacob on his back
on the bed. No really knowing what to do, Dewayne pushed up Jacob's shirt
and t-shirt where he could try and mimic what Jacob just did to him.

Dewayne stumbled around a couple of times as he sucked on Jacob's nipple
and he accidently bit to hard! Jacob didn't say a word, he figured that
Dewayne is nervous and will unwind.

Just like Dewayne, Jacob pulled Dewayne up to him as Dewayne started to
undo his pants. He placed his hands on each side of Dewayne's face. He
pulled Dewayne down to kiss him a couple of time. After the third time,
Jacob held Dewayne's face above his.

"You are so damn hot, I can barely hold back. Don't be nervous. Just relax
and go with the flow. I am no expert on love making and trust me when I say
that. We are going to learn how to make love to one another at the same
time," Jacob told Dewayne reassuring him.

Jacob didn't wait for Dewayne to answer. He pulled Dewayne back down into a
kiss. As they kissed, Jacob fumbled around to get Dewayne's belt
undone. Once he got the belt undone, Jacob unbuttoned Dewayne's pants and
unzipped the zipper.

Dewayne stood up and let his pants fall to his ankles. He kicked his pants
off as Jacob got up to pull down his underwear. Just like his pants,

As they reached the bottom stair, Jacob noticed everyone waiting on him and
Dewayne. Even Gloria and Andy Sr. stayed over to be there to see Andy
Jr. off. Jacob just waved his hand at everyone, and walked out to the
truck.

Gloria, Andy Sr., Marie and Jeremy got into Gloria's car. Everyone else
jumped into the truck with Jacob except Toni, Alex, Alex's brothers,
Franseca and Matt. They rode with Al and Jacob's grandmother.

All the way to Fort Bliss, Andy kept teasing Jacob and Dewayne about what
he walked in on last night. After a few minutes of getting teased by Andy,
Tom and David finally jumped in. Jacob and Dewayne wondered when they are
going to jump in. They are surprised that they were able to keep their
mouths closed as long as they did.

"At least when you walked in Andy, they were covered. David and I walked in

shoulders: "By the way, you have a nice ass. I see why Jacob loves your

Jacob turned all shades of red when Tom said that. Dewayne leaned in and

Where Andy needed to report at isn't on the base. It is connected to the
base, but the entrance is off of Airport Road. They didn't have to drive on
the base to drop Andy off. Jacob, Al and Gloria pulled in to the parking
lot.

As soon as they parked, everyone got out of the vehicles they drove in. Al
pulled down Andy's bag and walked with him and the others to the front
entrance of the building. This is as far as they could go.

Everyone took turns saying their good byes and wishing Andy good luck
before heading back to the truck. The last ones to say their goodbyes to
Andy are his immediate family. Andy Sr. went first.

"I know I wasn't around when you grew up son and I have regretted that all
my life. There is nothing I can do to make up for that. I am very proud of
you Andy and no matter what you do, I will always be proud of you. You are
making my name good again and thank you for that."

Andy Sr. grabbed hold of Andy Jr. and hugged him. Andy Jr. kept his
composure as he hugged his father. Andy Sr. let go and walked back over to
the vehicles. Gloria walked up to her son and grabbed hold of him.

"You are all grown up and a man now. All the good in you isn't because of
me. You some how learned to be who you are and I am proud of you Andy, so
proud of you. I am so sorry for not being a good mother to you. I love you
Andy and I want you to come home as soon as you can."

Gloria hugged Andy and then kissed him on the forehead. "You did what you
could mom. I didn't make it easy for you. Getting involved with drugs and
drinking all the time. You did what you could and I love you so much for
that."

Gloria walked back to her car with tears rolling down her cheeks. Andy
Sr. grabbed hold of her and held her. Al walked up to Andy with Virginia at
his side. He looked into Andy's eyes. Al sees a man that fought to get out.

"You are my second oldest grandson and the first to really leave the
nest. You did well with what you had and I am proud of you. Go and do what
you need to do to get rid of the demons that you are fighting inside. Come
back to us as soon as possible. We will keep the porch light on and a plate
on the table for you."

Al and Virginia both hugged their grandson. As they broke the hug, Al
pulled out an envelope from his pants pocket and handed it to Andy. "This
is to keep you going until you get your first pay check. Call us if you
need anything else." Andy took the envelope as he nodded his head.

Andy walked over to Jeremy and hugged him. Jeremy had no idea what is going
on. He handed Andy his favorite coloring book and ran to the car with
Al. Andy took the coloring book and walked over to his sister Marie.

"I don't know what to say. I love you and I don't want you to go Andy."
Marie started crying as Andy grabbed her into a hug.

"I will be okay Marie, I will be okay. Look at the shit I did as I grew up
and I am still here. There is nothing that the Army can throw at me that
life hasn't yet. You take care and get with that nice boy Greg. You two are
great together."

Marie broke the hug and kissed Andy on the forehead before leaving. Andy
walked over to Jacob and Dewayne. Jacob went to open his mouth, but Andy
put his finger over it. He turned to look at Dewayne.

"I meant what I said last night; all kidding aside. Jacob means too much to
this family. He is the heart of this family. If he every goes, this family
will go with him. He listens to you. Please take care of my little
brother."

Andy walked over to Dewayne and hugged his brother-in-law. In his eyes he
sees Dewayne as his brother-in-law. Dwayne promised Andy that he will take
care of Jacob and walked back to the truck. Leaving just Andy and Jacob
standing there.

"You listen to me Jacob and listen well. I haven't been a good brother and
I am going to make up for that starting now. You will do whatever it takes
to get well. Stop being a kid, you are no longer one. You will stay healthy
and take care of yourself. I will not come back here under a dark cloud,
you hear me Jacob?"

"I promise to take care of myself Andy, I just..."

"Listen, I don't have that much time and a lot to tell you. Dewayne is a
keeper and you stay with him. He is not going anywhere like Joey did to
you. Don't you ever go and speak with that kid again without someone with
you." Jacob's jaw dropped to the ground.

"Yeah I heard you and followed you. It took everything in me from getting

I love you Jacob, I really do. I am so sorry what Normal and her brothers
put you through. I will never forgive myself for that. That will never

They hugged each other. Andy and Jacob broke down and started crying as
they hugged each other. As they broke the hug, Jacob pulled an envelope out
of his pocket like Al. He handed it to Andy with tears rolling down his

"You never asked for anything from me and I know you will never ask. Just
like grandpa, this is a little something to keep you going until you get
paid. If you need anything, just pick up the phone. We are all here for
you, even if you just need to talk. I love you Andy and come home as soon
as you can."

The brothers hugged one more time. Andy broke the hug, grabbed his bag and
walked in. He couldn't look back, because if he did there is no way he will
get on the bus to basic training. He walked in trying to keep the tears in,
but he failed.

Jacob walked back to the others. They actually stood at there in the
parking lot until they saw the bus leave. They waved at Andy as he waved
out the window to them. Once the bus carrying Andy drove away, everyone got
back in the vehicles and drove back home.

After getting a couple hours of sleep, Jacob got back out of bed and headed
down to speak with his grandfather. He is hoping that his grandfather
hasn't gone into work yet. Jacob found his grandfather in the kitchen
having his morning coffee.

He sat down at the table with him and looked at him. Al put down the
newspaper and looked at Jacob. He can see that there is something on his
mind, but what it is, he doesn't know. One thing is for sure, Jacob is
looking a lot better. The black around his eyes is finally gone and color
has returned to his face.

"What is going on Jacob? You look like you are about to drop a bomb on
me. Let me have it. There's nothing more you can say that will stun me."

"Where are my mom and dad at right now?"

"They are downstairs in the apartment asleep. I put them there since
Dewayne isn't sleeping down there anyway. If Dewayne isn't going to sleep
down there, he should move all his stuff into your room since he is
sleeping there anyway."

Jacob couldn't help but smile at his grandfather. "That is kind of what I
want to talk with you about. Please don't get mad with me over the first
thing I am going to tell you. Andy already let me have it and I plan not to

Al just looked at Jacob wit a confused look on his face at first. He then
promised Jacob that he will not get angry with him. Jacob told his
grandfather about the meeting he had with Joey a couple of days ago. As
Jacob told Al what they talked about, you can see the steam coming out of
Al's ears.

"Look I am glad you spoke with him. That way you can make peace with that
situation and move on. He did a lot for you and I know that's why you had a
hard time moving on. Now I hope you can move on and leave that in the
past."

"I can grandpa that is what I needed. I needed to see him face to face and
say my peace that I didn't say the day he left. Now that brings me to why I
need to talk with you. I want everything about Joey and my past in the
past.

I can't step foot in the house that we gave my mother. There are way too
many memories in that house. The biggest memory is that house belonged to
Joey's family, not mine. This house I bought with my own money, and yes we
lived in it together as a couple, but I bought it.

Joey gave me that house to pay for his part of this house. He has no plans
to move back to El Paso by the way he sounded when we talked the other
day. I want to sell that house and buy another house for my mother. I saw
the house next to Franseca's is for sale. In fact there are several houses
on this block and the other blocks for sale or in foreclosure."

"Yeah, the economy is in a down turn right now. It does this every decade
or so. People get into bills that they can't afford. This is not the time
to be selling a house because you won't get it sold without losing your
ass. There are way too many houses on the market already and prices are way
down.

You probably could get the house next to Franseca at a fraction of the
price right now.  You probably pay for that house around the amount you
paid for your truck. The banks just want to get the bad debt off their
books as quickly as possible if it's a foreclosure.

At the same time, you will probably not get what you want for the house
that Gloria lives in. This market works for those that can afford to buy,
but not for those that want to sell. You need to hold onto the Gloria's
house for now Jacob."

"So you are telling me that it is not a good idea to sell or move mom out?
Grandpa I want to get rid of everything that reminds me of Joey. That house
is a big reminder of him. I am ready finally to move on grandpa."

"You are getting what I am saying all wrong. On Monday we can go and see
what they want for the house next to Franseca. We will bring them down as
far as we can. If we both agree it is a good price, then we will buy it."

"Here is where I need your help grandpa. The house next to Franseca is in
foreclosure, so the bank put it in the city auction. That auction is going
to happen on Monday and it is open to the public. I have to go back to
school on Monday, so I will need you to go down and bid on the house."

"Even better Jacob! You are getting very smart, maybe too smart for your
own good. Having a chance to buy the house at the auction will ensure that
we get the lowest price for the house.

I planned to go to the auction on Monday anyways for some land I am
interested in. I will buy that land and the house.  We can write it off as
a business expense, that way we don't really pay much for that house when
it comes down to it."

Jacob spoke a little longer with his grandfather about it. They stopped
talking about it when Gloria and Andy walked into the kitchen. Gloria
kissed her father and Jacob good morning as she headed to get her and Andy
coffee.

As the others started to wake up, Franseca and Gloria started cooking
breakfast. It seems that Franseca and Gloria are getting a long really well
ever since their fight in the pool. They aired out their indifferences and
are now moving on.

After breakfast, Jacob and the others guys went down to the game room. They
started making plans for what to do for the day. Eventually they all agreed
to go down to Western Play Land.

They all got dressed and headed out the door. Franseca stopped Alex to give
him money, but Jacob jumped in. He explained to her that he has it and not
to worry. Still Franseca insisted to give Alex some money so he can pay for
their lunch at least.

Jacob didn't fight Franseca, he walked away. Alex took the money and
followed Jacob to the truck. As they drove down to Western Play Land, they
talked about going back to school on Monday. Each of them agrees on how
they wish they could have another week.

After Jacob paid for the arm band to ride all the rides all day long as
much as they want everyone got into their little groups and headed
off. Jacob and Dewayne went on every ride together except any ride that
went into the air.

Jacob is afraid of heights and will not get on a ride that leaves the
ground. No matter how much Dewayne asked him to get on those rides, Jacob
refused. Jacob finally gave in and told Dewayne he should hang with Tom and
David when he wants to ride on those rides. He will watch from the ground
as he rides them.

Reluctantly, Dewayne agreed with Jacob and joined Tom and David in line. As
Dewayne rode the rides with Tom and David, Jacob walked around the
grounds. He got into his own little world thinking about everything that
has happened to him during the holidays.

One thing Jacob knows for sure is that his life keeps changing. He keeps
loosing those he cares about. No matter what he tries to do, he can't
escape from the black hole of his sickness. Every time he turns around,
there is a surprise around the corner for Jacob.

Jacob sat down on a bench and put his head into his hands. He just sat
there in the cold on the bench going over everything in his mind. He looked
up to see Dewayne walking over to him. He made a promise to himself right
there and then. He is going to do whatever it takes to be with Dewayne for
the rest of his life. This is one thing he doesn't want to change in his
life anymore, his boyfriend. It hurt too much the first time.

WRITER'S CORNER:

{Ok this chapter has a lot of emotional plots in it. It went through almost
a week of Jacob's life. We saw Jacob in this chapter go through a lot of
ups and downs. There are a few people constant in Jacob's life right now,
Dewayne and his grandfather. Also his friends have been there.

I know that I promised you readers that I wasn't going to do anything else
to Jacob. What I did to Jacob as far as his kidneys happened to me later in
life. Dialysis kick started my kidneys, but I don't know if I will have my
character be that lucky. To this day I still have problems with my
kidneys. It's something I know I will never get rid of.

As far as Jacob in the story, his family and friends are there for
him. That is what you need to get through bad patched in your life. Just
like I said above, I wonder what is going to happen with Jacob though. Will
I let him follow in my real life foot steps? Or will he end up in the
hospital for a transplant?

Jacob and Dewayne took the next step in their relationship. Although it
wasn't a full blown out sex scene, they did take the next step. I know when
I dated seriously, the first couple of times were not a full blown out
sex. I plan to do that in this story as well.

Andy left to basic training in this chapter. It was a tearful goodbye for
Andy and everyone in his family. They all want Andy back in one
piece. Right now I have no plans but to bring him back in one piece. Andy
is not going anywhere. He is going to be here to stay. The question though
is if Andy is going to get what he wants, a peaceful time in the
military. The first Gulf War has already ended, but who knows what's next.

Gloria seems to be coming around finally. At least she knows that see can't
push Dewayne around like she did to Joey. Dewayne will put her in her place
if she tries. She actually seems to love that about him. I think if Joey
had more of a backbone with her, maybe she would have respected Joey a
little more.

Jacob is cutting all ties of the past dealing with Joey. He wants to sell
the house that Joey was given to him from his aunt and uncle. Do you guys
think honestly that Jacob is going to sell the house? Or do you think he is
going to move out his mother form that house and just board it up for Joey?
Jacob might want to get far away from Joey and that past, but he has a
heart at the same time.

What is this land that Al is talking about that he wants to buy? I think Al
has plans to do more than just owning restaurants. He sees something that
others are not seeing. Remember that Al is a very smart man. He knows how
to make money.

The guys are about to go back to school. The old plots that got left off
when they went to Christmas break will return. ROTC, Loraine, school and
everything between is about to come flooding back. Let's see how Jacob and
the guys handle that.

We also have Toni plot as far as if Al gets guardianship over him. Andy
Sr.; what is going on there with him and Gloria? It is looking more and
more like they are getting back together. Or are our eyes playing tricks on
us? McDonalds and everything going on in the McDonald's is still out there
that needs a conclusion.

As always I can go on and on about the open plots in the story! If I do
that, I can actually write several more chapters. There are so many plots
that can take a turn at anytime. You might think it is going to go one way,
but is ends up going another. Don't miss out on anything, or you will be
kicking yourself for it.

I keep saying over and over again don't forget about Chase. He will be
spending time between two of my stories. I am giving that away, but look
for him in "Beneath the Mask". He is going to come back fully and what is
happening in his life will stun you.

I know the family was dead set against Andy Jr. going into the
military. He's smart doing so. It's going to give him what he needs in his
life to grow into his full potential. The experience and education Andy
Jr. needs can't be gotten in school. He's going to be just fine and is
going to excel in the service is my guess.  Look at the great leaders that
came up through the ranks of the military in the past.  Andy Jr. could be
one in the bud.

Dewayne is solid and every bit Jacob's equal. They deserve each other and
being together is going to enhance both their lives and bring them both

had backbone, she wasn't ready to see it let alone respect it. Yes, Joey
was spineless, but when Gloria dealt with Joey, she was in a nearly blind
rage over Jacob's sexuality. It took Andy Sr. to start her on the path of
enlightenment and tolerance.

Jacob needs to fine a property management company and have them manage the
house that was Joey's. Let them lease it out and maintain it. The market
isn't right for a sale, so leasing it is the best way to go. It also means
Jacob has no hands-on responsibility. It's just an asset on his books;
nothing more. Then, later, when conditions are right, the house can be
sold. Another creative way the house could be sold is on a
lease-option-to-buy. That could give some person or couple a leg up as they
get started in life and beginning to paying for a home before they might
otherwise be able to qualify for a mortgage.

Jacob's kidney problems aren't a huge concern for me. Kidney problems are
readily fixable. What concerns me is Jacob's hardheaded views about the
hospital. Most problems in Jake's life he confronts head-on. His health is
just the opposite. He buries his head in the sand. Dewayne and Al won't let
him; of that I'm certain.
