Josh's Summer Job 10

"I should be pissed."

"For having a real hot time, and who did I sleep with?"

"I suppose that's something."

"Something I've never done before," Josh admitted.

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"I'm not looking to fight about this."

"I'm sorry okay."

"Huh?"

"I'm sorry," Josh repeated softening perceptibly. "You were all about not
turning last night into anything cheap and I fucked it up."

Jamie studied the young man driving the pickup. This was far more complex
than anything he had intended after meeting Josh yesterday. Josh
concentrated on driving and allowed the silence to linger as he considered
the consequences of last night's events. The warning lights were flashing.
It had happened yesterday when Billy had caught him. Then again as he
spent time with Jamie and planned Billy's inclusion. He recognized the
feeling, and it made him nervous.

Danny and Billy were sitting on the front steps as Josh pulled up. Jamie
chuckled as they trotted up the truck. Billy was in cutoffs and a mesh
top. Danny had on an old set of uniform football pants. They piled into
the truck bed on Josh's instructions. The client was a large funeral home,
with extensive lawns gardens and walks. He gave Billy and Danny lawn
mowers and set them to edging the expanses of grass. He handed Jamie the
weed whacker and instructed him on the areas where it needed to be
employed. Once the three of them were busy he went back to the garage and
checked on the lawn tractor. The business owned a John Deer with a sizable
forward mowing deck. They allowed Josh to use it in return for a slight
discount.

"Good morning Joshua." Came a mellow baritone.

"Morning Mr. Hansen."

"You hire a crew?"

"Running a little behind today. Asked some friends to lend a hand so we
can get done before noon."

"Might not be a bad idea to think about expanding. An ambitious young man
like you could do well for himself."

"Thank you sir."

Josh had finished checking the tractor and topping off the fuel. The oil
was a little low and Josh checked the pile of kitty little beneath the
machine.

"Is Scott in the office sir?"

"I believe he has a client right now. Do you need to talk to him?"

"Just this oil leak on the tractor. I've told him about it, but he may
have forgotten. It's a real good machine, he should have it looked at
before it causes a problem."

"Would you be interested in it?"

"Sir?"

"Could you use the machine in your business?"

"I'd need a trailer, and I'd want it looked at before I made an offer."
Josh said considering. "It's probably worth more than I can afford."

"If I had it fixed, would you provide your service for half cost for say
eighteen months?"

"Fixed at the dealership?"

"Wouldn't know where else to take it."

"And half the full price seeing I wouldn't be using your tractor."

"You are an excellent businessman Joshua."

"Does Scott know you're making this deal?"

"He may manage the business young man, but he doesn't own it yet."

"I'd be happy to purchase the tractor on those terms sir." Josh said
beaming as he accepted the man's hand on the deal.

The work went quickly. Josh finished the lawns in well under an hour. He
set the others to cleaning up the parking lot and cleaning the walks with
the leaf blower. He set Billy to raking up a spots where the grass had
grown too thick. He checked his watch it was half past eleven. He went
around to the back door and peeked in. Two of the attendants were having
coffee in the kitchen of the stately house that had been converted into a
funeral parlor.

"Scott still with the client?"

"They just left, go on in."

Josh knocked then let himself in. It was a large room that looked out onto
the gardens. Scott was on the phone as Josh entered. Josh sat on the arm
of a chair and waited for him. The man was in his early thirties. He had
close cropped light brown hair and handsome chiseled features.

"Thought you were going to let me down today buddy," Scott said coming
around the desk to greet him.

"Have I ever done that?"

"No, no you haven't. The old man just told me you're going to buy the
tractor."

"Won't do it if you don't like the deal."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"I appreciate that."

"I wouldn't want it to ruin our arrangement." Josh said softly, shyly
making eye contact.

"Oh Josh, no, no." Scott said moving close and putting an arm around
Josh's shoulder. "I don't think of our arrangement as business."

"You pay me."

"To give you and your family a little extra help."

Josh hugged him around the waist. His hand strayed to the man's thigh. He
bit his lip and looked up to catch the man's eye.

"Is there time?" Josh asked hopefully.

"If we're quick," Scott said consulting the clock.

Ten minutes later Scott was rearranging his clothing and combing his hair
as Josh licked the last of the evidence from his lips.

"We're going to open in few minutes," Scott said seeing Josh linger.

"If you have a moment I'd like to get you caught up on lawn payments."

"Are we behind?"

"Just a few weeks," Josh said producing the invoice.

Scott looked it over and smiled up at the young man.

"If you'd like I can come back on Wednesday."

"No problem, I'll write you a check now."

"No Scott," Josh said leaning in to caress the man's face. "I meant stop
back to spend more quality time, we've both been so busy lately."

Scott escorted Josh to the back door. Billy was loading a lawn mower in
the truck.

"Who's the new help?" Scott wondered.

"See something you like?"

Scott looked at Josh and then back toward Billy with renewed interest.

"Could that be arranged?"
