I never realized how much your life can change in a
matter of minutes. How a phone call could change your life
forever but not before making you feel having your own heart
ripped from your chest. I was on the ground, screaming and
crying. I couldn't believe it. It wasn't true; it was all a
lie, a cruel joke. When you hear that your parents are dead,
you can't believe it. The people who raised you and cared
for you since the beginning are taken from you, you just
can't believe it. The cops who came by the house said they
understood, but they were just trying to be nice. They'd
never understand what it feels like.
When I had more tears to shed and my eyes were red, one
of the officers said they had contacted my brother and that
he was on his way. I looked up to my brother for as long as
I can remember. He was always kind and protective of me.
Nobody would mess with my brother so I knew I could rely on
him when my parents weren't around. Now I would be relying
on him until I became an adult.
My brother's name is Zack, and he's 22-years-old. He's
your college jock type but also the tall, dark, and handsome
type as well standing at 6' 3'' and dark brown hair, short
stubble, and hazel eyes and always wearing simple shirts and
pants in dark colors. Even thought he was seen as a muscle
god, he was smart. Ever since 9th grade, I don't think he
ever got anything below an A and his senior year, I think he
had straight, 100% perfect A's all year. I couldn't believe
that he could be a hot stud with the perfect tan and a
straight A student. Most people thought Jocks were dumb or
not nerd smart but somehow, my brother was what women call,
the perfect man. He's polite and kind and isn't selfish or
stuck on himself and he wasn't the kind of guy who spends
his time looking to add notches to his belt by whoreing
himself with every hot girl he meets.
I was very different from my brother. I'm only 17 and
fit the twink category. I'm short at 5' 8'' and I have a
slim swimmer's build and I loved keeping my hair long and
layered, just past my shoulders. Unlike my brother who
inherited the dark brown hair and hazel eyes family gene, I
inherited the rare genes that gave me raven back hair and
had eyes that people could never tell if they were blue or
green. Most people believed I wore contacts because my eyes
were so bright and piercing with their unnatural color. I
also always kept clean shaven and always wore button up
shirts that cling to my frame yet have loose and droopy
sleeves. I like my jeans to cup my perfect ass that I
exercised everyday for.
After my brother and I sold our parents house and sold
items we didn't need, we packed everything of mine and moved
it to his small apartment in the Brookhaven Apartments in
Aeon. The owner was a wonderfully nice lady who kept the
apartment building clean and free drug dealers and drunken
bastards. Everything about the building was also kept up to
date and if something broke, it fixed right away by this hot
repairman.
Christmas break was spent getting settled and getting
me registered at Aeon High to finish my junior year. I had
to admit, I liked Aeon, it's was cool during the winter but
no snow and the sun was out almost everyday. I know I like
cool weather but I hate the cold and freezing snow. It was
strange for me to just sit in Zack's apartment all day while
he was at work. With Zack being a guy and living like one, I
took up cleaning and doing laundry. I also did most of the
cooking because Zack didn't know how to cook too many meals.
I didn't mind, as it kept me busy, plus, the apartment
really needed it. I deep cleaned to tiny kitchen and small
dining/living room, the small bathroom and bedroom. Zack and
I had a little trouble making the bedroom into and area for
both of us to feel like we had our own separate rooms and it
worked out, even though you could feel claustrophobic in
there.
I had finished cooking spaghetti and meatballs when
Zack came home from work. He opened the door and kind-of
stood still as he looked the clean and neat apartment that
had looked like some little kids messy bedroom earlier. He
smiled and hung up his coat and he stepped into the kitchen.
"I see someone's been busy today," he said as he went to
stick his finger in the spaghetti sauce to taste it but I
batted his hand away.
"Ah, you can wait Mr. Bottomless Stomach," I told him
as I prepared to plates.
"Yes mom," he said as he took out two glasses and pop
for drinks and sat them on the table.
"Well, someone has to teach the barbarian manners," I
joked with a big smile. Zack mock glared at me then an evil
smile on his face. I placed the plates on the table and
looked at him.
"What?" I asked. He suddenly started to tickle me
without mercy. I was on the floor, trying to get away while
laughing so hard a few tears escaped. "I give! I give!" I
yelled as he finally stopped tickling me. We stood and sat
down to eat while talking about Zack's classes starting back
up and me having to attend school.
***
"Come on, Lindsey, get up. You can't be late on your
first day to a new school." I put my pillow over my head and
snuggled deeper into my blankets. I felt a cold ice cube go
sliding down my back and sat bolt upright and yelp. Zack had
a triumphant smile on his face as he left the bedroom. I
glared at him but got out of bed and headed for the bathroom
to get ready. I chose to wear my form fitting, long sleeved
teal shirt. I pushed the sleeves up a bit to make them look
like three quarter sleeves. Sliding on a pair of faded
jeans, Zack came back into the bedroom saying we had to go.
I ran a brush through my long layered hair and gave myself a
quick look over before grabbing my backpack and heading out.
Zack left to go to his classes after he dropped me off
at Aeon High. People who were outside stared at me, I bet
trying to figure out who the new kid was. Most everyone made
eye contact giving no surprise as to my shocking and
piercing blue/green eyes. Being shy, I wrapped my arms
around myself and with my head slightly downcast, I walked
towards the entrance. I quickly made my way to the office
and got my class schedule and locker number and combination.
I went out in search for my locker in the big hallways full
of students. I was glad they went in numerical order so
finding my locker was easy, even though I had to go up to
the second floor and walk to the end of the hall to find it.
I entered the combination and pulled on the latch, but the
locker wouldn't open. I pulled on the latch again but it
still didn't open so I put the combination in again and it
still didn't open. I started to get upset and embarrassed at
the same time. I could hear a few snickers from people
around me. I had this problem at my other school and knew
just how to take care of it. I step back and gave my locker
a hard roundhouse kick. I pulled on the latch and it opened.
I smiled at my victory and looked around. People turned
their gaze from and went back to what they were doing. Being
new, I probably shouldn't have done that, but at least I
could put my bag away.
It took me a while to find my Geometry class and the
tardy bell rang before I got through the door but the
teacher said since I was right there he's wouldn't count it
against me. "I know it can be a long walk to get to some
classes so as long as you're near the room and messing
around I don't count the tardy against you. You must be the
new student, Lindsey Daniels?"
"Yes, that's me," I responded. He put out his hand and
I shook it.
"I'm Mr. Hanson, welcome to Geometry class. You can sit
in the back row next to Mr. Kincaid." I smiled and made my
way to the back of the class, all eyes on me. I sat down in
the nice desk and placed my notebook and pen on the desk and
clasped my hands together to keep from fidgeting. I felt a
tap on my right arm and turned to look at who it was.
"Hey, I'm Taylor," he said. Taking a quick look at him
and the jacket wore, I could tell he was a football jock and
damn was he hot with his dirty blonde hair in short spikes
and medium blue eyes. He had a strong jaw and looked like he
worked out a lot. I couldn't tell with him sitting down, but
I think he was a tall guy too. I shook his strong hand and
introduced myself.
"Hi, I'm Lindsey." He nodded his head.
"So, where you from?" he asked me.
"South Ashfield, my parents died and came here to live
with my older brother," I told him. He gave me a sympathetic
look.
"Sorry to hear that." I shrugged.
"It's okay; I've gotten over it, but thank you." He
looked like he was going to say something but Mr. Hanson
started to teach so we turned to face the front and listen.
I noticed that throughout the class, some of the students
would sneak glances at me. I didn't mind too much, I could
understand being new and all.
The next three classes off without a hitch and it was
lunch time. I started to get worried because I didn't know
where to sit and I didn't want to be one of those people
that ate their lunch in the bathroom. "Hey, Lindsey," I
turned to the familiar voice to see Taylor with his lunch
walk up to me. "Come sit with me and guys."
"Okay," I said. I followed him through the lunch room
and table with what I could guess was the rest of the
football team. Most of them had jackets and they all looked
like they worked out but some seemed to have more muscle
than others. They had either spiked hair or the messy look.
Taylor said his `hey' and `what's up' with the guys as he
sat down. He motioned for me to sit down next to him and I
did.
"Hey, this is Lindsey, he moved here from South
Ashfield," Taylor said, introducing me. One of the slimmer
build guys looked at me for a second.
"Are you wearing contacts?" he asked. I smiled and
blushed slightly.
"No, it's my natural eye color," I told, brushing hair
out of my face. Everyone seems to stare at my eyes for a
minute before turning their attention to their food and
other conversations.
"What brought you to Aeon, Lindsey?" asked the football
player with white blonde spiked hair asked me.
"My parents passed away and I came here to live with my
brother," I told him. Some of the guys did the `oohhh' and
looked sympathetic. "It's okay; doesn't bother me much
anymore," I told them and some nodded their heads. It was
silent for a minute while they ate their food before Taylor
spoke up.
"So Lindsey, you do any sports?"
"No, not really a sports person, though I did take
fencing and aikido classes back in South Ashfield."
"Hey, are you the guy who kicked this locker this
morning? Some people were talking about a new kid and karate
kicked his locker to open this morning," white blonde hair
asked me. I blushed and ducked me head slightly. "I used to
have that problem with my locker last year and had to bang
on it to open it. This school is big and has the money but
it seems like they just don't want to use on simply fixing
the lockers which is cool because it means us football
players get more for uniforms and a better football field."
Some of the other guys nodded their heads in agreement and
did the `um hmm'.
Lunch seemed to end quickly and everyone started to
leave, saying their good-byes and `see you at practice'. I
threw away my lunch tray and started to look for my next
class.
***
After school let out, I grabbed my backpack and waited
for Zack to pick me up. He arrived on time and drove me back
to his apartment. We talked about my first day and how
everything went along way. After he dropped me off, he had
to head into work but he said he'd be home early tonight. I
let myself into the apartment and dropped my backpack into
the closet and then went to the kitchen to the dishes. I did
my daily check around to make sure everything was cleaned up
and put away before turning on the TV and flip through
channels. With nothing on to watch, decided to take a nap.
"NNNNNOOOOO!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "IT'S
NOT TRUE! YOU'RE A LAIR, YOU'RE LIEING!" I yelled at the
people around me. My cries and sops over took me, causing me
to fall to me knees and wrap my arms around myself. "Not
true, not true, not true," I repeated over and over, slowly
rocking back and forth. Someone put their arm on my shoulder
and said it was going to be okay. "NNNOOOO!"
I sat bolt upright on the couch. My breath was quick
and ragged. I could the sheen of sweat on my body and ran my
hands over my face. I heard quick footsteps from the bedroom
and Zack came out with a worried look on his face. "Lindsey?
What is it; what's wrong?" he asked me as he kneeled by the
couch. My breathing started to slow and return to normal as
I closed my eyes and swallowed.
"Nothing, just a bad dream," I said as I slowly stood
and headed for the bathroom.
Looking at myself in the mirror, I could tell I looked
like the walking dead but after washing my face with cold
water, I looked normal again and the sweat was gone from my
body. Leaving the bathroom and heading into the living room,
I could see the sun was setting outside. Running my hand
through my layers of hair, I let out a big sigh before
turning my attention to Zack setting paper plates and a
pizza box on the table. I sat down and took the offered
glass of ice water and eagerly took a big gulp. "Dreaming
about what happened with mom and dad?" Zack asked quietly. I
slowly shook my head once. He nodded and looked down at his
plate before speaking again. "It'll be okay. The dreams will
go away and you'll be dreaming about when we accidentally
put a dent in dad's car." I let out a laugh, remembering. We
got in so much trouble yet new weren't punished because we
were just kids you didn't no better at the time.
We ate in silence before watching some TV. I don't know
when I fell asleep, just that I woke up in my bed the next
day to the beeping of the alarm clock.
