Last Chance for Jason
by Squall Thrawn

previously in Last Chance...

Kevin sighed and looked down at the floor. It was time he played his last
card. All he could do after that was hope and pray.

"Jason... I know you're confused about all this. Like I said, this is one
of the most painful things one can go through. So if you want, I'll give
you some room. If you feel like you're not ready to be going out with a
guy yet, I'll understand. And regardless, I'll still be your friend. I
just..." Kevin faltered, then continued. "I don't want to live my life
thinking that I forced you into this."

Jason took a deep breath and responded. "Kev, I...."

Chapter 3

"...know how hard that was for you to say." Jason cleared his throat, then
continued on. "But I'm gonna have to turn you down on this one." Kevin's
head jerked up. "You could never force me to do anything I didn't want to
do. Kev, I was confused before I ever received your note. But I chose to
respond to it anyway. I was serious when I said I wanted to go out with
you. All I know is that I want to explore these feelings with you." By this
time, both Kevin and Jason were openly crying. "You told me to look to my
heart for my answer. My heart is telling me that if I let you go, I'll have
made the worst mistake in my life. If our relationship is wrong, I don't
want to be right."

With that, Kevin pulled Jason into a fierce hug. As the two boys held each
other, time didn't seem to matter. Minutes could have passed by. Hours,
even. But Kevin and Jason paid time no heed. Just holding each other,
knowing that the other would be there no matter what, was all that
mattered.

Finally, the outside world managed to get their attention. A nearby clock
chimed, giving the time as 3 o'clock. Realizing that his mother would be
home soon, Kevin reluctantly broke the hug.

"Jase.. my mother will probably be home soon," said Kevin.

"Alright.. should I leave, then?" asked Jason, reluctantly.

"Of course not!! All that means is that we'll have to be a bit more
discreet so that my mother doesn't find out... At least, until we tell
her," said Kevin, smiling. "So why don't you stay a while? We can talk some
more in my room."

"Ok, Kev," said Jason, his confident smile back. Kevin led Jason down the
hallway to his room. As Jason entered Kevin's room, he looked around. The
walls were covered with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings posters. A fairly
new computer sat on a desk to one side, and a TV and VCR were off to the
side. "Nice room, Kev," said Jason, smiling.

"Thanks, Jase," said Kevin, smiling back at him. "Do you want anything to
drink? I've got some Mountain Dew over here."

"Ok!" said Jason. Kevin tossed Jason a Mountain Dew from a nearby case, and
got one out for himself. The two of them sat on Kevin's bed, with their
backs leaning up against the wall. "So, Kev," said Jason, "I kinda noticed
that you were fairly comfortable with the thought of telling your mother
about me. I assume you've come out to your parents, then?"

"Yeah, I came out to them back in January," said Kevin. "They seem to think
I'm just going through a phase or something, but sometimes I get the
feeling that my mother might actually believe that I know what I'm talking
about."

"You are so lucky," said Jason. He frowned slightly. "My father would
probably go berserk if he found out."

"What about your mother?" asked Kevin. "What would she say?"

"My mom died when I was three," said Jason, sadly. "I barely even knew
her. My dad never remarried, but he's going out with some woman named
Laura. I've not met her yet. But she probably won't last long. They never
do."

"Sorry, man," said Kevin, regretting his question.

"That's ok, Kev," said Jason. "You didn't know."

Just then, Kevin heard the front door being opened.

"Hi, Kevin, I'm home," called Mrs. Parker as she walked in the door.

"Hi, Mom!!" Kevin called back.

Soon, Kevin's mother appeared at Kevin's door. "Hey, Kevin, whose car is
that in the driveway?" Just then she saw Jason. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't
see you there at first. I'm Elayne Parker, Kevin's mother."

"It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Parker," said Jason friendly enough but with a
hint of nervousness.

"Mom, this is Jason Schuler. He's.. a friend from work." The pause was just
barely noticeable.

"Well, I'm pleased to meet you, Jason, and please call me Elayne," said
Mrs. Parker, just as warmly as before. "Are you staying for supper? I'm
making one of my specialties: Lasagna. I always make plenty, so no one will
go hungry."

"Thanks, Mrs. Par.. Elayne," said Jason, smiling back at her. "I'd love
to. Let me just get a hold of my father, and ask him if he's ok with it."

"Sure, Jason," said Kevin's mother. "The phone's right in the living room."
Jason got up and Mrs. Parker showed him in the living room where the phone
was. While Jason was talking on the phone, Kevin's mother came back into
Kevin's room and looked at Kevin.

"Kevin?" asked Mrs. Parker. Kevin looked up. "I'd like to ask you
something, if that's alright?"

"Sure, Mom," asked Kevin, a tad confused.

"This Jason boy... he isn't just a friend, is he?" Mrs. Parker asked Kevin
slowly and calmly. She didn't really need an answer, as the look on Kevin's
face told her right there. Just then, Jason came in the door.

"My dad said 'whatever,' it'd save him the trouble of getting food," said
Jason. Just then, he looked at the expression on Kevin's face. "What's the
matter, Kev?" But Kevin was speechless.

"Please tell me the truth, Jason," asked Mrs. Parker firmly, yet not
unfriendly. "Are you and my son more than just friends?" However, she
realized that she wouldn't get an answer out of Jason either. He was too
busy resembling a deer in the headlights. "Alright. I take it from your
reactions that I've hit the nail on the head."

"You're right, Mom," Kevin finally managed. Jason looked at Kevin with a
shocked look, but Kevin smiled at him. Kevin got up from the bed and walked
over to Jason, and held his hand. Squeezing it reassuringly, Kevin managed
to speak clearly. "Jason and I are going out." Jason managed a slight grin
in Kevin's direction.

"I see. And you've thought this through, both of you?" Mrs. Parker
asked. They both nodded. "Well, I'll admit to not being totally
surprised. Since Kevin came out to me in January, I've been doing a lot of
thinking. Though I'm still not sure you've considered all the consequences
of your actions, you're grown up now. I think you've proven that you can
accept responsibility for your actions. There are a few things, however. I
won't allow any.. umm.." she blushed slightly. "I think you know what I
mean. That's not because of your situation; if you had a girlfriend, my
rules would still apply. Also, I'd like to get to know you better, Jason."

"Yes, ma'am," said Jason meekly.

"What did I tell you to call me?" asked Mrs. Parker, smiling at Jason to
show she wasn't mad at him.

"Yes, Elayne," said Jason shyly smiling back.

"Also, I'm not sure how soon you want to break this to your father," said
Mrs. Parker. "I'm pretty sure the only reason he hasn't gone on an
anti-gay tirade yet is the idea that you weren't sure of yourself."

"I'll wait for a while to tell Dad," said Kevin, his smile quickly
disappearing. Jason squeezed Kevin's hand.

"How did you know, Elayne?" asked Jason curiously. "Were we that obvious?"

"Well, you weren't transparent, but we mothers have special powers, you
know. I could tell that Kevin was reluctant to introduce you as just a
friend, and two new friends don't sit quite so close together at the
start."

"Wow, Mom, that was brilliant!" said Kevin, smiling again.

"Thank you, Kevin. Anyway, I'll leave you two boys to your conversation,"
said Mrs. Parker, turning towards the door. "You're still welcome to stay
for dinner of course, Jason." She walked out the door, but turned
around. "And if you two help set the table in a while, I might just let the
two of you sit next to each other." The big grins on the boys' faces were
immediate. With that, she left to get dinner ready.

"Wow, Kevin, that was intense," said Jason, wiping his forehead. "But I
can't believe that your mother was so cool about it!!"

"I know, I never would have guessed," said Kevin, wiping his own
forehead. "I mean, I figured she'd come around eventually, but never this
fast."

"What are we going to do about our fathers?" said Jason, his brow creasing
slightly. "I mean, my father would pitch a fit, definitely, and your mother
seems to think your father wouldn't approve either."

"I don't know, Jason, I don't know..."
