SHEW now that we have got all that out of the way I give you the second
chapter of life in the south. As always I would love to hear from you email
me at nickwritessouthern@gmail.com

The truck door slammed shut and my dad rolled down the window "Hank don't
worry bud you'll do great today." He said as he eased the truck away from
the drop off line and drove away I watched him drive letting it all sink in
that I was alone now in a sea of twelve hundred students shuffling around
looking for friends and lockers. I looked around for one friendly face
someone that I could get with to fight the madness I had been dropped into
when as if on cue Hunter appeared from between a group of what had to be
seniors.

He grabbed my shoulder with that big goofy smile he had earlier when we
were running flashing from ear to ear. "Come on Hank we have to get to the
gym to get our info packs and locker combos!" He yelled and started to drag
me across the school past the math wing, history wing and the stairs
leading upstairs to all English and sciences classes. The gym was just
possible the worse place in the whole school, seven hundred freshman
crammed into seven lines leading to folding tables with computers and
school administrators.

It was an easy process when you got to the front of the line you told the
administrator your name, they would peck away at their keyboard for a
moment to find your information packet. It also went fast since the school
system didn't account for extra time out of a school day to do this all
seven hundred students would go through and get their packets in roughly
forty five minutes before the first class period. I got in third line with
the rest of j's with the last name of Jenkins while Hunter was in the first
I was cussing in my head why couldn't Hunter have a J name instead of
Daniels he actually had. However I didn't have much time to think of how I
was once again alone the line to the front never seemed to stop a stead
forward movement and before long I was next.

An older looking woman with a voice that sounded like nails against a
chalk board. Clicked away at her keyboard after I told her my name, she
printed off three sheets of paper and stapled them together then waved me
off for the next poor student to come up to the table. Hunter appeared
again out of thin air and I made a note to ask him sometime how he does
that. He grabbed my sheet and scanned it quickly before looking at his
again, then got that goofy smile on his face. "Man we got lucky three out
of four this semester, at least we will know two people" he said. While I
breathed a sigh of relief I don't know what I would have done without
Hunter in my class, I tend to be shy at first. I took my schedule back and
looked at it English I, Math, History and Gym nothing too hard to start out
with just maybe I will be able to survive this freshman year thing after
all.

We grabbed our backpacks and started to work our way through the school to
the English wing for our first class of the day. Once we got to the climb
the stairs and got to our home room the teacher came Mrs. Nash, she's a
short woman not much taller than most of students in the class. After she
gave us a welcome speech and told us that the lockers on either side of her
classroom would be ours for the entire year although we would only be in
her class until Christmas and that she would assign them along with our
books tomorrow. From English it was off to math so back down the stairs we
all went like a large group of cattle being herded from one spot to
another. Where once I again had Hunter with me and we took two desks close
the window which was propped open with a warm summer breeze blowing
in. Mrs. Fritz gave a speech similar to Nash's and then gave us free time
to converse with our friends. This was the class I knew that I would
struggle in Math just wasn't my thing, Hunter though lives and dies by
numbers.

So it came as no surprise when he seemed to be one of the most
disappointed that we weren't just hopping right on in. When I saw this I
couldn't pass up the chance to give him a good ribbing "come on man try not
to look too much like a nerd it is our first day after all." That got me a
good punch on the shoulder and a look from him, that's why he was my best
friend though we constantly were on each other for something either school
related or sports wise. Time seemed to crawl to a stop though of course
that might have been due to the fact we were hungry and all that stood
between us a wonderful government prepared meal was a second hand on the
wall clock that I'm sure I saw move backwards once.

Finally the bell sounded and if the movement from English to Math could be
compared to a herd moving along the rush to lunch was a stamped. Lucky for
me and hunter the closest hall to the cafeteria was the math hall so we got
in line before it was almost to the door. After going through the line and
getting a hamburger and hunters pizza we started looking around for a place
to sit and of course there were none to be had with two seats together.
Then it occurred to me, "hey Hunter let's just go out to the quad I mean
it's still summer technically even if we are in this prison." He nodded his
head and we went out the side door of the cafeteria and walked around the
outer wall to the big open quad the school seemed to be built around. We
sat at one of the wooden picnic tables and ate in peace without the dull
roar of three hundred students trying to talk to each other all at once,
which made the experience that much cooler.

After we ate and got our trays back into the cafeteria it was off to my
favorite class history. I have always been a vary social guy and loved
learning the social side of history, Hunter on the other hand couldn't
stand history he hated everything about it. I had tried to get him into it
talking about different types of history even going into military history
thinking seeing the numbers behind troop movements and military spending
would get to him but that failed too. It was like trying to fit a square
peg in a round hole, of course he would tell you the same about his
attempts to get me into Math.

So when Mr. Ogg followed suit of Nash and Fritz basic introduction and
brief rundown of what we would be learning this semester I was highly
disappointed. When Hunter saw my face he just knew it was his turn to get
pay back for my earlier comments of being a nerd "so how's the nerd now, so
sad we get to learn about a bunch of dead guys now?" To which I retaliated
with a punch of my own on his shoulder, and he grinned and stuck out his
hand a sign to say that we were even again, I took his hand and started
swinging it between the row of desk and he couldn't get me to let go fast
enough. Then came the worse part of the day Hunter would be off to health
class while I went to gym. When we got out of Oggs class room we started
toward the gym and Hunter said "we can meet at the flag pole after class
and my dad can give us a ride." To which I agreed with and we went our
separate ways, when I got to the gym there were students everywhere guys
playing a game of pickup basketball and girls in the stands some watching
the boys others gossiping and giggling. Then I heard what at first a fire
alarm was until I turned my head and saw a man built like a football
linebacker with a whistle in his mouth.

It turned out he was the gym teacher and our football coach, coach
Raider. He gave us the same basic introduction that all our other teachers
had and when no one had questions he told us that we would now be assigned
lockers to keep our gym clothes in, we had to wear appropriate clothing for
the physical activities we would be dining for every day we didn't dress we
lost one grade point. He had a female upperclassmen to take the girls to
their locker room while he took the guys. Once inside he dropped another
bombshell we would have to shower after gym class as well before we could
leave. I looked around me at all the guys in the locker room and about how
interesting the semester had just got.

Well there you go guys chapter two is up, like it hate it? Let me know at
