Lives Changed
6-B
House Speech

Malcolm's visit with Dr. Philips went smoothly at first. The doctor checked
out the small cuts on Malcolm's body and found them healing nicely. When he
checked the bullet crease on Malcolm's shoulder, he became concerned, as it
was inflamed and oozing. "Mr. Daniels, I would like you to keep your shirt
off for a while. I'm going to get a hot compress for your shoulder,"
Dr. Philips said as he walked out of the office

As Dr. Philips was getting the compress, Johnny Hawks walked over. "How
does he look, Doc?" Johnny asked.

"Well, the small cuts are healing fine, but..." the doctor started to say
until he saw Zeke standing by the door.

"Mr. Hawks, when can we go swimming?" Zeke asked.

"Have Bennie get you towels and into your swim suits, then we can go,"
Johnny answered, and then turned back to Philips, "but what, Doc?"

"I need to speak with Agent Mason." Philips replied.

"Well, Ace is in a meeting right now, can it wait?"

"Not for very long."

"Okay, I'll go see if he can give you a couple minutes."

While Malcolm was with the doctor, Zeke, Bennie and Patrick were playing
video games and Aaron was laying beside Tonka slowly scratching his ear and
whispering to him. Pete Morgan had just stepped off the elevator when
Johnny caught his attention. "Pete, can you stay here for a bit, I need to
get a drink and to make a quick phone call," Johnny asked.

"Sure, I was just bringing up some information for Ace."

"Well, he's in a meeting right now."

"I know, but this he'll want to see. It has to do with Malcolm Daniels."

"Give it to me and I'll get it to him right after I get my drink," Johnny
stated as he held out his left hand. Johnny was just about to walk away
when Pete stopped him.

"Johnny, what's with the little guy?" Pete asked as he stared at Aaron and
Tonka.

"That little guy's name is Aaron and his spirit has been hurt, but seems
that he has found a great friend and healer," Johnny answered, a look of
contemplation across his face as he walked over and knocked on the door to
the Treaty Room. Hearing a muffled response Johnny opened the door and
stuck his head in. "Ace, can I see you for a minute?" he asked.

"Sure, Johnny, we need a break here anyways," Ace said as he stood. "What's
up and who is with Bennie and the other boys?"

"Pete is with them. He brought you this file, and Dr. Philips needs to talk
with you. I also need a moment to call my reservation."

"Did something happen?"

"No. I was just thinking about trying to find a pup for Aaron. He's grown
quite attached to Tonka, and I think a pup would really help him."

"You could be right. Bennie did say a bit to me last night, but not
everything. Go make your call while I see what the Doc wants," Ace said
with a grimace, taking the file Johnny was handing him.

Dr. Philips went back to his office where Malcolm was now lying. Placing
the compress on his shoulder, the doctor softly spoke, "This might hurt a
bit, but try not to move. I'll only leave it on for five minutes, so
relax."

"Yes, sir," Malcolm mumbled.

Stepping out, Dr. Philips had just closed the door when he saw Ace walking
towards him. "Dr. Philips, I understand you wanted to see me," Ace asked.

"Yes, since you're the one that called and asked me to have a look at
Mr. Daniels, I thought it best to tell you that Mr. Daniels' left shoulder
has become infected. From what I could see, it looks like the wound wasn't
cleansed properly. I am going to have to sedate him and do it right,
otherwise..."

"I get the picture. I'll inform the President and call to let Mr. Daniels'
dad know."

"Thank-you. Now I had better get to work."

As Ace was walking away he quickly looked at the file that Johnny had given
him. Ace had to let Ben know about Malcolm and was just at the secretary's
desk when he froze. There in the file he had been reading underlined in
bright red were the words "Malcolm Daniels wanted for questioning in the
death of Collin Danvers and Senator Darrin Martin."

"Is the president free?" Ace asked still looking at the file.

"Let me see, Agent Mason," the secretary, Frank Harris, said. "You may go
in, sir."

"Thank-you." Ace knocked on Ben's door before entering. "Sorry to interrupt
you sir, but I thought you should know that Dr. Philips has had to sedate
Malcolm Daniels and clean up his shoulder. He believes that the emergency
room doctors in Florida didn't do the job right. Also I was just reading
that Senator Martin has been killed, and the Naples police want Malcolm for
questioning." Ace stated as he handed the president the file he had been
reading.

"Give me a few minutes to go over this Ace, then we can talk about it." Ben
stated. Ten minutes later Ben looked up. "Ace, in your honest opinion, do
you think Malcolm Daniels did this," Ben asked.

"Sir, right now I can't say for sure. I have this file, and from what Jamie
Marshall has been saying, I really don't know."

"Well, do the best you can?"

"Don't I always?"

Walking back into the Treaty Room, Ace sat down and handed the file to
Donnie. "Jamie, why don't you go join the others, I think they are
swimming. Ian can go with you," Ace said.

"Thank-you, sir," Jamie replied.

When Jamie had left, Ace turned to Donnie. "Do you want to explain that?"
Ace asked pointing towards the file.

"Ace, there is no way that Malcolm did this. First off, Malcolm never left
his home."

"How sure are you of that?"

"Very sure. Ian Stillwaters and Giles Real took Jamie to his home to pack
some clothes. Tony was at the courthouse, then at the Naples police
department. That left Morrison, Martin and myself in the house with four
boys and there were four other agents outside. Do you think that Malcolm
could slip by seven of us? Besides, he is hurt. Also, I noticed that there
does not seemed to be a TOD (time of death) in here for either of the
victims. I'll call Tony and see if he can find out more."

"No, Donnie, you go check on Malcolm; he's in with Dr. Philips. I will
phone Tony."

"Yes, sir, and I know Malcolm is innocent."

"I know that, too. I'm not accepting these reports." Ace said as Donnie
headed out of the treaty room. Then Ace took out his phone and punched in
Tony's number.

"Marchand." Tony answered on the first ring.

"Tony, it's Ace."

"Yes Ace, what can I do for you?"

"I'm reading a report here from Naples PD."

"Oh?" Tony asked surprised. "What's it about?"

"It's about the deaths of..."

"WHAT?" Tony interrupted almost blowing Ace's eardrum out.

"Hold on now, Tony, and I'll fill you in," Ace said.

Tony took a deep breath. "Alright, Ace, go ahead."

"It seems Collin Danvers and Senator Martin are dead."

"When?" Tony asked.

"That is the unsettling thing. There is no time of death on the reports, so
for now, they're incomplete and I'm not buying a word of it. Also they're
saying they want to interview Malcolm."

"Why?" Tony asked.

"Well it seems some idiot there thinks he's involved," Ace answered.

"That's bullshit," Tony fired back.

"I know, Tony. I've already had a talk with Donnie and like him, I'm
positive Malcolm isn't involved."

I know he wasn't. Look, I'll do some digging and see what I can find as to
a time and cause of death. As soon as I get something solid, I'll call
you."

"Sounds good, buddy, I'll talk with you later," Ace said then ended the
call.

Upstairs on the roof, Bennie was teaching Aaron how to swim while Patrick
and Zeke played tag and threw a ball around. Johnny, who was watching them,
had called a friend of his on the reservation and asked if she could find a
puppy with the same breeding as Tonka. Johnny's friend told him, that she
had one that was six months old, he could have and that he was well
behaved, housebroken and loved children. That was all Johnny needed to
hear. "Can you ship him to the White House?" Johnny asked, excitement in
his voice.

"Sure, but when will I get the money back. The pup is free. Just want the
shipping cost is all."

"You call me, tell me how much and I'll wire the money right away."

"All right, I will call you in a couple of hours."

Johnny had just put his phone away when Jamie came slowly walking
out. "Sir, can I join my friends?" he asked.

"Go ahead. I think a swim will be good for you," Johnny replied.

"Jamie, Bennie teached me to swim," Aaron bubbled, as Jamie jumped into the
pool with them.

"That's great, Aaron. Now you can do it at home, too."

"Uh huh, but how come you didn't come with us?"

"I had to do something with Donnie and Agent Mason, but I'm here now."

"Jamie, did you see Malcolm? Patrick asked as he swam over."

"No, I think he was still with the doctor when I came up here."

"Okay, how are you doing?"

"Good. I get to stay with Ian until everything is finished and they find my
dad."

"Well, just remember not to fall back to your old ways. I like this Jamie a
lot more."

"So do I."

Johnny was so busy watching Patrick and Jamie that he failed to see Ace
walk out carrying a towel and wearing shorts. "You look comfortable,
Johnny," Ace said as he sat down.

"Well, I figured I could watch the boys and get a bit of sun. Besides, it
looks like you had the same idea," Johnny replied, just as Zeke dumped a
bucket of cold water over him. "Holy great jumping buffalo, that's cold!"
Johnny screeched as he jumped up.

Zeke quickly dropped the bucket and quickly ran back and jumped into the
pool. The other boys, hearing Johnny, stopped what they were doing and
looked over, only to start laughing. "Guess someone needed to cool off,"
Bennie laughed.

Patrick got out of the pool, grabbed his towel and as he dried off walked
over to where Johnny and Ace were sitting. "Agent Mason, Sir?" Patrick
started, "Where's Malcolm? He shoulda been here by now."

"Well, Patrick is it? He is still with the doctor, and please call me Ace."

"It's been hours. Did something happen? If something did, then I'm gonna
hurt the guy that did it," Patrick said, getting upset.

"Patrick, there is nothing to worry about. The doctor just wants to make
sure that Malcolm is healing properly," Johnny said in a gentle voice.

"But he's my... ummm, friend."

"I know that, and we all like him. But what good is he if he is sick or
stuck back in some hospital?

"You're right, I guess. I didn't see it that way."

"Oh, I think you did. It's just that you're worried, and with everything
that has happened to you both I don't blame you."

Johnny was going to say more when his phone vibrated against his wet
thigh. Grabbing it, he dried it off the best he could before he answered
it. "Hawks here. How may I help you?" Johnny answered.

"You can send me 150 bucks, buddy. Midnight is on his way. Oh, that is his
name. He should be there in a few hours. I hope you enjoy him," his friend
said.

"Oh, he's not for me. He's for a little boy that is visiting here and need
a friend."

"Well, I know the two of them will get along just fine. Have fun."

"Oh, I think we will. Now I have to get back to work, so I'll talk with you
again soon."

Hanging up, Johnny put his phone back in his pocket and grabbed his
towel. "Are you going somewhere, Johnny?" Ace asked.

"Well, I have to change, since someone thought I needed a bath," Johnny
said as he glared at Zeke but then smiled. "And then I have a special
delivery coming tonight, so I want to be ready for it. I also have to let
the back gate know to expect it."

"Okay, but is this something that Ben or I should know about?"

"I will let you know when there aren't so many little ears around. Let's
just say I have a surprise for someone."

"Okay, I'll meet with you after you get things settled. Oh, could you
check on Malcolm? I don't think Patrick is going to settle down without
knowing something about his friend."

"Okay, and I will call you if there is anything to worry about. Oh, I guess
that when you and I talk, maybe Ben should be with us."

"I'll see what I can do. I know that he has a busy afternoon, but should be
free later. He had suggested we all got out for dinner."

The rest of the morning, and for half the afternoon, Jamie, Zeke, Bennie
and Aaron alternated between the pool and the front room where they played
video games. Tonka never strayed far from Zeke or Aaron; it was almost like
he was their shadow. Patrick found Malcolm sleeping in the room they had
been assigned. Curling up beside Malcolm, Patrick laid his arm across
Malcolm's shoulder, trying to enjoy a few moments alone with him.

After a light lunch, Ace pulled Donnie and Ian aside. He was about to speak
when Johnny walked over. Seeing Ian standing there, Johnny smiled. "Well,
Stillwaters, have you learned how to control that temper?" Johnny asked.

"Why you crazy Navajo! How the heck have you been?" Ian replied as he gave
his old friend a good handshake.

"I've been good, thanks. I won't keep you, but, Ace, I found a pup like
Tonka for Aaron. Would you tell the President that it's being delivered
after dinner?" Johnny asked. "Oh, and Ian, lets get caught up later."

"That would be great. Besides, I need to ask you a few things," Ian
replied.

After Ian left, Johnny looked at Ace. "What did Dr. Phillips say?"

"He said Malcolm's shoulder is infected. He had to sedate him so he could
remove the stitches, reopen the wound and clean it out properly. After he
was finished he had to re-stitch the wound closed. Dr. Phillips has Malcolm
in a sling and he said he could go out as long as he took it easy. One more
thing-and I know Malcolm isn't going to like it-his shoulder has to stay
dry, so that means no swimming."

"Oh man, he's not going to like that, but what can he do?"

Later in the afternoon, Doctor Philips went back to check on Malcolm to see
if there were any residual effects from the sedative that he had to use
when he cleaned Malcolm's shoulder. Seeing that Malcolm was okay, he told
him that he could get up and do what he wanted as long as he didn't use his
arm or shoulder. "Does that mean I can go out for dinner with my brothers
and everyone else?" Malcolm asked.

"Yes, but just take it easy. Try to stay relaxed, keep the shoulder dry,
and keep your arm in this," Doctor Philips answered as he handed Malcolm a
sling, and then left the bedroom.

The restaurant had a large table set up for the six boys, the President and
all the men with them. "Malcolm, tomorrow is going to be busy for you. I
was wondering, what are your brothers and friends going to do while you're
addressing the Congress?" Ace asked.

"They're going to be with me. After Sunday, I don't want them away from
me."

"I don't know about that," Ben stated.

"I do. If they can't be with me then I guess we forget this whole thing."

"Malcolm," Ben softly spoke, "this is a first; we have never had a youth
speak to Congress like you will be doing tomorrow."

"I understand, but my brothers and my friends will go with me. It's that
simple." Malcolm said.

"Then I guess I had better make some calls and get things set up." Ben said
softly as he looked at Ace.

"Malcolm, don't worry about your brothers. They'll be there and will be
safe too," Ace said as he placed his arm around Malcolm's shoulder.

As Ben, Malcolm and Ace were talking, Johnny sat with Jamie and Ian quietly
talking when Johnny's phone chirped. Answering it, Johnny was told that his
pup had arrived and would be delivered to the White House in 90
minutes. Johnny told the caller that would be fine and he would meet the
driver at the back gate. After hanging up, Johnny glanced over at Ace, who
had been watching him. Johnny just smiled, winked and nodded. Looking at
his watch Ace then turned to Ben. "Sir, I think we should be heading back,
the younger boys look like they're about to fall asleep, and Malcolm is
going to have a busy day tomorrow," Ace whispered.

"You're right; I tend to forget how Bennie was at that age," Ben Chuckled.

"I can see you carrying Bennie at that age, all cute and cuddly." Ace
laughed "Also Johnny's surprise is on its way. Malcolm, you better call
your dad and let him know that you are bringing a pet home."

"Huh, what pet?" Malcolm asked in surprise.

"You'll see when we get back to the residence," Ace smiled.

When Ben and the boys were safely into the residence, they changed into
shorts and t-shirts and were sitting watching TV. Johnny excused himself
and went down to the back gate. Johnny just reached the gate when an
airfreight cargo van pulled up. The sound of a little puppy's yapping from
inside brought a smile to Johnny's face. Going around to the back of the
van, Johnny opened the door and saw the cutest, blackest pup he had ever
seen. Midnight definitely was the right name for the shepherd/wolf cross
puppy. The puppy's tail was wagging so fast the little guy was having
trouble standing. Lifting the pet crate out of the van, Johnny signed for
the delivery and then took the pup out of the crate and put him onto the
grass where he let the pup run around and find a tree.

Johnny was just about to call the pup when the driver stopped him. "Here
you might need this," he said as he handed Johnny a 20-pound bag of puppy
food. 'She thinks of everything.' Johnny thought as he took the bag. When
Midnight had done his thing Johnny called him back and led him to the back
door to the White House.

Upstairs, Ben had managed to find some ice cream for the boys and had them
all in the dining room when Johnny walked in followed by Midnight. Aaron
was sitting closest to the doorway and when he saw Midnight his eyes got
big. "PUPPY!!!!" he screamed as he jumped off his chair and ran over to
give the little pup a hug. "You so cute. What's his name? Can I call him
Waffles?" Aaron gushed out all at once.

"His name is Midnight. I don't think Waffles would sound quite right,"
Johnny said. "Aaron, Midnight is your puppy. He comes from the same
reservation as Tonka."

"He's mine? I getta keep him? I getta take him home? But can I share him
with my brothers and friends?"

"Of course you can; he's yours. Just remember you have to feed him and give
him water and take him outside to go to the bathroom."

"Yeah, bro, and you get to clean up his land mines," Patrick laughed.

Tonka came over as Aaron was hugging the pup, sniffed around, then licked
both the pup and Aaron's face, thus giving his approval and accepting
Midnight as a member of the family.

The boys quickly finished their ice cream and went over to give Midnight a
hug. Malcolm was the last one over. "Little guy, you better watch over my
brothers," he whispered to the pup. Midnight seemed to understand what
Malcolm had said and gave him a wet tongue bath before scampering over to
sit between Aaron and Zeke.

That night it was four boys in one bed: Zeke and Aaron wedged between
Patrick and Malcolm. Aaron woke long before anyone else and left the
bedroom to go find Midnight. The pup was awake when Aaron entered the
kitchen and ran over and sat at his feet. "You got too go to the
bathroom?" Aaron asked in a sleepy whisper.

Walking over to the elevator, Aaron pushed the button and waited for the
door to open, and then both he and Midnight rode it down to the main
floor. Seeing no one around when the door opened again, Aaron walked over
to the back door and let Midnight out. Standing there Aaron watched and
then screamed as one of the uniformed officers walked over. "Hey kid, what
are you doing out here?"

Midnight, who had found his tree had done his thing, was sniffing around
when he heard Aaron's scream and came running over as fast as his little
legs would carry him. The pup stood between Aaron and the guard, growling
softly. "I woke up and puppy had to go to the bathroom," Aaron cried. "I
didn't do nothing."

"We'll see about that," the guard said as he reached for Aaron, only to
stop as Midnight's growl became louder and fiercer sounding.

Upstairs, Tonka woke up and walked into the bedroom where Malcolm was
sleeping and gently nudged him. Not getting a response, Tonka gave
Malcolm's hand a tug, and when even that didn't work, Tonka then gave a
loud bark. Tonka's bark not only woke the three boys up, but it also
brought Ace running in. "What is it boy?" Ace asked.

Patrick who was the most awake giggled, and then turned scared. "Where's
Aaron?"

"He's sleeping right..." Zeke started to say.

"Tonka, find Aaron," Ace spoke. "You boys get some shorts on and check the
other rooms and kitchen."

"Umm, Ace, maybe you should do the same," Patrick laughed.

"Here, Ace," Bennie said as he handed Ace his pants. "Aaron isn't in the
kitchen, nor is his puppy. I checked on my way here. Do you think he took
him outside?"

"Let's check the bedrooms first, then I'll call the office and see," Ace
replied slipping on his pants.

Tonka had left the room and was sniffing down the hallway when Bennie
walked up. "Did you find something boy, is it Aaron?" Bennie asked.

Tonka stopped at the elevator and was whining. "Ace," Bennie called, "I
think they went down in the elevator."

"Okay, call it up; you have your card," Ace answered as he belted his
pistol on.

When the elevator arrived, Tonka entered the car then barked. "Alright boy,
I get the message," Bennie said as they were joined by Ace.

He was about to close the door when the others came running. "Can we come?"
Patrick asked.

Ace thought for a moment then relented. "Okay, but stay with Bennie."

They all agreed, then got into the elevator. They rode it down to the
ground floor where Tonka took off for the back door, followed by Ace,
Bennie and the other boys.

Tonka saw the uniformed officer with Aaron and let out a loud bark, causing
the officer to back up and freeze.

When Ace came out, the officer stated trying to explain. "Uh, Agent Mason,
I just found him out here with his dog."

Tonka was still growling at the officer. "Tonka heel," Ace commanded as
Tonka sat, but was still watching the officer. "I understand Officer
Rojas. Aaron, you can't take off like that, son."

"Midnight had to go potty," Aaron said softly as Tonka took off with
Midnight in hot pursuit.

"That was good thinking, but next time, please make sure an agent or Bennie
is with you," Ace whispered.

"Okay, but why?" Aaron asked as Tonka came trotting up with Midnight in his
mouth.

Bennie leaned down and picked the little boy up. "Aaron, you need a special
card to get the elevator to work," Bennie answered.

"Oooohhhh," the sleepy boy said as he stuck his thumb into his mouth and
rested his head on Bennie's shoulder.

Ace looked at the officer. "Thank-you, Officer Rojas. You can return to
your duties," Ace said, dismissing the officer.

Rojas rubbed Aaron's hair then returned to his work. Ace got the others
upstairs and tucked back into bed. Bennie was about to leave when Aaron sat
up and let out a little whine. "I sworry Bennie, don't be mad at me."

Bennie came over and hugged the yawning boy.

"Oh, Aaron, I'm not angry with you; I could never do that. You just had
everyone worried about you," Bennie said as he hugged the little boy some
more.

Aaron rolled over and wiggled his PJs down. "Why are you doing that?" Ace
asked.

Aaron sniffed, knowing what was coming. "So Bennie can spank me."

Malcolm stood there in shock watching the scene unfold. Bennie scooped the
mostly bare boy into his arms. "Oh, no, Aaron, I can't spank you."

He looked up at Bennie and saw tears running down his cheeks. "Don't cwy,
Bennie, I used to get whipped a lot."

That statement even had Jamie in tears. Jamie went over and sat beside
Zeke. "Did you get it, too?

Zeke nodded. "Yeah, I used to get it a lot, too."

"Well, that won't happen anymore," Malcolm said as he leaned down and
kissed his little brothers. The four boys were tucked back into bed as the
others started to leave, but Jamie stopped and went back over to Zeke. He
leaned down and gave him a little kiss on the cheek. "Sleep well now."

"I love you, Jamie," Zeke said softly.

Malcolm heard what Zeke said, then put his arm around Jamie's
shoulder. "See buddy, everyone likes the new you."

Jamie turned to wipe his eyes he was so moved by Zeke's statement, but
quickly returned to the little boy, leaned down and whispered softly, "I
love you too, Zeke".

Ace was the last to leave the boys' room. He turned the light out but left
the door cracked so a little light could get into the room.

The next morning, after everyone had gotten a few more hours sleep, the
phone woke the boys. Quickly dressing in his suit, Malcolm got the others
up and led them down to breakfast. As soon as they finished eating, Ace led
the five boys into the Oval Office. "Mr. Daniels, it is good to see you
again," Senator Montrose spoke as he stood to shake Malcolm's hand.

Nodding towards Ben, Malcolm greeted him. "Good morning, sir, and good
morning Senator, it is good to see you also. May I introduce my brothers
Zeke and Aaron, my best friend Patrick Jacobs, and Jamie Marshall."

"Nice to meet you boys. Now, if you will follow agent Mason, I'm sure that
the Vice President would like to meet you all."

"Okay."

Lifting Aaron, Patrick carried him along as he and Jamie walked beside
Malcolm and Zeke. The five boys were looking everything over as they were
led down hallway after hallway. They stopped at another office, where they
were told to wait outside as Ace knocked and entered. "Sir, Mr. Daniels is
here with his brothers."

"Bring them in, agent Mason."

"Yes, sir. Mr. Daniels, this way, please; the Vice President will see you
now."

"Thank-you, sir."

"Mr. Daniels it is good to see you are doing well."

"Thank-you, sir. May I introduce Zeke, and my best friend Patrick Jacobs?
The one in his arms is Aaron; he and Zeke are my brothers, and this is
Jamie Marshall, another friend," Malcolm stated firmly.

"It is good to meet you all. Mr. Jacobs, I have heard a lot about you."
hear

"Thank-you, sir." Patrick replied.

"I have also heard you speak. You and Mr. Daniels have started a fight that
has come all the way to my office, and to the President," the VP remarked.

"Sir, that was not our intention, as I told the President at our last
meeting," Malcolm spoke up.

"I know that, son, but it has, and in a way I'm glad, for it meant I could
meet a couple of people that have a lot of strength to stand up for what
they believe."

"Almost everyone out there believes as we do, sir," Patrick said.

"Please sit. I will have some juice brought in for you boys, and maybe a
small snack."

"Thank-you, sir."

"Now, Mr. Daniels, would you care to tell me what you plan on saying to the
Congress?"

"Sir, I would if I knew. Sure, I know that I will speak about the student
strike, but after that I don't know until a question or two have been
asked."

"Great, so it is going to be a surprise to everyone there."

"Very much so."

"Now, as for the other matter, my staff has found that in regard to age
limits on being governor, you have to be over 25. For now, I would take the
nomination for the state school board that you have and go for it. My
office can't help. I do have agent Mason's word that you will have all the
security that you need."

"Thank-you sir, but I don't know if I want to be on the State of Florida's
school board," Malcolm answered.

"No way, dude, you gotta do it. Just think, you could make a lot of changes
for the better," Patrick spoke up.

"He is right, Mr. Daniels. Besides you have already made a name for
yourself and the people of Florida believe in what you're doing, so step up
and run with it."

"Okay, then I guess when I get back I'll have to hold a news conference."

"That you do."

"Patrick, will you be my campaign manager?"

"What? No way dude!"

"Yes, way."

"Okay, I will."

"What about us?" Zeke asked.

"I don't know yet, bro, but I won't leave you out."

"Thanks."

"Mr. Daniels, it is time for you to speak," Senator Montrose said from the
door.

"Okay. Come on, bros, time to get this done."

"Mr. Daniels, your brothers and Mr. Jacobs will be sitting with the
President and Vice President," Montrose said.

"Security?"

"There will be four men outside the door and there are uniformed agents
patrolling outside."

"Thanks," Malcolm said as the VP stood and headed for the door.

As soon as they stepped out into the hall, they were surrounded by his
protection detail. "The VP is on the move," his lead agent said as they
headed for the entrance.

Along the way, other agents joined them. At the front door, Special Agent
Dusty Moore met them. He had everyone stop and wait until the limo could be
brought up. When the beast was in place, Dusty and Ace took control and had
agents line up between the door and the limo.

As soon as the lines were in place, the agents inside got everyone into a
small group and surrounded them. "Listen up," Dusty started.

Malcolm saw Ace then tugged on his arm. "Who's that giving orders, Ace?"

"That's Dusty Moore. He's the Special Agent in Charge of the President's
Security Detail."

"I thought you were," Malcolm said.

"I'm his assistant," Ace replied. "Dusty is a good agent and Bennie really
likes him, so please listen closely."

"All right," Malcolm said.

"When we step out, the agents will lead you to the limo. I don't want you
to stop and look around or leave the circle. Get into the car and be seated
so we can keep you all safe." If any agent should say something to you like
?get down' do it and don't ask questions. Now, are there any questions?"

Zeke raised his hand. "Where's Tonka?"

Malcolm turned red but Dusty took it in stride. "He's working over at the
Senate building. Now, is everyone ready?"

There were no more questions so the group was led out and into the
limo. When the boys got in, they were surprised to see Ben sitting
there. Aaron quickly hopped onto his lap. The VP tried to stop him and
Aaron let out a little scream. "It's all right, Matt," Ben said, letting
Aaron settle onto his lap.

Once everyone was inside, Dusty got behind the wheel and Ace joined
everyone else in the limo. Patrick looked at Ace and asked, "Where's
Bennie?"

"Bennie is in class," Ace replied.

"Class?" Patrick asked, "I thought he was out of school."

"He goes to college. He attends Georgetown University," Ace said, then
continued, "Now, when we arrive, if you see Tonka, don't call him. He's
working and he has a lot to do."

Aaron took that the hardest. "All right, Ace, but we like Tonka."

Ben gave the boy on his lap a little hug. "He likes you boys, too, but
today he has a lot of people to protect."

Aaron was surprised. "Really? He's a busy dog."

"Yes, he is," Ben, said, as the back door opened.

Dusty stuck his head in. "We're here. We'll all go inside like we came
out. Mr. President, if you please."

Ben stepped out followed by the Vice President and then the others. The
agents formed a circle around them and led them inside the Capitol
building.

The agents had everyone encircled as they made their way to the door of the
House Chambers. One of the agents was about to reach for the door when he
heard Tonka growl, then let out a loud bark.

Dusty quickly glanced around then shouted, "GUN! Everyone down."

The agents each grabbed a person, pushed them down and covered them with
their bodies. What was heard next was a blood-curdling scream as Tonka
attacked the gunman. The man was oblivious to the pain and tried to shift
his weapon to his other hand. The agent by the door drew his weapon to fire
but then saw the man go limp. "Situation secure," the agents heard through
their earpieces."

Dusty and Ace started looking at everyone. "Is everyone all right?" Dusty
asked.

Aaron was tightly holding on to Ben's arm and Zeke was huddled against Ace
with his arms around the big man's leg. Jamie was in Ian's arms and Johnny
Hawks and Donnie Osborne were holding Patrick and Malcolm.

Ace pried Zeke's arms off his leg and led him over to Dusty so he could go
to see Malcolm. "Are you alright, buddy?"

"Yeah, just a little shaken," Malcolm replied.

Ben came over. "Can you still speak or do you want to postpone this?"

Malcolm stood up and shook his head. "No, Sir. I've put this off once and I
won't do it again. Ace, who shot him, I didn't hear a thing?"

Just then two agents came walking up. One was carrying a rifle and the
other towered over everyone. Aaron saw the man and screamed. Dusty went
over to the boy and picked him up. "Don't be scared, Aaron, he's one of our
agents, a good guy."

Agent Marshall went over to the boy. "It's all right little one, I won't
let anyone hurt you. My partner took out the bad guy."

"H...he did?" Aaron stuttered.

"He sure did. My name is Marshall, what's yours?"

"Aaron, the boy said.

"Come on, let's get inside," Dusty said.

Dusty opened the door. Walking into the senate hall Malcolm watched as
Montrose led his brothers and Patrick to their seats. Then he watched as
the Speaker of the House stood and spoke: "Ladies and gentlemen, the
President of the United States."

After "Hail To The Chief" played and the Congress stopped applauding, the
Speaker took over again. "Welcome, Mr. President. This session is now open,
however, I ask the members not to start questions until I have cleared the
floor. You all know that this is a history making moment. The press has
been allowed in for the first half of the session while we all sit back and
listen to Mr. Malcolm Daniels. Afterwards, you may ask questions, but I ask
that you wait until he finishes speaking. Now, please welcome Mr. Malcolm
Daniels."

Everyone stood and applauded as Malcolm started walking to the center of
the speaker's lectern. Malcolm slowly turned and looked at all the people
sitting in the chamber gazing back at him. He saw Patrick and his brothers
smiling. Aaron was sitting on Ben's knee and Zeke was on Patrick's.

"Good afternoon every one, Zeke, Aaron I hope you're both comfortable."

"Yup," Aaron squeaked, getting a good laugh from everyone in the chamber.

"That's good. Now, ladies and gentlemen, we all know why I am here. You, as
I do, want the student strike to end. The hold up isn't on the part of the
students; it is the failure of those in charge to make a few simple
changes. I can't understand why when people get older they seem to think
that children my age or that of my little brothers has nothing to say about
what is happening to them and around them. Can you think back to when you
were my age? Didn't you want people to hear what you had to say? Were there
not things you wanted to see changed? I bet there were, but you were always
told to be silent, that children should be seen but not heard, and that's
how a lot of you all are today and that's sad. If you have children, listen
to them. You'd be surprised what they have to say and what's on their
minds.

"Times have changed. Today you have me standing up here talking to you and
you are listening. Whether you hear me or not is up to you. You have all
heard or read about the few changes the students have asked for, and like
spoiled brats you sit here and argue over them. Well, stop it! Think about
what you're all doing to the children of our country. They are ones who
really want to be in school; they are the ones that want to better
themselves. Are you all so scared of change that you sit here and wet your
pants at the thought of it happening?

"Did you all sit back and wet yourselves when the schools integrated, or
went co-ed. You know what I think? I think you're all scared of your own
shadows. Well, it's time to grow up and pass the changes that the people
are asking for so we can all get on with our lives.

"I thank you all for the time you have given me here, and I hope and pray
that school starts again soon. Again thank-you."

Everyone applauded as Malcolm stepped back from the
microphone. "Mr. Daniels," the House Speaker spoke up, "all of us heard you
speak here today and at your rallies, fighting for changes to be
made. Today I think I have heard the most passionate speech so far, and I
thank you for joining us. Now I would like to open the floor for
questions. Do you think you can answer them?"

"I really won't know until they have been asked."

"Very well, then the floor is open, Mr. Vice President, you have a
question?"

"I do. Mr. Daniels, do you feel that if we make these changes that the
strike will end?"

"Yes, sir, I do."

"Mr. Daniels, I am from the state of Iowa. Why did you call for the
resignation of the governor and the state legislature?"

"Sir, if you were handed over a hundred thousand signatures asking for a
change to be made, would you ignore them?"

"Why, no, I would look into the complaint and try to fix it."

"Then, sir, you have just answered your own question."

"Well, I am surprised; you turned it around on me."

"Mr. Daniels, I am from the state of California. Do you really think that
we don't know what is best for the people?"

"Our government is supposed to be of the people, by the people and for the
people. Are the students not people? As for what you know or don't know, I
can't say, although you sit here and fight like fools over something simple
that you know should be done, something that would be best for the
people. So I would say that no, I don't think you know what is best and
that you don't truly represent the people."

Another hand quickly shot up. The speaker called on him. "Mr. Daniels, I'm
Senator Buford Mullins from the great state of Louisiana."

"Yes, sir?" Malcolm

"I don't have a question but rather a statement. I've listened to every one
of your speeches and your rhetoric here today and I've come to the
conclusion that you're nothing but a spoiled brat."

< BANG, BANG, BANG >

The speaker banged his gavel. "Senator Mullins, you are out of order."

As soon as the speaker got those words out Ben stood. "Senator Mullins,
I'll see you in my office immediately."

"The House Chamber was buzzing at the senator's words. As the man walked
past, Jamie and Aaron were struggling to get out of their seats but Ben had
a tight grip on Aaron. The VP leaned down to them. "Calm down, boys. He's
in a lot of trouble."

Jamie was in tears. "Malcolm's not a brat. He's right, and I should know."

The VP held his arms out and Jamie slid over and sat on the man's
lap. "Shhh now, Jamie, don't cry. Now what is it you know?"

"I...I was a bully. I took part in beating up Malcolm and Patrick and I'm
really sorry for it. I've apologized to Malcolm but I'm not worthy to be
here with him or even to be his friend."

Jamie was totally inconsolable. Patrick leaned over and rubbed Jamie's
hair. "Jamie, we've forgiven you, and you've really changed a lot."

The VP was cuddling the crying boy when Senator Mullins returned. "Well,
well, it looks like the brat brought other brats with him."

Before Ben could say or do anything, Jamie flew off the VP's lap and got in
the Senator' face. "Why don't you find a hole to slither into?" Jamie spat.

"Why you..." the senator said and reached back to strike the child when he
felt a hand pull his arm behind his back.

Jamie looked up and there was Ian putting cuffs on the senator. "You're
under arrest for attempted child abuse. You have the right to remain
silent. If you give up that right, anything you say can and will be used
against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an
attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for
you. If you choose to answer questions without an attorney, you can stop at
anytime and an attorney will be appointed for you. Knowing and
understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing
to answer my questions without an attorney present?

Ian spun the man around. "Let go of me, you filthy redskin."

Jamie went to hit the man but Ian looked at him. "No, Jamie, he's not worth
it."

"Yeah, I might get some fatal disease," he said, causing everyone around to
break out into a laugh.

Ian led the Senator out of the room and turned him over to US Marshals.

Outside in the hallways, the Secret Service agents were busy with the
medical examiner and the head of the forensics team. Dr. Sergio Valez was
looking at the body when one of the agents came over. "Hey, old man."

Agent Ellis heard the agent's comment. "That's Dr. Valez to you, Agent, and
don't you ever forget it."

"Oh shit, man, I'm sorry Agent Ellis," the agent said.

Ellis went over to the man and towered over him. "Don't apologize to me."

The agent went to walk over to Sergio then < SLAP >

"I apologize, Dr. Valez. I'm new and we haven't met."

Sergio looked at the agent. "I suggest you ask before shoving your foot
into your mouth."

"Yes, doctor, I will." The man said walking away.

Dusty was watching his former NCIS team working and they hadn't lost a
step. "Do we have an ID on this bastard?"

Sergio rolled the man over and found his wallet. "Yes, Dusty, I have. It
seems his name is Donald Rogers."

"Dizzy, help the doctor get his prints please. I want to run them and see
if he has a record. Sergio, can you get me a blood sample so we can run his
DNA?"

"Be glad to, Dusty," he said.

After they collected all the evidence they could, Ace had the janitorial
crew get to work so the blood and mess could be cleaned up. He didn't want
there to be anything left as a reminder of the events that had transpired
that day.

Three hours later, after a quick limo ride back to the White House, his
brothers and Patrick joined Malcolm as Ace led them back to the Oval
Office. As they walked in, Malcolm saw that the Vice President was there
along with a few others. "Mr. Daniels, may I congratulate you on a
wonderful time. Never have I heard anyone tell the members that they were
brats or that they would pee themselves if faced with change. Young man,
when the President told me that you were going to speak your mind, I didn't
believe him, but I see I was wrong. I do hope that what you have done today
will force the Congress to pass these changes."

"Sir, I can only pray that it does."

"Now, Mr. Daniels, there is a dinner waiting for us all, so please bring
your brothers and your friends."

"Yummy!" Aaron squealed.

The rest of the day the five boys stayed at the White House, every so often
running into members of the Congress. By six, the two younger boys were
tired, so Donnie and Ace got them loaded up and headed back to the
residence. Aaron fell asleep leaning against Patrick's shoulder.

Friday morning the boys flew back to Florida. Their plane had just landed
and the door opened when a man wearing a Naples police uniform stormed
halfway up the plane's stairs yelling. "Malcolm Daniels you are under
arrest for fleeing..." he started to say when all of a sudden he felt the
barrel of an AR15 touch the back of his head.

"Now back up nice and easy," a Secret Service agent said, not in the mood
for games. "And my finger is getting itchy."

"My name is Captain James Harris," the cop said trying not to step on his
tongue.

Just then Tony came up. "Let me see some ID."

"Listen, whoever you are, my uniform is my ID," the cop said as he started
to turn around, but he felt the barrel of the rifle poke him again.

"I said ID - NOW!" Tony shouted

The man slowly reached for his wallet but his hand stopped on his
weapon. The Secret Service Agent slapped his hand then removed the gun from
its holster. "You won't be needing that."

Tony spun the cop around and stared at him. "I don't know who the funk you
are, but you're not Captain Harris."

"Listen, you dumb suit," the cop started but was interrupted. "Rosetti,
what the hell are you doing in one of my uniforms?" a voice shouted.

Tony looked and recognized the real Captain Harris. "Oh, so you're Captain
Harris?" Tony said to Rosetti as he drew back and let him have it right in
the jaw sending him sprawling onto the tarmac.

With all the boys still in the plane, Tony walked in and handing Malcolm a
vest. "From now on I want you wearing this," Tony stated.

"How the heck am I supposed to put it on? I'm not allowed to have my arm
out of my sling," Malcolm replied with a smile.

Smiling back, Tony gently cuffed Malcolm's head, and then helped him out of
his sling and shirt. Tony showed Malcolm how to put the vest on, how to use
the straps and helped him back into his shirt and sling. Once Malcolm was
dressed, Tony led everyone off the plane and over to the Hummer. "Tony, how
come there are more agents around? I thought there would be just three,"
Malcolm asked from the back.

"I was told by Ace that I had to have more people around you from now
on. Don't worry, and it also means that if you go out there will be at
least four agents with you, and more if your whole family goes out."

Back home, they unloaded the luggage from the Hummer along with the pet
carrier. When Richard first saw the puppy he was afraid that it would hurt
Aaron. That thought vanished when he saw the pup move over and stand in
front of the boy when Morrison and Tony came up. "Mr. Tony, this is my
puppy," Aaron said with a smile. "Mr. Hawks give him to me."

"Well, Aaron, he looks really nice. Can you tell me his name?"

"His name is Midnight. I wanted to call him Waffles, but Mr. Hawks said it
wouldn't sound right."

"I think Midnight is a really good name. Now, why don't you take him around
back and let him run around for a bit. Morrison, you and Marsten give
Patrick a ride home."

Malcolm hugged and kissed Patrick good-bye. "Call me later, okay."

"I will, but I probably can't come over until Monday," Patrick replied as
he followed Marsten to the car.

Malcolm, you, Donnie, and I have to go over to the Naples PD. They have
some questions they want to ask you," Tony told everyone.

"Okay. Let me get my bag in and call the lawyer, and then we can go.

"Malcolm, we won't be going over today, I want you to rest. We can go over
tomorrow. I will phone Captain Harris and let him know," Tony said.

Uh, Dad, where's Papa? I figured he would be here to meet us," Malcolm
asked.

"Your grandpa had a doctor's appointment and then he was going to get some
food in the house, since you three seem to never stop eating," Richard
laughed.

That evening was one of relaxation and Malcolm enjoyed playing with his
brothers. CNN had given two hours over to the speech Malcolm had given
before Congress, and that was about to start, so everyone was sitting and
waiting. "Good evening, Eric Stobbel for CNN and Channel two News. Tonight
we are spending time on a special meeting, but not just any. Tonight you
are going to watch fifteen-year-old Malcolm Daniels as he speaks and
answers questions of both the Senate and House of Representatives. We will
not be able to air the whole four hours of the time he spent there, but you
will hear his speech, and a lot of the questions asked. Later, Larry King
will speak with a few members of Congress and get their views on what
Mr. Daniels has done, and is still doing. So sit back and watch our modern
day folk hero as he works his magic."
