I woke up the next morning with the phone ringing. Mark answered it.

"Hello."

"Good morning, Mom."

"Sure."

"Okay."

"Have fun."

"I won't go back to sleep. I am up."

"Goodbye."

"What time is it?" I asked.

"7 o'clock, that was Mom, and she said that we should order room service
for breakfast. Dad is going to pick us up out front at 9 o'clock. Mom is
not going with us today. She said that she had enough of Dad last night."

"Okay, I am going to jump in the shower. Why don't you order some
breakfast?"

"Sounds good."

I jumped in the shower and about five minutes later Mark joined me. One
nice thing about taking a shower in a hotel is we did not run out of hot
water. We spent about 30 minutes washing and loving each other, and not
necessarily in that order. We got dressed and our breakfast arrived. It
was good. We went down to the lobby about 8:50 and went outside. It was
cold, I would say about 25 degrees, and the wind was strong.

Mark's dad pulled up in a pickup truck that was about as old as my Van. It
had a construction company sign on the door. We climbed in and Mr. Adams
said, "Good morning."

"What do you have planned for us today, Dad?" Mark asked.

"It is funny. I have been in this town 8 years and have not ever gone
sightseeing. I thought that we could go to the Museum of Science and
Industry this morning, and then go to the top of the Sears Tower to the sky
deck. How does that sound, guys?"

"That sounds like fun, Dad." Mark answered.

We got on Lake Shore Drive and drove south to the Museum of Science and
Industry. It was very crowded but we had a good time. They had a coal
mine that we went through and a WWII German submarine. There were many
other things of interest for us to see. We spent about 6 hours there but
could have spent another whole day there.

Mr. Adams decided to have a late lunch/early dinner and we went to a pizza
place near downtown. I got my first taste of deep dish Chicago-style
pizza. It was very good. After we ate, Mr. Adams spoke up.

"Boys, I had a long talk with Grace yesterday. You see, I always thought
that homosexuals were guys that really wanted to be girls. I thought that
they wanted to wear girls' clothes and take girl hormones, giving them
breasts. And then have a sex change operation and become girls. I could
not understand how you boys could be homosexuals and not act like the gays
I had seen on TV. Your mother explained to me that everybody's sexuality
is different. That you can't put a label on people in general; just
because a few act a certain way doesn't mean that everyone acts that way.
Mike, you seem like a fine young man and if Mark is in love with you, then
I love you too. And Mark, if Mike makes you happy, then I am happy for
you."

"I am most definitely in love with Mike, Dad, and it is not about sex. It
is about love, trust, hope, and commitment. First, we are best friends.
Second, we are together 24 hours a day. Third, I am committed to
protecting Mike until he finishes high school. Fourth, I trust Mike not to
hurt me. And, last but not least, I hope that we can spend the rest of our
lives together."

"I feel the same way about Mark. Wherever he decides to go to college, I
plan on going to the same school. If Mark's going to be a doctor, then I
will stay in school until I get a PHD also. If they change the law and two
men can marry each other, I will marry him. We have talked about adopting
kids and everything. We are never going to let anything or anyone come
between us."

"What about sex, Mark? With you being a deputy, is it not illegal for you
to have sex?"

"Well, you seem to be putting me on the spot, Dad. Let me put you on the
spot. Have you ever been involved in a circle jerk with your friends when
you were our age?"

"Yes, I guess I was."

"Have you ever jerked off someone else?"

"Yes, I guess I have done that too. It is normal for boys to experiment."

"What about oral sex?"

"NO, I never did that."

"Well, we haven't done that yet either. Sam said that, under state law,
only anal sex is against the law. Oral sex is considered mutual
masturbation. As long as both parties agree, and don't do it in public,
it's not against the law. Mike and I spend most of our time making out.
We get so excited that it never takes much time to get relief. Sex is by
no means the most important part of our relationship. I am happy just to
go to sleep in Mike's arms. Do you understand what I am saying, Dad?"

"Of course I do. I have been in love too. I just don't quite understand
how you could be in love with another boy."

"Dad, do you love me?"

"Of course I do, Mark."

"Then I guess you love a boy. The only difference is that we are not
sexually attracted to each other. Dad, in health class they taught us
that, at some point, everyone is attracted to someone of their own sex.
Dad, have you ever been attracted to another guy?"

"Once or twice perhaps, but I put it out of my mind. I would not choose to
be that way."

"My attraction to other guys is not a choice. I have never been attracted
to girls and they hound me all the time. Perhaps someday some girl will
attract me but I doubt it. And if one did, I would put it out of my mind
because I am in love with Mike. When I look at a picture of a nude girl,
Dad, it does nothing for me. That doesn't mean that I don't have the
capacity to love girls. Just not in a sexual way. Does that make sense to
you, Dad?"

"I must say that I do feel better about the whole thing after talking to
you boys. Not only are you big and strong but you are smart too. Your
mother told me about the same thing last night but I understand better,
hearing it from you. And I love and accept you for who you are and not
what you are."

"As far as you going to college, Mark, I have saved up $15,000 in a trust
in your name for college. I hope to have about $20,000 by the time you
start. I know that is not enough but it might help. She said that will
keep me out of trouble for now but I had better come up with some more
later."

"Dad, you did think of me all these years. Perhaps my dream of becoming a
doctor will come true. I love you so much."

I was so proud of Mark and the way he handled his father. Just six weeks
ago, he was asking me how I knew that I was gay. And now he almost had his
father admitting that he was somewhat bisexual. For the first time I saw
just how much Mark had grown.

We left the pizza place and went up the Sears Tower. It was a clear day
and we could see Lake Michigan and the whole city. We watched the sun go
down together from on top of one of the world's tallest buildings.

After we left the Sears Tower, we went back to the hotel. We sat in the
lobby and got to know each other better. I talked about my family. Mark
told his dad about Ron and his boxing and about the six guys he arrested.
He told him about this guy in a car crash and how he saved his life.
Before we knew it, Mark's dad had to go. He told Mark to keep in touch and
they hugged and said good-bye.

We went back up to our room and knocked on Mrs. Adams' door.

"Hi, boys, did you have a good day?"

"Yes, Mom, we went the Museum of Science and Industry. Then we had some
deep-dish pizza. It was very good. Then we went up the Sears Tower and
got to see the city. After coming back to the hotel we had a good talk in
the lobby. Dad seems to be accepting us. He wants us to keep in touch."

"I am glad to hear that. I went to the Field Museum. It has lots of old
things, like dinosaur bones and mummies and stuff like that. I had a good
time. Do you boys want to go to dinner?"

"Sure, what do you have in mind?"

"I was thinking Chinese. Chinatown is not far from here and we don't need
to dress up or anything. There are several really good Chinese restaurants
there."

"That sounds great. What do you think, Mike?"

"That does sound good. Let's go."

It was already about 8:00 o'clock and we were hungry again. We went down
to the lobby and someone brought Mark's truck to the front of the building.
It took us about 15 minutes to get to Chinatown and we parked the truck.
About a block away we found a great restaurant and went inside. The food
was really great. During dinner we told Mrs. Adams about Mark's talk with
his dad. She seemed really glad that we were able to explain things to
him. She also said she really did not want to see him again. She was
quite bitter that he had never bothered to contact her.

When we left the restaurant, Mark noticed that two Asian guys were
following us.

He stopped and turned and said, "If you are looking for trouble, you just
found it."

"No trouble, just your money," one guy said, pulling a knife.

"You two little guys and that knife don't scare me," Mark said with force
in his voice.

"Is that so? Well, look behind you."

Mark glanced over his shoulder and saw two more with baseball bats. Mark
pulled out his gun, took off the safety, pulled back the hammer, and handed
me the gun.

"If they move, shoot them. Shoot the guy with the knife first," Mark said
and he turned his attention to the other two.

They both lunged at me at the same time. I shot the guy with the knife in
the shoulder and he fell to the ground. I did not have time to shoot the
other one, so I hit him as hard in the throat as I could with the gun
(something that I learned from Ron). He also fell to the ground, grasping
his throat. I turned around and Mark had the other two lying on the
ground, bloody and beaten, and was putting handcuffs on them. He then
asked if we were OK. Both his mom and I said yes. He took his gun back
and put on the safety. He then put it away. He first handcuffed the guy I
shot and checked on the guy I hit in the throat.

"You hit him a little too hard, Mike. He is not breathing. He has a
broken larynx."

Mark picked up the knife and cut into the guy's throat. Then he took out
an ink pen from his pocket and took out the ink cartridge and jammed it
into the guy's throat. He started breathing again through the tube.

"He'll live. Mom, do you have a hanky in your purse?"

"Yes, here you go."

Mark handed me the hanky and told me to hold it on the wound of the guy I
shot and apply pressure.

"How many pairs of handcuffs do you carry, Mark?"

"It is good to be prepared."

About this time, Chicago's finest showed up. Mark pulled out his badge and
identified himself as a deputy sheriff. Mark explained to them what
happened. They were very happy. They said that they had been looking for
these guys for quite some time. They were guilty of many armed robberies.
The ambulance arrived and the EMTs were impressed with Mark's first aid.
They said that the guy I hit in the throat would have died if Mark had not
acted.

Apparently, while I was busy, Mark had punched out the other two before
they even could try to swing their bats.

I guess in a town like this news travels fast because before we knew it, TV
and newspaper reporters were shining lights on us and pointing cameras and
microphones at us and asking us all kind of questions. Mark told me not to
tell them anything too personal, like where we live or our complete names.

After they finished, the police escorted us down to the local police
station. It was not far away. We made statements and they said we might
have to come back if it goes to trial. The police captain walked in and
shook our hands. "There is a phone call for you guys." We went into his
office. Mark took the call.

"Hello."

"Mayor Daley."

"Yes, sir."

"Thank you, sir."

"Ok, sir." And he handed the phone to me.

"You must be Mike," Mayor Daley said.

"Yes sir, that is me."

"I just caught the 11:00 o'clock news andd I want to say you were very
brave. I want to give you boys a citation. Give me your phone number and
I will call you and let you know when I want you to come receive your
citation."

"Okay, Mr. Mayor, sir, it is 987-654-4321."

"It will be several weeks before I call and the City of Chicago will pay to
fly you into town and for your hotel and food while you are here. Where
are you staying tonight?"

"We are staying at the Drake."

"Nice hotel. I will call the City Manager in the morning and take care of
your bill. It is the least that I can do. I have been on the police for
six months to get these guys. Not only did you get them into custody but
you also saved one of their lives. If either one of you ever needs
something from me, just let me know. Okay?"

"Yes, sir, and thank you, Mr. Mayor, sir.

"Be sure to pick up a paper tomorrow. I am going to call them and make sure
that you are front page. Well, it is getting late. I will let you boys
get back to your hotel. Enjoy your stay in Chicago."

"We will be leaving in the morning. We had a great time here. I am
looking forward to returning."

"I am just sorry that you had to see the darker side of the city. There
are many good people in this city, such as you. Have a safe ride home and
I will talk to you soon. Good-bye."

"Good-bye."

It was almost midnight when we got back to the hotel. We said goodnight to
Mrs. Adams, and the phone had this red light blinking. I didn't know what
it meant so I called the front desk. They said that I had a message. It
was Mark's dad and he wanted us to call him. Mark called him. Apparently
he had seen us on the news and was concerned. Mark told him everything,
including the call from the Mayor. He was real excited when he heard that
we would be coming back to Chicago. I thought about calling my parents but
it was after one o'clock in the morning. I had not called them since we
had arrived but I decided to wait until tomorrow.

Mark and I were really keyed up and didn't feel like going to bed. So we
talked some.

"I can't believe that I almost killed two people today."

"If you hadn't acted the way you did, you might have been killed. Or even
my mom. I could not imagine either one of you dead. You acted in
self-defense. This time you were able to help me. I am so proud of you,
Mike. I love you so much."

"When I saw those two coming at me, I just acted. I did not even think.
It all happened so fast."

"That is the way it was for me too. All the years of training, I don't
even think about it. I just did it. That is why it is important to know
how to defend yourself. If the guys had guns, it would have been
different. They had us outmanned but we had them outgunned. I could not
have handled it by myself. I need you, Mike."

"I just don't feel like a hero."

"How would you feel if my mom or I had died?"

"Terrible."

"You saved our lives tonight, Mike. And more important, you saved your own
life tonight. I don't think I could stand even the thought of you not
around. I am sure that I would survive but I would no longer be alive
inside."

"I guess you do have a point there. Come here and kiss me." We started
making out and the next thing I know we were undressing. We went into the
shower and took about an hour. We cleaned each other several times with
lots of soap and friction. You have got to squeeze really hard to manage
friction with a soapy hand. It was lots of fun. Finally we made our way
to bed. It was almost 2:30 and we fell asleep in each other's arms.
