Friday finally came and we were all excited, two weeks off without
school. They forecasted snow so we stayed home and didn't go to Mark's
mom's. After dinner Sally and Jeff were glued to the TV, watching corny
Christmas shows. I hope I get a TV for my room for Christmas even though a
TV doesn't do me any good without a second satellite converter. We can
only get about 3 channels out here without satellite.

Dad has a family tradition of not putting up the Christmas tree until late
Christmas Eve after we all go to bed. He keeps all the gifts at the store
and picks them up late Christmas Eve. So we go to bed Christmas Eve with
the house being plain and we get up Christmas Day with the house all
decorated and filled with presents. This year Dad plans on Mark, his mom,
and me helping. I can tell they are really excited, having two kids in the
house.

Jeff can fool you until he opens his mouth. He is about 5' and looks
almost like a teenager. But when he talks, you can tell he is still very
much a kid. He still believes in Santa Claus and stuff like that. He
really misses his mother and talks about her all the time. He says that
his father was never home and when he did see him he was always too busy to
spend time with him. Jeff is a touchy-feely kind of boy. He is not happy
unless he is holding our hand or sitting on someone's lap. He is
constantly bugging Mark and me to sleep with us.

Sally is a very well behaved little girl. She has adjusted quickly to our
family. She is very affectionate like her brother. Her closest attachment
is to my mom. Being the only other female in a house full of guys is the
main reason. She also shows lots of affection toward her brother and Mark.

Most of the snow from two weeks ago has melted. It started snowing about
7:00 PM and they are forecasting 6 to 10 inches. It's going to get cold
after the snow so it looks like we are going to get a white Christmas.

Mark and I had no interest in the TV show so we went upstairs to our room
and surfed the net. We were just about to get into some action when there
was a knock at our door.

"Who is it?"

"It's Jeff, can I come in?"

I closed out all the windows on my computer and we adjusted ourselves.

"Come in."

Jeff came in and sat down on our bed.

"I was talkin' to the twins today and we were talkin' and stuff and I asked
them why you guys don't have girlfriends and they started giggling and
stuff and I asked them why and they just giggled more and said to ask you.
So I asked some other guys and they said Mike don't like girls. They
didn't know Mark."

"Why all this interest in us having girlfriends?" Mark asked.

"Because there is someone that I really like and I have some questions."

"What did you think when you were told that I don't like girls?"

"I don't think anything about it at all. I mean, I don't like girls
either."

I think Mark and I put two and two together at the same time. We looked at
each other at the same time and grinned.

"This doesn't have anything to do with our ski trip next week, does it?"
Mark asked.

Jeff turned all red and looked at the floor. We couldn't help it, we
started laughing.

"Why are you guys laughin' at me?"

"Jeff, we are not laughing at you. You remember two days ago when you
started laughing at us because our faces turned red and you thought it was
funny?"

"Yea."

"You had the same look on your face and we were only getting even. Now
what do you want to know?"

"How do you know when you like someone?"

"Aren't you a little young to be liking someone in that way?" Mark asked.

"I don't think so, I liked someone when I was his age and even younger," I
stated. "Jeff, you get this funny feeling in your stomach and you have a
million things that you want to say but your mouth don't seem to work
right. You think about this person all the time and you miss them when
they are not around. They call it puppy love. Is that how you feel,
Jeff?"

"Yes, that's how I feel."

Mark got a concerned look on his face. I grabbed his hand and reassured
him.

"Jeff, have you ever played around with other boys?" I asked.

"Do you promise not to tell anyone?"

"We promise," I replied.

"Mark?"

"We promise," Mark said.

"When I was in Cub Scouts we went on a camp-out and my friend and I shared
the same pup tent. We showed each other our wieners and we played with
each other and we got boners. Then he took my boner in his mouth and it
felt so good and I did the same to him. We never did it again because he
said he felt like he did somethin' wrong."

Mark looked a little shocked and I squeezed his hand.

"It took a lot of guts to tell us that, Jeff. Do you feel like you did
something wrong, Jeff?"

"I never really thought about it. It was just fun."

"Have you been thinking about doing stuff like that with this person you
like, Jeff?"

Jeff looked at the ground and I looked at Mark and held a finger up to my
lips and mouthed, 'We'll talk later.' He nodded his head.

"Yes, but I feel different. With my friend it was just fun but I feel like
I want to do it for another reason. I can't explain it. Do you know what
I mean?"

"Of course we do, Jeff. You're starting to grow up. When will you be 10,
Jeff?"

"In six months."

"How old were you when you entered puberty, Mark?"

"I was 12 and a half."

"You still have about 3 years of being a kid, Jeff. I'm not going to tell
you what to do but if you're not careful you could get hurt. When I was
your age I had a special friend too. We don't talk anymore. He got to a
certain age and he decided that he didn't like me any more in that way. I
was real upset. I was just a kid and I didn't understand why he didn't
like me any more. When I became 13 I changed too. I read a bunch of
books, trying to better understand myself."

"How are you going to feel if things work out with this person and you have
fun together and stuff and then six months or a year from now he decides
that he is no longer interested in a little boy? How is he going to feel
if you two really hit it off and become friends for the next three years
and you become a man and can only think about girls and leave your friend?
One thing that is for sure is three or four years from now you are going to
grow up and become a man like Mark and me. Between now and then you will
go through many changes and like many different people. I suggest that you
enjoy being a kid and forget about all this puppy love stuff. Do you
understand, Jeff?"

"I understand some of what you said. I know that when I get older I'll be
able to make babies and stuff and that I'm suppose'ta like girls but I
can't help how I feel. I have one more question. I see you two are
holding hands and I've seen you look at each other the same way I look at
K', I mean the person I like, and I was just wondering, do you two love
each other?"

Despite Jeff's little slip, our jaws were on the floor and our eyes got
big. I didn't know what to think or say. I looked at Mark for help.

"What difference does it make?" Mark asked.

"None. It's just that I have told you stuff about me and stuff and I trust
you with my secrets and I'm not stupid and you can trust me with yours and
stuff."

"Will you make your best promise not to tell anyone except Mama Amy and
Papa Greg, even if someone else brings it up?"

"Wow, Mama Amy and Papa Greg knows! Yes, I promise."

"Even with Ken?"

"Yes."

"Even with the twins?"

"Yes, yes, I promise."

"Your biggest, bestest promise, hope to die, stick a needle in your eye
promise?"

"Stick a needle in my eye, hope to die promise!"

"And you won't tell your sister?"

"Yes, yes, yes, I mean no, no, no."

"Mike and I are just really good friends."

Jeff got really sad looking and looked like he was going to cry. Then Mark
did something that totally surprised me. He turned and pulled me to my
feet and scooped me up in his arms and kissed me passionately on the lips.

"And I love him very much."

Jeff jumped up on the bed and started jumping up and down, saying, "I knew
it, I knew it, I knew it."

"Calm down, Jeff, we don't want to get Mama Amy and Papa Greg up here.
There is something I want to talk to you about. First, I don't approve of
a boy your age playing around with another boy. But I'm not your dad and
I'm not going to tell you what to do. Second, don't tell anyone that you
have. It is not unusual for a boy your age to fool around, but if the
other kids at school find out, you will be in lots of trouble and they
might even take you away from Mama and Papa Stevens. Third, you are not
ready for a relationship like Mike and I have. Enjoy being a kid. Having
a crush on someone is all right but I don't want to see you get hurt. When
I was your age, someone I loved very much left me. I'm just now getting
over it. I was crushed. It was like my life was over. If it were not for
my mom, I don't know what I would have done. You can talk to Mike or me
anytime you like. You can also trust Papa Greg, he will understand. Don't
be in such a hurry to grow up. Do you understand?"

"I think so. It would be just like losing my parents all over again. I
would hate it if they took me away from Mama and Papa Stevens. Thanks for
trusting me, Mark, and I won't tell anyone."

"That's good, now Mike and I have some things we need to talk about."

Jeff left us and I shut and locked the door. I wrapped my arms around Mark
and said, "I'm so proud of you."

"Why?"

"That's the second person you have told about us."

"He already knew. If we didn't tell him, we would have been asking for
trouble."

"So what do you think?" I asked.

"Kids today grow up so fast. I can't believe how much they know. With
their knowledge of computers and the information available, it scares me to
think about it," Mark replied.

"What do you think we should do?"

"I meant what I said to him. I realize that the harder we try to control
Jeff, the more out of control he might become. How did your Dad handle you
at that age?"

"He didn't say anything to me. I guess he figured it was my business. I
only found out two months ago that he knew. If Jeff plays around, he will
know. I have found that you can't get one over on my dad."

"It hit me like a bolt of lighting that he likes Ken. Do you think that we
should say anything to him?"

"It hit me like a bolt of lighting too and, no, I don't think we should say
anything at this time. Chances are he already knows that Jeff has a crush
on him. There is 5 years difference in their ages. I don't know if Ken
would be interested in a pre-pubescent or not. He is barely in puberty
himself. We can keep an eye on them and, if we see something happening
between them, we will talk to Ken. What do you think?"

"I think it is just a passing thing. By the time Jeff reaches puberty, Ken
will be in college. Then, like you said, Jeff might decide that he likes
girls. My biggest concern is that Ken is just going to use Jeff to get off
and leave him hanging," Mark said.

"I thought of that. I guess we will also need to trust Ken."

"I know this much. Jeff is going to be a big boy in a few years and will
be able to take care of himself. In the meantime we need to keep an eye on
him. I would be happier if he's going to play around, that he would do it
with the twins or someone his own age. I can tell you this much, if he
uses him, he is going to have to face us."

"Love is a funny thing, Mark. For all we know, Jeff and Ken might be meant
to be together. It could be true love. Twenty-five years from now, all
four of us could be sitting around, laughing about the tale of this
conversation. I will not be the one to stand in the way of true love. I
think if anyone should be open-minded about a relationship between Jeff and
Ken, it should be us. We hardly know either one, but I do like both of
them. And if they find happiness together, I for one am not going to stand
in their way."

"That's a good point, Mike. When Ken is 45 and Jeff is 40, how much
difference is their age going to make? I have never been a brother before
and I guess I'm being a bit overprotective. If something does develop
between them, we can have a talk with Ken and let him know to be careful
without being too overbearing."

Mark and I talked some more and finally went to bed. I had a feeling that
our Christmas vacation was going to be something we would never forget.
