My Modified Memory
Chapter 4 The Invitation

After the last period of the day, where Mel eyed Van with a very curious
glare, the two walked towards the lockers to retrieve some things then
they'll go to the mall to have a good week ender. Yet Ivan doubted that Mel
will leave him alone after he said that he and super stud Daniel Lynol has
some things in common.

"Come on, Van," said Mel pleadingly, "Give!"

"Give what?" said Van innocently.

"Oh don't start to act cute! What did you and Dan have in common?"

"That's me to know and for you to find out."

"Grrrrr!"

"That won't work," said Van after closing his locker. Then he led the way
out of the campus. Melissa was just right behind him. After halting a cab,
they got on and sat quietly. Van started a conversation but Mel won't
participate.

"Now what?" said Van, "you're trying to black mail me by not talking to me
all night?"

"Who said it's just for tonight?" said Mel curtly, and then she stared out
of the window.

"But I can't tell you because those things are just, you know, nerdy things
and Daniel doesn't want them spreading around."

"So you don't think I will keep my mouth shut?!"

"I trust you Mel but Daniel made me promise," said Van trying very hard not
to smile because of his another good performance. "This is the only way that
I think I will be able to get close to him, yah know, keeping his trust. And
if I tell you the things he told me, that will look like I can't keep a
secret or something. I don't want him going away."

Mel slowly turned and faced Van. She knows that he's some kind of acting but
she knows some of Van's words were legit.

"Fine. Tell me when you're ready. But don't expect I won't remember all your
debts."

Mall:

"So where do you want to go know?" ask Van to his friend.

"I don't know. Let's go to the book store and see if there's some
interesting read."

The bookstore is the favorite hang out of the two. Mel and Van are
practically bookworms and biblio-addicts. The looks in their faces in
finding interesting books to read are priceless.

After scanning some pocketbooks, Mel turned to Van with solemn eyes.

"You're going to get hurt, you know," said Mel.

Van stared at his friend. At first not understanding but then realized what
Mel meant.

"I know. Everyone of us needs to get hurt from time to time," said Van,
"Pain is a part of being a human."

"Don't give me that philosophical crap. I don't want my friends getting
hurt. Especially not you," said Mel after putting a hardbound book to its
aisle again. "Pain can kill you know!"

Van just chuckled, "Feeling pain is better than being numb. You should
know."

"Oh don't get there. This is about you not me," said Mel.

"Sorry," mumbled Van.

"Oh it's alright. Ryan is probably gay anyway."

"What? How can you tell?"

(Ryan is the first boy Melissa fell in love with but when she told him how
she felt, he got cold and ignored Mel's existence. Then he keeps giving
snide comments about how Melissa is so in love with him.)

"Because he keeps ignore my beautiful body!" said Mel in a joking voice.
That made Van laugh.

"Well," said Van teasingly, "Ryan is cute. I would like to get my hands on
those tight sweet bu-"

"Oh for god sake!" said Mel also laughing now, "Restrain yourself!"

After a hearty laugh that made some shoppers turn and stare curiously at
them, Van and Mel got out of the store. The two decided to buy some sundaes
and just sit in the mall benches.

"Well, our favorite spot is free," Mel commented, after a lady with two kids
got off the bench. The best friends hurriedly sat to the available space.
After a while, they just eat their ice creams and watch the mall patrons
come and go. But after maybe three minutes of silence. . .

"Oh my god! Ivan and Mel on a date?!!!!" said a voice from behind them. The
best friends turned their heads to look who spoke. It was Katrina Betley
with Melody Harold and Maricar Shall. They were theater members in their
last year of high school.

"Hey!" said Van and Mel in unison.

"That is not permitted!" said Melody yet still smiling, "You know that
theater members aren't suppose to be "more than friendly" with each other."

"This isn't what you think it is!" said Mel laughing nearly falling in her
sit after what Melody has said.

"What? I'm not that bad looking!" said Van indignantly acting as though
Mel's laughing offended him.

"Oh shut up you!" said Mel now wiping tears of laughter from his eyes.

"Oh seriously," now that's Maricar, "Are the two of you a couple?"

"NO!" said Van and Mel together, then they look at each other and laughed so
loud that some people looked startled.

"What's so funny?" asked Katrina looking at the two with a very confused
face.

"Well, you know very well that this," said Van pointing to Mel, " is in love
to Ryan Decten so my possibility is zero. And Mel is just a best friend to
me and I have much hotter prospects than that!" Then he pointed again to Mel
and made a face as though he's disgusted.

"Aha!" it's Mel's moment, "so I'm not hot huh? Who's your prospect? Does it
sound like a "D"?

"Mel!" Van protest.

"Ooooh!" said the other girls like a single entity, "Ivan has a real
prospect! Who is it?"

"It's no one!" said Van.

"Ohohoho! It's definitely someone!" said Mel teasing Van more.

"Mel! Stop!" said Ivan in a very tense voice with an edge of finality.

Melody, Katrina and Maricar never saw Ivan Anderson loose his cool before so
that totally shut their mouths. Mel never ever wants to anger Van, it's
going to be a every fatal mistake.

"I was only teasing!" said Mel jokingly.

"Yah whatever," said Van curtly, who stood up and walk towards the trash can
leaving the four some alone for a minute. After getting back to the bench,
the four has apologetic faces on.

"Ivan we're sorry if we offended you by being nosy or something. We intended
it only to be a joke," said Melody while Katrina and Maricar nodded in the
background.

"It's ok. I'm sorry too if I lose my cool."

"So," said Maricar, "I think we should keep goin then. The movies are about
to start."

"ok bye," said Van and then Mel as the three girls walked away.

Mel stared at Van. "Sorry I thought you will be able to handle it. I guess I
stepped too far huh?"

Van just smiled and shook his head, "No it's alright. I just got I little
uncomfortable that's all."

"Ok, I'll never do it again. I promise!" said Mel while holding her right
hand in the air. But just then Mel's cell phone started ringing. Mel excused
herself and took the call. After a minute or two, she came back and said
that her mom needed her in the house about an errand thingy. So both of them
decided that it's time to go home.

Van and Mel was just getting pass the book store when Van remembered that he
needed to buy some illustration paper because of a report due on Wednesday.
So Van told Mel to go a head and help her mom as he will just need to dash
to the store. After parting, Van ran to the store and quickly got what he
wanted. Paying in the cashier was only minutes as it was a slow day and not
many people are around. Illustration paid, Van got out of the mall and
waited for a cab but to no luck he decided to get a bus instead.

Get on the bus, Van scan for an empty sit when his brown eyes got lock with
Daniel Lynol's. Both of them smiling stupidly, Daniel motion Van to sit next
to him.

"Well, how lucky can I get!" said Daniel as Van positioned himself beside
the stud.

"Hello to you too," said Van with a grin.

After an awkward silence, Daniel said, "We should stop doing this."

Ivan looked at him in confusion. "Doing what?"

"This," said Daniel, waving his hand between him and Van, "you know,
restricting ourselves. Letting the world dictate our fate. On what to do, on
how to move, on how to live. I just want to know you, to know if what I feel
is true."

Ivan looked at the boy who gave him a reason to live. Daniel's eyes
hypnotized him. It spoke to him and the only thing it said was a single
word, "Love".

"What are you suggesting?" said Van, looking directly into Daniel's eyes.

Daniel broke eye contact as he stared down to his lap as though he's getting
shy. `He is so cute and sexy when he does that!' Van thought, while he's
eyes flicked to Dan's crotch. `Oh god Van, stop. Daniel's having a moment
here!' he said to himself.

Then Dan said, barely a whisper, "I want . . . to have . . . um, well if
you'll agree with me . . . a date. With you." Then he spoke so fast, "Um I
mean, it's only a friendly date. A movie or/and dinner would be nice or
maybe just a chat in a park. It's really up to you."

Ivan stared in surprise. Daniel has his own ways. Ivan thought before
answering, `Wow! Daniel Lynol asking me on a date! Oh my gosh! But what if
someone sees us? Yet he said it's just a "friendly" date to know one
another. Oooh! I think I'm going to faint!'

"That will be nice," said Van, trying all his might not to stand up in that
crowded bus and shout in happiness. Even though he is leashing his ecstasy,
his lips deceived him and showed a very wide grin! That made Daniel grin
too.

"So, you'll come with me on a date?" said Dan.

"Just set the time and place and I'll be there," said Van.

"Next Friday, seven p.m. Let's met up on the near by 7-11 store," said Dan
then added, "Then I'll take you somewhere special."

That made Ivan shiver. "Ok. I'll be there," was all Van had said. By that
instant, the bus stop and Van saw that it was his stop. He stood up and he
was surprised when Daniel also stood up.

"Why are you standing up? This is my stop," said Van.

"Really? This is my stop too," said Dan. They got off the bus and walked a
little bit.

"I never knew you lived so near?" asked Daniel.

"Don't tell me this is your subdivision too?" said Van as he approached the
arch way of his subdivision.

"Wow," escaped Daniel's lips.

Chapter 5: Confession

Van was in his bed, looking up to the ceiling as though it's the most
beautiful painting in the world. His face is tired because of grinning. He's
happy and he can't help it.

Daniel Lynol just asked him for a date. Daniel Lynol. The Daniel Lynol. The
basketball captain, hero of the court, the greek-god look-alike. Van can't
believe his luck.

In the past he needs to be the number one student so that he can be happy,
so that his parents will be satisfied, so that they will call and say that
they were very proud of him. So that he will feel their love. But now, he
doesn't need to have A+ or 100%. He just needs to be himself. Because Daniel
loves him.

Then suddenly, Van's grin vanished and he sat up in his bed. `Does Daniel
love him?' he asked himself. Then a memory of Daniel's voice float in his
mind, "I just want to know you, to know if what I feel is true".

`He is not certain,' said a voice inside Van head, `He is not sure if he
truly loves you or you are just a quick fuck for him. Maybe he was just
curious.'

"No," said Van, his voice hoarse. Then tears suddenly crawled out of his
eyes. He can't explain why he is crying but he suddenly just felt so
vulnerable as though someone's pointing a gun in front of him.

"I love him," said Van. `But does he love you?' the voice countered, `you're
not sure. Don't invest your emotions so much Ivan. You might end up crying
more tears in the future than you are crying now.'

Van put his hands to his face. He doesn't want to believe it but his mind is
true. Daniel hadn't truly said that he loves him, never said, "I love you"
or anything. What if Daniel just realized that he is not gay? That he is
just going to a phase or something?

"Faith," whispered Van, "that's the only thing that I have." Then he stood
up, wiped his face and walked to the computer to do some assignments.

DANIEL:

I can't believe I'm falling in love. Falling in love to a guy! Wow! Even
though I can imagine the reaction of my family once they found out, I don't
care. Once in my life I felt so loved, so important, not because of what I
can do but because of who I am.

Well, love is not really a thing that can be seen in the Lynol Household,
which is why I divert my attentions to other things so that the lack of
affection of my so-called family doesn't put me down. But I often wondered
why the people nearest to you are the ones who are having a hard time
showing their love, while the farthest ones doesn't even have to try.

I know that Ivan Anderson loves me, not just because I heard him say it in
the cafeteria but because of the way he looks at me. His eyes are so honest,
always shows what he feels deep inside even though how good of an actor he
is.

And I love him too. Do I? Or am I just getting pressured because of his
feelings? Just because I know that he loves me, do I have to reciprocate his
love even though I don't really love him?

But, I love him. Last year when I first saw him, he was so beautiful and
gentle and kind. He is so hot! Then when I saw him dance with that girl in
the school play, in a very sexy tango kind of way, I wanted to get in the
stage, kick that girl out of the way and embrace Ivan in my arms.

Why do I love him? I don't know, I just felt it. That strange overwhelming
feeling inside you when you see the "one", the feeling of your heart racing,
your mind going blank and your whole being getting centered at that one
person.

I love him. I love Ivan Anderson. And on our date, I will tell him that.

*	*	*

"You don't look so good," said Mel to Ivan. They are in the cafeteria with
Chris and Jenny having lunch. It is a nice sunny Thursday yet Van's not that
cheery.

"Yah Van, are you sick or something?" said Chris while he chews some of his
salad. By his side, Jenny also looks worried.

"I'm alright guys," said Van, "Just a little tired that's all."

"Tired? Again?" asked Jenny, "You barely do anything Van."

Van's temper rise in. "I'm tired because I think Jenny. Maybe you don't know
how to do that because you're reading the user's manual of your brain upside
down!"

Chris and Mel's jaw dropped. Jenny looked like she swallowed a toad.

"What did you say?" Jenny gasped, "I know that sometimes I'm a bit slow but
I never thought you can insult me like that. I thought you were a friend but
I guess . . . I'm wrong then."

Jenny stood so fast that her lunch dropped to the floor. She walked toward
the exit, tears running down her face, not even bothering to look back.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Chris snarled. He towered over Ivan as he
is now standing. His shout caught the attention of other students. Van
borrowed his face to his hands.

"Shit!" said Van, "I'm so sorry."

"We'll talk later and you better give us an explanation," said Chris now
picking up his bag and started to walk towards the exit. Before he get out,
Van and Mel heard him say, "Dammit!"

That left Van to a very pissed and confused Melissa Rink.

"Well!" said Mel after a few minutes of silence, "Are you going to explain
yourself or not!"

"I'm sorry," Van whispered.

"Well sorry! I'm not the right person to say those things at. What the hell
is the matter with you? Here we are trying to know if something's bothering
you and then you'll shout and insult us?"

"I wasn't thinking-" said Van but Mel cut him off.

"That was clear. Now tell me what is bothering you before I slap you on the
face," said Mel furiously, "Jenny was only trying to lighten up the mood.
You know how sensitive she is. I never expected you to act like this! I
thought I know you!"

"What's that suppose to mean?" said Van, looking hurt.

"I don't know you lately," said Mel, a frown forming in her forehead, "Since
Monday you're so out there, somewhere. Your mind is freaky. You're always
jumpy and curt. And now you shout at Jenny."

By this a single tear got out of Van's eyes. That surprised Mel completely.
She expected Van to retaliate . . . not cry. Then Van picked up his bag and
started to run towards the exit doors.

"Van wait!" cried Mel. `Oh gosh. Don't tell me it's serious. Don't tell me
it's serious,' Mel pray to herself.

Outside the cafeteria, Mel grabs Van by the arm.

"Van, tell me what's wrong?" said Mel, now in a gentle comforting voice.

"I'm so sorry Mel. I can't do it. I just can't," said Van, confusing Melissa
completely.

"Let's go to the benches and then you explain this," then Mel drag Van to
the stone benches near the fountain.

In there Van broke down. He's embarrassed of crying in public but he can't
hold it anymore. He is so scared, confuse and very ashamed. Yet he knows he
need to tell Mel. It is now or never.

Yet Mel thought that the benches are not that very suitable for a very
serious conversation. Mel put a hand on Van's shoulder then said, "I think
we need to relocate."

Managing to control himself, Van asked, "Where can we go?"

Mel gave a little smile and said, "Just come along. I have a plan." Then she
drags Van to the direction of the Guidance Office.

Students aren't allowed to get out of the campus on lunch times because the
school gates are locked by the guards (security measure thingy) but certain
emergencies can give students a pass to get out of school grounds.

"Mel-" said Van but Mel shut him.

"I'm going to do it for just now. Just shut up and let me do my plan `kay?"
said Mel in a reassuring smile.

Arriving to their destination, Mel put a very serious face and approached
the secretary's desk.

"Hello," said Mel in a very worried voice, "My friend here is getting a very
serious migraine, Miss, and he needed his medicine but he forgot them at his
house. He needed to take them or he might pass out."

The secretary bought the act and looked at Van worriedly. Tears still
streaming, Van appeared to be in such a great pain yet Van needed to
restrain himself from smiling because Melissa's stunt is working so
perfectly.

"Okay I'll give him a gate pass so that he can go home," said the secretary.

Van knowing how to react to the situation said in a very pained voice,
"Miss, can you also give my classmate a gate pass. I don't know if I can
make it without her help."

The secretary stared for a minute then said, "Of course I understand." Then
she pulled two slips of paper then wrote a few things then signed it.

"Here, just give it to the guard. He will understand," said the secretary,
her voice full if sympathy.

"Thank you very much," said Mel, still not dropping the act.

When they arrive to the gate, the guard took the gate passes and opened the
gates. They said thank you and they were free.

After walking a little bit, Van managed a smile then said, "I can't believe
we just bluff our way out of campus."

"Well, it was definitely needed so I guess it's acceptable," said Mel, then
halted a cab, "Let's go to the mall and we can talk in one of the
restaurants in there," then she and Van jump inside the taxi.

*	*	*

After getting seated in the far corner of Greenwich, Pearl Shakes at hand,
Mel looked at Van.

"So . . . what is the big problem that transformed you to a curt blabbing
lunatic?" she said in a very mocked voice that made Van snort for one
second. After that, the humor was gone and Van hid again in his hands. Then
he said something but Mel couldn't comprehend it because his hands are
blocking his voice.

"Denilasmetdayt," said Van

"What?" said Mel frowning deeply. Then she pried Van hands, she saw his face
shining in tears yet Mel could get pass the thought that he looks so cute
when crying.

"Daniel asked me to a date," Van whispered, after a minute.

*	*	*

MELISSA:

I was dumbfounded by what I just heard. Daniel Lynol asked my best friend,
Ivan Anderson for a date?

"What?" I asked not really trusting my ears.

Van looked so uncomfortable I would have taken what I said back. But I
needed to confirm it.

"I said," Van said through gritted teeth, " . . . Daniel . . . asked me to a
date."

"Daniel? Daniel Lynol asked you?" I said very slowly as though talking to a
nine year old.

Van looked annoyed and afraid and confuse, I can't really say but his
expression is far from pleasant. "Yeess!" he said curtly.

"OK!" I said before he gets all hot, "How did this happened? What the hell
is going on? Explain fast before I get a heart attack."

Van took a deep breath and looked to the table. Seconds of silence pass
before he spoke again.

"We had sex," was all he said.

I nearly coughed up my breakfast. Not that I'm grossed out or anything but I
was sipping my Pearl Shake when the Surprise Extravaganza drop from the air.
And I was shocked by this news.

"NO!" I hissed at him. Van blushed and hid behind his hands. I open my mouth
to say something but all I managed to do was grin to my best pal. And then a
thought occurred to me.

"When did this happened?" I said demandingly but when he didn't move I said,
"Ivan Anderson I'm talking to you! When? How? Why?"

He still didn't move. I sipped a little bit of shake by my straw, then
sprayed it all over him.

"Hey!" he said angrily.

"Now I get your attention!" I said while handing him some napkins to wipe
his face and hands clean. "Answer the questionssssss! Now!"

After wiping the sticky shake out of his skin, he started to explain. The
truth that he hid from me, and he will have a very very nice surprise after
this story telling.

*	*	*

IVAN:

I sat there, my skin sticky because of my crazy best friend. Mel eyed me
with her probing glare and I submitted to the inquisition.

"It happened last theater work shop," I started but Mel interrupted me.

"I knew something's fishy that day! I smelled it!" said Mel.

I throw a very power evil glare at her and said angrily, "Do you want the
story or not!?"

"Oops! Sorry," said Mel.

Breath deeply then told her the most wonderful memory in my mind.

"As you might remember, we did the Remote Exercise last workshop. At first,
I blindfolded Daniel to show him how to give orders to follow. Then we
exchanged and now, I was the one who's blindfolded," I stop and sip my shake
as my throat is getting dry. Mel looks like a constipated cat because of the
pause. I can't blame her, as this is the story of the century.

"He lead me to the faculty bathroom in the third building far back the
campus grounds. Then . . ." I gulped and said so low I didn't know if Mel
will hear me, "we . . . had . . . sex."

Mel's eyes nearly dropped to the floor, her mouth opened so big she looked
like a Halloween mask. She closed her eyes for ten seconds and then opened
it again. She is looking at me as though I'm an endangered animal or
something.

"You . . . and him . . . did that in a bathroom?" said Mel indignantly,
letting me smell the venom in her voice, "And you waited this long for me to
find out!"

I flinched. Now I'm gonna get it.

*	*	*

MELISSA:

I want to kill him because of this. He had sex with the most gorgeous guy in
the whole campus and he hadn't even told me! Fine I know that it was too
personal but I am Melissa Rink! Best friend, advisor and . . . I'm important
and I have to know these things!

"You can't blame me by not telling you!" said Van.

I arched an eyebrow, "Why not?"

"It is not for me to out Daniel and I think my sexual life should be a
private matter. I will tell you things if I think the time is right."

Fine, I know he has a point and I need to submit to that.

"OK. So this happened," I said looking at him, confused, "You had sex and he
asked you for a date. Why are you crying?!"

Van looked at the far wall.

"I don't know if he loves me," his voice full of pain.

To tell you the truth, I don't have any experience with relationships or
love lives or anything like that, so in this situation, I totally need to
hack my brain for a suitable reply.

"So you're afraid," I said finally, "Van, you know I'm as newby as you in
the ways of love. But I have watched enough soap operas to know that
relationships won't exist without a foundation."

Van decided to look at me and said, "So, what do you think I should do?"

I smiled and said, "You should follow your heart. If you think he loves you,
let him. If not and he is just using you as a sex toy, tell him to be
careful with "Notorious Rink" because even though how handsome he is, I
won't pity him."

My best friend just smiled and reached for my hand. I held his and felt that
my friend is really in love. Then he began to spoke,

"Are you going to tell Chris and Jenny?" Van asked.

"They deserve an explanation but it should be from you. As you said, `you
will tell things if you think the time is right,' right?"

"I'm such a jerk to Jenny, huh?"

"Oh let me think of about it . . . um . . . YAH!"

That silenced our table. For a minute, we just think to ourselves. Then I
glanced to my watch and saw that it is nearly last period at school.

"Are you planning to apologize now or tomorrow?" I asked him.

"Tomorrows my date," Van said, smilingly.

"What? When did he asked you?"

"Last Friday."

"Oh gosh Ivan Anderson, you are truly full of surprises," I said before we
stood up and had gone home.
