Natural High
By
Lord Dracul

Mind racing.
Blood pumping.
A high I can't explain in words except with "what a rush!"
"Here Larry have a hit."

Larry Carpenter was now in a situation that he had prayed he would
never be in. Standing before him is the man of his dreams never mind that
the dream is only an eighteen-year-old dream. Carl Raines, an every -day-
Joe, who wore tight Levi's and tight shirts and loved to race down the
highway in his camero with his long black hair flying behind him in the
wind. Yes, the very answer to Larry's dreams but apparently he loved
something else more than Larry, marijuana did.
Larry and Carl could be seen all over Taylorsville riding in his
black camero the envy of both girls and boys alike. Every thing that
they've experienced together was an enormous turn on for both boys feeding
off one another's love and lust for life. Larry had been there for Carl
when his mother died last September of Cancer. Carl had taken it hard and
couldn't bear to see the Cancer drain his mother like some mythical vampire
that never seemed to get its fill. Like a shinning armor coming out of
some forgotten Arthurian legend was Larry.
They had went to the same school together most of their lives.
Talking about the weather and various class assignments that those
slave-driving teachers demanded by the next morning. It was on one such
occasion that Larry suggested to Carl that they study together. Larry
figured that Carl would never agree to the study date because he always
seemed to have some place to go.
"Sure Lar, your house or mine?" Larry seemed stunned, he couldn't
believe Carl had accepted his invitation.
"Mine, if it's all right, my folks are away for a week."
"Kewl, I'll be there around 4:30p.m. I have to go home and give mom
her medicine." That was in August. Not only did they discover what the
significance of the Triangle Trade was to the colonies but they also
discovered what it meant to truly be in love. From that night of passion a
fire seemed to burn inside both young men. Every second of every day they
could be seen together. Larry's parents and Carl's mother agreed that it
was nice having another son around. Like the coming of the North Wind
their love for one another blossomed.
Larry would even come over to Carl's and help him care for his
mother. Larry learned that Carl's father had left him when he was three
years old. His mother was left with a toddler and no job. When she felt
well she would have the boys come and sit around her and tell them about
how she had managed to take care of Carl and how she was sorry that Carl
had to take care of her now. With tears in her eyes she would cry herself
to sleep and Carl would quietly get up and kiss her on the forehead and
Larry would straighten out her favorite quilt and then leave her to sleep.
Carl would walk away with his head down crying. It is not
something that you get to seeing even on an every day basis, some withering
away like a rose deprived of water and sunlight. Larry would come over to
him and wrap his arms around him and quietly hold him until he stopped
crying. Then they would go to Carl's room to watch some television but
they always seemed to manage to fall asleep in each other's arms. Then in
the middle of September God must have gotten lonely for he called Carl's
mother home.
It had been a typical day, she had felt well enough to sit on the
couch and talk to the boys about their day at school. She had gotten most
of her color back and an hour later she told them that she was tired and
wanted to rest. She lay down on the couch and went to sleep. Carl
suggested to Larry that they go up to his room and play the Nintendo 64
until she woke up. He had gone that evening to the video store and rented
a new basketball game. A couple of minutes later Carl went down stairs to
get some sodas and went to check on his mother and to check on his mother
and shortly came running back upstairs screaming that his mother was dead.
Needless to say that was a day neither would forget. Larry grabbed him and
made him sit down on the bed to calm down. Carl just looked at Larry with
fear in his eyes, "Hold me Lar, just hold me and don't let go." That's
what Larry did, he held onto Carl all through the arrangements and finally
through the funeral and while Carl put away his mother's belongings.
Carl had wanted to start in his mother's bedroom and wanted Larry
to help him sort and box things. For some reason Carl seemed to be drawn
to his mother's nightstand. He opened the top drawer and there on top of
her favorite nightgown was a small envelope with his name on it. The
envelope smelled of his mother's favorite perfume.
"Lar I can't do this, I can't read this." Then handing the letter
to Carl he laid back on the bed. "Carl you don't have to we can put it
away and you can read it when you're ready."
"No, Lar you open it and read it to me."
	"You sure you want too."
	"Yeah."
Larry opened the letter and laid it on the bed so that Carl could
see.

My dearest Carl,

If you are reading this letter then that means that the Cancer won. I just
wanted you to know that I couldn't give you that mansion on the hill that
we had often talked about and dreamed of together. But just know that I
tried Carl. I'm sorry that I won't be able to see you graduate from
highschool or college. I want you to go and to finish Carl. Then I pray
that you go to college. You're smart son, don't let my passing stop you
from accomplishing your dreams.

At times you'll feel lonely but your not. I will be watching you and you
have Larry to help and love you. Larry you take care of my boy. I love
the both of you deeply.

With love always,

Mom

Larry looked at Carl in bewilderment. "She knew."
"Yeah, she must have seen us together. The one thing mom wasn't
was stupid."
After that time even though Larry and Carl grew closer together and
their love flamed brighter than before Larry noticed that Carl physically
was going down hill. Suspecting that he was sick or drugs were involved he
confronted Carl.
"What's wrong with you lately Carl, you haven't been yourself."
"Nothing man, just can't get everything out of my head. That's all
Lar."
"Is it me Carl, have I done something wrong to upset you?"
"No, Lar, you've done everything right and if I didn't have you I
would have been dead a long time ago. It's rough without mom around."
"I know that Carl, I helped you through it even though we never
will truly get over it, so level with me man, what's doing this too you?"
Then Carl reached into his jean pocket and pulled out what looked
like to Carl a simple pack of cigarettes. Then Carl took one out of the
pack and lit it. The smell made Carl sick.
"Man, are you crazy, don't you know your killing yourself with
that?"
"Here Lar, take a hit man." He reached the joint to Larry.
Larry took the joint and then threw it on the ground. He knew it
would piss Carl off but he loved him too much to lose him to a dam joint.
"Dammit Larry! Why did you do that? Do you know how much these
things cost?"
"No I don't, why are you doing this Carl?"
"It helps me to forget, to forget the pain, and besides I love the
high it gives me. Come on Lar it'll make you feel better."
"Sorry Carl, I don't need weed to get high. I have a way of
getting naturally high." Looking lovingly and seductively at Carl.
"Huh, what are you talking about Larry?"
"Yeah I get on a natural high but only when I'm with you. Hell,
all I have to do is think about you. My mind races, my blood starts
pumping and it gives me a buzz you wouldn't believe. I love you Carl and I
thought you loved me too."
Carl looked at Larry and then down at the pack of joints he held in
his hands. His eye caught the sight of the joint crushed out and he
realized that one day that could be him. Looking back up at Larry, he wads
up the entire pack and throws them down in a near by garbage can.
"I do love you that much Lar."
"Don't worry Carl I promised to take care of you and I am. I bet
your mom's smiling now."
"Do you really think she is Lar?"
"Yeah, she understood about being naturally high, that's why she
did those things for you while you were growing up man."
Carl wrapped his arms around Larry and they got back into the car
and drove off together. It has been nearly ten years now, Larry is
twenty-eight and Carl is twenty-nine. From that day he has been drug free
since he rediscovered what it felt like to be ride on a wave natural highs
with Larry.

The End

Readers, I know you have been through some pretty tough stuff and most of
you are going through the same things that Carl has but if you must get
high, make it a natural high, stay drug free. I know its not easy but look
around you, you'll find your not as alone as you thought you were in the
beginning.
