Subject: Chapter 14 of Obsession

Bill's smile disappeared. "I see you've been busy,
Detective. You've wasted enough of my time. If you want to
talk to me again, make sure you bring a search warrant."
Bill started to walk away, but he turned and stared at
Justyn's Mustang GT. "You must love that car. It looks
pretty new itself. It would be a shame if something happened
to it," he said, as he turned and walked towards his door.

"You mean like what happened to Rob's '65 Mustang?" Justyn
asked.

Bill whirled around and got right up in Justyn's face.
Justyn didn't back down an inch.

"I have no idea what you're talking about, Detective," Bill
said loudly.

"I think you do. I think you know a lot about it. You
wouldn't have been at the Regal 16 Cinema two nights ago,
would you?" Justyn asked.

"What if I was? It is illegal for someone who has just moved
to town to see a movie?" Bill asked, getting louder.

"Not at all. I don't guess you still have your half of the
movie ticket, would you?" Justyn asked.

"I must have tossed it," Bill said. "I don't usually keep
any trash I'm through with."

"Does that include boys too?" Justyn asked.

That kind of shook Bill up a little bit, but he regained his
composure quickly. "You know Detective, I couldn't do your
job. It's much too dangerous for me. I would think you could
make enemies very quickly."

"Oh I do. But the kind of enemies I usually wind up making
are the type people I couldn't care less about. You know,
murders, child molesters, those kind of scum of the earth
type people," Justyn answered.

Bill just glared at Justyn, but didn't say anything for a
long time. "You know, for someone with a loud mouth like you
have, I'm surprised that someone hasn't shot you right
between the eyes."

"Oh, quite a few have tried. But they usually end up dead or
in prison for the rest of their lives. Which one do you
think you'll choose, Bill? It's going to be one or the
other, you know," Justyn answered.

"You don't know what you're talking about. You don't have
anything on me," Bill sneered.

"You'd be surprised. I know all about your military career.
I know about Billy Andrews in Charlotte and Matt English in
Detroit. You're going down, Bill. And that's a promise,"
Justyn answered.

"But you don't have any fucking proof, Detective. And unless
this country has been taken over in the last couple of days
and I don't know about it, you have to have more than just
guesses to try someone for a crime! NOW GET OUT OF MY FACE
OR I MIGHT RE-ARRANGE YOURS!!!" Bill yelled, as he turned
around and stormed towards his apartment.

"Catch you later, Bill," Justyn yelled back. "I'll be
watching you from time to time. You just won't know when or
where."

Bill whirled around with a wild look in his eyes. "I'd watch
my back very carefully, Detective. Your job is very
hazardous. You could get shot at any time." He quickly
unlocked his door, went inside, and slammed it shut.

                    *********************

Bill was furious when he entered his apartment. This
Detective had changed everything. He would now have to be
very careful when he watched Brian's house. He would have to
make sure he wasn't being followed before he could do
anything.

He might have to take care of this nosy Detective. He could
spoil all his fun, and there was NO WAY IN HELL he was
leaving before he made Brian pay for his treachery.

Yeah, he might just have to kill this Detective if he could
just find a way to do it where he couldn't be implicated.
He'd have to start to follow him and learn his habits, where
he lived. If he could just break into his apartment, he
could make it look like it was a burglary. Then, there would
not be a way to trace it back to him if he was careful. And
he was always careful.

Bill always made sure to keep the hard drive of his computer
clean. There were no references to any of his young
boyfriends. No pictures. He kept everything on a growing
stack of CD's that he kept in a carefully padded CD case.
Now, even that had to go. Just out of his apartment, not out
of his life.

Bill watched out of his windows as Justyn climbed into his
car and drove away. He knew the Detective would think he was
home for the night. He couldn't watch him all the time. He
had better store the CD's somewhere safe until he decided
what to do about both of them.

Bill left his apartment with the stack of CD's in a paper
bag, locking his apartment behind him. He drove to the back
of the apartment parking lot and went around to the driver's
side. He lay down in the floorboard of his car and carefully
inserted the CD's between the carpet and the floor of the
car behind the console. When he was sure that no one could
see that anything had been tampered with, he drove back to
his original parking space, parked, and went back inside.

He was too keyed up to unpack now. He did sign on the net
and spent the next couple of hours hunting for his next
victim.

                    *******************

"Chief, you have to send someone," Justyn pleaded. "Send
Luke. Mr. English has already said we could search his son's
computer. Luke would be able to find anything hidden there
in a matter of minutes. He wouldn't even need to spend the
night."

"Luke's a research analyst. He isn't a Detective," the Chief
answered. "Plus, I don't have unlimited funds for going on
one of your wild goose chases."

"When I went to Charlotte, that wasn't a wild goose chase
and you know it. Everything about this guys screams that he
has killed at least one kid and probably more. He killed in
the army and now he is still killing after they kicked him
out. You have my report. He traded in a dark green Jeep on
his new Trans Am. The Jeep is just like the one described in
the report from Detroit where the driver shot out both back
tires on Matt English's car. And the same Jeep was observed
here following Brian Brown. What do I need, a signed
confession?" Justyn argued.

"All of it is still circumstantial evidence," the Chief
answered.

"But I am still building all the evidence. Luke is running
the vehicle identification number right now to see if it was
ever registered in Michigan. Chief, I know I'm right. How
much money could it take to send someone up one morning and
come back the same day? This could be a serial killer,"
Justyn almost yelled to his boss.

The Chief was starting to get angry himself. He knew Justyn
was the best he had, but he wasn't used to getting yelled at
by the people under him. He was just about to say something
else when someone knocked on the door. "Come in," he said
instead.

Luke entered carrying a sheet of paper. "Sorry to interrupt,
Chief. Justyn was right. The Jeep was registered in a suburb
of Detroit to the suspect."

Justyn walked around and took the paper out of Luke's hands
and read it, then handed it the Chief. He then put his arm
around Luke's shoulders and said. "Thanks, buddy, I owe you
one. I'd like to pay you back. How would you like an all
expenses paid trip to beautiful Detroit, Michigan? I'll even
pay for lunch myself. All the Whoppers you can eat."

"Oh no," Luke said, as he pulled away from Justyn. "I have
my own work to do here. If you think it is so important, you
go to Detroit."

"I'd love to. The smell from all the car factories is very
appealing. But I am on a stake out here. And we really need
a computer expert. You know that isn't me. You won't even
let me touch your keyboard because you're scared I'll mess
up some of your files," Justyn kidded.

"Chief, talk some sense into him," Luke pleaded. But he saw
a smirk on the face of the Chief and he knew he was soon
headed to the airport.

                      *****************

"How come we can go to school but not anywhere else?" Bri
asked from the passenger seat.

"Because there is no way Bill can get inside the school. All
the entrances are monitored," Mike answered.

"So both of us are expected to just go to school and then
stay at home until he is caught?" Bri fumed.

"I don't like it either. My partners are being
understanding, but it is really hard to take off in the
middle of the day to pick you both up. But this is something
we have to do. We don't have a choice," Mike answered.

"But we know what he drives. There are three of us. We could
all keep an eye out for him. Why can't we go somewhere?
Anywhere! A movie, to the mall, anything. I'm going to go
out of my mind," Bri said.

"It's been two days. Give me a break," Mike answered.

Mike pulled up in front of the school and let them out.
"Have a good day at school," he said.

"Yeah right," Bri said as he pushed back the front seat
after letting Rob out of the back. He slammed the door and
stormed away.

                  ******************

Bill watched safely from a block away as Brian and Rob
walked into the school. There was no way he could get to
them here. He would just have to find a different place. He
watched Mike drive away and decided to see where he worked.

                  ******************

Mike hurried back to work. He was the youngest partner in
his pediatrician practice and didn't like to cause his
partners any concern about his office hours. But he knew
that he didn't have a choice. Brian and Rob's safety came
first.

But he wasn't as careful as he might have been since he was
in a hurry. He never saw the new Trans Am following from
behind.

He got to work and hurried inside. He parked where he always
did, at the rear of the parking lot where he could take up
two parking spaces so that another car couldn't hammer their
doors into the side of his Cobra, but far enough away where
it wouldn't inconvenience any patients. But where he parked
was out of sight from the main building.

Bill had driven past the doctor's office when Mike pulled
in, but quickly turned around and pulled into a spot near
where Mike had parked. He watched for a few minutes, seeing
that most patients didn't park anywhere near Mike's car.
There were plenty of spots lots closer to the front door
that this.

He finally got out of his car and circled the Cobra. He
could see Brian riding in the front seat. Rick's anger came
back up to the surface and he bent down and felt the handle
of his knife that was strapped against his shin.

He had gotten used to having a knife strapped there when he
was in the Rangers and still enjoyed the feeling it gave
him. You never knew when a knife like this might come in
handy.

He took it out of the sheaf attached to his leg and held it
against his thigh, looking around. No one was in sight. He
quickly bent down and plunged the knife into the rear
passenger side tire, imagining how happy it would make him
feel if Brian was the tire. The tire went immediately flat,
but made very little noise.

Mike had parked a little sideways, so the passenger side was
pulled where it was shielded from the office building. There
were very few windows on that side of the building anyway,
but Bill looked around again to make sure he wasn't being
observed, then plunged the knife into the front tire. He
twisted it just like he was dreaming of twisting it into
Brian's chest, or stomach, or both.

He knew that he should leave before he was spotted, but his
adrenaline was pumping. His anger was almost out of control.
He quickly walked to the other side, looked once more, and
plunged the knife into the back tire. He used all his
strength to cut a slit almost a foot long before all the air
ran out of the tire, threatening to jam the knife where he
couldn't retrieve it.

He quickly did the same thing to the front tire, then walked
back to the other side. He looked around again, but there
wasn't anyone watching. His confidence grew.

He had done a lot of damage, but this was nothing compared
to what Brian had put him through. Plus, this was just
Brian's brother's car. But he had to show that little son of
a bitch what was going to happen to him when he finally did
get his hands on him.

So Bill took the point of his knife and wrote "FUCK YOU
BRIAN" down the door and across the back quarter panel. He
walked around the whole car, destroying the yellow paint job
with the sharp point of his knife. His anger was beginning
to come back into control, but not quite. So he walked back
around to the passenger side of the car and kicked sideways,
caving in the door. The burglar alarm went off loudly.

He looked up and saw a woman and little boy coming out of
the front door and walking in his direction. Bill decided
that he had better get out of there while he still could, so
he ran towards his car and got inside. He cranked it up,
reversed, and floored it out of the parking lot.

The woman heard the car alarm go off. Her first priority was
protecting her son. So, when the alarm went off, she walked
as quickly as she could to her car, got her son buckled into
his seat belt, and then got in herself. But she did look up
in time to see Bill drive off hurriedly. She didn't look up
in time to see the tag number, but she did get a good look
at the back of the Trans Am.

She looked all around her and saw the badly damaged Mustang.
Taking out her cell phone, she quickly dialed 911 and
reported the vandalism, giving her name and phone number.
Thinking of her son first, she then drove quickly home.

                         *************

"Detective Jones."

"THIS IS DR. BROWN. HAVE YOU HEARD WHAT THE SON OF A BITCH
DID TO MY CAR?"

"Calm down, Dr. Brown. I don't have any idea what you're
talking about," Justyn answered.

"HE FUCKING TRASHED MY COBRA. ALL 4 TIRES HAVE BEEN
PUNCTURED AND HE TOTALLY RUINED THE PAINT JOB. IS THIS
ENOUGH WHERE WE CAN GET SOME PROTECTION FROM THIS FUCKING
MANIAC NOW?" Mike screamed.

"Where are you, Dr. Brown?" Justyn asked.

"I'm at my Doctor's office," Mike answered, calming down a
little bit.

"I'll be right there," Justyn said and hung up.

                         **************

Mike could hear the Mustang's engine before he finally saw
the black GT come into the parking lot. Justyn could spot
the flashing lights of the police cruiser from a block away,
and he parked right behind it.

As he jumped out of the car, Mike rushed up to him. "DO YOU
SEE WHAT HE DID? THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED IF WE HAD
GOTTEN POLICE PROTECTION WHEN I ASKED FOR IT!! WHAT ARE YOU
GOING TO DO ABOUT IT, DECTECTIVE?"

Justyn looked over at the demolished car, then coolly back
at Mike. "Catch the bastard".
