Chapter III: A Crazed Christmas!

23 December 2001. Around 2:30 PM.

"For the last time, no!" I said, while driving through the heavy
traffic.

"Come on, Hyaaa..." my boyfriend whined from the passenger seat. "Just
a couple more, and I'll have the whole set..."

I reply, while trying to look at him and steer my blue 2001 Nissan
X-Terra at the same time, "Your obsession with pencil boards is unholy! And
a couple more or not, I am not about to spend $300 on them, I don't care if
they have a naked Belldandy on them!"

"But it could be my Christmas and early birthday presents!"

"You spent that on that gigantic autographed poster of Skuld, and you
didn't even take it out of the wrapper!"

     "But--"

     "No!"

Brian crosses his arms and sulks silently. V reaches over from the backseat
and playfully pinches him on the cheek. "Aww, poor lil guy can't get what
he wants??"

He mumbles, "Shut up V, I'm not in the mood."

"Aww, is Titanium Boy upset? How cute!" She slugs him in the arm to
punctuate the last word in her sentence.

"...ite... Titanium Boy is hurt, and now very angry!" He turns and is
about to wage war with the girl, when Alice, who's sitting between V and
Fuu, speaks up.

"If you kill me trying to kill her...I'll kill you."

Fuu shouts as the battle ensues. "STOP THAT DAMN FIGHTING OR I'LL TURN THIS
CAR AROUND, I SWEAR TO GOD!"

This comment causes the others, (minus me because I'm driving) to stop and
look at her weirdly.

"...Oh...right...sorry, I'm used to being the one driving." She says
while shrugging her shoulders.

We all roll our eyes as we make it to the mall in time for the holiday rush
and we split up to do our holiday shopping; V flashes a gold card.

"I have a VISA!!!! STORE OWNERS BEWARE!!!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!"

When she notices we've turned away and pretended to not have known her, and
she sees the other shoppers stare at her, she gets quiet. "WHAT THE HELL
ARE YOU ALL LOOKING AT?!?!?!" The crowd starts to thin out as she heads to
the nearest store.

23 December 2001. Around 7:45 PM.

We meet back up at the car, all of our arms loaded down with gifts, and I
fumble with my keys to open the door. Minutes later, we're headed downtown
to drop off V and Fuu at their place We all gave them hugs and agreed to
meet for a little Christmas get-together before they left. Next stop was
Alice's place. We again promised to get together for Christmas and that
left Brian and me as we drove back to my place. We drove in silence for a
good while until he put his hand over mine, resting on the gearshift. He
looks over at me, speaking softly and soothingly.

	"Hya-chan..."

Lost in my own thoughts, I don't even notice that he's there, until he
speaks again...

	"Hya..."

I quickly snap out of my trance. "Huh? Oh, I'm sorry...yes, sweetie?"

	"Daijoubu? <Are you alright? >"

I grip the steering wheel tightly. "Sure, I'm okay...I mean, why wouldn't I
be?"

"Well, this is going to be your first Christmas...without them."

"I know. It's okay; I'm not that worried about it. I was bound to
be separated from my parents sometime, it's just a little sooner that's
all..." I laugh bitterly. "Not like they care or anything...it's better
that it be this way...for the both of us."

He lovingly squeezes my hand. "Hai...demo, if you ever want to talk..."

I squeeze back. "I know, and if I do, I will."

"As long as you know I'm here for you."

"I know; I'm here for you too."

We pull into my driveway and take all the bags out of the car and head up
the stairs to my apartment. I fish out my keys from my pocket and open the
front door; as soon as I get in, I dump all the bags on the couch. "Ugh, I
have to go to the bathroom..." I rush to the bathroom and close the door,
quietly locking it. Letting out a long, soft sigh, I lean forward on the
sink, gripping it with both hands and stare at my reflection in the
mirror...recalling what it felt like when I first came out to my
parents... That day (it was a Sunday) I recall coming to them while they
were in the living room...

"Mom, dad? We have to talk."

My mother looks up from the morning paper. "What about, dear?"

My father looks away from the weekly football game on TV. "You're not
failing anything, are you?"

"No, no... it's got nothing to do with my grades."

	"Then what?"

"Well, the truth of the matter is," I mentally brace myself. "I'm
gay."

A painfully long period of silence follows; the tension in the room builds
to uncomfortable levels.

My mother decides to take the first crack at it. "Are you sure?"

"Mom, I said I was gay, not that I was thinking of painting the
room bright orange. Yeah, I'm sure!"

My father speaks up. "But you can't be, it's not natural, it's probably
just a phase."

"You mean, like the 5 year long kind of phase? Because, that's how
long I've felt about this."

"Don't you dare speak to me like that!"

I'm getting angry at this point... "And don't you dare speak to me like I
don't know what I'm talking abou--!!" His hand smacking me across the face,
sending my head jerking to the left, cuts off my sentence.

"I'll be damned if I have one of those...those...dirty queers for a
son!"

My voice goes guttural and deep with fury. "Don't worry...even if you
didn't, you'd be going straight to hell anywa--!" Another slap...

"I won't tolerate any talk like that from a little pansy like you!"
I grit my teeth and look away from him.

	"Fuck...YOU...you hateful...hypocritical...small minded...son of a
BITCH!" I scream at him before storming out of the room, grabbing my
leather jacket, throwing open, walking through, and slamming the door.

I sniff softly and slowly wipe the falling tears from my eyes, when Brian
knocks on the door.

"Hya...what's taking so long? You fall in or something?"

I try to straighten my voice so it doesn't look like I've been
crying. "Gomen, I'll be right out..."

24 December 2001. 3:30 PM.

Brian unlocks the front door of the apartment, carrying our mail...our
mail. Our mail, I like the sound of that... He's living with me now, I
asked him to move in...

	"Hya-chan, mail's here...you got a package!"

"Oh?" I take the package from him and read the sender
address...it's from my parents. I promptly walk to the kitchen and dump it
in the trashcan.

"HYA!" Brian says in shock. "You could've at least seen what it
what it was fir--"

"No!" Clenching my fists at my sides. "I don't care if they'd sent
me a million fucking dollars! No `gift' can ever...EVER make up for what
they did to me!" Turning, I walk quickly out of the room, one hand over my
mouth, the other wiping my eyes, I shut myself in out bedroom and lock the
door; seconds later, I find myself curling up on the bed, crying with my
head buried in the pillows. Minutes after that, I hear Brian knocking
softly on the door.

	"Hya... Max... are you okay?"

I mutter back. "If you define something as being okay, like
something that'll need probably several years of extensive therapy to fix,
then oh yeah, I'm goddamn peachy!!!!"

"It'll be okay...I know, you've never told me major details of you
and your parents' past...I know something awful must've happened, and I'm
sorry...it must be horrible to have to deal with those kinds of things, and
I'm sorry you had to; but you forget, I'm here now, I'll always be here for
you..."

The door slowly opens, me standing there with teary eyes, and him looking
like he's about to have some...I launch myself into his arms and bury my
head in his shoulder, crying as he gently rubs my back-
"Shhh...Hya-chan...it's okay...it'll be okay. I promise..."

The next week flew by me in a blur. The two of V, plus Fuu, Alice,
and us got together as promised and we all had fun and laughed and carried
on, despite what had happened the day before. We all exchanged gifts, and
Brian was happy to see I had gotten him the pencil board he'd been so
desperately been whining for almost all year, Alice and V got lots of
clothes from their favorite stores, and V was speechless when she opened
her present from Fuu and found a brand spanking new pink vibrator
inside......ahem... moving on... Before we knew it, New Year's was right
around the corner, and we were setting up my apartment to have a big New
Year's Bash. We had just about everything, my stereo system set up with
some huge speakers, laser lights in the corner, a buffet that could choke a
killer whale, and some killer tunes. Now all we needed was people. We sent
out huge flyers all over the school, inviting everyone in our class to
come, and some other friends as well.
The night of the party, it was bumpin'. Girls and guys, some girls
and girls, even some guys and other guys were paired up and grinding bodies
on the dance floor to hot techno beats. It was about 11:30, and the New
Year wasn't too far ahead. After several other songs, I felt a sudden urge
to be with Brian alone, so, I grabbed his hand gently under the table we
were sitting at, squeezed it gently, and motioned towards the bedroom.
I close the door behind us, looking at him for a moment, as he sits
down on the bed.
"Hya, what is it? Something wrong?"

"No, no, nothing's wrong... it's just, that after so long," I
reply, while sitting next to him, putting my hand on top of his and
caressing it slowly with my thumb. "Things are actually right... I've been
doing a lot of thinking this past couple of weeks, and I know that I
haven't been exactly...the most fun to be around, I...I just wanted to say
thank you, for putting up with it. And I've also been thinking, New Year,
new plan...so..." I get up and start to fish through my drawer, looking for
something. "Where...the hell did I put that thing??" I finally come up with
a small black box and hand it to him; he looks at me quizzically, and I
just urge him softly to open it. Inside is a silver ring, and inscribed on
the inside is just one word: Aishiteru. He looks up at me, his eyes
wide-eyed.

	"This is...!!!!"

"Hai, I know. I know we're only teenagers, and of course this state
has a wee lil thing against same sex marriages...I just want you to know
that I'll be yours forever...if you want me to be, and when the right time
comes, we can have that on paper." I reply, holding my left hand up, with
an identical silver ring on it.

Brian slips the ring on and hugs me tightly. "Of course, you baka!" Still
embracing, we look into each other's eyes as we both lean in and immerse
ourselves in a tender kiss; the party outside gets wild, even muffled by
the walls, we can still hear them.

"... 2...1...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" We can hear the noisemakers and streamers
popping off, and the fireworks exploding high in the city sky as our lips
part. Brian whispers to me.

	"Happy New Year, babe."

I smile, stroking his hair lovingly. "Happy New Year." And we lean in for
another kiss.
