In class, one of the teachers' spoke up and asked me, "So Phill, who are

"It's a secret.  If you see a limo turn up at about four twenty, then it's
for us.  If you are quick, you may see them, if you are slow, you will have
to wait until nine when they come on stage."  This really got people
interested.

"A limo, you say?"

At lunch break, I drove the van up to the hall's side entrance.  We began
unloading our things.  The PA came out first, and we connected it all up.
This always took the longest time because we had to, by law, tape down all
lose cables.  But that was done by the end of lunch.  Then, we all had
lessons at different times.  None of us had anything last lesson Friday, so
we arranged to go through some songs.  But Dan left with Kaz, and Robbie
and I did the Amps and guitar bits.  I made sure to leave a free guitar
spot for Daniel.  Then Kaz and Dan returned and Robbie and I left.  We both
sat there totally ignoring the sly comments that were still coming at us.
When the lesson ended, we ran at top speed to the hall.  This was actually
a large hall.  When we got there, we had four people waiting for us.

song, the hall started to get a few spectators and so we did 'Yellow' by
Coldplay.  By the time we had done all that the clock had ticked around to
four twenty.

As the hand ticked over, we finished the song and a couple of guys wearing
suits walked in and came up on stage.  The mic was still on and everyone
could still hear the conversation.

"You Phill Wallis?"

"Yeah"

"We are here to pick you up on behalf of S.."

"SSSSHHHH" I said and they smiled.

"Lets go."

I unplugged my guitar, Robbie did like wise, and we placed them in the room
we would use before we went on stage.

"Are you guys security?" I asked.

"Yeah"

"Would one of you stay and keep and eye on this?  We have been having some
problems and there are people that would love to see this mucked up."

"Ok, we will both stay, but Mike here will escort you to the car."

"Who are these people?" he asked as a little band followed.

"This is Robbie, Kaz, Dan, Josh and Jace," I said, pointing them out.

"Ok, no more though."

"Ok"

We walked out to a shiny white modern limo.  There was a real crowd of
people looking at us with this guy escorting us.  The door was opened and
we jumped in and it was shut quickly.  As it happened, they left a team of
security to check it all out.

"Hey" it was that soft Aussie accent.

"Hi" we all said.

"So who is Robbie and who is Phill?"

"That's us" I said indicating to Robbie.

"So, is it true?" Daniel asked.

"Erm, what?" Robbie asked.

"You are a gay couple?"

We all laughed. "Sure we are and this is Jace and Josh, them also."

"NO WAY?  Really?"

"Yeah" Jace said.

"Why so interested" I asked.

"Well you know we just wondered if what everyone has said is true" Daniel
said.

"Everyone?"

"Yes, well you know we did party in the park a couple of weeks back."

"Well, we talk to people there and you have a lot of people worried!"

"What, why?" Kaz asked.

"Because they say that you are very good!!" Darren said.

"How would they know?" Robbie asked.

"They send out scouts to try and find out where the competition may be."

"Oh, I see."

"Where to, sir?" the Chauffeur asked and they both looked at us.

"Depends on you.  You want to go somewhere public or somewhere private?"

"Private" Darren said.

"Ok we can go home, is that ok?" I asked.

"Yeah that's cool, give him directions" So Kaz leant over and told him
where to go.

"So, what songs do you want us to do with you?" Daniel asked.

"Affirmation, Crash and Burn, Chained to You, To the Moon and Back, Truly
Madly Deeply and Santa Monica," I said without pausing.

"Ok, I reckon we can do those," Darren said.

"Well, what I wanted to do was do an hour and a half of mixed tunes so YOU
can hear us, and then we would do those songs and take us to just over two
hours," Robbie said.

"You have this well planned.  That's ok with us.  Have you left me space to
plug my guitar in?" Daniel asked.

"Yep!"

We arrived back at the house and the limo pulled in and we got out.

Tim came bounding out the door, clutching his two albums and a pen.  They
both laughed and we all went inside.  To say that mum and Jude were
astounded was an understatement!!

"So mum, will you be coming?"  "Definitely!!"

We all had a drink together and they talked about life on the road.  They
concluded that it was great!  Couple by couple came and went to get changed
and ready.  When they asked for a room to get changed in I showed them up
to our room and left them.

When I got downstairs, there was general hum from chattering voices.  Jude

So mum and Jude came in and locked up the house.  We then all piled into

When we pulled into the school there was a group around the gate but the
limo pulled straight on past obviously used to this.  We all went in
through the side gate very quickly, as we didn't want the game to be given
away.  When there, we met the guy's manager and ushered them into the side
room.

"You will be able to hear everything and see it all, too," I said, pointing
to a video monitor.  I left Mum, Jude and Tim there, plus the two sets of
boys of course!  The room was a bit cramped but it wasn't too bad.  Then
Robbie and I picked up our guitars and then we all walked out onto the
stage.  I was shocked.  I mean, really shocked.  The hall was absolutely
packed.  You couldn't possibly move in it.  The doors were all open and
people spilled out onto the space outside.  The teachers had sectioned a
space off and were all sitting in it...I noticed from the sidelines.

Dan plugged in our guitar cables and took his place.

"WOW, Its good to see you all.  Hello" Kaz said into the mic.

They all shouted back HELLO and then it was really really loud.  I then
noticed that the security had made a barrier in front of the stage.

"CANT HEAR YOU, WE SAID HELLO," Dan shouted.

HELLO they shouted.

"Ok then, here is the first song we are going to play for you," Kaz said.
The stage went black and Dan hit the button.  He had already got the intro
synthesised into the keyboard.  All the 'I want my MTV's also programmed on
the same track.  After a minute, Kaz performed the drum solo and it was
truly class, as the spotlight shone on her.  Then Robbie and I come on with
me doing the solo guitar lead.  Two spot lights on us.  Then Kaz rejoined
and Robbie came in at the same time. Robbie sang this one because it has
such an easy bass part.  Guess what it is yet? We all smiled when he got to
the part that goes "The little faggot with the earring and the makeup, the
little faggot's got his own jet plane, the little faggot's a millionaire."
I put in a little emphasis on the millionaire and got a little scream.  Got

Then we did Coldplay 'Yellow' That always gets a good response.

"Hi everyone.  Welcome.  This is the first of its kind.  This is a
prejudice free concert!"  There were huge shouts from everyone.  There were
little pockets in amongst the crowd where the jocks stood.

"I would like to play a song now that most guys will hate and most girls
and gay guys will love!" This got a good laugh.

"Ladies this is It's Raining MEN!!" Oh boy we got the screams from the
girls.  It's an 80's song but most people know it.

Dan actually liked to play this now because there is so much for him to do,
the intro the bangs everything.  Robbie and I share the singing because it
splits down nicely into two.

I do lead vocals first and then we swap and I do backing vocals.  Even the
female staff went wild on this one.  It was weird because Mr Stringer
really got into it as well.

When we had finished that, we rolled thorough some more, David Gray,
Offspring that the teachers weren't so keen on, Semisonic and several of
our own songs.  After the first stint, we had a drink on stage and then I
went to the mic.

"Now Guys and Girls the moment you have all been waiting for, the starrrr
guestssss.  Please, a huge welcome for SAVAGE GARDEN" The noise was
absolutely deafening.

Darren came up to the mic in between Robbie and me.  Daniel plugged in and
stood next to me.

"Hello, England!" he shouted in that smooth Aussie accent.

The reply was mind numbingly loud.

"We are here today because of this great band.  Phill and Robbie have told
me all about what you did to them.  And like Phill says, this is a
prejudice free zone."

Ok so I wasn't expecting that.

"Today we are going to start with a couple of songs from our older album.
Here is To the Moon and Back!"  This was a real hit over here.  Dan had
once again programmed the beginning in and we let it play through.  Then
Daniel and myself did the beginning lead promptly followed by Kaz and then
Darren.  This was perfect, I have to hand it to Kaz, she was spot on
everytime there was a fill.  Of course Daniel had played this before, but
he was perfect also.  I slipped up once, but it was only a small one.  Of
course Robbie and I didn't do any singing because Darren did it all.  When
Dan finished off with manual work he hit the wrong note once, but it is to
be expected every now and again.

"What did you think?" Another LOUD shout.

"Truly MADLY DEEPLY!" Darren shouted.

It was cool because Robbie and I did the backing vocals for this and there
were quiet a lot of them.  Again all hands to Kaz it was absolutely
stunning.

"Right everyone, this is one that the guys here DON'T know about.  Let's
see if they can do it.  Break Me Shake ME!!"

My heart went out to Robbie because there is such a big bass part in the
beginning of this.  I did the backing vocals on this because the bass was a
lot more complicated.  Then WHAM, all of us went for it, Kaz moving around
that kit, Dan filling in me on lead with Daniel.  And when we got to the
end of that song, I moved over to Robbie and gave him a hug as Darren
explained.

"Everyone, let's have a huge hand for these guys, no crap, they didn't know
about that and they had it almost perfect!"  We had a really loud cheer!

I whispered in Robbie's ear "you were perfect, not a note wrong" and I gave
him a kiss on the cheek

"Ok everyone this is a slow one for you to slow down on.  One two three"
and we went into Santa Monica as one.  We had had problems doing that for a
long time but it came together well.

"Ok people we have three songs left and they are all from the new album.
Lets Crash and BURN!"  Dan again with the beginning and then Daniel looked
at me and I did the lead on my own to start with.  Darren came in right on
cue.  Then all together, one two three.  Bam we clicked like anything.
HUGE hand for Kaz because on the album, the drums are done on a rhythm
machine.  She sounded album perfect.  We finished that with a nice bit of
drumming.  That is the problem with albums, they all have fade out.

"Guys and Gals.  This is a special day and so we are going to sing you
something that hasn't even been released over here yet.  Please, let's have
it for CHAINED TO YOU."

This is my favourite song on the album.  Kaz starts and then once again
everyone in after a nice bit of guitaring by Daniel.  We had arranged
before hand that Daniel would do the first little lead and I would do the
main lead.  I got a bit nervous before it and then it was done before I
could even think.  I love that bit because there is support bass for the
lead so it was Robbie and me again.

"Ok, this is the last song we are going to sing tonight. This is
Affirmation and when you hear the line, sing it with us.  Come on, even you
bigheaded jocks over there.  He said pointing and they went bright red.
Kaz in then Daniel and me, then Robbie.  Dan and finally Darren.  We got to
the end of the line before and a then the whole hall went up with: "I
BELIEVE YOU CAN'T CONTROL OR CHOOSE YOUR SEXUALITY."  Even the jocks.  We
finished the song just like party in the park.  Drum solo, then guitar and
drum at the same time.  "THANK YOU SO MUCH.  GOD BLESS YOU."

Dan and Kaz came forward, and the pairs took up the others hand. Robbie and
me, Dan and Kaz and even Darren and Daniel, and raised the joined hands
above our heads and Daniel stood up to the mic.

"Like Darren said, we know what has been going on since Monday and I want
you to look."  They did, and they were silent.  "Dan and Kaz, everyone!"
They all shouted and went silent again.  "Robbie and Phill. Let's hear it
for them!!" A huge cheer and Robbie squeezed my hand and went bright red.
I stepped forward and looked at the two of them.

"Everyone, let's give it up one last time for SAVAGE GARDEN!!!" Everyone
was shouting.  Dan and Kaz were loving it and so were the other two, but
Robbie and I just put our heads together and kissed.  The wolf whistles
went up and we both went bright red and bowed.  We all walked off stage and
to the side room.

"ENCORE, ENCORE" was the shout.  We looked at each other and then we went
out again.  "One final song only for you good people.  This is a song by
The Police.  I know that the guys can play it and we have been practising
it for them, here you are.  Every Breath YOU Take."

All three of us sung.  Darren, Robbie and me all into the one mic.  It
sounded cool and its so simple we could all play it blind folded.

At the end, Darren spoke up "We are playing live at Quex Park tomorrow, if
you want to hear more of the same, then come along.  We have a huge
surprise for these guys and we would like you to be there for it!"  I
looked at Robbie and he me then I looked at Kaz and Dan and shrugged my
shoulders.  "THANK YOU GOOD NIGHT!"  Darren said and we all retired for
good.

We all hugged and said thanks to the guys.

"Well, you were absolutely superb, all of you. Robbie, I am soo sorry to
have dropped Break Me on you but I needed to find out how good you all
were.  You ALL excelled yourselves.  How do you fancy playing in front of a
crowd of ten thousand?"

Our Jaws dropped and we all stammered that we would love to.

"Sweet" Daniel said.

Darren came up to me and asked if he could speak with me a moment.  So we
left the room.  "Phill here is a list of our songs from the two albums.
Which if any can you not play as a group?" I scanned the list.  "There is
only one Two Beds And A Coffee Machine.  The simple reason for that is
there is hardly anything except Dan music wise"

"Ok.  Lets go back, shall we?"

"Sure.  Can I ask why you ask?"

"Just curiosity because we felt a bit guilty about dropping you all in
Break Me just in case you couldn't play it."

"Right, we have to go now," Darren said.

"Ok then guys, we will see you soon," I said.

"No, WE will have to go" Once again jaws dropped.

"What about our stuff?"

"Don't worry, we have brought our team along they are dismantling it as we
speak.  It will all be moved up for you."

"COOL" Robbie said and we all laughed.

"Does that include us?" Jace and Josh asked

"Sure it does!" Darren said.

"By the way, you guys were stunning," Josh said and Jace nodded.

"Ok, lets roll," Daniel said.  When we got out there was a crowd of people
being held off by security and there was a HUGE stretched limo out waiting
for us.  Darren and Daniel just waved and got in, so we followed suit.
There was loads of space but Robbie and I still sat close together his arm
about my shoulder.

Needless to say, when we were shown to our hotel rooms, we all fell
straight into bed with a warning that the day would begin at eight with
breakfast and we should all be there.

  When we got to our room Robbie and I stripped off and slid into bed.  I
