Subject: The Science of Us-Part21. Before Lunch (Pat)
Mondays are worse than Hell sometimes, and I knew this one
would probably be the worst ever. The guys and I had convinced
Drew to stay at my place and rest for the week, so we were left
to deal with the aftermath of Friday's revelation and my favorite
car was in the shop getting a new windshield and back window and
hopefully a good cleaning. I got in my father's old car and took
a deep breath as I turned the ignition and prepared to pull out
of the garage.
I was up extra early that morning because I had to pick up
Kyle and Nick. We had decided that it would be easier to face the
world together than individually. I pulled up in front of Kyle's
canary yellow house, I didn't think I'd ever get over the color,
and he and Nick were waiting on his porch. I was surprised to see
his little sister and I guess his mother and father there as
well. I sat in the car trying not to smile like an idiot as I
watched Kyle walk over. Seeing him momentarily erased the
thoughts of how horrible my day was going to be. He opened the
passenger door and said, "My parents want to meet you." He
dropped his bag on the seat and smiled at me.
"Now?" I asked.
"Yeah, they just want to get a good look at you, you know,
make sure I'm not dating an ex-con or something." He smiled and
warmed my heart, but the butterflies remained.
"Can't we do this later?"
"All you have to do is get out and go shake their hands.
They know we need to go to school so they won't grill you too
much." I sighed. "Come on, get out so we can get this over with."
I reluctantly turned off the ignition. "Okay." I got out the
car and walked behind Kyle as he led the way up the path to his
porch. He stopped at the bottom of the steps and I stopped next
to him. To my surprise, he grabbed my hand. I wasn't ready for
public affection, but I welcomed it anyway.
He leaned close to my ear and whispered, "Relax. Everyone
knows we're together now. It's okay for you to hold my hand. I'm
here." I squeezed his hand, and he smiled at me again, filling me
with courage. I wasn't sure what had gotten in to him, but I
liked it. He turned to his parents and said, "Mom, Dad, this is
Pat. Pat, this is my Mom and Dad."
His mother walked down the steps and shook my hand. "Nice to
meet you, Pat. I think I've seen your picture in the paper a few
times." She seemed genuine.
His father remained on the porch. "Hello, Pat. I would say
it's nice to meet you, but it's not." Kyle squeezed my hand
tighter. I felt like a deer in headlights. "Wipe that look off
your face Kyle, the two of you are going to hear worse than that
today. I'm being as polite as I can, given the situation." His
wife turned and looked at him. "Forgive me if the idea of my son
having a boyfriend isn't sitting too well right now," he told
her. His father glanced at me. "You must be something special to
have my son willing to be ostracized just to be with you." He
looked over at Kyle. "I really hope he's worth it, what you're
doing to all of us." He shook his head, "I hope he's worth it,"
he said a little softer. His demeanor changed and he glanced at
the street like there was something there. "Well you boys better
be on your way. I don't want you to be late." With that, he
turned and walked back in the house.
"I guess that wasn't too bad," Nick said as he stood and
walked down the steps.
"He just needs time," Kyle's mother answered, as if Nick was
talking to her.
"I know," Nick told her.
I was in a state of shock. My eyes locked with Kyle's
mother's and hers seemed to smile back at me and assure me that
it was okay. I broke our eye contact and looked at his little
sister. She gave me a friendly smile. "I'm his sister, by the
way." I nodded. "Good luck today."
"We'll be okay," Kyle told her as he loosened his grip on my
hand and then pulled away, causing me to look at him. "Let's go,"
he said.
"Okay." His mother and sister said goodbye to us and we
walked to the car.
Nick was already sitting in the back seat. I started the car
and was about to put the car in drive when Kyle touched my hand.
"He's right you know."
"Yeah, we're going to hear a lot worse today."
"No," he paused and then gazed in to my eyes, "you are
something special."
I felt my heart try to leap out of my body. "When did you
realize this?" I asked.
"Last night." We sat there for a few minutes just gazing in
to each other's eyes.
"If you guys kiss, I'm going to puke!" Nick joked from the
back seat. I had forgotten he was there. Its funny how sometimes
Kyle made other people disappear. We both turned and looked at
Nick. He had a shit eating grin on his face. "What?" he asked,
feigning innocence. I grabbed Kyle's head and pulled his face
close to mine. I kissed him on his cheek, never taking my eyes
off of Nick. "Eww!" Nick teased. I winked at him and released
Kyle.
I was on a high from Kyle's comment so I turned around in my
seat and just kind of sat there for a few seconds. "We can go,
now." Kyle told me.
I took off down the street and we spent the car ride in
silence, although I knew we were all having the same thoughts,
fears about what was waiting for us at school. We pulled in to
the parking lot and I saw some members from the hockey team
walking over as soon as we parked. I glanced at Kyle and he
looked as scared as I felt, gone was the confident boyfriend who
had stood at my side in front of his parents. None of us moved to
get out the car.
One of the guys from the hockey team tapped on my window and
I rolled it down. "What's up, Pat?"
"Not much," I responded, a little hesitant.
"Look man, we heard about what happened Friday. That shit is
fucked up. We just wanted you to know," then the guy looked over
at Kyle, "and you too, Kyle, that the hockey team has your back.
You were always straight up with us about who you are and you're
a helluva hockey player, that's all we need to know."
"Thanks," I told him, "You don't know how good it is to hear
that."
"Well just keep doing what you've been doing, and don't
start making out with your boyfriend in the showers." He laughed,
but I turned bright red, thinking about that night when I had
made out with Kyle in the showers. He stopped laughing and said,
"Why are you guys blushing? I'm just joking. Don't go getting all
girly on me now."
"They're not blushing because they're modest," Nick chimed
in from the back seat, almost splitting his side with laughter,
no doubt remembering that night and the coach walking in on me
and Kyle.
The guy turned his attention to Nick. "What about you Nick,
you finally coming out the closet?"
Nick's laughter died immediately. "I'm not gay!" he
protested.
"Sure you're not," the guy said. He put his hand on my
shoulder, "See you at practice Captain."
"Okay. Thanks again."
"For what? You're the same person today that you were last
week, only now I get to tease you about your boyfriend." He
looked over at Kyle, "Bye Pat's boyfriend," he said with a cheesy
smile and a Miss America wave. I glanced over at Kyle to see his
reaction and he looked embarrassed. The guy turned and walked
away and the other guys who were standing there waved and walked
behind him.
We were getting out the car when Nick said, "I need to get
some new friends. You guys are ruining my reputation." Kyle
laughed so I took it as my cue to laugh as well. I still hadn't
picked up on Nick's sense of humor.
"Face it Nick, you love gay guys," Kyle told him as we
started walking towards the building.
"Whatever you say Pat's boyfriend." Nick teased as he ran
towards the building with Kyle hot on his trail.
I watched Kyle tackle Nick in to the bushes next to
building. They let go of their bags and wrestled in the grass.
They were both laughing and seemingly having a good time. For a
second I thought maybe the day wouldn't be that bad. That thought
quickly faded when I heard someone yell, "Go home Faggots!" Nick
and Kyle jumped apart like they had been hit by lightening. They
jumped to their feet. We all turned to look in the direction that
the comment had come from and I was surprised to see Matt
standing there.
"What the fuck is your problem?" Nick shouted at him.
"You! You said you weren't gay, but here you are, rolling in
the grass with the new school fag." Matt gave Kyle a look of
disgust.
"What are you trying to say?" Kyle asked him.
"I thought I just said it! I guess your ears are too full of
cum to hear!" Matt laughed at his own comment and a few students
who had gathered around to see what was going to happen laughed
with him. "I should have known you and Nick were getting it on.
He's too gay for words."
Nick made a move to charge at Matt, but Kyle grabbed him. We
all knew Nick was no match for Matt. I was standing next to Kyle
at that point, and I watched as his face, and personality seemed
to change. He had told me that he became a different person when
he defended Nick, but I had never seen him in action before. He
walked over to Matt and grabbed him by his collar. He spoke so
loudly that his voice seemed to echo, "Why don't you tell all
these people how you sucked me off last year? How you begged me
to cum on your face, or, how I fucked you at the park over the
summer and you asked me to cum in your mouth, and then you
swallowed every drop! Nick isn't gay, but you sure as hell are!
You goddamn cocksucker! You're as gay as I am!"
"Stop lying, you faggot!" Matt screamed at him as he pushed
him away.
"What do I have to lie about? The whole school knows I'm gay
now. Why don't you come out the closet with me? The grass really
is greener on the other side," Kyle sneered.
"Shut up!" Matt yelled as he pushed him again.
"Truth hurts."
"Faggot!"
"Takes one to know one!" Kyle retorted.
The warning bell sounded. "You're sick!" Matt told him as he
pushed past him and walked towards the building. "Nobody believes
you anyway, you stupid fag!"
The crowd started to clear out. Kyle's face was red with
rage. I walked towards him, but Nick grabbed my arm. "Give him a
second to calm down."
"Okay." I told him as I tried to bite down on my own anger.
I thought Kyle was a virgin and I would be his first. Shoot, I
thought I was going to be his first everything, but I couldn't do
that if he had already been with Matt. He had lied to me.
"What's wrong with you?" Nick asked.
"Huh?"
"You don't look too good. Are you okay?"
"I thought I was his first," I blurted out.
"You were, I mean are," he told me.
"But"
"He was just fucking with Matt. He never did anything with
him."
"How do you know?"
"Well first of all, Kyle would have told me, and secondly,
Matt is the biggest homophobe I know."
"Why would Kyle say those things then?"
"He likes to aim for the jugular and that's not always
physical. Kyle just wanted to embarrass Matt and make him go
away."
"You sure?"
"Positive, so calm down because you've got a long day ahead
of you."
"Yeah, we all do," Kyle said stepping next to me.
"Are you okay?" I asked him.
"I'm fine, but I don't think Matt wants to be my friend
anymore." He laughed and Nick laughed with him. I couldn't
believe that they still had a sense of humor at a time like this.
"We're going to be late," Nick announced as we walked
through the door and saw the virtually empty hallway.
"Great, another reason for people to stare at me," I said.
They laughed and I wondered if they realized I was serious.
"See you at lunch," Kyle whispered as he grabbed my hand for
a second and let it go. We parted ways and went to our lockers
and classes.
I was in the back of the science classroom exchanging notes
with John, when the door opened and Drew hobbled in. He handed
the teacher a note and then walked to his seat and let out a low
gasp as he sat down.
I turned to him and whispered, "What the hell are you doing
here?"
