THE CLOSER I GET
By SICKBADPUPPY
FEB 2003

"Did David tell you the news?", asked Kirsten.

"What news?", I replied.

"He didn't tell you?"

"He didn't"

"So you don't know yet?"

"Know what?"

"Kelly broke up with David last night!", she said excitedly.

"What?", I replied disbelieving. "We had all three classes together this
morning and he didn't tell me a thing. He seems quiet, and, I had a bad
breakfast with my parents this morning. I guess we're in not in the mood
to talk. We just sulked together".

I think I know why David didn't tell me. He hates my "I-told-you-sos". He
knows that I don't approve of his girlfriends, all of them. Don't ask me
why. I just don't.

"That Kelly bitch dumped the cutest, coolest guy in our school. I can't
believe He didn't tell you yet! You're his best friend and he should've
told you first. I heard the news from Amy Plimpton, from my English class.
Amy is a fucking walking rumor closet. I wonder where that bitch gets all
the juiciest news in this fucking boring school!"

I sighed. Heavily. For an extremely beautiful girl like Kristen, her
mouth is a garbage can. Maybe she drinks water from the sewer. Yuck.
Anyways, Kirsten has a major crush on David for years. She flirts with him
constantly. And I mean constantly! Those seductive long stares, those
pouting lips, those hair flicking thing, and just about anything that would
get his attention. It makes me sick sometimes

But this time, I had to tease her.

"Maybe this is your chance", I said, waiting for her reaction.

"You think so?" she replied with a slight touch of hope in her voice.

"Go for it!" I joked.

"Well...." She said dreamily.

"Ok. I will!" she shouted. Oh, boy! I couldn't believe she bought that
joke!

"And I need your help!" Now I need to kick myself.

"No way!"

"Oh yes, you will! Look, you still owe me that $175 from last year. I
might add some fucking interest, if you don't help me!"

I was crushed. I'm broke. Really, really broke. I spend money on the
newest music and game discs. Kirsten, with her rich parents, has no money
problems. I always tagged along when she goes shopping and stuff. And as
the loyal and ass-kissing friend that I am, she says she'll let me borrow
some money from her. Then my IOU's piled up. I was at her mercy. I guess
I have to help her.

"Ok", I sighed, obviously defeated. "What do you want me to do?" I
replied, looking down.

"Set me up on a date, what else, you silly fool!" she shouted.

"Why don't you do that yourself!", I matched her voice.

"Me? Ask David out? Are you kidding?"

"Why not?"

"He might think I have a thing for him!", she shouted again.

"But you have!", I shouted louder.

Anybody in the cafeteria who saw us might think we're quarreling. She
shushed me.

"You don't have to yell", she whispered.

"You started it", I whispered back.

We stared at each other, then after a while we giggled. Then after a few
seconds, we were laughing like crazy. This caused some high school
students in the cafeteria to look our way, now convinced that we truly are
lunatics.

"Don't look behind you. Your stalker is walking our way", she said without
moving her lips.

"Hi, Kristen! Hi, Marc! Mind if I joined you two?".

"Not at all, Sheryl", replied Kristen.

"Oops, have to go. See you guys later", I said, excusing myself.

"But you haven't finished your lunch yet!", whined Sheryl.

"Have to go to my car, I forgot something", I lied.

"See you after class", said Sheryl with puppy eyes.

"Yeah, see you after class", my friend Kristen said, teasing me.

That was lunch. And what a lunch that was! David dumped by her
girlfriend, Kristen asking me to set up a date with him, Sheryl hunting me.
What did Sheryl see in me anyway? When I look in the mirror, all I can see
is a boy of medium height (5'8"); with a short wavy brown hair; and
ordinary eyes (brown). I guess my skin was touched by the good-skin fairy
for I have clear smooth skin. My teeth are white and even. Ordinary nose.
Well, that's me. Very ordinary. Unlike David. David is tall (6'2"), with
straight, black hair (I envy his hair! I always look like a drowned
mouse!), and green eyes. His black hair brings out the green of his eyes,
and his green eyes bring out the blackest hair I've seen on a boy's head.
What people really admire about David is his smile, so I've heard. They
say that he smiles like a little naughty boy.

Believe me, he is truly naughty. I believe he's the world's biggest flirt.
He can hush a girl (or a boy sometimes) with a sensual stare or a
mischievous smile. Girls fall for that (boys too, gay boys, I mean). He
is never without a girlfriend since the 7th or 8th grade. And I always
hate his so-called girlfriends. I don't know why, but then I always try to
be nice to them. I've known him all my life. We live on the same street,
our houses next to each other. Our rooms are directly in front of one
another. We sometimes talk over the windows of our rooms. We have the
same taste in music, movies, books and sports. We love basketball. We
always double-date (he seems to find a date for me). Our families are very
close. We call each other's parents Mom and Dad. Overall, David is my
best friend. We are both popular at school because of basketball (plus his
good looks).

Speaking of good looks, Kirsten is a work of art. Long blond hair,
porcelain skin, the bluest eyes, the reddest lips, the perfect nose, and
tall! She's around 5'10". Boys, as soon as they can have a hard-on, are
after her. I met her during our freshmen year. She's intelligent and
witty and funny. She also thinks I'm intelligent and witty and funny. We
hit it off that first day in high school. She said it's nice to talk a boy
who looks straight in her eyes, not at her breast, when talking. She's
always surrounded by jocks, even going out with some of them. But her
dream guy is David ever since she laid her eyes upon him. David finds her
pretty, but not her type, he once said to me. He never really likes
Kirsten, but since she's my friend, he tries to be nice to her. David even
has a nickname for her: the Big Scary Blond.

Now I have to set them up. But how?

After class, I walked quietly to the lockers, avoiding both Kirsten and
Sheryl. I tried to blend with the crowd. I don't have the energy to face
these two girls. I left a note at Kirsten's locker promising I'll call her
tonight. I went to the parking lot and when I got to my car without the
two girls in sight, I felt relieved. I looked around the parking lot and I
was so happy to see the girls' cars were nowhere in sight. Maybe they
already left, I hope. I haven't seen David's car either. Maybe he's
hiding too. Come to think of it, I haven't seen him since lunchtime!

All I wanted to do was to get home, take a hot shower, and stuff myself
with a bag of potato chips and a liter of Pepsi. Some guys from the
basketball team are going to the mall tonight to watch a movie or
something. I told them to have a good time and asked them to call me
tonight if they have plans for tomorrow (a Saturday). I don't feel like
going out tonight.

When I reached home, I took a very hot and long shower, got dressed in my
oldest shorts and t-shirt and raided the kitchen for that Pepsi and potato
chips.

Watching MTV in my bed, I heard my bedroom window being opened. It's
David. Since our bedrooms are on the first floor, we never bothered using
the front door. It's been that way since we were kids.

"Hi!", he said, smiling that famous electrifying smile of his.

"Hi yourself!", I said irritably.

"You're in a bad mood", he said, still smiling.

I continued to watch TV. He walked to my bed and plopped himself gently to
my bed. I can see that he's also fresh from the shower because I can smell
his favorite shampoo and soap and a hint of mild deodorant. His hair looks
shiny! Like I said earlier, next to him I look like a drowned rat with my
brown wavy hair.

"What's wrong, bud? You mad at me or something?" David asked, obviously
concerned.

"Nothing's wrong, bud. I just learned that Kelly broke up with you. I
learned from Kirsten, who heard from Amy Plimpton".

"Oh..." David said. He moved his eyes from me to the TV.

"Well?", I said looking at him.

"Well?". I asked again but a little louder this time.

"You know the reason", he replied.

"No, I don't".

"Yes, you do".

"No, I don't".

"I hate you saying 'I told you so!'", he replied angrily.

Bingo! I won!

"But it's not what you think", he said

"Really?", I said, not believing him for a second.

"Kelly didn't break up with me. I broke up with her".

"But why? She has great tits, very nice ass, a wonderful package, really",
I asked him.

"Once again, you were right. She's kinda boring. But we had two wonderful
months together. The sex was great!".

Oh, I forgot to tell you something about David. The guy is also a sexist
pig.

"She bored me to death with all her non-sense 'fashion' talks. She yaks
and yaks about hair, nail, clothes, make-up, etc., etc.".

I just looked at him.

"But you're right. She really has a nice pair of knockers and ass!", David
said with twinkle in his eyes and in that sexy voice of his.

I laughed and threw my largest pillow at him.

"Really, she bored me. Would you believe that we never had a single
intelligent conversation in the two months we're together? I think I'm a
dumb-girl magnet!", he said, shaking his head.

Then he continued, "I didn't tell you because whenever bad things happen to
me, you always rub it in! You seem to be happy when I'm down!"

"No, I'm not!"

"Yes, you are! And when something bad happens to you, you can always count
on me to rub it in! It's been that ways since we're kids. I think it's
our own way of being there for each other. It's kinda twisted, you know?"

I have to agree. "I guess you're right".

"Anyway, enough of this talk, okay? I broke up with Kelly because she
bored me. Let's leave it at that", David said.

Then an idea formed inside my brain.

"I know a perfect girl for you", I said.

"Really", he asked.

"And the funny thing is you know her", I replied.

"Who's this girl?"

I just smiled.

"Who is this girl?" David asked curiously.

"Kirsten".

"Kirsten Spencer? Your friend Kirsten? That Kirsten? The Big Scary
Blond?" David asked with his voice getting an octave higher.

"Yes".

"I don't know. I think you're crazy".

"She's smart, she's intelligent, she's funny sometimes, she's witty, and
she's very pretty!", I told him.

David seems to be in deep thought.

"Well?", I asked.

"No".

"Please!", I plead.

"Pretty please!", I'm going down on my knees if I have to.

Then David frowned and said, "Something's not right. I know you. She
planned this, didn't she?"

I gave up.

"Do you have $175?", I asked

"Hell, no!"

"I owe her $175 and she's collecting if I don't set a date for you two".

David paused for a moment, thinking hard.

"Ok", he said, "I'm doing this just for you. Not for her. Just for you.
And I want to tell you this early. I am not going to enjoy it".

He then look me straight in the eyes, his face very serious.

And for the first time, I noticed how really good-looking David is.

I mean really good-looking!

I returned his gaze. I can smell his warm breath because his face is
inching closer to mine. His breath is minty.

I held my breath. Suddenly I felt hot. And red-faced! I just froze.

And then he smiled and said, "You owe me big time, Marc Stevenson!"

"Have to go! Call you later. I promised my Mom I'll clean my room".

He then went to my window, but before stepping out, he turned and gave me
his beautiful smile and asked, "Want to shoot some hoops tomorrow? Or
terrorize old people at the mall?". Obviously, he's in good spirits now.

"Sounds like fun", I replied.

"Ok, bye!", David said.

"Bye!"

Now I am confused. What is happening to me? Do I find David attractive?

I'm afraid the answer is yes.

That's it, the first part. Tell me what you think. I know, there is no
