THE CLOSER I GET CHAPTER 3
BY: SICK BAD PUPPY SEPTEMBER 2003

I was awakened by a warm breath on my nape. Plus, I couldn't move. We
were spooned and he was hugging me. I swear his morning woodie was poking
my butt. Thank God I don't sleep naked. I was beginning to panic and
suddenly I needed to pee. I struggled to get out of his embrace and he
responded by rubbing his erection on my back. To my surprise, I elbowed
him in the ribs.

"Oww!", David said.

"Sorry. Gotta pee." I said softly.

I went to the bathroom and did my morning ritual. When I came back, David
was still sleeping. I did not dare go back to bed, instead, I sat in my
armchair and watched him. He sleeps like a little boy, and he snores
lightly. I couldn't take my eyes off him. I must have watched him for a
few minutes when he moved, facing me. I quickly looked away.

"Morning," David said.

"Go brush your teeth, I could smell your werewolf breath from here."

He stood up, grabbed a pillow and threw it at me. My reflexes were slow
that morning. It hit me in the face.

"Asshole!" I shouted.

He just smiled and went to the bathroom.

I made my bed, which is still warm. I could detect David's scent from the
sheets, pillow, and blanket. I didn't notice that I was hugging a pillow
when David yelled from the bathroom.

"Hey, what time is it?"

I was back to reality in an instant.

"It's 9:10," I finished making up the bed.

He stepped out of my bathroom looking fresh.

"C'mon," I said, "let's have breakfast."

He followed me down to the kitchen. David knew his way around here so I
didn't even bother to ask him what he wanted for breakfast. I ate cereals
and he ate like six waffles, 2 eggs, 6 strips of bacon, and drank
half-a-carton of OJ. The breakfast of champions. I was just smiling when
he finished.

"What?' he asked.

"Nothing. You just ate beakfast for a family of four."

"I'm a growing boy!" he said defensively.

"Yes, you are," I said, rolling my eyes.

We fixed the table and went to my room again.

He went srtraight to my computer and checked his mail. He loves my
computer because I have cable. I laid on my bed, just stared at the
ceiling, still sleepy I guess. He turned my computer off after checking
his mail.

"Mall or basketball?" David asked.

"Mall, definitely".

"My car or your car?"

"My car." I teased him.

"Jeez, there's no leg room in that old, ugly car of yours!"

"Then why the fuck ask me!"

"Because I'm polite."

"You can flush that `polite' attitude down the toilet."

"Hey, you always make me look bad!"

"Because you are!"

"No, I'm not!"

"Yes, you are. You always go breaking some poor girl's heart."

"I'm not the one to blame all the time, you know."

"I know. It's not your fault that you are a dumb-girl magnet."

His face was red in seconds. I should stop now, I know. But how could I
resist? I always enjoy tormenting him!

"And you only want one thing from those poor, helpless girls." I continued.

"You're right. I want them to like me because I'm me. I'm not perfect. I
have lots of flaws but they don't see them. It's flattering at first, but
then it becomes quite boring. I want them to accept me just the way I am,
open-arms." David said seriously.

"You mean open-legs?" I asked innocently.

"God! It's not always about sex, Marc!"

He's really angry now. He's frowning, lips a straight line.

"I'm sorry. I'm just joking. Sorry."

He sighed deeply and smiled a little.

"Just don't rub it in, ok? I'm like the biggest jerk right now. I feel
bad breaking up with her. She's a nice girl but we don't belong together."

"Ok, ok. Sorry again."

He punched me lightly on my right arm.

"Ouch!" I said, acting like it hurt.

"You're such a baby!"

"I'll be a good boy, Daddy, promise! I'll be a very good boy that Santa's
gonna give me a bicycle, PS2, Gameboy Advance and a baby sister!"

"You always crack me up, Marcus James Anderson!" David said while laughing
hard and shaking his head.

"You're a funny guy too, David Anthony Phillips!"

"I'll pick you up at 3."

"Ok, later!"

The he left. Jesus, sometimes he's so sensitive! I was just teasing him.
Seriously, I hope he finds someone that's perfect for him. Could it be
Kirsten? Maybe they'll like each other after I hook them up.

**********************************************************************************

We met some of our friends at the mall. We goofed around. It was fun!
Older people were obviously annoyed watching the future leaders of America
behaving badly. After terrorizing some mall folks, we stuffed our tummies
with hamburgers, fries and cokes. It was past 7pm when we decided to go
home. Jerry, one of the rich kids at school, whose parents were in Las
Vegas for the weekend, is throwing a small party at his house, meaning, all
the popular people in our school (jocks, cheerleaders, rich, you get the
picture) will be there. I have the DVD of the first season of CSI. I have
no plans to go but Kirsten will be there. Hmm.

"But I thought you don't wanna go to Jerry's party?" David asked, eyes on
the road. He hated parties thrown by Jerry.

"I changed my mind."

Silence.

"Oh, I get it. Kirsten's gonna be there, isn't she?"

"Of course! A party is not a party if the great Kirsten is not there."

David gave up and said, "I guess I could stay for an hour, that's it. You
could stay longer if you want." His tone was icy.

"David, all I ask of you is one date. Who knows, you might like her!"

We spent the last 15 minutes in uncomfortable silence.

"Let's meet at my house at 9:45." David said after dropping me off.

"I think we better go there in separate cars." I said.

"Why?"

"Trust me. I have this feeling that I'll be the third wheel tonight." I
said, winking.

"Whatever you want."

"Ok then, see you later. Oh, David, thanks again, for everything, I mean,
I forced you into this, but--"

He smiled a little, but still, the dimples were showing, "I know, I know,
stop apologizing. I think I can stand Kirsten for an hour."

***********************************************************************

I planned to arrivie late to give Kirsten some time alone with David. The
party was in full swing when I reached Jerry's house. As I entered,
somebody forced a can of Bud Light in my hands. I pulled the tab, sipped a
little, then scanned the room for my friends. I couldn't see a familiar
face. In fact, all I could see were heads. Jeez, the place was
over-flowing! The speakers were in full blast. I wonder what time the
police would come tearing at the door. I began to have a headache when
suddenly I felt a hand on my left shoulder. Sheryl.

"You made it!" she shouted. In her hand, a beer.

"What?" I asked, covering my left ear.

"I said, you made it!" she shouted louder.

"I won't stay long. Have you seen any of the guys?" I shouted back. "And
who are these people?"

"I don't know! But my cousin Jerry said that some of them are his college
friends, or whatever. Fraternity and Sorority kids. Cool!" She said,
screaming. I guess she's drunk. She's vulnerable here, with all those
horny college boys.

I held her hand and led her to the back of the house, fewer people here. I
grabbed her beer and tossed it away.

"How many beers did you have?" I asked.

"Four. No, five. Wait! Four! That's it! I had four beers!" She said,
laughing. "Or was it five? Oh, I don't know! Who cares?!"

"Ok, ok," I said, "no more beer for you."

"Didn't like it anyway. Tastes funny. Why do people like that stuff?
It's bitter and, and.... it tastes funny! Yuck!" She rolled her eyes then
laughed.

"I'm going to take you home. Have you seen David or Kirsten?"

"She's playing octopus."

"Playing octopus?" I asked.

"Yes, yes, yes. She's playing octopus. With David. She's all over him.
And he looks scared and helpless." Giggles.

Kirsten's working fast.

"Stay here, don't move." I said. "I'm going inside and find David." I
made her sit on one of the plastic chairs.

But instead of David, I bumped into Kirsten in the kitchen. She was
annoyed to see me.

"Have you seen David?" I asked her.

"He's looking for you. Now go and hide!" She pushed me hard towards the
back of the house.

"I gotta talk to David. I need his help with Sheryl. She's drunk."

"Where's the stupid bitch?" she asked irritably.

I led her to the back porch. We found Sheryl sleeping. And snoring like
hell.

"Take her home. Her parents are in Las Vegas too, so no problem. She'll
be safe." she said.

"I gotta find David so he could help me carry her to my car."

"Why him? We're having a great time. Ask somebody else!"

I wanted to strangle her at that very moment. I was about to shout at her
when we heard footsteps. We turned our heads..

"I'll help you." said the stranger.

"Thanks." said Kirsten then stormed back into the house.

"My name's Alex. I'm a friend of Jerry's. I know Sheryl. You probably
don't know me because I go to Regis Private. I was his best friend there
before he was kicked out."

"I'm Marcus, but please, call me Marc."

"Ok, Marc, let's take Sheryl home. I know where she lives. This party's
too loud I'm starting to have a migraine."

"My head is throbbing, too." I said.

"Let's take the left side of the house. There's a path." Alex said.

We carried and deposited her in the back of my car.

"You want coffee?" Alex asked.

I said yes. I drove to the nearest gas station. He bought two steaming
cups of coffee and handed one to me.

"Where am I?" asked Sheryl from behind, still a little groggy.

"You're in my car. You were drunk and you danced half-naked in front of
the guys. For your fnale, you threw your bra to your admirers. It landed
on Alex's head so he's your master for three consecutive nights. Alex,
she's all yours."

Sheryl nervously put her hands on her blouse and felt for her bra.

"Oh my God, Oh my God! Did I really took my top off? Oh my God, guys saw
my boobs! I'm such a slut! They took pictures? Maybe they'll email my
dad and ask for money! That's blackmail! My dad will hate me and he'll
ground me and I can't ask for a new car and now, and now--I'm a sex slave!"

She started to cry. Me and Alex were laughing so hard that I found it hard
to respond.

"Relax. We're just joking. You fell asleep, that's all, so we decided to
take you home. Don't worry, nobody saw us carrying to the car. You're
safe. They'll think you're cool." I winked at Sheryl. Alex handed her a
napkin and she wiped her tears and blew her nose.

"That's it, no more drinking! I'll stick to coke or sprite. I'm not
touching beer, ever. Well, let's see. I'll try beer again in
college......"

On and on Sheryl went. Alex and I were trying hard not to laugh at
Sheryl's monologue.

"Are you sure you're gonna be fine?" I asked her after dropping her at her
house.

"Yes, I'm fine now. Thanks again. This is our little secret, right guys?"

"Of course!" we said.

"Thanks again." She gave me a kiss on the cheek. She gave Alex a kiss
too.

I drove back to Jerry's house because Alex's car was still there. We
talked about nothing in particular, just small talk. Alex is a nice guy,
and good company. He has this straight, medium-length blonde hair and deep
brown eyes. A real heartbreaker. And tall too, well, taller than me. I
guess he's around six feet tall. He's on the swim team, that explains his
built. He has this soothing voice, deep and warm.

We arrived at Jerry's. He said thanks. I said I should be the one
thanking him. This was the first time I looked into his eyes and I was
shocked. I just realized how attractive this guy was. What he did next
surprised us both. He kissed me on the lips!

"I wanted to do that the first time I saw you tonight." Alex said
breathlessly.

Then he was out of the car, into the shadows. I was frozen, my hands
clammy on the steering wheel. "What the hell happenned?"

I looked at Jerry's front door and saw a surprised David staring at me,
eyes wide and mouth open. Then a figure appeared at his side. Kirsten.
She wrapped her right arm arond his waist. He pulled her in front of him.
He leaned down and kissed her, his eyes are on me, unblinking. He broke
the kiss. She steered him back inside the house. David didn't look back.

I couldn't think straight, a million thoughts racing through my shocked
brain.

David found a new girlfriend.

He saw me kissing another guy.

He will hate me.

Maybe I lost my best friend.

Suddenly, I feel confused, lonely, and miserable. I started the engine and
drove home quietly.
