The Mirror and Nothing More
Chapter 12
The End
Hey all, it's Alex here. I want to thank everyone for hanging with the
story of my life so far. I think the author deserves a big round of
applause. I won't say he's done the best job of presenting the facts, but
he's done a pretty damn good job. Don't you think? Sorry if this one is
pretty short, but I had to type up the outline pretty fast and send it over
to Chuck B.

Author's Note:
Sadly, I am making this the end of the line for this story. I'm going to
try to do the different plots in the story justice. However, don't expect
me to have every little detail perfect. I haven't worked on this story
since September. This doesn't mean that the story is totally dead. It
just means that, for now, Alex and the crew are done with The Mirror.
Chapter 12
The Ending
Alex's POV
Wow... where does 4 1/2 years go? I can't believe it's almost five
years since Doug left high school behind. Can't say that I miss any of the
drama. Lord knows there was a lot of drama. I mean with Pete, we've all
had more than our fair share of what could have been a good movie or
television show. Where is Pete now? Honestly, I have no idea. The last
time any of us saw Pete was right after Grant got kicked out of his home.
It's rumored that his mom sent him to a mental hospital to finally get some
really needed help.
In case you're wondering, Grant moved in us and it's been an
awesome ride. Though I think sometimes, it was bit much on my parents.
They never once complained about having Grant around. I did hear my mom
complain once that we were a bit loud.
Grant and Jeff finally graduated from high school and have somehow
managed to stay together as boyfriends. They have gone to Utah to go to
school. I have no clue why they would want to go there, but Grant insisted
that Jeff should see the mountains, so off they went. Grant is majoring in
General Dance. Jeff is majoring in Computer science. Oh yeah, they are
actually attending Weber State.
It was strange leaving everyone behind when we moved off to
college. College was pretty scary at first. Sure Doug was kind of used to
moving around a bit, but not me. I had never really been away from home
before. Packing up my life and moving away was kind of scary. Even worse,
our plans of living together off campus didn't happen. We decided to live
in the dorms and settle for whoever ended up as our room-mates. The
greatest thing about college, though, was studying with Doug. When we were
not in class, in labs, or stuck in the library, Doug and I were
inseparable. It didn't take our room-mates very long to figure out what
was up. Funny how in college no one seemed to care about our sexuality.
Sure, there were some issues, but for the most part, life was good. Yeah,
it wasn't a cake walk or anything, but with Doug to boost me up, I could do
anything.
Anything is exactly what I did too, but our lives in college aren't
the real story here. Graduation was awesome. My parents planned a HUGE
open house for us. They flew Jeff and Grant in from Utah. Mom had pieced
together a memory book for each of us. Some of the pictures were
duplicates, but you could tell that she really put some time into it. As I
was flipping through my book, I came across some blank pages. One was
marked "My Son's Engagement". I looked over at Doug and smiled. He didn't
seem to notice my smile. Even if he did see my smile, he wouldn't know why
I was smiling. Another page was entitled "The Wedding Day". Again, I
smiled. I had always known that my parents were accepting of us. Somehow,
seeing that made me want to cry. Finally, the last page said simply
"Grandkids!" I don't know about Doug, but at this point I wanted to run.
We got so much money and so many presents. The best present that I could
have received came in the form of the keys to our apartment. Doug and our
parents saw to the paperwork, security deposit, and furnishing it. Our
first night in our apartment, we set the bed to good use. Believe me, that
bed saw some fairly heavy use that night. Still I couldn't get those pages
in my memory book out of my head.
That next week, Doug decided that we needed to take a trip. We drove
down to this place somewhere in the middle of Illinois. It's a place where
a ton of Mormons once lived back in the 1830's to the mid 1840's. They
have restored a butt load of the homes and put in some really nice old
fashioned gardens. The trip was perfect, although we got a lot of weird
stares from people. After spending all day traveling around the different
locations, Doug drove us out to this overlook area. I got out of the car
and started to snap some pictures of the Mississippi river. I didn't think
that Doug was going to get out of the car. He was acting a tad bit
strange, but I figured he was tired. I turned back to the car, and Doug
was just now getting out of the car. He came out and knelt down directly
in front of me. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a black box and
opened it up. Doug lifted a ring out of the box and placed it on my hand.
Pretty brave of him considering, he still hadn't formally asked me any
questions.
"Alexander, will you be my life partner?"
I wasn't sure that this was happening. There was no warning. I knew
that he loved me. I've even dreamed of him asking me, but it just never
happened. Although Doug had a romantic side to him, this whole
mini-vacation was a set up. Doug told me to get into the car, so I did,
thinking we must be on our way to a hotel or motel in order to celebrate.
Nope, he took me home.
He drove the car straight to my parents' house. Everyone who had
ever meant anything to us was in attendance. It didn't matter to me that
we couldn't actually be married. What mattered to me is that he took the
time to plan this out ahead of time. What surprised me even more was the
fact that my parents opened up their home for us. It wasn't a total shock,
but it made me feel like a million bucks. Everything, and I mean
everything, was perfect. That night I ended up with Doug in bed with me in
our apartment.
We've shared a bed quite a few times in the past, but tonight we
shared it as life partners. We no longer called ourselves boyfriends. He
was my partner. Doug has ensured me that he'll never stray and I told him
he had better not. What matters to me right now, is that my man is right
here, right now. I'm resting my head upon his chest. His skin is warm and
I can hear each gentle beat of his heart. I have to be the luckiest man in
all the world. Now... if you'll excuse me, Doug has been promising me a
night of love unlike anything that I've had before.
I have a feeling that we're sleeping in tomorrow...
