Tommy and Tanner,
Chapter 85

Gavin's son, Jaxon, had Easter Monday off from school, so the family stayed
over despite the fact that Susan and Quentin would be at their school most
of the day. They'd still have time together in the late afternoon and
evening. Gavin didn't mind driving late and letting the boys sleep in the
car on the way home. It was sometimes easier than keeping them entertained
in their car seats when they were awake.

He insisted on buying Chinese carryout from his favorite restaurant in
Middleton to avoid having any of them preparing dinner. It was much more
important to use the time bonding as a family. As a part of that, he
called Judge Lawrence to see if he could join them. Oliver was touched by
his gesture and immediately rescheduled a late appointment so that he could
accept the offer.

Since Natalie had packed up everything she could before Susan and Quentin
came home, it took very little time to get ready to leave when 8:00
p.m. rolled around. After many hugs and a few tears, the young family
departed for home.

Quentin soon excused himself to do homework in his room, leaving Susan and
Oliver on their own.

"I'm really touched by how Gavin's welcomed me. I have a feeling he
approves of our dating."

"He does. He told me some time ago that I shouldn't sit at home mourning –
not that I've had much time to do that with my job and all, but it has been
lonely at times. You and Quentin have been good for me."

"I hope you and I can continue to do things together. I know we haven't
dated long enough to talk about `forever,' but I do want you to know that
I'm developing feelings for you, Susan."

"And I for you," she responded.

Quentin was on his way to ask Susan a question when he caught them in a
passionate kiss. With a grin on his face, he hurried back to his room and
didn't emerge again until he heard the judge preparing to leave. Then he
went to the foyer to bid him a good night.

----------

Tommy and Tanner both had a text message from Hank which Tommy responded to
at lunch time on Tuesday. Hank had asked, "Who the H is Greta in IA and
how does she know we do design & construction."

Instead of texting back and forth, Tommy chose to call Hank and put the
phone between Tanner's ear and his so they could both hear what Hank had to
say.

Tommy began by explaining that Tanner and he had sent pix of the cabin and
the lady who arranging their wedding was in need of help on the project she
and her friend Jane Masterson were pursuing.

"You guys are my best PR," Hank laughed. "Since I figured you couldn't get
back to me from school without getting into trouble with your cell phones,
I called her right after I texted you. We have a job that will involve
some design work, but basically involve John on the site immediately."

Having already called Greta Johnson, Hank and Toby would be driving to Lake
Delhi the next day. John, the stone mason, would be going along, but in
his own work van with equipment.

Toby and Hank were being commissioned to design and craft a kind of
altarpiece to serve as a focal point at the front of the chapel. It was to
have several interchangeable panels so there would be Christian iconography
for some weddings, a Star of David for Jewish rites, and stylized floral
designs for clients who were Muslim or who didn't want religious symbolism.
Some of the panels could be intermingled for use in inter-faith services.

The guys would spend time in the partially finished structure,
photographing it and getting a feel of the space so their finished product
would fit it. They wanted this to be a work of art not only for the ladies
who commissioned it, but also for their young friends who would be the
first to use it.

The other news he had for them was that he and Toby were becoming property
owners too. A building that had been repossessed in Barrington in an ideal
location for their expanding design business had gone on the auction block.
With the help of their dads, they had put together enough capital to make
an offer on it. Their bid was so low that they had feared they might not
get it. However, their offer had been accepted and they were thrilled.

Besides having a great space for offices and a display room on the street
level, the second story consisted of two apartments. The larger had two
bedrooms and the other had a single one. They planned to live in the big
one and rent out the other to help with expenses.

"You wouldn't happen to know a compatible guy, or a couple, who could use a
decent place to live at a very affordable price, would you?" Hank asked.
"We'd cut a deal with someone who'd be willing to paint and do some general
maintenance work. The whole place needs a facelift inside, but it's
structurally sound and with some of our own additions to the façade can
be a really attractive place!"

"Actually, we just might know of a couple of guys. Please don't rent it to
anyone until we can check it out with them."

"We'll hold it for them if you recommend them. We don't get possession
until sometime in May anyway, but we do have a key to get in to take
measurements for the improvements we want to make, so we could show it.

This job in Iowa will give us another financial boost, but we're going to
be really busy in the next few months trying to make as much money as we
can. Building is picking up along with the economy. Things are looking
up!"

"Wow, he sounded really upbeat!" Tanner exclaimed after they'd gotten off
the phone. "Whom do you have in mind for tenants? Is it Barry and Larry?"

"Yup! You know how they've been trying to figure out what to do when their
parents find out about them. Since they're staying in the area and
starting at Harper instead of a four-year college in the fall, it could be
perfect for them. It's not a very long commute and they could live pretty
cheap. I have a feeling they're going to be making their own way and
counting every penny."

A moment later, Barry and Larry joined them at their table, and heard the
news. Both of them were eager to see the apartment, so Tommy called Hank
back to see if they could take a look after track practice or if he could
leave a key for them before heading for Iowa. Hank promised to get back to
them before the day was over.

----------

Track practice was cut a bit short because the coach had a doctor's
appointment and the guys had time to pick up the key from Hank so they
could check out the apartment. Tanner offered to drive and leave Barry's
car in the gym lot until later. He figured he and Tommy could afford the
gas more easily than their friends could and he wasn't particularly eager
to ride in Barry's huge old rattletrap.

Using their Garmin, they drove to the building without wasting any
time. They went up the back stairs to a rather large deck. At the top,
they turned to the right to the part of the deck which belonged to the
smaller of the two apartments.

The entry door led into a little hallway. To the left was the living room
and to the right, the kitchen. Although it was badly in need of paint, and
the carpet needed a serious cleaning, the place had a lot of potential.
Tommy and Tanner immediately began assessing what work would be needed to
make it livable. Barry and Larry hung on their every word because they
knew their friends had more experience from being property owners.

"This place is laid out really well," Tanner said. "Look at how the
kitchen is separated from the living room so company wouldn't see the mess
if they came before you got it cleaned up. The bathroom is screened off
from the living room, but convenient to it and the bedroom. This took
thought."

"I think it'll be great if it's not out of reach for us financially," Barry
agreed. "I don't mind paying part of our rent in work credits. I've helped
my dad with interior painting and I'm not bad."

"I'm eager to learn, and I'll do ANYTHING to get out of my house," Larry
chimed in.

"Hmm..., anything?" Barry grinned, licking his lips lasciviously.

"Yeah, with you, that is."

"Okay, keep your pants on, boys," Tommy giggled. "Do you have any
furniture to set up housekeeping?"

"I have my bedrooms set if we can get it out without my dad stopping us,"
Barry said. "It was a birthday present from my grandmother when I turned
16 and she thought I should have a bigger bed. Anyway, it's mine and I
plan to bring it so I can bed Larry down in it."

"Jeez! Give it a rest," Tanner snickered. "You can't be that horny all
the time."

"It's okay for you to joke about," Barry pouted. "You two can do it all
night every night if you want to. We're lucky to get it once a week!"

"Sorry," Tanner said. "I do understand how you must feel. Well, we'd
better go back to school so you guys won't have to explain why you're late.
You could let on as if that track practice ran a little longer than usual."

On the way to school, Tanner wasn't paying attention to the GPS and missed
a turn, making him take a slightly longer route. He was irritated with
himself until he spied a futon on the curb with a sign that said it was
free.

He immediately pulled over and everyone jumped out to look it over.

"Darn, there's a broken slat," Larry noticed.

"It wouldn't be difficult to repair." Tommy advised.

"But how could we haul it, and where could we keep it?" Barry wondered.
"We don't want our parents to suspect what we're going to do until AFTER
we've moved out!"

"It can be fixed and stored in the workshop in our garage," Tommy offered.
"And, I'm calling Devin right now to see if he can come over with his
pickup."

A few minutes later, Devin and Andy arrived and the boys loaded it up.
Just as they were about to leave, the home owner came out to thank them for
taking it off his hands.

"Could you use an old recliner as well? It's not in bad shape. Please
come see if you'd like it."

The next scene was that of the chair being loaded up as well.

"I'm in trouble if I don't get home pretty soon," Barry groaned.

"I thought your old man was afraid of you," Larry said.

"He is, but if he's been drinking, he'll still rag on me half the evening
with questions about where I've been and who I've been with. I think he
suspects that I'm seeing someone. I had to make up an alibi for the time
we made love at Tommy and Tanner's house."

"Devin and Andy can head to our house with the furniture, I'll drop you at
your car, and Tommy and I can take Larry home to save you time. Then we'll
help unload the stuff at our house," Tanner suggested.

Everyone agreed it would be the simplest plan to keep them from being much
later than usual and Barry and Larry, who might be in trouble, could moan
about how intense practice had been and let their fathers assume they'd run
overtime.

----------

"Who dropped you off? I didn't recognize the car." Larry's father asked the
moment he got home. "I'm glad to see it wasn't Barry. He's a bad
influence."

"It was Tanner and Tommy Torrance. We all run track together."

"Aren't those the boys who were interviewed on the news about becoming
domestic partners so young?"

"Um, yeah."

"I don't want you hanging around with them either! It's not safe!"

"Being partners doesn't seem to affect their driving any. I'm sure I
wasn't in any danger."

"You know what I'm talking about, smart ass. You'll stay away from that
kind as long as you live under my roof!!!"

Larry bit his tongue, avoiding an argument with the man. He knew it would
only make matters worse if he responded.

After supper, he surreptitiously took several large trash bags to his room
and began to pack his clothes. He started with his winter things so that
if he got caught, he could say he was storing them in order to have more
room in his closet for his summer clothes. He was determined to leave the
minute Barry and he had a place to live.

----------

When the call had come to help pick up the futon, Devin and Andy had just
gotten cleaned up and dressed after enjoying their unexpected early
dismissal from practice. It wasn't that they were as starved for love as
Barry and Larry, but they were horny teens who were ready for sex at the
drop of a hat.

"I take it the couch thing is for Barry and Larry." Andy noted as they
headed for the pickup. "Does that mean they're moving in together when
school's over?"

"That's the way I read it."

"Hmm... I wonder if this is a couple of buddies sharing expenses or
possibly their bodies," Andy grinned. "Remember the incident at the hotel
last spring?"

"I've been watching them and I think they have the hots for each other. I
know the look Larry has always had when he's with Barry and I thought it
was all one-sided, but in the past couple of weeks - and what I think went
on at the cabin - I'm pretty sure it goes both ways." Devin speculated.

"I hope so. They've both made a lot of changes in their lives and become
nice guys. I hope they get to fuck each other's brains out!"

"Ooh, Andy, what a dirty-minded boy you are!"

"You love it and you know it."

"Yeah I do."

"There they are up ahead."

----------

Since their parents were supportive of their relationship, life was much
easier for Lance and Michael than it was for many gay teens. They spent
their extra minutes, after the abbreviated practice, in Lance's bed once
they'd dropped Damon off.

It was quite pleasant having the time for leisurely love-making on a school
day afternoon. They could take their time undressing one another with all
the sniffing, licking, and kissing they loved so well.

Their passion rose to a fever pitch and they soon found the release they
craved. In the afterglow, they talked about the sleeping arrangements for
the upcoming state track meet.

"Do you think we were stupid to agree to room with Barry and Larry again,
after last spring?" Lance asked.

"Nah, they've turned out to be okay. Besides, I'm not sure anyone else
would have taken them and I have a soft spot for underdogs," Michael
grinned.

"But we'll probably have to watch how we act in front of them," Lance
pouted.

"Maybe and maybe not; I think the rumors about them after the track meet
last spring must be true. They didn't make it a point to go off with the
straight boys when we were at the cabin last. I'll bet the farm they were
getting laid somewhere in private. We'll have to feel them out about it."

"You'd probably like to `feel them up' about it," Lance joked.

"C'mere you horny devil; I wanna wrestle that anaconda again."

"Okay, I could have a go at the mamba."

"Wha'chu talkin' `bout, white boy? You making fun of yo chocolate
boyfriend?" Michael joked, trying to sound like the street boy he
definitely was not.

"No way! I love my dark-skinned Romeo! I learned the word from a
crossword puzzle yesterday and I've been waiting for an excuse to use it.
A mamba is a long, slender, dangerous African snake and can be green or
black. Its bite can be fatal. I think that pretty well describes this
serpent," Lance snickered as be leaned in to lick up a drop of precum.

"I like that name for him," Michael grinned. "You can tame him by sucking
the poison out if you want. I'll do the same with the anaconda!

Getting into the 69 position, they began making good on their quest to
subdue the serpents and, by doing so, make the world a safer place.
