By the time Tommy got home he was exhausted. Despite that and the stress
of the day Tommy had promised Danny that they should talk to Mr. Smith
about sex.

"Dad can we talk with you in Danny's room for a few minutes."

"Sure boys, let me grab a beer and I'll be right there."

After a few minutes Mr. Smith came into Danny's room. "What's up, boy?"

"We have some questions about sex, Dad."

"Perhaps I should get something a little stronger than beer. But seriously
boys, I want to talk with you too. We can't stop you from experimenting,
but there are some things you need to understand. Some of this is kind of
complicated, so hear me out before you ask questions, okay?"

"The first thing you have to understand is how the mind works. Your mind
is similar to a computer. If you put garbage in, you get garbage out.
Your sub-conscious acts on what your conscious mind is fed. Up to this
point we have not been concerned about your relationship because it's
normal for boys to be close at your age, and about half the time some sex
is involved. Most boys your age start thinking about girls and start
dating. Some don't."

"I've read everything I can get my hands on on the subject of
homosexuality. It's the same old argument just on a different subject.
There is one group of people who say all your actions are based on
heredity. Others believe that all actions are based on environment. For
example, I'm drinking a beer. Some would say that I inherited a taste for
beer from my parents and 100's of years of my family drink beer. Others
would say that I hated the taste of beer the first time I drank it and,
after drinking enough over a long enough period of time, I acquired a taste
for it."

"If you talk to a gay activist, he will tell you that they were born gay.
They take no responsibility for their behavior. On the other side, the
conservative right says that homosexuals choose to be gay. Most gay people
struggle with their sexuality for some period of time. Some struggle with
it their whole life."

"It's not normal for 14 year old boys to have adult sex on a daily basis.
I define teen sex as masturbation and adult sex as anything beyond mutual
masturbation. Teen experimentation beyond masturbation might occur from
what I've read once a year. Not every day."

"I believe that homosexuality is a combination of heredity and environment.
I believe you have no choice who you love, and can choose who to have sex
with. You can choose to live what is called a gay lifestyle, or you can
choose not to have sex with anyone.

"I believe that you two love each other. I found out just how deep your
love was last summer when you were separated. I don't want to see either
of you get hurt. As I said, I don't think you two chose to love each
other. It just happened. How are you going to feel a year from now,
Tommy, if Danny falls for a girl, and decides he wants a relationship with
her? What if two years from now, Tommy, you run into your soul mate who
just happens to be a girl and you don't get together with her because
you're preoccupied with a relationship with Danny. The odds are guys, that
both of you will grow up to be straight. Even if you screw like rabbits
for the next two years."

"There is little in life that is more rewarding than having your own
children. That is the purpose of sex. Girls and boys your age shouldn't
have sex, because they can't handle the responsibilities of parenthood. We
haven't talked about having sex with different partners, except briefly,
and that opens up a whole new can of worms. Do you understand what I'm
trying to tell you boys?"

"Yes," Danny responded. "You're telling us that having sex is an adult
decision. And if we have homosexual sex on a regular basis it's more
likely that we'll grow up gay."

"That's exactly what I'm saying."

"But what if Danny is my soul mate and we are meant to be together. We
already love each other. What if we really are gay and chose not to have
sex with each other! What difference is it going to make if we do it now,
or four years from now."

"You already know the answer to that, Tommy. Danny isn't capable of making
the decision. But you are!"

"Oh shit, I hadn't thought of that. I'm legally considered an adult and
Danny is considered a minor even though we are the same age."

"I would say when it comes to sex or cigarettes even though your are
emancipated, Tommy, it's still against the law. Lots of parents supply
their underage children with cigarettes, alcohol, condoms, and birth
control pills. What I'm telling you is, you must choose. But choose
wisely. And keep an open mind."

"You're the second one today to tell me to keep an open mind when it comes
to my sexuality."

"What I'm hearing from you, Dad, is instead of having sex with Tommy, I
should buy a stack of girly magazines and jack off to them to explore my
heterosexual side."

"That's not what I'm saying at all, Danny."

"Well, you said 'garbage in, garbage out,'" Danny said with some
frustration in his voice. "Like being gay and having sex with another boy
is sick."

"I also said lots of other things. What I'm really saying is, live your
own life, but be concerned with your family's feeling at the same time.
Should you meet a girl at school who gives you this funny feeling in your
stomach and you're attracted to her, why not ask her out? But how do you
do that without hurting Tommy's feelings? You two have been best friends
as long as you can remember, and boyfriends for over a year now; and we've
supported you. Now you're telling me you want adult sex. I don't have an
easy answer for either of you. If you were in a girl/boy relationship 100
years ago, you would be getting married. Back then at 14 years old,
couples who were in love got married. Things are different today.
Education is your future, not barely surviving on some farm. Also 100
years ago people didn't live as long as they do today, so they had to go
about the business of having babies as soon as possible. If Tommy was a
girl, Danny, and you asked me for permission to have sex with her, I would
have to say no."

"Listen, I've thrown lots of information at you. I want both of you to
think about what I've told you and we'll talk later this weekend. In the
meantime, do what you two feel is best."

After he left the room Danny spoke first. "So what do you think?"

"I think we're wearing him down."

"You think so?"

"Yeah, I do. I don't care what he says, I'm Danny-sexual."

"Then I'm Tommy-sexual."

"You sounded like you were getting pissed off for a while there, Danny."

"That's because he was too close to the truth, and I don't want to ever
lose you, Tommy - especially to a girl. I'll fight for you. I mean, can a
girl compete with this?" Danny starts shaking his butt around and then
gyrates his hips, thrusting out his groin. "What does a girl have that I
don't?"

"Tits, pussy, personality."

"Fuck-you."

"Okay, but not until you're on the pill."

"Fuck-you, and the horse you rode in on."

"The horse I rode in on has a supercharger."

"But seriously, Tommy, Dad said we should do what we feel is best. What do
you think?"

"I think we've waited long enough, but I do want our first time to be
special."

"You've been reading too many Nifty Stories, Tommy."

"And you are way too easy, Danny. I was thinking about a trip to the
nicest hotel in Chicago; just the two of us, for a weekend getaway."

"Dad's not going to like it. He's going to say we didn't listen to a word
he said. And Mom is going to have a shit fit. There is no way she's going
to let her only baby boy spend a weekend alone with a child molester."

"This is a big step for us, Danny. The folks know they can't stop us.
Hell, we could be doing it three times a day. Your Dad just spent all his
time trying to give us a guilt trip. I say we give them something to think
about. They might not like it, but I bet they let us do it."

"Doing it three times a day sounds good to me, Tommy. Look, Tommy, just
having you here is romantic enough for me. Why would we wanta rub the fact
that we're having sex in the folk's face. I say, 'fuck taking it slow any
longer.' I need you, I need you now, and I need all of you. Either one of
us could be dead tomorrow. You wanta do it, I wanta do it. If the state
police want to use you bad enough, they're not going to give a rats ass
about you having sex with your boyfriend. Besides, how is anyone going to
know unless we tell them, or rub it in their faces? We both want it.
We're not hurting anyone."

"Okay Danny, I get it." Danny had been getting louder and louder. One of
the advantages of knowing someone your whole life, is knowing when someone
is about to lose control. Tommy could see that Danny was getting pissed
off. Danny felt that he'd been more then patient. He also knows that
Tommy can be stubborn. Danny operates on instinct; if it feels good do it,
while Tommy is less impulsive. Tommy would never do something that he
knows is wrong just because it feels good, or feels right. Over the years
Tommy's rational thinking had kept Danny from getting into trouble on more
than one occasion.

Don Smith also realized that his agreement, at least as far as Danny was
concerned, fell on deaf ears. And the funny thing was, he even thought he
knew that he'd made good and valid points. He really, in his heart, didn't
feel that, in Danny and Tommy's case, any of his arguments applied. He was
mainly just trying to get the boys to think with something besides their
cock. Don had anticipated this day for sometime. He went to his closet
and pulled out a shoebox. He didn't want to embarrass himself, or the boys
anymore than he had already, so he walked to the boy's room, put the box on
the floor just outside the door, knocked and walked away.

Danny said, "Come in," and after the door didn't open, he walked over and
opened it. Seeing the box on the floor, he picked it up and walked over to
the desk where Tommy was sitting. He opened the box and pulled out a box
of condoms and a tube of lube.

"What the hell?" asked Tommy.

"That's Dad's way of saying if we can't be good, be careful," replies
Danny.

Danny and Tommy ended up not having sex that night; not because they didn't
want to. Tommy fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Tommy had
set his alarm for 5:30 AM. He didn't feel like getting out of bed, but he
knew he had to meet with Roy this morning. After going to the bathroom
Tommy dressed in his sweats and running sneakers. After securing his
weapon, he went down stairs and drank a large glass of juice before heading
out.

Tommy quickly jogged the five blocks to Roy's house and wasn't surprised to
see him standing there waiting for him. Without saying a word Roy fell in
step along side of him. The two of them ran in silence as they
concentrated on their pace and breathing. At the two-mile mark Tommy asked
Roy if he wanted to turn back. Roy replied that it was up to him to set
the distance and the pace. Tommy thought of the movie "Heartbreak Ridge"
when Clint Eastwood outran all those young Marines just by keeping his
pace. "I think we should start back, I don't want to overdo it. This is
as far as I usually run anyway." Roy just smiled and enjoyed Tommy's
companionship.

As soon as they returned to Roy's house they sat down on the porch to get
their breath. "What does 'exploited' mean?" inquired Tommy.

"Very good opening, Tommy. This might not be the dictionary definition,
but it means to grossly take advantage of someone in order to reward
yourself. For example, I take nude photographs of you and pay you $50
dollars. Then I post them to the Internet and make $50,000. Or, a
14-year-old boy who is working full time and doesn't have a chance to
concentrate on school, or on just being a 14 year-old boy. Or having a
government that insists that you give up your dreams and hopes, so you can
spend your whole life doing their bidding."

"Tommy, I know you know."

"Roy, I know you know I know."

"How's Director Johnson?"

"I don't like him, he's manipulative. He speaks highly of you and yet I
can tell he'd just as soon see you dead as alive. I don't trust him."

"You have good instincts and excellent observational skills. Actually he'd
rather see me dead, but enough of Johnson. Tommy, I've had my eye on you
ever since last summer. Just as you have ways of getting information, so
do I. My whole life I've wanted to teach. That's what I went to school
for. The government had other ideas. I feel I can use this opportunity to
get a job teaching part-time and help you the rest of the time, Tommy. I
have a plan, but I need to know if you want to work with an old fart like
me?"

"I really don't know how to respond to the question. Adults usually just
tell me what I'm expected to do. I really hardly know you. If what others
are saying about you is true, I would be a fool to say I wouldn't be
honored to work with you."

"But you have questions, Tommy?"

"Yeah, as a matter of fact, are you reading my mind. Why me? That's my
biggest question."

"Why not you? You are one of a kind. Out of 5 billion people you are the
only one who can do this. However, unlike me when I was younger, you have
a choice. I think that's enough for one day, Tommy. I'm going to have a
talk with Sergeant Miller today. I'll meet with you at the state police
office after school and we can talk more."

"Thanks for the run, Roy, see you after school."

Roy had moved to this area knowing that it was a good place to get lost.
The neighborhood was mixed racially and mostly middle income. The cost of
living is high, but that was of no concern to Roy. Living out of a
suitcase and putting away some his income for 25 years, left him with a
pretty good bankroll. He also received an excellent pension as part of his
separation agreement. He still had all his ID's and could return to active
duty at any time, with his choice of position.

Roy had first seen Tommy jogging with Mr. Smith last summer. Then later
he'd seen him running with Mike and Mark. With his trained eye he'd seen
that they were wearing weapons. Roy knew about the training at Great Lakes
that summer and was able to find out information about all three boys.
He'd followed online the local news reports of the arrest of Tommy's father
in Springfield. Roy suspected that Tommy was being used as bait to get his
dad to implement the Springfield chief of police. With Roy's national
security clearances he could get his hands on any information from federal,
state, or local databases on his home PC. Whenever a big news story broke,
he'd get on his PC and, like Paul Harvey, get "the rest of the story."

Roy knows that the teen crime rate in DuPage and Cook counties is higher
than anywhere else in the mid-west. Everyday some teenager dies going to
school, coming home, or at school. Roy's seen the futile attempts to make
schools safer. Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies don't
work well together. The state and federal agencies get involved when it's
perceived that local government can't handle matters. They step in and
make local police feel inadequate; instead of helping them, they bully
them. Cook County has far greater resources for dealing with school and
teen crime than does DuPage County. Local police are overwhelmed and have
asked the state for help. Roy is thinking about all these things while
he's waiting to speak to Sergeant Miller.

Sergeant Miller, after keeping Roy waiting for about 15 minutes, came out
of his office and greeted him and led him back into his office.

"Here's the skinny, I'm in charge of the investigative branch of the DuPage
county state police. One of my areas of responsibility is to investigate
crimes that are committed at schools. We work with local police and the
county. We have undercover officers working with DEA and an anti-gang
taskforce. We do student and locker searches. We install metal detectors
at schools where the most weapons are found in lockers. Because schools
are public property, we don't need reasonable cause to search anyone. Most
of the schools in this county have aumed security. The bottom line is,
anyone who can afford to send their kids to private schools, do."

"How long do you have?"

"You are good Roy. Two things have to happen. First, we have to show
positive results within 6 months. We have to get at least as many arrests
as two undercover adult police officer get in a six-month period. And the
youth police working with Chicago Public School have to also have good
results. Many in the department feel it's a waste of money to train kids
to catch kids. Chicago is using kids in teams. They basically have two
rookies as a team. Blind leading the blind. What good would it do to put
uniformed state police officers in schools? I'm not a fan of undercover
officers in schools. It's dangerous. I'm not a fan of putting untrained
kids like Tommy in harms way either."

"So you feel that local uniformed police should be placed in schools in
DuPage County?"

"Unless you can show me a way to completely clean up a school within 3
months, I don't see a point in even trying. I'm not going to endanger
Tommy like those jerks in Springfield, just to have a feather in my cap.
If it's possible to clean up a school in three months then we can do three
schools a year. In Chicago they are using overkill this year. They have
about 60 officers in two schools right at the moment. They have a year to
clean them up. I'm looking to do the same thing with two or three officers
in one third of the time. Director Johnson informed me that if you run
into drug problems and have DEA friends you could get involved. Or if you
run into gang problems, you can get FBI working on a RICO case. Delegation
is the key. If the school administration can deal with a kid smoking in
the bathroom, let them."

"My plan is to have Tommy operate as a plain clothed officer. How would
you be able to support him?"

"I'm a trained teacher. I can work as a sub or an aid for about a month
and a half while I discern your offenders. I have unique methods of
discerning the good, the bad, and the ugly. We are going to need a
uniformed state police officer to help with background checks, paper work,
and arrests. I'll coach Tommy, and support him and the uniformed officer
in the arrests. I have no problem getting any support I need from the DEA,
FBI, ATF, or any other federal agency. Your goal for this project, with my
help, is realistic. My salary is paid for by the federal government, so
that's not a problem."

"Why are you offering to do this? Don't bullshit me. I'm old school."

"The Truth? I'm attracted to Tommy emotionally. I can't explain why I'm
so drawn to this boy, but he's not the first one I've been drawn too."

"If you would have told me anything else I'd have told you to get the hell
out of my office and never come back. Are you sure there's not going to be
a problem with sexual attraction to Tommy or some other boy you run into?"

"I promise you, that if an attraction does come up, I'll suppress it."

"Better to suppress it than to be found after bleeding to death tied to a
fence with your balls cut off. And that would be merciful compared to
going to prison."

"I have to tell you that I appreciate working for someone who says what's
on his mind, instead of playing mind games like Director Johnson and many
other's I've worked for."

"I'm glad to see you know who's boss."

"Well it's been obvious from the start, through our banter, that you've
been trying to establish your position as alpha male. I'll let you live
that allusion as long as it's to my advantage. After all, you did just
fine before I came along and you'll still be here long after I'm gone. By
the way, you have three other men waiting outside that you are about to
interview. The guy named Sean Collins is the one you're looking for. He
has the money he embezzled in a safety deposit box under his girl friend,
Sandy Jeffery's name. You will also find two plane tickets and false
passports and unlimited visas departing tomorrow for Bangkok, Thailand.
The bank is First National on North Avenue. Tommy should be here any
minute. Unless you have more to tell me?"
