The next couple of days progressed quickly for everyone. Tommy, with Roy's
assistance, got caught up with his schoolwork. Danny, Tommy, and Roy
continued to bond. Don Miller, with Roy's tip, made his arrests and
recovered the money that was stolen. Don never asked Roy how he knew who
committed the crime. Saturday, Danny and Tommy rode their motorbikes most
of the day. Sunday, things started to move even quicker.

Danny had decided that learning self-defense from Roy, with Tommy, was a
good idea. However, he didn't understand why he had to get up at 5:00 on a
Sunday morning.

"Come-on, Danny, get up," said Tommy. "We have to be at Roy's house by
5:30."

"I don't want to!"

"You did last night, Danny."

"And I still want to learn self-defense. I just don't want to do it at
5:00 in the morning."

Tommy pulled the sheets off Danny and started dressing him. Danny just
acted like he couldn't move, and let Tommy do all the work. By the time
Tommy was putting Danny's shoes on he was fully awake in more ways than
one. Apparently, being dressed by Tommy had the same effect on Danny as
Tommy undressing him. Tommy gave Danny a gentle squeeze.

"That feels good, Tommy, keep doing that."

"When we get back home. Now, lets go!"

Tommy and Danny jogged over to Roy's house. Roy made them drink some
orange juice, and then led them to his basement. Half of Roy's basement
was filled with exercise equipment, complete with treadmill, bowflex, (as
seen on TV), free weights, exercise bicycle, several punching bags, and
some padded floor mats. Every piece of equipment was top of the line.

"It might be too early to think, but can either of you tell me the best
defensive move you can make?" Roy questions.

"I know," says Danny with an evil grin. "Kick them in the balls."

"Under the right circumstances, that's probably a good move, Danny, but
that's not what I'm looking for. This might not sound like the manliest
thing to do, but the best way to defend yourself is to run away. Run to
where there are lots of people. You might not be able to run as fast as
someone bigger then you, but you can train to run further."

"Last summer they taught us to back away and find cover when dealing with
someone with a gun or knife." Tommy interjected. "I guess I never really
considered running away as self-defense."

"Even Police Officers have to run away from time to time. If you are out
numbered, and don't have back-up coming, what else can you do? The best
thing you can do is hit them with pepper-spray and run like hell. I'm
trying to make a point here, guys. Danny, I want you to punch me in the
stomach as hard as you can!"

Danny could see Roy was ready for him, and punched him as hard as he could.
Roy never even flinched.

"Is that all you got, Danny?" Roy asked. "We're going to have to spend
some real time on your boxing technique. You are aiming for the wrong
place. You're aiming for the front of my stomach instead of aiming for my
back. If you aim for my back, you will punch through with more follow
through and effectiveness. NOW! Listen real carefully! The best defense
is to have good conditioning. I've been doing 100 sit-ups a day since I
was your age. And, I know how to flex my muscles. If I wasn't ready for
you to hit me, you would have probably knocked the wind out of me. So,
let's start our training by doing some sit-ups."

Together, they spent the next half-hour doing basic exercises that didn't
require any of Roy's fancy equipment. Roy explained that you don't need
fancy equipment to stay in shape. Roy and the boys then drank some water
after which, Roy showed them how to do some basic moves for defense. None
of which included kicking someone in the balls!

Roy had Tommy and Danny practice on each other. They ended up wrestling
around on the floor mats. Roy didn't stop them. Neither one had a clear
advantage. Soon, both of them had raging hard-ons tenting their sweats.
Danny got embarrassed.

"I'm sorry, Roy. Here you are taking your time to teach us, and we're just
playing." Danny says.

"Playing is okay, you need to blow off some steam once in a while."

"Steam's not the only thing Danny is good at blowing off!" Tommy giggles.

"Fuck you, Tommy, and the horse you rode in on!" Danny shouted.

"Only if you kiss me first."

"Tommy, you're embarrassing me in front of Roy."

"Actually, boys, I think it's time we talked about your relationship - but
not here. Let's get some breakfast at Denny's. I'm buying. They're
having a special on their Grand Slam breakfast. Do you need to call your
parents to let them know where you are going?"

"We told them not to expect us until lunch time, so we have plenty of time
before they are expecting us." Danny replied.

They got to the restaurant, and still had to wait about 15 minutes. Sunday
mornings at Denny's are really busy. After ordering breakfast, Roy got
right to the point. "I feel it's important that we talk about the
relationship that you boy's share, and how it effects Tommy's job. I'll
get right to the point. By the end of December, Tommy will be going to a
different High School. He's going to leave a bunch of pissed off kids
behind who are bound to take it out on you, Danny. Let's change direction
for a minute."

Roy looked back and forth between Danny and Tommy for about a minute.
"There is nothing more important than your education. The next few years
will determine the rest of your life. You are both good students, but you
are at the age where it's easy to get distracted. Also, you have found
something that can't be replaced. You have found true love. When I was
your age, I had it rough. My dad split when I was born, and my mother had
dropped out of high school to have me. Her parents kicked us out with she
turned 18, and she never went back. I'm not sure how we survived the first
few years, because I don't remember, and she never talked about it. I do
remember her working two jobs, as a waitress and a barmaid. That was just
to keep us in the small one-bedroom apartment she rented. She was never
around while I was growing up. I became determined to make something of
myself. Mom died when I was in the college that I went to on a
scholarship. She didn't have insurance so she waited too long before
seeing a dentist; a tooth infection killed her."

Roy again looked back and forth between Tommy and Danny. "In high school,
I saw kids throwing away their futures just like my parents did. Only half
the students who started in my college class graduated. Just graduating
college doesn't make you successful. You have to work hard and make good
decisions. What I'm trying to tell you is that you have to be as prepared
for life as you possibly can be. You have to be willing to go anywhere,
and do anything, and even then, there are no guarantees. Life is a bitch!
Having a non-traditional relationship makes things that much more
difficult!"

Just then the food arrived. Having gotten up early and working out, the
three of them made the food disappear quickly. Danny was the first to
speak. "I've been through this speech a few times before Roy. I already
know where you're going with it!"

"No! You don't know, Danny. I'm not telling you that Tommy is going away.
I'm telling you that you have choices that you have to make that will, as a
result, decide whether or not you and Tommy will be able to stay together.
Lots of them over the next few years. But, right now, you have a really
important decision. When Tommy goes to another school in a few months, do
you want to go with him, or stay where you are?"

"You can do that?" Danny asked with a surprised look on his face.

"Yes, after talking with your parents and getting their permission."
Replied Roy, "but it might make it more difficult to find a good college
later.

"I don't care about that as long as I can be with Tommy."

"What do you want to be when you are older, Danny?"

"I want to be a writer." Danny explained. "I'm not sure yet just what
kind of writer. Last year I worked for my junior high newspaper."

"Then you'll need a fall-back job. Most writers would starve if they
didn't have another job. Many writers work for newspapers. You'll need at
least a BA Degree in literature with a teaching certificate. Just in case
you can't find anything writing, you won't go hungry. What I'm saying,
guys, is I feel it's better for everyone if Danny sticks with Tommy, no
matter where Tommy goes. It might not be easy, but it could save Tommy's
life. I don't like the idea of Tommy being on his own. I need someone to
watch his back. I also realize that being together can help your
relationship. It's going to take a bunch of extra work on your part,
Danny, but it could save your life too. You're both going to need to get a
good score on your SATs."

The rest of the day kept Roy very busy. Friday, he talked to the High
School Principal, Mrs. Blake. She had decided to use him as a substitute
teacher. They decided that he'd use his alter ego's name Charles Brown.

He went out and bought new clothes so he would be dressed properly. It had
been many years since Roy felt this insecure about anything. Roy had come
a long way from the insecurity of his childhood. Roy didn't tell Tommy and
Danny about the loneliness he felt as a teenager. He was never able to do
what his classmates took for granted. Things like Boy Scouts, Little
League Baseball, and after school sports were just some of the activities
he couldn't do because he had no ride or money. He did have a paper route,
so he was able to buy clothes and school supplies.

His mother, before she died, was a slut. She had a different man over most
every week. None were around long enough for Roy to get to know. He rode
the bus to and from school, and read everything he could get his hands on.
This made him even more separated from his peers.

A neighbor in his 40's took an interest in Roy and got him interested in
physical fitness. He paid for a membership at the local YMCA, which was
within walking distance, and also got him involved in boxing and karate.
Roy, at 14 years old, never suspected that perhaps his neighbor had more in
mind than just being his friend. No adult had ever taken an interest in
him before.

Over the course of the next six months they did everything together. Roy
fell in love with his neighbor. It was the kind of love that a son has for
his father. However, his neighbor had other ideas. One evening during a
thunderstorm the unthinkable happened. His neighbor made a move on him
sexually. Roy's reaction was confusion and a broken heart.

He did what he always did to clear his mind. He ran away to be alone. This
time out into a raging storm. He had to find some place to be alone. He
ran into an open field. However, someone was watching him thinking he must
be crazy to stand out in the middle of a thunderstorm.

Roy cursed his father for leaving him, and cursed his mother for never
being there for him. Then he cursed his neighbor for destroying his trust
in him, and then he cursed God for allowing bad things to happen to him.
He never saw the flash or heard the rapport. It happened so quickly that
it knocked him right out of his canvas running shoes. A lightening bolt
had struck the ground less then a foot away from him.

Roy saw a bright light and his entire life flashed before his eyes. He
seemed to be floating, and everything was out of focus. Roy felt warm and
comfortable. He heard a commanding voice saying, "To him much is given -
much is expected!"

Roy opened his eyes and saw a young police officer in a yellow rain coat
looking down at him. "Today is your lucky day, son. It took me almost a
minute to get to you. You were dead. No heart beat and you weren't
breathing. I just learned a new procedure called CPR, and based on the
fact that you're breathing, it worked! You're going to have to go to the
hospital to determine just how bad you're hurt. It's not every day someone
is raised from the dead!" 'This dumb fucking kid just scared the living
shit out of me." Thought the cop.

"I'm sorry for doing something dumb, and for scaring the shit out of you."
Replied Roy.

The cop looked at him like he had two heads.

The phone rang and Roy picked it up. "Hello?"

"Hi, Roy, it's Don Miller. I have some news for you. I have an officer to
join your team. He was on his way out the door, but I convinced the
captain to give him one more chance."

"What's his story?" Roy inquired.

"The guy is a hot head. He thinks with his fists. He's a rookie right out
of police academy. He's only been on the force a year. I told the captain
that we had nothing to lose by assigning him to you."

"You're probably right. What I need him for doesn't require great people
skills. I can't promise anything, but between Tommy and I, perhaps he'll
figure it out. There's something I want to talk to you about. I want to
train Danny to watch Tommy's back."

"That's fine, but don't expect us to hire Danny too. It will be up to you
to get Danny's parents to approve home schooling. If the program works
out, I'd like to get my son Bill involved in it. It might help keep him
out of trouble the next few years. So far he's been a good kid, but, it's
not unusual for a cop's kid to go wild."

"We started self-defense training at 5:30 this morning. We plan on getting
together at least three days a week. Have him join us."

"The only way he'd get up at 5:00 AM is if the house was burning down
around him. Anyway, come see me after school tomorrow, and let me know how
it goes. I'll have a team there first thing in the morning for the locker
searches."

"Will do, see you later."

Principal Blake called an assembly first thing Monday morning.

"The purpose of this assembly is to notify the student body that changes
have been made on the way crimes committed on campus are handled. Your
lockers are about to be searched. We are looking for weapons and drugs.
We will have the state police joining our school. Some will be working
undercover - some will be in plain clothes - and some will be in uniform.
You all know that school is a drug and weapon-free zone. It's a felony to
have either one here. If you feel that you need to have a weapon to feel
safe here, I want to talk with you. I understand we no longer have a safe
environment here, but I can promise you that's about to change."

Thirty uniformed state and county police rushed into the auditorium with
hand-held metal detectors and a few drug-sniffing dogs. "Everyone stand-up
and place your hands on the shoulders of the person in front of you. If
you take your hands off the shoulders of the person in front of you, any
drugs or weapons on the floor around you will belong to you."

Roy had started his day jogging with Tommy. He told Tommy not to bring his
weapon to school with him, as he would be searched too. The only ones who
knew about the drug-weapon sweep were the state and county Police, and the
school administration.

Roy's assignment for that day was Substitute US Government Teacher. Within
5 minutes of the student starting to arrive, Before the assembly Roy
observed evidence being thrown into the nearest trash can, or given to
someone who promptly headed for the door. He saw three kids walk in, talk
to a friend, and walk right back out the door.

What the police officer who had tipped off a major drug dealer at the
school didn't realize was that Roy already knew who he was, and why he was
obstructed justice.
