FROM CHAPTER 16

"Yeah, kiddo, night to you too." Chad spooned back against the older
youth, pulling one of David's arms over his waist. After some slight
shifting, he was finally comfortable and settled into David's embrace.
David kissed the back of Chad's head, rubbed his palm on Chad's warm
stomach and faded into sleep.

LIFE GOES ON - DAVID AND CHAD #17 - Just The Facts

Once again, David was watching his blond boyfriend sleep. His morning
bladder had roused him from sleep, and no matter what he tried, he remained
wide awake. He was sitting with his back against the headboard with the
sheet pulled up to his waist watching Chad's peaceful face as he slept.
The muffled sound of Sunday morning traffic registered in the back of his
mind, but his attention was directed elsewhere. He smiled a little and ran
his fingers lightly over Chad's cheek. They really needed to talk, and
soon. If this was going to only be a summer thing, then that was okay.
What a summer to have. After David's previous assumptions and resulting
disagreement, he realized that Chad would have to be an equal partner in
the decision. David couldn't make his decisions for him.

He shifted a little, leaning his head back and closed his eyes. Would Chad
be willing to continue this relationship with David leaving in about a
month? He had tried to keep their intimacy somewhat casual this summer,
letting Chad take the lead - not knowing what would happen come August. He
knew what he wanted. His thoughts were interrupted as Chad sighed in his
sleep, his arm draping across David's thighs under the sheet. The sleeping
teen slid a little closer, his forehead resting against David's hips,
mumbled something unintelligible and settled back into his dreams. David
moved a hand gently to Chad's exposed back and rubbed in small circles.
The boy sighed again quietly, then once again became still.

He looked over at the pictures on the bureau, focusing on the one of him
and Kel. Mentally, he asked the grinning face next to his, "What should I
do?" Sometimes he wished there was an instruction manual. This 'playing
it by ear' stuff was a pain. Still rubbing Chad's back gently, he leaned
his head back again. Well, the first thing was to find out how Chad
actually felt. If this was just a 'curiosity phase,' then so be it. If it
was something more, that was even better. David smiled absentmindedly as
he thought about how much he loved the kid in bed with him.

He felt Chad stir, and looked down to see one of Chad's eyes looking at
him. "What are you grinning at?"

"How much I care for you," David answered.

"Oh, okay. Thought I was funny looking."

"Nah," David looked at the clock. "Go back to sleep kiddo, it's only
seven-thirty."

"Mmmkay," Chad mumbled, then rolled onto his side facing David and laid his
head on David's thigh, one arm sliding behind his back. David continued
his back rub as Chad's breathing deepened again.

Serious discussions weren't his strongest point, David thought. He had a
tendency to try to lighten them up, which seemed to cause problems.
Actions spoke louder than words, but he realized sometimes words were more
important. His thoughts remained in the same vein for another hour, then
he felt Chad stir again, tightening his arm around David's back. He smiled
as Chad briefly nuzzled against his sheet-covered erection, then rolled to
look up at him.

"I must look real funny when I sleep," Chad muttered. "You're looking at
me and smiling again."

"Yeah," David teased gently, "you make all these funny faces and stuff.
It's really quite entertaining."

"Well, I'm not the only one," Chad answered with a small smile. Then he
was rolling out of bed. "Gotta take a leak."

David chuckled and answered, "I like to LEAVE mine."

Chad grimaced over his shoulder on the way out the door. "That was bad."

A few minutes later, Chad was slipping back into bed, pressing his warm
body against David's side.

David's hand resumed rubbing Chad's back. "Have a good time yesterday?"

"Yeah, the best. Except when I puked."

"And up in the tower," David added.

"Yeah, that was dumb though."

"Not really, kiddo, I never thought you'd react that way though."

Chad chuckled softly. "I was really ready to punch you."

"Glad ya didn't. But you got used to it."

Chad nodded then stretched, pressing even tighter against David's side.
"Scratch my shoulder?"

"Yes, master," David laughed.

"Mmmm, yeah, a little lower," Chad instructed, then sighed. "Better."

David felt Chad's erection against his lower leg. "Doesn't that thing ever
go down?"

Chad thrust gently a few times against David's leg. "You love it." Then
his hand grasped David's matching hardon through the sheet. "I'm not the
only one."

"Guess not," David admitted as Chad's hand loosened and just rested on top
of David's erection.

"So what are we doing today?"

"Well, I dunno. Haven't thought that far ahead. What did you want to do?"

Chad shrugged. "Maybe a movie or something?"

David laughed, "Not a movie, after driving all that time yesterday, I don't
really feel like driving much."

"I'll drive."

"Yeah, right," David answered, an idea forming in his head. "Well, I think
we should get some breakfast, do a little straightening up then see what we
feel like doing."

"I'll have Cheerios, eggs, bacon, and toast."

"Start cooking," David laughed.

Chad sighed dramatically. "Don't you love me enough to fix me breakfast in
bed?"

David slipped his arms under Chad's shoulders, pulling him up face to face.
One hand moved to the back of the teen's head pulling his face closer. He
pressed his lips against Chad's, his tongue slipping into the warm,
slightly bitter tasting mouth of his boyfriend. After some initial
resistance, Chad relaxed into the kiss, matching David's actions with his
own. When the kiss had run its course, Chad pulled back, and frowned a
little. "Ugh, morning breath." David smiled, gently squeezing Chad's
neck.

"Maybe we oughta brush our teeth huh?"

"Breakfast first," Chad answered. "Cereal tastes nasty after doing that."

David hugged Chad briefly to him, then they got out of bed, slipping on
clean shorts and walked to the kitchen. They had just finished their
cereal when David reached across the table, grasping Chad's hands. "Let's
get ready, then I think we should sit around and talk for a while, okay?"

"Okay, I guess." Then Chad was standing up. "But I get the shower first."

David watched the teen head back into the bathroom and heard the shower
start. He washed the dishes as Chad showered, carefully keeping the water
he used from affecting the temperature of Chad's shower. This probably
wasn't the time to play pranks. The shower shut off and as he walked back
toward the bedroom, the bathroom door opened, revealing a soaking wet
teenager with a towel in his hand.

"You're dripping all over the floor, you goof," David laughed, his eyes
moving over the nude form of the teenager.

"Dry me?" Chad answered, grinning.

"Since when have I become your servant?" David asked, taking the offered
towel and beginning to dry off his wet boyfriend.

"Since I was ten," Chad joked, breaking out into giggles as David dug his
fingers into the teen's ribs.

David shook his head, continuing to dry Chad, then draped the towel over
his head and started rubbing. Chad leaned back against David as he rubbed
the towel over Chad's head. Finished, David reached over to hang up the
towel, then wrapped his arms around Chad's waist from behind. He turned
them to face the mirror, smiled softly, and whispered, "I love you so
much."

Chad returned the smile, then spun himself around in David's arms,
returning the hug. "Love you too, even though you didn't fix me
breakfast."

David popped Chad on the butt. "Brush your teeth, kiddo. I need a shower
too."

Chad briefly tightened his hug and as David removed his arms, reached for
the toothpaste. David took the opportunity to strip off his shorts and
turn on the shower. After brushing his teeth and his other normal duties,
Chad sat on the toilet seat and chatted with David as he showered.
Gingerly, David washed his hair, unwilling to reopen the wound that seemed
to be healing nicely. The water was turning cold as he finished, turned
off the shower and slid the curtain back. Chad's voice stopped as David
reached for the other towel. David glanced at the teen and grinned as he
saw Chad's eyes moving up and down his body. He laughed a little, shook
his hips, then started drying himself as Chad's conversation restarted.
Moving around Chad, he performed his morning ritual, then slipped on his
shorts.

"Ummm, I thought we were gonna go back to bed," Chad said.

David tousled Chad's still-damp hair. "Maybe later, kiddo. Need to do
some other stuff first."

"But, well...," Chad started.

"What, kiddo?" David asked softly.

"Ummm, well, like you're going back soon."

David knelt down in front of Chad, looking into his face. "Yeah, we need
to talk about that."

Chad nodded and reached for his shorts, slipping them on. He took David's
offered hand, pulling himself up. Still holding hands, they sat on the
sofa facing each other. David rubbed his thumb on the back of Chad's hand
and smiled.

"I don't want you to leave," Chad admitted softly, head down.

David almost teared up hearing those words from the blond boy sitting in
front of him. He reached out and raised Chad's chin so he could look into
his face. "I know, Chad. I sorta don't want to go either. But I have to
go back, I've got another two years." Chad nodded, his eyes starting to
glisten. "Hey," David said softly, pulling Chad into a tight embrace. He
felt Chad's shoulders shuddering as the tears finally came. "Shhh, it's
okay kiddo," he whispered. "It'll be okay, Chad," he continued to soothe
as his own eyes started to tear up. With some effort, he held the tears
back, and tightened his arms even more.

"It's not fair," Chad mumbled into his chest.

"It'll be okay, Chad. I swear."

Chad jerked himself out of David's embrace and stood up in front of the
sofa. "It's not fair. And it's NOT okay," he said again, angrily.

As David looked up at the upset youth, he thought that at least some of his
earlier questions had been answered. He smiled somewhat sadly at Chad.
"It has to be okay, kiddo."

"Why?" Chad spat.

David patted the sofa next to him. "Sit back down."

"No. Why does it have to be okay?"

David sighed, looking into Chad's angry face. "Do you love me, kiddo?"

"That's a real dumb question, Dave," Chad answered.

"Then say it."

Chad's shoulders slumped a little and the angry look started to fade. He
looked down at David through teary eyes. "I love you, Dave." Then he was
back in David's arms, sobbing on his shoulder. David held the teen as he
cried, wiping his eyes in Chad's already damp hair.

"That's why it has to be okay," David said gently after a few minutes. He
took a breath and continued talking into Chad's hair. "I love you too,
kiddo. A lot. I think I started loving you when I was babysitting you.
But it wasn't the time. There were...other things going on." Chad sniffed
and quieted as David kept talking. "I really never said anything. I
didn't know how you would react. I thought if I told you, you'd think I
was weird, and not want to hang around anymore."

Chad tightened his hug slightly and mumbled, "You ARE weird."

David chuckled softly. "And look what it got me. A cute guy that I love.
Maybe I oughta be weird more often." Chad remained silent, but again
tightened his arms briefly. "I didn't know how you felt either. I mean we
have a lot of fun together. I love having you around. No matter what we
do. I was thinking about that this morning while you were still asleep. I
figured we really needed to get this out in the open. And since I know how
you really feel, we can probably work something out. That is, if you want
to." Chad nodded and lifted his tear-stained face to look at David. "See?
It'll be okay."

Chad smiled slightly, then slid off David's lap. "I'm sorry for being a
baby."

"You're not being a baby, you goof. So don't even think that way."

Chad nodded and walked to the kitchen. David heard him blow his nose, then
almost shyly come back and sit beside David, leaning against him heavily.
Quietly he said, "I just thought you were being nice to me, ya know? I
mean I knew you liked me. I missed you so much when you were gone. And
now it's gonna happen again." David squeezed Chad's shoulder then slid his
arm around his waist.

"Well, I feel the same way. It's gonna be hard. But if you think you can
put up with it, we can probably do it. I mean I can come back home once in
a while. And I have breaks like at Christmas and all."

"But what are you gonna do? I mean like where will you stay?"

David sighed quietly. "I haven't quite worked that out yet. But we have
another month or so. We'll figure something out. I mean I'll have my car
and all, so I can come back whenever."

"Real life sucks."

For some reason, Chad's observation hit David's funny bone. "Yeah, it does
sometimes," he snickered. Then as Chad looked at him questioningly, his
snickers turned into laughter. He pulled Chad tighter against him as he
laughed.

"You're weird," Chad stated then began to smile.

"I must be," David admitted when his laughter died down.

"Guaranteed," Chad laughed.

David raised his eyebrows, then pushed Chad back onto the sofa, digging his
fingers into the exposed sides of his blond boyfriend. "Guaranteed, huh?"
he asked, his fingers still digging into Chad's ribs as the teen writhed in
laughter.

"Stop...it," Chad gasped.

"What's it worth?"

"Your....life."

"Oooooh, I'm so scared," David teased, his fingers now in Chad's armpits.

"Dave...stop...it...I'm...gon...na...throw...up."

David stopped tickling, placing his palms on Chad's naked chest. He
grinned down into the boy's red face. "Better now?"

"Yeah, but I have to piss now," Chad stated.

"Poor guy," David teased, standing up beside the sofa and offering a hand
up to Chad.

Chad took the offered hand and rushed to the bathroom. David straightened
the sofa cushions and started walking toward the bedroom. "Where ya goin?"

"Let's get dressed and go somewhere," David suggested.

"Thought you didn't want to drive," Chad replied, following him to the
bureau.

"Maybe a little bit," David grinned.

"Whatever, but I wish you'd make up your mind." Dressed, the left the
apartment and David drove for a while, looking for a good spot to spring
his surprise. He guided the car into a pull-off on the side of the road
and got out. "Where ya goin?" Chad asked, getting out of the car.

David grinned, walking around the front of the car and tossed the keys to a
surprised Chad, who barely managed to catch them. "You drive, I'm tired."

"No way, nuh uh," Chad replied. "I'll wreck."

"Nah," David scoffed, joining Chad at the passenger's side of the car.
"Try it. Otherwise we'll be stuck out here."

"Nuh uh," Chad answered, holding out the keys.

"C'mon, you can do it, it's not hard. You'll have Driver's Ed this year in
school anyway."

"But what if I wreck your car?" Chad asked, his defenses weakening.

"You won't," David stated firmly.

"But what if I do?" Chad asked, starting to move toward the front of the
vehicle.

David shrugged. "We'll get it fixed."

"Yeah, but..."

"Just drive," David ordered, grinning.

"Okay, okay, jeeez, no need to get nasty," Chad answered.

Nervously, Chad slipped behind the wheel. "Umm, Chad, you have to start it
first," David teased after a few seconds.

"Shut up, I know." Chad turned the key, jerking a little as the car
started. He wiped his palms on his shorts and looked over to David. "Now
what?"

"Okay, you're gonna hold the brake, put it in Drive, then let off the brake
and pull out onto the road. You shouldn't need to give it a lot of gas,
then just keep it out of the ditch on your side of the road." Chad nodded,
his eyes straight ahead. David watched as he shifted into Drive, then
lifted his foot off the brake. The car started moving, then stopped as the
front wheels hit the edge of the pavement. "Okay, give it a little gas,"
David urged. Nervously Chad punched the gas pedal, spinning gravel from
the back tires as they almost literally bounced onto the road. He was
thrown forward when almost immediately Chad hit the brake, hard.

"I can't do this," Chad complained.

"Sure ya can. Listen, just take it easy. Use the same foot for the brake
and the gas. Now, let off the brake and put your foot on the gas, but
don't press yet, okay?" Chad nodded and the car began to move, drifting
toward the other lane. "Okay, Chad, just turn a little so you're in the
right lane." Chad nodded again, his eyes locked out the windshield. As
the car began to move faster on the slight downgrade, Chad move his foot to
the brake. "No brake yet, kiddo. We're only going about ten miles an
hour, and the speed limit's thirty." Chad allowed the car to get up to
almost twenty-five before his foot moved back to the brake. "No brake,
Chad," David instructed again. "Give it a little gas, we're starting to
slow down." With David's continued directions, Chad was soon more
comfortable behind the wheel and was actually close to the speed limit as
they drove. "See, it's not so bad, is it?"

Chad shook his head slightly, eyes still boring through the windshield.
"Am I doing okay?"

"Doing fine kiddo, just need to relax a little," David chuckled.

"I am," Chad responded unconvincingly.

A few minutes later, David began to get a little nervous himself. As they
approached town, the road started getting a little busier. He noticed Chad
flinch a little every time a car passed them going the opposite way. As
their speed began to drop, David also took notice there was a car behind
them. "Speed up a little, kiddo. We've got someone behind us." Chad
glanced in the rearview mirror, then back forward. His speed dropped a
little more and the car behind them got even closer. "Asshole," David
thought. Then he suggested, "Tell ya what, at the next pull-off, put on
your blinker and pull off the road. I'll switch ya places." Chad nodded
and swallowed. Chad remembered the blinker as the next pull-off became
visible. This one actually had guardrail around it since it was next to a
slight drop off leading to a creek that paralleled the road. He slowed
even further, ready to pull off the road when the driver behind them laid
on the horn. Already nervous, Chad basically panicked. Before David could
tell him to settle down, he had turned off the road a little too soon.
David heard the back fender graze the corner of the guardrail, then was
once again jerked forward as Chad hit the brake.

"Okay Chad," he soothed, "put it in Park." Still staring through the
windshield, Chad pushed the lever into position, then started shaking.
"Hey man, it's cool," David chuckled gently. "You did okay, if that
asshole behind us wouldn't have been such a dick, it would have been
perfect." He reached over and squeezed Chad's shoulder, then got out of
the car to check for damage. When he reached the back fender, he was
surprised. Just two darker stripes about a foot long were the only
evidence of the brush with the guardrail. He ran his fingers over the
marks - they weren't even dented - more of a surface scrape.

"I wrecked your car," Chad groaned quietly, now standing beside David,
looking at the scrape marks.

David laughed softly. "No you didn't, look." Then he wet a finger and
rubbed at the darker marks. They lightened a bit as David rubbed his wet
finger across them. Then he smiled at Chad. "See? Not a big deal.
They'll probably wax out next time I wash the car. Are YOU okay?"

"Yeah, I guess," Chad admitted, settling down a little. "I'm sorry about
that."

"About what? It was your first time. No harm done. I remember when Dad
taught me how to drive one time in his truck. It's a three-speed stick, so
I had to worry about the clutch. He took me through town and we hit the
red light at the square. Except it was on a hill." David laughed a
little. "I kept stalling the truck and we had like eight cars behind us
before he finally got pissed enough to stop yelling at me and drive
himself. So you see? It's no big deal."

"Well, if you would have yelled at me, I probably would have beat the crap
out of you," Chad replied, his good humor coming back.

"And," David said dismissively, gesturing at the car, "this is just a
thing. As long as you're okay, it's cool. Although a major wreck would
have kinda ruined future plans."

"Oh, I never thought about that," Chad answered. "I don't wanna drive
anymore."

David draped his arm across Chad's shoulders. "But it didn't happen, so it
really isn't a big deal. C'mon, let's get back home."

As David drove back into town, he gently teased Chad in an attempt to
lighten his mood. By the time they were pulling into the parking lot, Chad
was once again laughing and joking with David.

"I'm hungry," Chad complained.

"You're always hungry," David scoffed, not getting out of the car. "Feel
like McDonald's?"

"Yeah, that's cool."

"Wanna drive?" David asked laughing. "Oww, not so hard or you WILL have to
drive," David griped, rubbing his arm where Chad had socked him.

After they had eaten, David drove back to the apartment. "I'll need to go
home soon," Chad complained as they walked in the door.

"Yeah, I know." He took Chad's hand and led him into the living room. He
turned to face the teen and wrapped his arms tightly around his waist.
Looking slightly down into Chad's eyes, he whispered, "I DO love you,
kiddo."

Chad smiled softly and puckered his lips. Not one to miss an opportunity,
David kissed the boy deeply, Chad responding by pressing himself tighter,
his arms tightening around David. Still wrapped in the kiss, David
shuffled to the sofa, guiding Chad down to sit on his lap. They broke the
kiss, and Chad buried his face in David's neck, hugging him tightly.
Remaining in the embrace for a few more minutes, Chad finally raised his
head. "Guess I oughta go," he said a little sadly.

"Yeah," David sighed, as Chad slipped off his lap.

Chad retrieved another set of clothes from the bedroom, leaving the worn
ones there to be washed, then was waiting for David at the door. David
leaned forward, giving Chad a brief kiss, then opened the door. It was a
quiet ride to Chad's house, each one lost in thought. As they pulled up to
the house, Chad grinned.

"What?" David asked.

"Nothin'. Comin' in?"

"Yeah, I guess I should huh? Tell your Mom and Dad how terrible you were
this weekend."

Chad snorted and got out of the car. David followed him inside and
followed him into the living room to join the elder Murrays.

"So? Did you have a good day?" Mrs. Murray asked.

Chad started laughing and rolled his eyes. David explained the reason for
their reaction to her innocuous question and she joined in their humor.
"But yeah, it was a real good weekend," David finally answered.

"The brat didn't get in your hair, huh?" Mr. Murray teased.

"Not too much," David snickered. "Nothing I couldn't handle."

Mr. Murray looked at his son closely. "You weren't a pain?"

"No, Dad, jeeez."

"Okay, just wanted to be sure."

"He wasn't, really," David assured the two adults. "He's always good
company."

"So anyway, son of mine," Mr. Murray grinned, "how was King's Dominion?"

For the next half-hour, David listened while Chad raved about the good time
he had, interjecting his own anecdotes where necessary. Mr. Murray raised
his eyebrows at David over the tower incident, and shook his head smiling.
David shrugged and turned his attention back to Chad's enthusiastic recount
of the day's events.

As Chad wound down, David stood up to leave. He said his farewells to the
elder Murrays and walked to his car, accompanied by Chad. Before getting
behind the wheel he hugged Chad briefly and whispered, "Love you." Chad
returned the hug and sentiment, waving until David pulled out of the
driveway.

David had some serious thinking to do. And only about four weeks in which
to do it.
