What happened in highschool

chapter 20

"What in gods name is going on in here?" a voice yelled from the doorway.
Shit. I scrambled for cover.

"Mum! Don't you know how to knock?" Aaron said from beside me.

"Well I'm glad I didn't look what I've found!" His mother sounded shrill as
she stood in his doorway, still dressed from an evening out.

"And what have you found? You knew we were together!"

"I'm going to have to ask you to leave Mattias. This is a family
discussion." His mother shifted to me so fast I was stunned.

"Um."

"Mum no! How dare you! I'm going to stay at Matt's tonight. I'll see you
tomorrow when you've calmed down. You know I'm gay. You know I'm with
Matt. I shouldn't apologise since you barged into my room, but I'm sorry
you, as my mother, had to see us like that." Aaron stood up with all the
dignity he could manage nude. He walked to the door nudged his surprised
mother clear and closed the door in her face.

I was in mild shock; clinging to the sheets so hard my knuckles were white.

"Um Aaron, what just happened?" I asked staring at the closed door.

Aaron sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. He opened his arms and I
finally let go of the sheet and held onto Aaron instead.

"I'm sorry that ruined everything." He whispered.

I hugged him harder. "It didn't ruin anything. Nothing could." I
grinned. "I can still feel you inside of me."

Aaron chuckled and looked at me. Then he got serious. "You remember all
that shit that I told you happened before we broke up? Well that's what
they're like. Mum especially. She wasn't meant to come home tonight so I
thought it was safe to bring you back here."

I frowned, not knowing what to say, I hugged him harder.

"Now lets get dressed and head over to your house."

We got dressed in silence and walked timidly out of his room. I kept
looking around as if I expected his mother to jump out of the darkness and
start shouting again. She didn't. She was waiting for us in the living
room.

"How dare you shut the door in my face! I'm your mother, you'll do as I
say!" Aaron just shook his head sadly. "Mum, I'm not going to have this
conversation with you again. I'll talk to you tomorrow."

We left his spluttering mother and jumped in the car. Aaron was silent most
of the drive. Unsure I reached for his hand.

He squeezed it and smiled. "I love you."

"I love you too." Woah. Did I mean to say that? I thought about then
smiled. I meant it.

Aaron smiled with a lot more warmth. "Yeah?"

"Yeah."

It was approaching 11pm when we got to my house. The lights were still on
and mum looked surprised to see us.

"What are you guys doing back? I thought you were staying over at Aaron's
tonight?"

"Um, Aaron's mum came home. She kinda freaked out." I said a bit bluntly, I
looked at Aaron apologetically. He just shrugged.

"Are you ok Aaron?" mum stood up and hugged him. I saw Aaron's body tense
then almost collapse as he let himself be hugged. I heard a sob. I panicked
and reached or him but it was clear he needed to speak to mum.

"Um, I'm just going to the bathroom."

I left Aaron to my mum's care and wandered in the direction of the
bathroom. Where were Kurt and Liam? I opened my bedroom door to find two
boys snuggled up on the mattress.

"Oh!" I accidentally let out and both of them shot up and stared at me in
shock.

"Why are you back?" Liam asked.

"It's not what you think!" Kurt said at the same time.

I stared at them for a moment then shrugged, walked in and sat on my bed
facing them.

"Well what is it?" I asked curiously.

Kurt blushed. "Um. I went to bed early and I kinda had one of my
nightmares."

I winced, I knew what Kurt's nightmares were like. But they usually
followed something dramatic in his life. I wondered what brought this one
on. "Liam heard me. I was... kinda upset and he hugged me. We fell
asleep. Really that's all. I think hanging around with us gay boys he's
become a bit of a softy."

I just smiled. "You ok Kurt?"

I made a mental note to talk to him later and find out what caused this
one.

He nodded still looking worried. I smiled again and climbed onto the
mattress with them.

"I need a hug too." I said plaintively. At once I was incased in arms and
legs.

I giggled and Liam snorted. "You're such a girl."

"Ha! Look at you huggy bo buggy!"

Liam wrinkled his nose to let me know that was very lame. "And why do you
need a hug anyway?"

"I don't need one as much as Aaron does. He's with mum now. His mother came
home and sprung us naked in his bed. She really freaked out."

Kurt looked worried. "What happened?"

"Aaron told her he'd talk with her tomorrow. She demanded that I leave!
What a bitch. Poor Aaron."

Aaron came into the room awhile later to find us all snuggled together
talking. He stood at the door a moment and Liam and Kurt both held out
their arms and grinned at him. He laughed. It was clear he had been crying
and that made me feel all protective.

"Come on." I said.

He joined us on the now cramped mattress. Despite the fact that we were
half on the floor and there was a perfectly comfortable bed right next to
us, we all feel asleep on the mattress.

The next morning Aaron told me what mum and he had talked about. Mum had
offered to let him stay here but he had refused partly due to the fact that
the house was already quite full. The other reason was that he wanted to
face this. Talk to his parents and try to get them to understand. Mum
offered to talk to his parents. He thought that might be good.

Aaron left to deal with his parents and I sat down and chewed my
nails. Something was worrying me about the whole situation with aaron and
his parents that wasn't just cause his parents were arseholes. I ignored it
and searched out Kurt. It was time I spent awhile with him.

Kurt was in the backyard with mum, Liam and one of mum's friends who was
looking over the possibility of a granny flat.

"Its going to mean the backyard is really small. The granny flat itself
wont be a self contained unit. All you'll have room for would be a bedroom
and a small bathroom." The guy was buff but older than mum so I struck him
off my perv list immediately.

Mum nodded and they started estimating costs. Liam seemed interested,
probably because it was going to be his bedroom the lucky bastard but I
could tell Kurt was vaguing out.

I tapped him on the shoulder and got him to follow me inside. I went
through to my room lay down on the bed and patted a spot next to me. Kurt
raised an eyebrow but followed anyway.

"What?"

I just shrugged. "Nothing really. Just want to hang out. we don't really
get to much."

Kurt smiled and lay down. "So did you guys do it?"

I rolled my eyes. "Do fish shit in the water? We were home alone...well for
awhile."

Kurt frowned. "Yeah. Hope Aaron's ok."

"So. I want to know whats been happening with you. Starting with why you
had a nightmare." I said bluntly. I was never one for subtlety.

Kurt looked sad and I instantly shuffled closer. "What happened?"

"I went by my house a couple of days ago. You would think they would notice
I was gone but some guys living there with mum and dad hasn't been back for
weeks. Mum looks bad Matt. Worse than last time. She was off her nut when I
got there, hardly even noticed I had entered the room." A tear slid down
Kurt's cheek.

I winced and moved closer again. Fuck, in all my little loved up world I
had forgotton the realities of Kurt's. "Shit Kurt. Do you want to get in
contact with your dad?"

Kurt shrugged. "I don't think so. Matt what am I going to do? My parents
are fucked up. They don't give a flying fuck about me."

I frowned. "Well they don't deserve you as a son. Besides they might not
care but I do. Mum does. Liam does. Aaron does. We'll be your family."

Kurt hugged me hard. "I know. I don't know what I would do without
you. Everything will be ok." I knew he didn't believe it.

"Even if its not, we'll all be there to pick up the pieces."
