CHAPTER 5 - Gossips

While they were lying down and embracing, Enzo was recalling the words
that Ruggiero whispered to him while he was taking him and wondered if
the young man really meant them. He would have liked to ask him, but he
was afraid that Ruggiero would say yes simply because he didn't want to
make him feel bad, therefore, although he had a great desire to know, he
didn't say anything. He thought that he would know sooner or later
whether those words had any meaning. Certainly, when he heard them, he
felt deeply moved.

Ruggiero was caressing him sweetly, in silence, immersed in his own
thoughts. Enzo would have given an eye to know what he was thinking.
Then he thought with regret that he had to go back home. He gently freed
himself from the young man's embrace and picked up his clothes.

"You have to go?" Ruggiero said with a sad voice.

"Yes, it will be better if I go now," Enzo said, starting to dress.

Ruggiero took his own clothes and also dressed. It took him more time
than the boy, who only had to put on his breeches and shirt. Enzo sat,
watched him and thought that it was a shame to hide such a beautiful
body under those clothes.

Ruggiero opened the gate. Just before going out, he embraced the boy,
who was holding on to him and shuddering. Then the young man tenderly
took Enzo's face between his hands, as if to outline it, looked at it
with his sparkling eyes in the thick half-darkness of the place, and
lowered his face near that of the boy. Enzo looked at him in
fascination, and although he couldn't guess what was about to happen,
felt it had to be something special. He waited, quivering. Ruggiero's
lips leaned warmly, sweetly, and delicately on Enzo's, parted and
started to suckle the lower lip of the boy. His tongue lapped and parted
Enzo's lips, and the boy shuddered. He parted his teeth and
instinctively pushed out his tongue, which the young man at once started
to suckle. Enzo felt breathless -- these were new and unknown, yet
intense and wonderful sensations.

He thought that being kissed in that way was as sensual and intimate as
being taken and wondered what one would feel if he was taken and kissed
in that way at the same time.

He clung to the young man so he would not fall down, as he felt that his
legs were surrendering. Their bodies shuddered and their excitations
arose strongly again, and they both felt them.

"Take me upstairs again, please..."

"Isn't it late?" Ruggiero asked, wrapping his arm around Enzo's waist
and lifting him off the ground floor.

"I don't care. Take me upstairs, take me upstairs and take me again!"

"With joy!" Ruggiero said, and took Enzo to the little room again,
holding Enzo tightly in his arms.

He laid him on the sacks and undressed him again.

"Can you take me and kiss me at the same time?" the boy asked with a
stirred voice, filled with hope.

"Yes, sure."

"Then please do," the boy murmured with emotion, while Ruggiero, freeing
himself from his clothes, climbed on top of him.

When at last they lay down sated, the boy said with a trembling voice,
"You will make me die, sir, in this way."

"You will make me die! I never felt what I'm feeling for you, never, for
nobody."

"What do you feel for me?" the boy asked in a low voice, waiting for the
answer, holding his breath.

"Love..." the young man sighed, looking with passionate eyes at the boy
lying underneath him.

"Love?" Enzo murmured.

"Yes."

"Aren't you joking, sir?"

"Joking? Why would I be joking?"

"Because... it is too beautiful to be true," the boy murmured and tears
were running down his cheeks.

"Why those tears?" the young man asked, trying to wipe them with his
fingertips.

"Because we have to keep this a secret, because we can't live it in the
sunlight. Because now each moment I spend away from you will be a burden
to me. You shouldn't have told me, it would have been better."

"You sure?"

"No..." the boy moaned, pressing himself against the young man.

Ruggiero kissed him again, and Enzo returned the kiss with sheer
passion.

"What can we do, now? Don't you understand that if they see us together
they would know about us? My eyes wouldn't be able to hide it."

"And then we will have to."

"But how?

"I don't want to lose you."

"Me neither, you know it."

"Therefore we have to hide our love, to protect it, protect it from
everybody and everything."

"Would we be able to?"

"We have to," the young man answered seriously.

When they parted at the crossroad, Enzo almost felt pain. He went back
home and found his father sitting outside of the house door.

When the man saw his son, he stood up, and asked him without harshness,
but with clear worry, "Where did you go?"

"To the cemetery," the boy quickly answered, having anticipated the
question.

"At this time?" the man asked, looking at him in his eyes.

"At this time."

"To your mother?" the man asked, trying to understand.

"It was shut."

"Sure, at this time. You didn't know that?" his father said, them added,
"Are you sad? Do you miss her?"

"I don't know," the boy answered.

He felt bad for lying in that way to his father, but there was nothing
else that he could do.

"Let's go to bed now. You know you have to get up early," the man said,
heading inside.

"You didn't have to wait for me," the boy said, stopping at the door to
his room and turning towards the man who held the candle in his hand.

"I was worried. When I come back home, you are always in your bed. And
won't it be better if you go to the cemetery during the day time, if you
feel like going there?"

"Possibly."

"Well then, good night, Enzo."

"Night, dad," the boy said, entering his room.

He lay on his bed. He could not fall asleep, and certainly not because
of the hot weather. He was literally upset. Ruggiero told him that he
loved him and Enzo knew he was not lying, because he was also in love
with Ruggiero and this made him recognize the love of the young man,
more than any words could convey. And this love scared him. And yet, he
knew from the beginning that it would be more than just sex with the
corporal, even though he was a total a newcomer in both the world of sex
and the world of love.

If he did fall in love with a girl, he could talk about that with his
father and in any case he wouldn't have to keep it a secret. But he was
in love with a man, a male, Ruggiero! If he was one of his mates, one of
his age, it would probably be simpler, but... And they could not even
meet at night, near the Cemetery, now that his father saw him coming
back from there. The man would become suspicious if he repeated his
nightly visits. It had been lucky that his father didn't doubt his
explanation, and he didn't read from his eyes that something special had
just changed his life. This was possibly what amazed him more. They had
to protect their love from everything and everybody, Ruggiero told him.
Would they succeed in doing that? The boy asked himself while at last
his eyelids were becoming heavy, and slowly Enzo fell asleep.

He passed a restless night, waking up often, and when he went to the
square the following morning, he felt his head was heavy, he felt dazed.
He waited for Ruggiero, for his Ruggiero. When he saw him coming up
towards the square, he suddenly felt the strength in him, as if he had
had a restful night.

Ruggiero stopped in front of him for a moment and said, "Come." His eyes
lit up as like if this word was implying something completely different,
but then he walked past him like on every morning, to choose the other
farmhands.

All morning long, Enzo immersed himself in his work, trying not to let
himself be tempted to continuously search for the corporal with his
eyes. Differently from the other mornings, Ruggiero never passed near
him, and Enzo thought that he had been wise to do that. And finally the
lunch break came.

As soon as Ruggiero sat near him, Enzo told him about the short talk he
had with his father the previous night. "Therefore I won't be able to
come tonight," he concluded.

"I understand. I'll miss you."

"I will too, sir," the boy said without looking at him in his eyes.

"But I want to meet you again."

"Me too, but we have to find another way."

"I'll think about it. But you too think about it."

"You don't need to tell me that."

"But why me?" after a short silence, Enzo asked.

"Because you stole my soul and my heart. Because I waited for you for
years and years and finally I found you. Because I need you," the young
man said in one breath, with a low but warm voice.

"You need me?" the boy murmured, feeling the pleasure that these words
had brought him. Then, with practical sense, he added, "but we can't
meet tonight."

"Sadly," Ruggiero answered.

The boy would have liked if the young man insisted, although he
understood that he didn't only because he accepted his decision, because
he understood that it was better not to expose themselves to risks that
could part them forever.

"But I would think of you, sir, tonight," Enzo said, looking at him.

Ruggiero smiled, "Only tonight?" he asked with a sweet tone.

"Mainly tonight, because I can't have you near me as I would like, sir."

"But you, do you love me?" the young man asked.

"Do you think it would be possible for me not to love you?"

"But I would like hearing you to say it."

"I love you, sir, of course!"

A man was approaching and they resumed eating without looking at each
other. The man told the corporal that the master wanted to meet him.
Ruggiero stood up, threw a rapid glance to the boy and went away. Enzo
finished eating, and without waiting for the end of the break signal,
went towards his work place.

Another farmhand, asked him on his way to work, "What do you and the
corporal tell each other?"

Enzo looked at him, knitting his eyebrows and asked, "Why?"

"He always comes to eat near you. And you talk."

"Maybe he likes that tree."

"And what do you talk about?" the other insisted.

"You just have to come and sit under that tree too, tomorrow, if both of
us still get to come here," the boy answered, turning to pick up his
basket and heading towards his line of trees when the end of the break
signal sounded.

When Ruggiero paid him that evening, he said with a quiet tone, "From
tomorrow, you come here directly. The master has decided to hire you as
a regular."

"Thank you," the boy said, feeling exultant, not really because being
hired as a regular meant economic stability, but because this way, he
would be sure that he could continue to see his corporal everyday.
Ruggiero continued to pay the other farmhands and Enzo went home, happy.

When he told his father he had been hired as a regular, the man was
happy. During supper, his father was particularly chatty and Enzo was
pleased to see how happy the man was about the news.

"The corporal... he must have recommended you," his father said at a
certain point.

"It means that he is happy with my work," the boy answered defensively.

"Sure, that's evident. You are a good worker. Don Calogero gains to have
you as a regular," the man said proudly.

When his father went to the tavern, Enzo went to the belvedere as usual.
Alduzzo brought with him his cousin, who was visiting with his family.
He was a wiry boy, with a likeable expression, and his name was
Salvatore. He came from Aci Catena and he had the look of a city-boy.
The others came in drabs and dribbles. They had so many questions for
the newcomer, who was evidently happy being the center of everyone's
attention, and consequently Alduzzo was proud to be his cousin.

When the ten o'clock chimes sounded, Ranuccio and Cesare left.

They were just gone when Rosario said with an artful expression, "It's
been a while that those two became inseparable, didn't you notice?"

"Well, what's odd with that? They are cousins and live close to each
other," Martino said.

Luigi burst into laughter and asked Rosario, "Inseparable, or joined by
their dicks?" and gestured the movement of fucking with his finger.

Everybody laughed but Alduzzo said, "That's bullshit, Luigi! Cesare
always talks about females!"

"Eh, don't you know that it's easier said than done?" Luigi cunningly
answered.

Salvatore intervened, "but those two were looking at each other in a
way... I think Luigi could be right.!"

"And in my opinion, Ranuccio takes it up the ass and Cesare gives it to
him," Rosario added.

"And even if it is true, what does it matter to us anyway?" Enzo
intervened, tense.

"Well, Ranuccio could be a faggot... I already thought so," Manuele
noted.

"Stop bullshitting!" Alduzzo repeated, then said, "as Enzo said, anyway,
it is none of our business."

Salvatore continued, "Where I live there is a boy that likes sucking
dicks, anybody's. And he is also skilled. Faggots can suck dick a lot
better than girls."

"I would let Ranuccio suck mine!" Luigi said merrily.

"You are gossiping about our friends behind their backs," Alduzzo said,
annoyed.

"I'll bet my balls. Next time I'll try to follow them without letting
them seeing me, so I can tell you if I'm right or not," Rosario
insisted.

Enzo felt more and more tense -- even if the others could not suspect
it, he felt ill at ease. But at the same time, the idea that two of his
mates could have a secret relationship like that of the corporal and
him, gave him a sense of pleasing amazement. If Rosario was right, there
were others like him. But if Rosario would spy on them and catch them,
what would happen then? He had to make sure that Rosario wouldn't
succeed, he had to warn them. But on the other hand, how? If there was
nothing between them, how would they react to his warnings? He could not
go to them and say, "If you two are faggots, beware that someone will
spy on you." They would surely be pissed off with him.

And if instead there was really something, it's very likely they would
deny it, especially Cesare, who always talked about women. Well, he
could perhaps try to warn Ranuccio. Enzo was torn, he could not decide
what's the best thing to do, but he clearly felt that he had to do
something. He felt a sense of solidarity towards the two mates. And that
made him aware that after all he also believed that they had had sex
with each other, he believed it or perhaps he hoped that they did.

His mates changed the subject, to Enzo's relief. After a while, he said
goodbye and went home. Along the way, he felt tempted to make a detour
towards their secret meeting place, but to do what? Who knows where and
when they could meet again. They certainly had to be cautious. Therefore
he decided to go quietly to his own home.

He became aware that he didn't tell his mates that don Calogero had
hired him as a regular. He would tell them the next day, he told
himself. Anyway they would understand it they did not see him on the
square the following morning, but find him already in the orangery.

He went to bed and asked himself if Ruggiero was thinking of him. They
had made love just twice, and yet to Enzo, it was like if they had done
it forever, and this night that they didn't meet, he felt lonely. He
desired to feel the young man's hands on his body while undressing him,
feeling his strong and hot body searching for his, feeling Ruggiero
entering inside him, filled with desire, and taking him with virile
tenderness, until he could placate in him the fever that consumed them.

He recalled how Ruggiero kissed him on the previous night while he was
taking him, filled with passion. He recalled the words of his mates, of
Salvatore -- fags suck it better than women... and he thought that
possibly Ruggiero would have liked to be sucked by him and promised to
himself to do it the very next time they could make love. Who knows what
sensations it would give him having the beautiful member of the young
man he loved between his lips, he wondered and smiled, pleased at the
image that took shape in his mind.

Although he was strongly aroused, Enzo didn't masturbate that night. He
limited himself to dream what he would do with Ruggiero, mentally
picturing his beloved and assuming the position to be penetrated,
offering himself to the young man in his fantasy, and murmuring his
name, full of love.

Then he stretched out, gradually relaxing, exhausted even more than if
he had really made love, until sleep overtook him, and pampered him with
his secret dreams.

On the next day, at work, he had no occasion to talk with Ruggiero in
private, since he had to go away in the mid morning. So, during the
lunch break, he went to look for Ranuccio, who came with the other
farmhands.

He found him sitting near two other farmhands. "You want to come and
chat with me?" Enzo proposed.

His mate asked him, "Why don't you sit with us?"

"Well, it's the same, but I..." Enzo hesitantly answered, but to his
relief, Ranuccio stood up and followed him.

They went to sit under the tree where he usually sat with Ruggiero.

"Ranuccio, do you promise me that if I tell you something, you'll not be
pissed off at me?"

"Tell me, what?"

"You have to promise."

"If I don't know what, how can I promise you?" the boy said jokingly,
then seeing the serious expression of his friend, he said, "All right, I
promise."

"See, Ranuccio, among our mates there is someone who says that between
you and Cesare there is not just friendship like among the rest us."

"What do you man?" the boy asked, frowning.

"It is not easy to say, but lately you two are always together, and..."

"So then?" the other asked with a slightly combative tone.

"It is none of my business, but I wanted you to know that someone thinks
evil of you two and... and that he wants to spy on you... So I though
it's better to warn you, to be careful..."

"Careful? About what?"

Enzo was ill at ease, "They could misunderstand and, you know, then
gossip would start and... It's none of my business, but I would regret
it if they mocked you for nothing, and..."

"And who said that between my cousin and me... who?"

"Well, I don't like to be a gossip, but more than one had said..."

"And you believed it?"

"No..."

"So, then, why did you come to warn me?"

"Well, you know, I thought that perhaps something you do could seem...
like if..." Enzo said, embarrassed.

"That's all you wanted to tell me?"

"Yes..."

"Well, I'll go back to the others," the boy said, stood up and left
without another word.

Enzo looked at him going away. Ranuccio didn't deny nor confirm that it
was true. But Enzo thought that possibly there was something true in
that rumor. He thought so, or rather, he felt so. In Ranuccio's shoes,
how would he have reacted? He wouldn't have admitted it, of course. And
probably he would not deny it either. But certainly, he understood it
well, in spite of his words, Ranuccio didn't know how much he could
trust Enzo, and therefore he said nothing. Yes, probably he would have
reacted in the same way.

But is was a shame -- if both of them had the same kind of secret to
hide, wouldn't it have been beautiful to be able to talk about it
together freely, like friends talk about their adventures, dreams,
desires? Having somebody to open up to, wouldn't it be beautiful? Enzo
asked himself with some regret. On the other hand, he said noting to
Ranuccio about Ruggiero and himself, therefore how could he expect that
his companion, admittedly there was really something, would open up to
him?

He thought that it was really a shame. Then he thought that the real
problem was not so much the fact that one couldn't talk about it with
somebody like him, but he simply could not talk about it, not with his
father, or his friends, nor could he live his relationship in the
sunlight. How many more, like him, had to live their love in secret, and
in fear of being caught, being mocked, being pointed at and avoided like
disease? Like the Carini Princess about whom the storytellers sang. But
he didn't want his love to have such a tragic ending. Ruggiero and him
would protect their love from everything and everybody, as the young man
told him.

Love.

A few days ago, to him this was just a word that didn't concern him, as
real as America -- everybody knew it existed, everybody talked about it,
but only because they heard about it from those lucky people who went
there. Yes, he found his own "America" and felt rich. But he, even
though now he knew what the word "love" really meant, couldn't talk
about it with anybody. But how is it possible having a tertian ague and
not letting anybody know?

A few days passed when Enzo could only talk with Ruggiero for a few
minutes during the break. Both were feeling the desire of the other in
each glance, in each gesture, but didn't know how to get together. And
the mutual desires were increasing day after day. Ruggiero insisted that
Enzo go to the old oil mill with him again, but the boy, afraid that his
father or his mates could suspect something, preferred not to risk it,
although he too felt a stronger and stronger desire.

He didn't want to risk all their future for one more time together. Even
if at times he thought continuing in that way and not being able to meet
didn't have such a great future. Maybe if they both thought about it
continuously, eventually they could find a way to safely meet, or at
least without excessive risk.

The most that they did was when Ruggiero asked him to help him to move
some crates in the warehouse. Taking advantage of the fact that they
were alone and nobody could see them, they embraced and kissed for a few
minutes, brushing their bodies against each other, until they felt each
other's erections, signaling the intensity of their mutual desire.

Ruggiero caressed his butt, holding Enzo tightly against himself, and
Enzo sighed, "Do you want me, sir?"

"Sure I want you. And you?"

"Can't you feel?"

"Do you still feel pain?"

"No, no more. It has been too many days since the last time. When will
you put it in me again? When will you make me yours again?"

"Why don't you come to the crossroad tonight?"

"It's risky, you know it. If I were a woman, would you marry me?"

"No, I wouldn't be interested in you, you know that," the young man
answered with a sweet smile, caressing Enzo's erection through the
fabric of his breeches.

"But what if it was possible to marry another man?" the boy insisted.

"I would marry you in a heartbeat."

"And would you be jealous because of me?"

"I'm already."

"You don't have any reason to, sir. I'll never cheat on you. But what
about you?"

"Me neither, Enzo, because I love you, you know it. For me, only you
exist now."

"But we are never going to be able to make love. If we lived together,
we could make love every night..." the boy said with a dreamy voice.

"And not only at night..." Ruggiero answered and kissed him again
deeply, before parting to resume their work.
