Adrian was dreaming, he dreamt that he was lying down and cold rain was
pouring down on him. His surroundings were black and he was lying on what
seemed to be nothing. He was couching and couldn't stop, then suddenly
warmness came over him and he felt a hand on his back. The rain stopped and
he felt a hand on his back start to rub it. Adrian knew immediately that it
was Billy, the surroundings changed and he was lying on warm grass on a
sunny day. Billy was still rubbing his back lying down beside him.

Billy woke up to the sounds of his mother coming home from work; he looked
over to the clock and saw that it was one thirty. He then looked over at
Adrian he was still asleep, still looked pale but not as tired as before.

Billy slowly sat up then stood and walked out of the room. Down stairs he
found his mother sitting at the kitchen table looking just as bad as
Adrian. Billy knew it wasn't for the same reason; his mother looked like
Adrian did because of stress, tiredness, and dealing with their dad.

Her brown hair was messy and knotted, her hazel eyes just like Billy's were
bloodshot and tired, and her hands were tangled in her hair.

"Hey mom" Billy said with caution sitting down next to her.

She looked at him with a forced smile "oh hello, why are you up so late?"

"It's not late, only one thirty. I woke up when you came in; I was lying
down with Adrian. He's not feeling very well, sweating a lot, coughing in
his sleep. He's also very pale" Billy finished with a stern look at his
mother.

"Hmp, probably just the flue." She said "nothing you can't handle"

"Yea that's what I figured, just thought I'd tell you since you're his
mother" Billy spat out.

She acted as if she did not hear him and said "I'll be working late at the
bar for the next two weeks, so you will have to handle it. He'll pull
through he always does"

Billy didn't argue his mother didn't realize how fragile Adrian could be
sometimes. Little things like the flue or a cough could turn really bad
really fast with Adrian.

Ever since Adrian was small he had been like that, Billy's mother chose to
ignore it. Saying `he just gets the worst of things'. Billy didn't know
what it was but he did not ignore it. He always took care of Adrian when
his mother couldn't, because of work or she just didn't care.

"Well I'm beat, I'm going to bed. I have to be at the restaurant early
tomorrow so you will have to get Adrian up. Oh and could you do some
grocery shopping?" She said getting some water from the fridge.

"Yea sure" Billy said

"Ok, you know what we need" she said approaching the stairs "and don't
forget you have to make sure your brother gets to school"

"I never do" he said as his mother walked up the stairs then he added "I'm
about the only one who does ever remember Adrian" his mother didn't hear
him.

Billy sighed then stood up, and went back upstairs. As he passed his
mothers room could smell cigarette smoke drifting through the crack in her
doorway. Billy had asked her not to smoke in bed but she never listened.

When Billy got to his room he found Adrian still sleeping, muttering and
sweating. Billy didn't know what he could do besides hope that Adrian would
be better in the morning; he decided that he would call the health nurse at
the local free clinic in town the next day.

`For now I'll just have to keep him hydrated' Billy thought to
himself. Going into the bathroom he took a cloth off the shelf and wet it
with cool water. He wrung it out and took it back to the bedroom.

"Here we are" he said wiping at Adrian's face and forehead.

Adrian stopped muttering and looked a little more comfortable. Billy smiled
he looked calm and peaceful, the sight made him think of when Adrian was
little and Billy doing the same thing. Making sure Adrian was alright,
holding a cloth to his head. He had only been seven and Adrian three, but
Billy knew what to do him always did.

`Now twelve years later I'm in the same position' Billy thought. `Except
I'm nineteen and he's seventeen. I should be getting ready for college. Mom
should be sitting here holding the cloth, looking after Adrian not me'

Billy was jerked out of his thoughts by Adrian moaning as he sat up. "Oh
man I think I'm gonna puke"

"Shit" Billy swore, and then jumping up into action mode he got up and
helped Adrian walked over to the bathroom. "Ok just one sec"

He just barely moved out of the way as Adrian started to blow chunks in the
"general" direction of the toilet. Billy stood at the doorway watching him
convulse. A minute went by and it seemed like there was no more, Adrian got
up and walked shakily over to Billy who took his arm and lead him over to
the bed.

"You lie down, I gotta go clean up" Billy said gently once Adrian was on
the bed.

"Sorry" Adrian feverishly whimpered

"No don't be sorry it's ok" Bill said as he ruffled Adrian hair then went
into the bathroom to clean up.
