Chapter 20 -- Revelations and Shopping

We were just about finished eating when Bobby asked, "Kyle, where is
Mr. Horner? Is he non-verbally communicating from home?"

"No, actually he left this morning for Denver to find a place for us to
live when we move to Denver in May. He is also delivering my acceptance of
the grant from the University graduate department that will permit me to go
to graduate school and not have to work full time." Kyle said.

Mrs. Lincoln asked, "What are you going to study?"

"I'm going into counseling. I want to be able to help children who have
been sexually molested." Kyle said.

I looked at both Denny and Beau and they were sort of frozen. Bobby asked,
"Why do you want to do that?"

Kyle looked around and said, "When I was 10, I was molested by a neighbor.
It went on for about a year, when one day he had a friend over. When the
two of them wanted my attention at the same time, I ran home naked. When
my mother saw me she made me tell her what happened. She called the police
and the two men were arrested, but I felt like it was my fault."

"After I was examined by a doctor, my parents took me to a psychologist who
helped me get through the ordeal and made me understand that I had done
nothing wrong and that I was, in fact, the victim."

Both Beau and Denny looked like they were hyperventilating. Jeff noticed
also and we got up and took the two guys out. Kyle followed and when we
got to the front of the restaurant, Kyle took us into a conference room.
Kyle said, "I guess I said too much, maybe."

"No, Kyle, you just hit a nerve with our two young friends. "I assured him.

Jeff said, "I want you two 13 year olds to go the bathroom, and get
yourselves together and come back, and you can tell the others you must
have eaten too much."

Jeff, Kyle and I walked back to the table. I said, "The other two will be
back shortly."

Everyone was finishing eating when the two guys came back. Beau said,
"Sorry, people. I guess it was something we ate."

"Probably the calamari." said Teddy. "No one else was eating squid or
octopus."

Spencer spoke up and said, "General Beauregard was probably nervous,
thinking about power shopping. Believe you me, you are about to be swept
away by a tornado." He stopped and then said, "I can't believe I said
that. I'm sorry."

Jeff went to Spencer and said, "Let's go visit for a minute."

They left and when they retuned Spencer announced, "I think we should be
leaving, if we are going to make the movie."

Mr. Lincoln looked at his watch and said, "Spencer, you are absolutely
correct. Kyle would you please bring me the check?"

"Sir, I have prepared two checks." Kyle said, as he handed one to
Mr. Lincoln and the other to Ben.

"Good, then Beau will leave the gratuity." said Jeff. "Spencer, what are
your recommendations today."

Spencer meditated and then said, "Since everyone saw how Kyle embarrassed
me today, when I accidentally on purpose dropped my napkin. He not only
handed me another one but put another one at my place, and said, `Just in
case you have another accident, sir.' I'm probably so wounded emotionally
and will never recover. I guess a nickel at max and Jacob should get four
of the five cents."

Everyone started to laugh, and Kyle said, "I'm so sorry sir. I promise
I'll try not to embarrass you next time."

Spencer jumped up and went to Kyle and pulled Kyle's face down and kissed
him on the cheek and said, "Thanks for the great service. You be good,
okay."

The Lincoln party left, and Jeff handed Beau some bills and whispered,
"Give these to Jake and these to Kyle."

Josh said, "Kyle, I think you know who I am, and what I do don't you? I
also think that you live relatively near to Norfolk and I think your last
name might be Lowery."

"Yes, guilty on all charges. In fact, Joe is coming back on Thursday and
then on Friday we are going to Beemer for my twin nephews' birthday party
on Friday night. We're both taking the weekend off and coming back to
Omaha on Sunday." Kyle answered.

"Good, then you can come to a birthday party in Fremont on Saturday for the
four guys who just left, plus a four year old. Their birthdays are all
this week." said Beau.

"I will have to check with Joe, but it sounds like it might be fun." Kyle
said.

"Dad, you take Uncle Josh, Uncle Ben, Michael and Chris to the bathroom and
get ready for some power shopping."

Mickey said, "I know when we are being told to disappear."

Kyle. Jeff, Beau and Denny talked and exchanged phone numbers, and they
were standing waiting for us when we came out. Denny put his hands on his
hips and asked, "What in the world was going in there that took so long?"

Beau and Denny high fived.

Mickey said, "Too bad you'll never know." Chris and Mickey high fived.

We departed for the Oak View mall and did some major damage to Josh's
credit card. Beau had made sure he even got a pair of pajamas. We left
Penney's and went to the shoe store and got several more pairs of shoes for
Beau.

Jeff said, "Okay, you young teens, we'll take these things to the van you
see if you can find anything else the General needs. We'll meet you in the
men's department at Dilliards in 30 minutes."

The guys went to the food court and got a drink and were sitting there
talking when Chris said, "That guy has been eyeing us and moving closer.
I'll take care of that." Chris pulled out a cell phone and pretended to
press some buttons. "Hey Dad, some guy in a maroon jacket looks like he is
going to make a move on us. We're in the food court in front of the Runza
booth ^Å You'll be here in to two minutes, Great."

The guy had disappeared and Mickey said, "Your father is not even here."

"Yeah, you're right, and this phone doesn't work either." Chris said. The
four guys almost fell out of their chairs.

They started to walk toward Dillard's when Mickey said, "Guys, I think
we're being followed. I'll handle this one. Hey Dad, there is a man in a
black leather jacket, a red shirt and jeans following us."

The guy turned and was high tailing it the opposite direction. "Guys, can
we find Jeff and the others. I don't like the feeling here?" asked Beau.

The guys hooked up with us, and went to the van. We crawled in and Ben,
said, "We're going to the sports store to look at the bicycles. That's
what we are going to give the guys for their birthdays."

We walked through the store and looked at the bicycles. Chris looked at
the prices and said, "Uncle Josh and Uncle Ben, we have a bicycle shop in
Fremont. Mr. Reynolds will give you a much better deal, and he will
assemble and deliver them."

"Yeah, I'll call Uncle Larry and tell him to charge you double and then
I'll help him deliver the bikes for $15.00 each." laughed Denny.

"Is your Uncle's wife named Lindsey?" asked Josh.

"Yes, except we call her Aunt Lindy." Denny answered.

Josh started to laugh. "How funny is this? I was the best man at their
wedding."

"Oh, in that case, the price just tripled." said Denny.

As we were walking out by the skateboards, Mickey announced, "The four of
us guys and Georgia are going to get the guys skateboards."

Beau responded immediately and said, "So this is going to be the birthday
of wheels? You do know that all I have is $28.00."

"No sweat." said Denny. "All I have is $8.00. We'll rob a bank and then we
can buy them five Lexus convertibles."

We got to the car and we were starting home, when Beau saw the Barnes and
Noble, "Can we please stop there?"

"Yes, certainly." said Ben.

As we were going into the store, Beau asked, "Jeff, what books are you
going to be reading for your class? I want my own copy, so we can read
them at the same time and then we can discuss them before you go to school
and then I'll listen to what they say on your tapes."

Jeff told him the four books, and Ben said, "You guys get what you want,
then meet us in the coffee shop."

As we were drinking our drinks, Jeff, out of the clear blue, asked, "Uncle
Josh, you know how to administer an I. Q. test right?"

Josh looked at him funny and said, "I know how to do it, but I'm not very
proficient at it."

"That's close enough for now, and if the results show what I think they
will, we will decide what to do next. Also, I want Beau to have a
placement test, to find out what his academics skills are, and what his
weak areas might be. They can do that at the school. Can anyone take care
of it?

"I'll take that one and make the arrangements." said Ben.

The guys came back with two copies of each book in paperback and Beau had
two children's books and asked, "Jeff, may I borrow some money?" Beau
asked.

Josh handed him a card and said, "Here, son, use this."

Ben handed him his Barnes and Noble card and said, "Make sure you show this
to the clerk and you will save an extra 10%."

The guys went to the checkout area and returned quickly. When Beau handed
Ben his card, he hugged him and said, "Thanks Uncle Ben."

"You are welcome sir." said Ben.

Beau did the same to Josh who answered, "Anytime son."

Mickey gave me the funniest look as if to say, "What was that all about?"

As we were walking to the car, Beau fell back to Jeff and me. We stopped
and he said, "Jeff and Doctor Dad, I feel like I need to tell the guys what
happened, so they don't think I am a complete weirdo."

I looked at him and said, "You do what you think would be best."

He climbed into the car and the guys started to laugh about what had
happened. When we got underway, Beau announced, "Guys, I have some things
I need to tell you. He proceeded to succinctly tell his story without any
interruptions."

"My heavens, and I thought I had it bad, but it was nothing compared to
what you experienced," said Denny. "I don't know if I am brave enough to
tell anyone about my experiences. I've never told anyone besides my
parents and my sister. My parents took me to a counselor, but I refused to
say anything to him. Dr. Wilson and Lash probably have some idea, but I
never told them anything. My parents asked them to check me for AIDS.

Suddenly he stopped and asked, "Beau, did they check you for AIDS yet?"

"I think so. They took so much blood during my physical; I thought Lash
was drinking it." Beau answered.

I interjected and said, "We're hoping the results will be back in the next
couple of days."

Editor's Notes:

Yes we certainly hope they will. The story is really getting exciting. I
certainly hope that the tests prove negative in terms of AIDS.

I wonder if anyone else has become as wrapped up in this story as I have? I
mean, I have let myself get truly worried about Beau's health condition. I
think that says a lot in terms of the feelings evoked by this story.
