It's What Brothers Do - 15

"What?" I had heard the words, but my mind couldn't seem to process it.

"I'm Pregnant!" Jessica said, and the single tear turned into many.

"But you said it was ok; I mean, we only did it one time!" I whined

Jess sobbed softly. Her body trembled.

"Come here," I whispered, and held out my arms.

Jess curled up against my chest and cried. I held her close, and tried to
ease the pain.

"We'll work it out." I stroked her hair and rubbed her back. "Do your folks
know?

"I tried to tell them a couple of times, but I never could."

"But didn't they notice?"

"I'm not showing much yet, and I've been wearing big sweaters."

My mind was racing. My heart was pounding. Actually I felt like I wanted to
throw up. "I'm too young to have a kid," I thought. "What about college?"
My stomach felt bad, real bad. "Jess, I need to go to the bathroom."

I gently eased her back and quickly ran upstairs. I made it there and
closed the door, just in time to feel my stomach turn. I got the lid up and
puked my supper. I coughed, and the nasty taste filled my mouth. That
caused another retch and more came up. I was trembling; my head was in a
whirl, and I thought I might faint. Then, I felt something lower down. I
quickly pulled at my jeans, just managing to sit on the can before I
shit. A two-second difference and I would have messed my pants.

After maybe ten minutes, my body calmed down and I was able to clean up. I
saw Jess's toothbrush, and reached for it. The toothpaste helped get the
puke taste out of my mouth. I rinsed, straightened up the room, and finally
headed back downstairs.

"Sorry," I mumbled, as I crawled back on the couch.

Jess curled into my arms again. "Were you sick?"

"Yes," I said, a little embarrassed.

"When I found out, I did too," she whispered. "Terri, she's on our Pep
squad, bought the test kit and helped me. I'm glad I wasn't alone."

"You must have been really scared."

"You have no idea!"

We were both silent for a few minutes.

"I'm gonna have the baby," Jess said quietly. "Don't even think about
anything else."

I nodded. Honestly nothing else had crossed my mind. "I want to marry you,"
I said gently, "I knew it on Valentine's Day."

Jess softly rubbed my chest. "I have to think about that. College is really
important to me."

Now I was confused. I finally managed to whisper, "OK"

We spent another hour in the basement talking it all through. We heard the
door upstairs open and close, and knew Jess' folks had returned. Like
prisoners condemned, we held hands and walked up the stairs together.

I won't go into all the details, but Jessica's Mom basically broke down in
tears; and the two of them sobbed, while her Dad got red in the face. He
held back what I imagined to be a rage he was unsure he could control. He
stared at me, and I knew he was wishing he could cut my nuts off. I shifted
uncomfortably in the chair.

In the end, I was told it would be best if I left. I looked at Jess and she
nodded as if to say, "It'll be alright."

When I got home, Momma was in her chair in the living room. It was late,
and it surprised me she was still up, but she had been enjoying reading
lately.

"Momma, we need to talk," I said softly, sitting in what used to be Daddy's
chair.

Momma smiled at me and set her book down. "Did ya'll have a nice time with
Jessica?"

"Yes, Momma" I said, knowing it was a lie. I wasn't ready to tell her, but
I knew I had to. I took a deep breath, "Momma, Jessica and I are gonna have
a baby."

Momma got a slightly puzzled look.

"Jess is pregnant."

Momma lowered her head a bit. She didn't say a word. It was as if she
hadn't heard what I had just said.

"Momma?"

"I heard you," she said softly, "I hoped you kids would have had more sense
than that."

I guess I was ready for anger, for yelling, or for a scolding. But Mommas'
disappointment hurt worse than anything else she could have done.

"I'm sorry, Momma," I whispered, tears filling my eyes.

It was quiet again.

"I never told you," Momma said gently. "You came a little early yourself."

I looked up and stared at Momma.

"Your Daddy was a pretty good talker when he wanted something." She smiled,
and turned her head and laughed gently.

I didn't know what to say. I sat in wonder.

Momma and I talked for a long time. I stopped being a kid that night; I
grew up fast.

"Just be careful how you tell your brother," Momma cautioned, just before I
headed up the stairs to bed.

"I will," I said softly, wondering, "What did she mean by that?"

Trevor was at the breakfast table when I came downstairs the next
morning. Momma gave me a look, and I nodded. It was time.

I sat down, "Trevor, there's something I need to tell you."

He turned toward me, curious.

"Trev, Jessica is going to have a baby."

Trevor had a mouth full of cereal; he stopped chewing, and blinked.

"It's mine," I whispered.

Trev swallowed. He glanced at Momma, who nodded as if to say, "It's all
true." He turned back to me and I nodded. He got a strange look on his
face, part confusion and part disbelief. Then, tears starting, he bolted
away from the table and ran up the stairs.

I looked up at Momma; she shot me a disapproving look. "I'll talk to him,"
I said quickly.

Momma's lips got tight, "You made this mess, and I expect you to clean it
up."

"Yes, Momma," I said softly, not sure exactly which mess she was talking
about.

Trevor was face down on his bed when I walked into his room. He was sobbing
and his cries were from deep down.

I sat on the bed and he rolled away from me. I rubbed his back, and he
pulled further away. He cried and cried. I didn't try to say anything.

After maybe fifteen minutes, he calmed himself.

"I'm sorry," I said softly.

Trev turned quickly toward me, his face streaked with tears. "You did it
with her? You only do that if you love someone." he sobbed.

"I know, I know," I said, rubbing his back. "I love Jess very much."

Trevor sobbed even more deeply this time; it was as if I had stabbed him.

"But I thought you loved me!"

"I do," I said quickly; "I love you both."

Trev turned away again. "Get out!" he yelled. "Get the fuck out!"

I didn't know what to say or do. I slowly got off the bed and headed for my
room.

"Don't ever come back!" Trev sobbed, as I closed the door behind me.

Trevor spent the rest of the day in his room. Momma went up to talk to him
a couple of times, but he wasn't ready to come out.

I spoke to Jess on the phone three times, and she said that her mom had
calmed down and they were working things out. I asked about her dad, and
she said I better not come near the place for a while.

"Remember, he's got a shotgun." Jess said, making a little attempt at
humor.

I managed a weak chuckle.

I spent Saturday night in my room, staring at the ceiling, wondering how
the hell this had happened. Suddenly, I remembered I had forgotten to do my
hours at the Community Center that morning. We were working on setting up a
neighborhood basketball tournament. I had promised Nate I'd be there. He
was especially looking forward to seeing me. I think he had been working on
a new skateboard move.

"Fuck!"

Now, not only had I let Trevor down, but Nate and the other kids too. I
felt worse than ever.

* * * *

Trevor stayed angry all day Sunday, and was cold to me on Monday
morning. He refused my offer of a ride to school, and took the bus.

Once Momma knew I was taking care of my responsibilities, offering to marry
Jess and all, she accepted the situation and was ready to move on. I knew
she was still disappointed, and certainly didn't approve of what we had
done, but I also knew I could trust her to support Jess and me, whatever
came next.

* * * *

By lunch time on Monday, I had gone over it again and again in my mind, and
was finally getting used to the idea that I was going to be a father. Jess
met me for lunch, and we talked a lot about her folks. I got the feeling
that now that some time had passed; even her dad was coming around a bit.

We still needed to talk, so we arranged to get together again that evening.

"You can't come over," Jess warned, "My Dad."

"We can't meet at my house either, Trevor is really upset." I sighed. "I'll
find a place."

One of my football buddies, Josh, had an older brother with an apartment on
the edge of town. I explained that I needed some time with Jess, and asked
if he could help me out. He raised an eyebrow, and laughed. At that point,
I didn't care what he thought was going to happen. He agreed to call his
brother. The two decided to take pity on me and planned to take in a movie
together. That would leave the apartment empty for a couple of hours.

"Perfect," I smiled, "I owe you one."

Josh grinned. "No problem," he laughed, "next time get some for me."

* * * *

Jess and I spent two hours talking through every option we had. College was
important to her and it was also important to me. We decided that no matter
what else, we needed to do that. When, where, and how, we left for later.

"If it comes down to choosing," I said, "I'll work and you'll go to
college. I won't let anything take that away from you."

We talked as if we were going to get married, but Jess hadn't really
decided yet. I guess it was too soon for her to agree to that. We held each
other, and I kissed her a couple of times, but nothing else
happened. Neither of us was in the mood.

* * * *

When I got home, Momma was out, a church meeting or something. I walked
passed Trevor's room, and saw a note in big letters on the door. "Do not
Enter." I thought about knocking, but then decided I was talked out after
my time with Jess. I got to my room, stripped, and went to bed early.

"Shit!" I said to myself; rolled over, hugged my pillow and hoped that
things would be better in the morning.

* * * *

When I got to school the next day, there was an odd buzz in the
hallway. There were looks, stares, and whispers. Call me paranoid, but I
couldn't help but think people were talking about me.

During my first period class, a kid came to the door and handed the teacher
a note. My name was called and, when I got to the front, the teacher said I
was wanted in the office.

"Fuck," I thought as I headed down the hall. I figured Jessica's friend
Terri must have told some of the girls on the Pep squad. The news wouldn't
take long to get around after that.

Ms. Harrison, the guidance counselor, met me at the door. "I'm guessing we
soon might have some things to discuss."

"Yes, ma'am," I whispered.

The principal said he had heard rumors and needed to know the truth. "A
young woman's reputation is at stake here," he said firmly, "I want to hear
it from you."

With Ms. Harrison looking on, I told him that Jess and I had been close and
even talked about marriage. When he asked point blank, I admitted, "Yes,
sir, we already started our family."

Ms. Harrison sighed softly. "Well, let's talk," she said, and nodded toward
her office. Since it was so near the end of the school year, I was about to
argue "it really wasn't any of their damn business." But, remembering how
helpful Ms. Harrison had been with my college application, I just quietly
followed her.

"Better have Jessica join you," The principal said to Ms. Harrison as we
left the room, Ms. Harrison nodded in agreement.

* * * *

Jess left school early that day. She couldn't take the stares and the
whispers. I called her, and we talked a long time. In the end, she
agreed. "Fuck'em!" Well those were my words, but she agreed.

* * * *

I couldn't take Trevor's silence. Momma offered to intervene, but I firmly
asked her to let me take care of things. "It's my problem."

I pounded on Trev's door until he didn't want to hear it anymore, and
opened it.

"Trev, we're brothers," I pleaded. "We can't be like this. It's not what
brothers do."

Trev gave me an icy cold stare, "You're not my brother any more."

He closed the door in my face, and I heard a click as he locked it.
