Lance

Chapter 3

There was an acquaintance of mine in school named Alex, I had a feeling
that he sought me out at lunch time; he was pleasant but also very
quiet. Although
he was very handsome with strawberry blond hair and the greenest eyes I've
ever seen, plus a beautiful swimmers body, there was something sad about
him. I think it was his eyes, they were very large and appeared to look
into your soul, but there was something wrong I just couldn't quite put my
finger on what it was.

On Wednesday the following week just as lunch was ending and after Alex and
left for class that Coach Randal sat down beside me. It was kind of a
surprise since I wasn't on the swim team, but he had a friendly smile as he
greeted me.

"Hi Lance, how's life treating you?"

"No complaints from me coach, what's up"

Coach laughed a bit before saying, "You get right to the point don't you?"

Smiling back at him I said, "Well you obviously sat down here for a reason
other than swimming since I'm not on the team."

"Yes, you're right Lance; I've noticed Alex sit with you several times at
lunch. I was wondering if you two were close. You're the only student
I've ever seen him with; he's kind of a loner."

"Actually we're not close at all, I couldn't even tell you his last name. He
mostly just sits with me and says very little, we talk some about our
classes that's all. Is there some kind of a problem?"

"I think there may be Lance. Alex came in and quit the team today, there
was such sadness in his eyes that it got to me, I don't believe he really
wanted to. Lance, on several occasions Alex has come to class with bruises
on his body, bad bruises, very painful bruises, when I ask about them he
always has an excuse like he fell, or bumped into something when he wasn't
looking where he was going."

"And I'm thinking you feel those aren't accidental bruises."

"Lance, you're as perceptive as your dad. Yes, that's exactly my point. Alex
either has to be the clumsiest kid alive or someone is using him for a
punching bag. The bruises are always hidden by his clothing, I'm the only
one other that members of the swim team that see them, and now he's quit
the team and I more worried than ever."

"Have you spoken to his parents about it?"

"He lives with his dad, his parents are divorced, and yes, I have tried to
speak to Mr. Miller about Alex, and if looks could kill, I'd be dead. The
man looked me in the eye and told me to fuck off and mind my own business. I
was hoping I could get you to become friendly with Alex and see if he'd
spill the beans on what's happening to him. I think it might be easier for
him to confide in a friend."

"I'll give it a try coach Randal, but I can't make any promises, he may be
too afraid to come out with what's happening to him with anyone, friend or
not."

"Thanks Lance, that's all I can ask, I really appreciate any help I can get
I want to get to the bottom of this before he's hurt any worse than he
already is."

I gave this a lot of thought, considering Alex's dad reaction to coach
Randal asking about his son, I knew I had to tread carefully. I'll try to
get Alex to loosen up more at lunch and make him feel more comfortable
being around me.

A week went by and Alex appeared to become more at ease the more we talked;
he even smiled a couple of times. He really was a handsome guy. On
Thursday at lunch I mentioned to Alex that Dad and I played cards with a
friend and we really could use a forth. I was hoping he could join us.

This was the first time I actually saw real happiness in his eyes, but it
disappeared quickly as Alex said, "Lance I'd like to but I doubt my dad
would let me, he usually has things for me to do at home."

I suggested he ask his dad and he could let me know Friday. I decided to
tell dad about what was taking place with Alex, starting with coach
Randal's approaching me with his concerns.

After dad hear my story, he sat quietly for a few minutes before saying
he'd get in touch with Mr. Miller in the morning and have a chat with him
about Alex coming over Friday.

"Whoa, dad, I'm not sure that would be a good idea considering what
happened to coach Randal when he made an attempt to talk to him."

"Trust me on this one son, I'll guarantee you Alex will be here Friday, and
there hadn't better be any marks on him."

"The coach said you can't see the bruises they're always covered by Alex's
clothing."

"They won't be concealed when we get Alex in the pool. Now don't worry
about it, I promise I'll take care of it."

I hugged dad and told him I didn't know what he had up his sleeve but I
trusted him completely. Friday came and Alex approached me at lunch with a
smile that went from ear to ear. I don't know what dad did or said to Mr.
Miller, but whatever it was worked.

"Lance, I asked my dad about coming over to your house and he said he
thought it was a great idea. What time should I be there?"

"Why not ride back with dad and I after school, then we can run you home
later."

"Really, Lance; I'm so excited I feel like I could explode."

Laughing at Alex's excitement I said, "Don't do that at least until after
with beat dad and Uncle Thomas at cards."

"You're uncle is going to be there too?"

"He's not really my uncle, he's a friend of ours, he works for Sky Lab
selling houses, and his name is Thomas."

"Oh yeah, I met him once, he's the guy who sold us our house. He seemed
like a really nice man."

"You'll love him Alex; he really is a very special guy."

Alex and I waited for dad in Sky Lab's reception area. As soon as dad came
in we hugged each other before he shook hands with Alex.

"You must be Alex, nice to meet you; shall we head for home, and get the
BBQ started?"

Dad put his arms around Alex's and my waist and we headed for the car. I
noticed dad pulled Alex close into a kind of sideways hug. Alex was
looking at dad with pure awe.

"Glad you could make it for the game Alex; we need a 4th to make it more
challenging. Of course Thomas and I will go easy on you guys, we don't
want to beat you too badly for your first visit."

Laughing my ass off, I said, "Like that's going to happen dad, Alex and I
don't plan on showing you and Thomas any mercy so bit your tongue. By the
way what time will Thomas be over?"

Dad chuckled, "Knowing Thomas he's probably already there with the grill
going. Alex I hope you enjoy hamburgers, salad, and beer, that's pretty
much the menu for dinner."

"Are you kidding, I love hamburgers, but I've never had a beer, but I'd
like one, just don't tell my dad, he'll kill me if he finds out."

Giving Alex a big smile dad said, "That' not going to happen, no killing
allowed; it's all fun and enjoyment so relax and go with the flow."

We pulled into the drive and saw Thomas's Escalade in the circular drive. I
guess dad was right, Thomas beat us here and more than likely had the grill
going. I was glad because I had worked up a major appetite.

Everyone ate like they were starving including Alex. He kept looking
around at all of us with a kind of, is this real, look on his face. He
took a drink of his beer and let out an involuntary burp, he actually
looked horrified as he looked at dad as if he was expecting to get punished.

We all laughed as Thomas slapped him on the back, "I take it you're not
much of a drinker."

"Uncle Thomas, it's his first beer, take it easy on him."

"He knows I'm teasing him Lance, and I love it when you call me Uncle
Thomas, it really makes me feel like part of the family."

"You are part of the family so you need to get over yourself already."

"Brett, what's gotten in to Lance, he's getting be a real smarty pants."

"Oh Uncle Thomas, you know I love you, if I can't kid with the guys I love
who can I kid with?"

I think stuck my tongue out at him before getting up and running with
Thomas chasing on my heels. We made it around the pool about three times
before Thomas caught me and we both fell in as we struggled with each other.
Dad and Alex were laughing so hard that dad was holding his side.

Thankfully Thomas and I were only wearing shorts and t-shirts, we stripped
the wet clothes off and dad handed us towels. It wasn't until we looked up
that we realized Alex was shaking so hard it looked like he might pass out.

Dad pulled him into a hug trying to calm him as he asked what was wrong. Alex
was sobbing uncontrollably; Thomas and I came over and put our arms around
him. I said, "Alex what's wrong, you're safe here, we're all your friends,
we're sorry if we upset you."

"I'm scared Lance, and confused, there's so much love and happiness here,
you guys are so open and loving, this is what life should be and I'll never
have it like this. My dad hates me; if he knew I saw you and Thomas naked
he'd probably beat me to death."

Dad had Alex sit next to him on one of the lounges. "Alex, there's no
reason to be upset, nudity is natural, it's nothing to be ashamed of, it's
simply who we are without clothes. Alex there's nothing to be afraid of
here, you may not know it yet, but we're all your friends, and friends look
after their each other."

Alex wiped tears away from his eyes, "You don't understand, I'm so ashamed
of what I am. Dad came home one day and found me and a friend having sex,
it was another guy and when he walked in on us we were in a sixty-nine
position. He threw Ryan out of the house naked before throwing his clothes
at him. My dad nearly killed me, I wish he had, I was in the hospital for
weeks. He told the doctors that I had been in a car accident."

By this time I was crying, Thomas put his arms around me and held me tight.
Dad kissed Alex on the top of his head before tilting his face up so dad
could look into his eyes. "Alex, you did nothing wrong, you and your
friend Ryan were simply following your natural instincts. You are who you
are, and we're all different. Everyone wasn't designed or even meant to be
the same, some men are attracted to other men, and that's the way life is."

"You have to understand, if all men married and had children, the earth
would have been over populated centuries ago, that would have destroyed
this wonderful planet we live on. There is a reason for all things Alex,
and there's a very good reason for all of us being different."

"Dad says I'm evil and sick, that I should be castrated or put to death."

"Alex, it's you dad who's confused, he has had a life time of listening to
those in society who are reticent about accepting anyone who is different
then they are. People become first frightened, then hate-filled before
becoming violent against others who are not the same in appearance or don't
believe the same as they do. Unfortunately it's a common occurrence and
it's a hard mindset to change. It takes a paradigm shift in thinking and
that can take a long time."

Dad leaned in and kissed Alex on the lips, "There is nothing wrong with you
Alex; you will need to learn to befriend those you recognize as kindred
spirits, and be patient with those who are not. Now your dad can not and
will not be allowed to harm you in anyway. Please don't say anything to
him about what has happened here this evening. I will talk to you dad
Monday and see if I can't make him see how foolish he's behaving. Trust me
Alex, things will change, and change for the better."

Alex put his arms around dad and held on to him for the longest time.

I suggested we skip the card game and go for the pool, half of us are naked
already. Dad, Thomas cracked up with laughter, Alex even started to laugh.
Dad looked at Alex and asked if he was up for a swim, if he didn't want to
swim naked we would all understand.

Alex hesitated momentarily before saying, "I guess we're all kindred
spirits here, right?"

I put my arm around Alex's shoulder and said, "I think you've figured us
out by George."

"In that case I'm all for it," he stripped his clothes off and dove into
the pool. The rest of the evening was nothing but fun, there was some
minor sexual play but nothing too serious, it's needless to say Alex was
having the time of his life. I think he managed to at least tug on
everyone's cock before it was time to get out and clean up the patio.

Just before getting out of the water I wrapped my legs around Alex's waist
and pulled him to me for a kiss. He said, "Lance you have given me the
happiest day of my life, I can't thank you enough."

Dad called Alex's dad and told him Alex had a nice time and it was a real
pleasure having such a well behaved young man over. Thomas will be
dropping Alex off on his way home. Oh, and I'd like to see you in my
office first thing Monday morning, we have some things we need to discuss.

I hung up the phone thinking; let him mull that over until Monday. He
won't have any idea what I want to discuss with him. Before Alex left with
Thomas I took him aside and explained that I didn't want him to tell his
dad we had been swimming, just tell him we had a BBQ and played cards, and
gave Alex a knowing wink. I believe Alex picked up on the reason why, he's
a smart kid.

Monday morning early Mr. Miller was in my outer office. Maria let me know
he was there and I told her to send him in about fifteen minutes. I wanted
his nerves to be as on edge as possible. When he came in I stood and shook
his hand warmly.

"You look pale Jim; let's have something to drink, would you prefer coffee
or tea?"

"I prefer Coffee."

"Do you beat the crap out of people who prefer tea?"

"What? What do you mean do I beat the crap out of people who prefer
tea? That's
the silliest thing I've ever heard."

"I was just curious, there are people out there who what nothing to do with
someone who isn't exactly like they are, you know, wrong color, wrong
church, wrong faith, wrong thinking."

"Yes, I understand there are people who are not accepting of others who are
different, they need an attitude correction."

"I agree with you completely, now please explain to me why you've been
beating the crap out of your son on a regular basis."

"I see you've been talking to coach Randal, he's always sticking his nose
into something that's none of his business. Alex is a bit clumsy and
occasionally bruises himself, that's all there is to it."

"Alex spent seven weeks in the hospital with a concussion, broken ribs, and
a fractured arm, and I happen to know for a fact that was not because of a
car accident. The police didn't think it was a car accident, and the
doctors who treated Alex know it wasn't a car accident and report it to the
police as battery."

"You can go fuck yourself, I'm out of here."

"You walk out that door and you can pick up your severance pay on your way
past Maria."

"You can't fire me, who do you think you are?"

I punched the intercom and asked Maria to bring in Mr. Miller's severance
package. Maria immediately came in a laid the folder on my desk. I open
the folder up and handed Jim a pen.

"I'll need you to sign a few papers and before security walks you to your
car."

"Wait please, I need this job, can't we talk this out?"

"Well Jim that's why I asked you here this morning, but now I need some
straight forward answers from you. And to clear up a misconception, I
haven't talked with coach Randal about Alex. I want you to tell me why
you've been harming your own child. You know the one you're supposed to be
protecting with your life."

Jim looked down at the floor as he spoke.

"I came home early one day and caught Alex in bed with another boy having
sex."

"Yes, well now tell me why you beat him nearly to death."

"I just told you."

"No, you said, you found Alex in bed having sex with another boy. Don't
you like sex?

"Yes, of course I like sex, but it's not natural for a man to be with
another man."

"Jim, it's the most natural thing in the world for a man to be attracted to
another man if that is how he's made. No one chooses to be different in a
way that would cause them discomfort in their life. For a young man to
accept who he is can be hard enough without a father making him feel like
he's less than human."

"Alex needs your acceptance, love, and support now more than he ever will
in his life. How would you feel if Alex took his own life? He said he
wished he had died in the hospital he's so ashamed of what he is. And what
he is, is a handsome, intelligent, kind young man who needs his fathers
love and understanding."

The most unexpected reaction came from Jim. He put his face in his hands
and wept so sorrowful that I actually felt sorry for him. I went around my
desk and put my arm around his shoulders.

"Jim, it's not too late to be there for your son."

"It's not that Brett, I'm the one who's ashamed, and it's not Alex that I
hate. I hate myself for having the same feelings for men that Alex has, I
always have. When I saw him and Ryan doing what I never had the courage to
do, I went insane with rage, I directed it at Alex, but it's me that I hate
for not having the courage Alex has to act on his true feelings. How could
he ever forgive me, I've been a monster to him, I don't deserve his love."

"You're not giving you son enough credit Jim, there's nothing Alex wants
more than to know you love him."

Wow! I sure didn't see that one coming.
