			   My Step-Brother Jacob

				Chapter 22

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I sat in the driveway behind the wheel of the Jag, staring at my old Anglia
which was sitting in the garage in front of me. I didn't remember the
drive home. I was too stunned by the encounter I'd just had with Andy's
father and brother out at their house. What the hell had happened? Why
wasn't Andy living there anymore? Where was he? Had he 'come out' to his
family? It had certainly sounded like they knew he was gay, and that he
had either told them, or they'd somehow deduced that we were a couple.
Shit. What was I going to do? How was I going to find Andy? I sat for a
while, with all these thoughts flying through my brain. Finally, I got out
of the car, locked it, and went into the house.

I let Jack out to pee. I got a bottle of Watney's Ale out of the
refrigerator and opened it, while I waited for him. Jack didn't take too
long, as it was getting colder out. I locked up and grabbed a bag of
pretzels and my beer and followed Jack upstairs to my room. Jack curled up
in his bed in the corner, and I flipped the TV on and laid back on my bed,
not watching it. As I devoured the pretzels and sucked down my ale, I kept
replaying in my mind, all that had happened recently, from Andy discovering
me fucking Laney on the living room floor, right up until his father
slammed the door in my face an hour earlier. Everything was so fucked up,
and again, it was all my fault. I felt tears forming in my eyes, but I was
ashamed that I could feel sorry for myself, when poor Andy was God knows
where, and might need help. I roughly rubbed away my tears. I had to come
up with a plan to find Andy. As I sat thinking, and half listening to the
BBC, I was jolted as the announcer said that we were entering a cold snap
and that Government officials were worried about the record number of
homeless people who would be spending the night outside. Fuck, what if
Andy was one of those people. My eyes watered again, but this time for
Andy.

I must've fallen asleep, as the next thing I knew, Jacob was shaking me
awake. "You're gonna spill your beer," he said. Groggily I looked up at
him, blinking. "Wake up, you're gonna spill your beer all over yourself,"
he said, trying to take the almost empty bottle from my hand. I let him
have it and he set it on the nightstand. "I'm going to bed now," he said,
and turned and walked out of the room. "K, Night" I called. All I got for
a reply was a grunt. Still, a grunt was reply. The TV was off. I
wondered if he'd turned it off, or if Elizabeth had come in and turned it
off. I glanced at the clock. It was 10:30. I heard Jacob getting ready
for bed, then all was quiet. I didn't have the energy to get up again to
get ready for bed, so I just pulled my duvet up over me, and eventually
dozed off.

I didn't feel rested in the morning. All night I'd kept waking up after
having the same dream. I kept seeing Andy sitting in the snow, shivering.
I shuddered. I had to find him!

Jacob was already getting out of the shower, when I entered the bathroom.
He looked at me and said "Are you alright?" "Uh - yeah, I guess," I
grunted back at him. He left me alone in the bathroom then. I looked at
myself in the mirror. I looked awful. Pale, sunken eyes, badly in need of
a shave. I fixed the latter, by shaving right away. Then I brushed my
teeth, took a shit, and hopped in the shower. There was a telltale gob of
cum on the back wall of the shower. Obviously Jacob had been 'busy'. I
washed, then lathered up my dick well, and after several quick strokes,
added my own cum to Jacob's. Using the hand-held shower, I rinsed myself
off, then washed off the wall.

After I dressed, I went downstairs to the kitchen. Jacob was eating
Wheatabix again. Shit! I'd forgotten all about cooking breakfast. "I'm
sorry," I said, "I meant to make eggs this morning." "Don't worry about
it," Elizabeth said. Jacob merely looked at me with a 'yeah right' look on
his face and grunted. "Really!" I said, looking at him, "do you still want
some?" He shook his head, as he continued eating his cereal. Elizabeth
told us then that she was leaving at lunch time and was going to spend the
weekend at her friend's house. She'd be back Sunday evening, she said.
Jacob looked at me for a minute. I couldn't read his look. "We'll be
fine," I said, glancing at Jacob. He just continued looking at me for a
minute, then went back to eating. A few minutes later, Jacob asked his
mother if it would be OK for Harry to spend the night. Elizabeth said,
"sure - as long as it's OK with John." Jacob looked at me. I said, "sure,
whatever." Jacob finished eating then, put his bowl in the sink, kissed
his mother good-bye and headed for the door, as he shouldered his back pack
of books. I picked up a banana and my bag and kissed Elizabeth good-bye
and followed Jacob out into the frigid cold air.

"Is Harry spending the whole weekend?" I asked as we rode toward his house.
"Just Saturday and Sunday I think," Jacob replied. "Good!" I said,
"That'll give us this evening to talk once." A mixture of emotions crossed
Jacob's face as I glanced at him in the rearview. He didn't reply though,
as we were pulling up to Harry's. Laney waved to us as she climbed into
her own car, while Harry was clambored into my back seat.

Both boys looked surprised when I drove directly to the school, without
going to Andy's. Jacob started to say something about it, but stopped. We
rode the rest of the way in silence. "I'll see you later," I said as we
got out of the car and they started off toward the building. "K" Jacob
said. Harry didn't answer, but glanced back at me for a moment, before
continuing on.

I went into the school and looked around the lobby in the vain hope that
Andy would be there. He wasn't. I asked a few people who knew him if
they'd seen him. They hadn't. Then the bell rang and I went to class. At
lunch again, I asked around about Andy. Nobody had seen him. As I sat
eating with Laney and some of her girlfriends, I noticed that Devon
Lankford, the asshole I'd had a fight with because of his comments about
Andy, and his friend Evan Rothbard were watching me. I glared back at
Devon at one point, and he got up and walked out of the cafeteria. Evan
stayed though and kept watching me. Laney's friends all got up to go then.
Laney stayed though, as I hadn't made a move to leave. I was finishing an
apple I was eating, and Laney and I were talking, when Evan got up and came
toward us. I looked up at him quizzically, as he stopped behind Laney, and
was looking at me. Nervously he said, "You're friends with that blonde guy
everyone says is gay aren't you?" "His name's Andy, and yes I am," I said
sharply, "do you know anything about where he is?" "Yeah, I'm pretty sure
I saw him last night," Evan said. "WHERE?" I yelled, "Is he OK?" Laney
and Evan both jumped a little, startled by my outburst. "I can take you to
where I saw him, if you want, but I don't know if he'll still be there.
And I don't know if he's OK or not," Evan said. "Laney, can you bring Jake
home from school?" I asked, leaping up. "Yeah, sure," she said, "no
problem." "Come on!" I said to Evan. "Now?" he asked. "YEAH!" I said.
"Well, OK, I never really liked maths anyway," he said, flashing me a small
smile.

Evan followed me to my locker, and I grabbed my jacket. Then I followed
him to his. He dumped his stuff and grabbed his jacket too, and a bag that
looked like a lunch. "We can take my car," I said. "OK," he replied. "So
where is he?" I asked axiously, as we walked out to the parking lot. It
was starting to snow lightly. "You drive, and I'll direct," was all he
said. I looked at him, but he just looked ahead. "Wow! This is your's?"
he asked when we got to my Jag. "Well, it was my father's, but..." I
trailed off. "Oh, yeah - I heard," he said, "I'm sorry about your father."
"Thanks," I said. We got into the car and Evan told me to turn right, out
of the lot.

As we drove along, I noticed Evan seemed to be squirming a little. After a
couple minutes he said, "um, I was wondering...Is Andy really gay?" I just
looked at him, through angry eyes. Quickly, before I could say anything,
he said "I'm sorry. It's none of my business. It's just that..." "What?"
I demanded. He looked at me with a slightly frightened look in his eyes.
After a minute he said, "Well, last weekend me and Devon picked him up,
when we were driving down the road to Dev's house." "Tell me what
happened," I said, my gut beginning to twist. Haltingly, Evan told me
about how they'd stopped along the road when they saw him sitting in the
snow, bleeding. "Bleeding?" I said, alarmed. "He had a cut on his knee,"
Evan said, his eyes still looking fearfully at me. He paused a minute, but
then he told me about how Devon had told Andy they'd give him a ride in
exchange for blow jobs. I was furious, and was about to pull off the road
so I could pound Evan. "Don't worry, nothing happened," Evan quickly
continued, "I didn't want a guy sucking my dick, although, I was surprised
that Devon seemed a little peeved when I said that to Andy. Maybe, if I
wasn't there, he'd have tried to get Andy to give him one. Anyway, nothing
happened. We just drove Andy to his house and left him there." As my
anger ebbed away, I continued driving. "Turn left up here and head toward
the river," Evan said. "Where the hell is he?" I asked. "He's with a
bunch of homeless types down by the river, living under a bridge," Evan
said looking at me, as I felt tears welling in my eyes.

We rode silently the rest of the way, except for Evan's directions.
Eventually, we pulled into a parking lot. On the other side of a field
next to it, I saw a highway coming from our right and going up onto a
bridge that would take it across the Thames. Near the base of the bridge's
abuttments, I saw a group of people huddled around a fire in a barrel. "He
was with them," Evan said. I looked, but couldn't see him from that
distance. "Do you mind if I wait in your car?" Evan asked. "Why?" I
asked. "I got my reasons," he said. Then he held the lunch bag out to me
and said, "There's a guy down there with a dark red woolen hat on. He has
a bad limp, and a gold tooth, and long hair that's starting to go gray.
He'll be wearing a brown coat. Could you give him this please?" I looked
at him questioningly. "Please?" he asked, almost pleadingly. "I'll try,"
I said looking at him, "how is it you know him? And how'd you see Andy
here?" Evan looked embarassed. After a pause, during which he looked at
me, as if appraising how I'd react. Finally he said "Well, I kind of got
arrested for shoplifting before Christmas. I wouldn't have done it - but I
didn't have a present for my Mum. I got caught. As part of my punishment,
I have to do community service. Last night I worked a mobile soup kitchen.
We came down here. That's how I saw Andy. I'd have called you then, but
didn't know how to find you." He stopped and looked at me, blinking.
Finally I said, "I see. Thanks for being honest with me. And thanks for
helping me find Andy. Stay here, I'll be right back." He flashed a small
smile at me, as I closed the door and set off across the field.

As I neared the opposite side of the field, I immediately saw the man Evan
wanted me to give the bag to. I made my way toward him, all the while
scanning the area for Andy. Everyone looked at me somewhat suspiciously as
I approached. I walked over to the man Evan wanted me to leave the bag
with. He looked up at me suspiciously as well. I thought he looked rather
familiar. "I have something for you," I said, and handed him the bag. He
opened it and pulled out a sandwich. Smiling, he looked up at me, his gold
tooth glinting. "Who are you? And why are you giving me this?" he asked.
I told him a friend of mine named Evan asked me to give it to him. "Evan?
I used to have a son named Evan." he said sadly. Then I realized why he
looked familiar. He looked like an older, tragically, worn-out Evan.
Suddenly, I felt really bad for Evan. My God - no wonder he was screwed
up. I reached in my pocket and found some pocket change and gave that to
the man too. He grinned and thanked me over and over. I looked around for
Andy, but didn't see him anywhere, and started to panic a little. I asked
the man if he'd seen a blonde 17 year old boy in the area. "Try that box
over there, he said, pointing to a box that had once held an electric
range, that was sitting on its side under one of the bridge abuttments. I
thanked him, and as he started to eat, I turned and ran to the box.

As I approached the box, I slowed down and walked around to the open side
of it. "Oh My Fucking God!" I exclaimed, as my hand flew to my mouth.
There inside the box lay Andy, all curled into a shivering ball. He looked
awful. His one arm looked grotesquely twisted. He was nearly gray with
cold. His beautiful shiny blonde hair that showed from under his woolen
hat, looked dull and dingy. There was some matted blood in one shock of
it. He had cuts and bruises all over his face. His body was shuddering he
was so cold. His jeans were ripped. His eyes which had been closed, flew
open when he heard me utter my oath. He just stared at me blankly. My
eyes filled with tears as I sank to my knees in front of him. "Oh Andy!
I'm so sorry!" I said, as tears began running down my cheeks. I could see
Andy's eyes were filling with tears as well. He didn't speak though. I
leaned forward toward him, but he pulled backward, into his box. "Please
Andy! I'm sorry for everything! I love you! And I'm taking you home with
me!" I said. He started to cry then. I laid down on the ground and
twisted till I was partially inside the box with him. I gently took him in
my arms, but he yelped in pain as I touched his arm. "Is your arm broken?"
I asked. He may have nodded, I couldn't tell he was shaking so from the
cold. "Can you walk?" I asked. This time I saw him shake his head 'no'.
"Br-Broken ank-ankle" he rasped hoarsely. He sounded sick. I felt his
forehead. "Son of a Bitch!" I muttered, he was burning up, even in the
frigid cold. "Which ankle is broken Andy?" I asked, wiping the remaining
tears from my face, then wiping his away too. "l-left," he answered. "OK,
I'm gonna carry you then," I said. He looked fearful, but let me pull him
gently, in order to get him out of the box. I stood up and looked around
and didn't see anything that belonged to him, so I knelt and ever so
gently, scooped Andy up from the ground. He winced a bit. Slowly I stood
up with him. I was extremely careful of his left extremities as both
seemed broken. He winced in pain a couple times again, but didn't say
anything. As I tightened my grip on him, so I wouldn't drop him, I
whispered to Andy, my face close to his, "I love you Andy, and I'm going to
take care of you and fix everything. And I'll always be there for you! I
promise" Andy was shuddering harder now, and I realized he'd begun sobbing.
I bent my neck and kissed his cheek, as he snuggled his face closer to me.
Then, as tears began to roll down my cheeks, I started trudging slowly
through the snow across the field, carrying my beautiful, sweet, broken
Andy...
